Wonder Woman's new costume.

It's cool that they're finally giving her pants, but that tiny jacket is pure 90s.

I could have sworn she's worn something similar before. Except without red underneath and her hair tied back.

It's similar to the Wonder Girl outfit, with a few bits from Superboy's closet thrown in for good measure.

Honestly I'm only interested in this to see how Wonderella parodies it.

I don't care what the other superheroes are doing. I will not be wearing a jean jacket. That is all.

You know, a lot of people and friends I know have been discussing the Wonder Woman costume change, some even getting quite livid about it, even though JMS and DC have been reinforcing how temporary the costume change is.

But then it hit me.

This is a story about a legacy character who's undergone a change in character who then must fight so that she can go back to being the establishment, nostalgia influenced character she always was.  It's a story that's a metaphor for DC as a whole.

See, I just can't help but giggle at how stupid the costume is.

I'm almost 100% certain I can tell you EXACTLY how that costume was created. They quite literally said "Okay we're going to put some pants on her - that's our big change!". So they did - directly over the old costume. Then they realized that no matter how they tweaked it (pant colour, belt line, ornamentation), it looked utterly retarded. That's where the coat came in. It changes the top, while preserving the torso piece that provides the only continuity between the old and new outfits (of course, the torso piece was almost the entire old costume anyway...).

Now it's still retarded, but it's a 'balanced retarded', so I guess this is somehow okay.

I think it looks like she escaped from an episode of 21 Jump Street.

But only because of the jacket.  If the jacket were replaced with that cloak she wears when she has to be a tough, amazonian princess it'd look fantastic.

I don't get what's wrong with the jacket either! It's a blue jacket! It's a good blue jacket!

You know in MY day folks wore whatever the dicks they wanted without fear of being directly compared to the most comically terrible superhero this side of space-jesus cable! We complimented a lady on her edgy but sensible faux-noir fightjacket!

I agree with Mamestra brassicae. It's a nice design that I'm still bewildered people actually care about.

I like the design. Not to fond of the whole "TIME TRAVEL LOLS" rewrite but I am glad the whole thing is more of a "Time travel? What the shit? Well let's undo that!" The fact that they introduced it and made it more of a "this is temporary, so deal with it for now." really makes me more interested. If they had done the normal thing and just "Here's a change." Then changed it back a year or whatever later, it'd seem more like the story was adapting to the sales. This way it seems more like "We really want to tell this story so deal with it for now. If you like it, great. If not, well, sorry in advance. We are doing it anyway."

It's that kind of attitude (were they want to tell a story, even if it's not favorably received) that I want to see in a comic. And the fact they came out and said it'd be temporary means you really shouldn't rage about it. I think it was a smart move.

Because DC is pushing this as a big new change, and even though everyone knows it won't last a year or two, if even that, it'll probably influence whatever costume comes next.

Besides, the news covered Electric Superman back in the day, and this is probably going to stick longer than that.

Edit: Kris Straub has an interesting bit on this.

This is exactly why it bewilders me.
Marvel and DC comics are like soap operas. They use the same tired tricks over and over again in a desperate struggle for attention. And after going through the motions for so long, I have no idea why anyone would bother to keep giving them that attention, much less CNN.
If we ignore it, it'll go away.

DC is so fossilized Wonder Woman needs a retcon just to change clothes.
