Not so much programming as it is general IT related, but a good story none the less.

I smell bullshit.

If the KVM was switched to another computer...HOW THE FUCK COULD HE SEE THE ERROR MESSAGE?

Well, THAT makes sense.

Because monitors are so much cheaper and less space-consuming than keyboards.

I'm... pretty sure this story is meant to be hyperbole.

Quote
"NO," the senior tech emphatically interrupted. "I just said that we're not authorized for this! You think that it's safe to just make The Process up as you go? Without The Process, we have nothing. The Process Be Praised!"

(Not to say that people don't act exactly like this, but The Process is usually an acronym of some sort and they usually leave off the "Process Be Praised" bit.)

(Actually if you just changed "The Process Be Praised!" to some varation of "Freakin' goddam Process" you've got it exactly.)

Hasn't this one been passing around the internet since time began and back again?

Brent: Well yeah, the dialogue's obviously fake.  I was just saying the whole thing is.

It brought The Web Site Is Down to mind.  Not strictly related or anything, but...

I mean I would have assumed it was without the glaring logic error, but that is a good catch.

I've got this idea in my brain that it could totally happen, though, and I'm wracking my brain to figure out how.  Which is made somewhat difficult by the fact that I've never used a KVM outside of college.

I should get back to work now.

Also the dialogue in that is fucking scary.  Is that scripted or just an actual conversation on chipmunk speed?

(I am currently putting off having these conversations in lieu of listening to them.)

Well, at my old work we had more racks than we had switches, so there were a couple where you'd have to move keyboard, monitor, and mouse independently.

And there WERE a couple servers whose BIOS was configured not to let them boot without a keyboard connected.  Which is stupid.  But they were like that before I got there and since they were production servers I didn't notice until one actually lost power.

DailyWTF had a good one that I saw in some software while I was working for the defense contractor.

Are you sure you want to cancel? [OK] [CANCEL]

Oooooh.  I was wondering what the fuck was up with that today.

I was looking up Javascript stuff so I just assumed they had gotten completely paranoid.

Yeah, I'm sure I've read this at least twice before elsewhere.

In fairness, I HAVE worked in an environment that was fucked enough that something like this could happen.

Doesn't make it true, but it does make it plausible.

Oh hey, let's rez this old thing instead of just tacking things on to Pet Peeves.

Hey guy!

Yeah, I understand that the trackpads on Thinkpads are easy to touch with your palm by accident, and that this can be really irritating.

But did you really fucking have to Scotch-tape a business card over it and leave a bunch of sticky residue for me to have to clean off instead of, say, just opening up the Control Panel and seeing if there was a way to disable it?

Because there totally is!

In fairness, a dab of three things that I can think of on a slightly damp cloth will remove that tape residue in a matter of seconds. All of which should be under any cleaning counter. Hell, I have both goo-gone and rubbing-alcohol within 10 feet of me right now.
