Title: I Am Obsessed With Appearances: The Fashion Thread
Post by: teg on July 29, 2010, 09:00:32 PM
i like fashion you guise lets have a thread lets have a thread

So I feel like completely reinventing my look, as I sometimes do.

I'm looking into sort of a "business-punk" aesthetic. Like really nice dress shirts and stuff coupled with casual accessories. I'll draw something up later. Anyway, I found a great lightweight dress shirt for it today, but it's $27.

grr argh

Buying too fucking much clothing is what got me into the most financial trouble last time I moved out, so I've gotten a lot more aware of just how to buy clothes I like without going bankrupt. This is setting off alarms, but on the other hand... it's a really nice shirt.

Dress shirts for $27?  That's actually pretty cheap, most of the decent stuff starts at $50 (Therefore if it is a nice shirt at $27 buy it I am a bad financial planner).  I wear a lot of shirts+slacks for work, and I adore suits.  When I'm dressing casual I'm kind of a fan of noveau-hippie, stuff like this (http://www.globalrebels.com/jimihendrix/ARE-YOU-EXPERIENCED-IN-BLACK/productinfo/XHEW15210B/).

You could always just design your own shirt. (http://www.blank-label.com/)

That's too expensive.

I like designing clothes, but I'd sooner do it by hand. I'm looking into screenprinting right now. I might take up sewing.

...chances are at some point I'm going to get bored of that shirt and make something completely different out of it. :whoops:

Making stuff is fun and rewarding. If the end result is something practical that I can use every day, that only sweetens the deal.

I've been sitting on some designs for forever now that I'm just itching to screenprint.

Between Ross ($3 DKNY ties! $0.50 pocket squares!) and thrifting, this entire outfit cost me about $60, including the $40 I spent on the jacket (H&M sale). The pocket handkerchief might be a bit much, but I think it looks good.

My main vice clothing wise is shoes. I have like a dozen pairs of sneakers to match any outfit I can make. Not to say I wouldn't blow a ton of money on all sorts of clothes if I could, but that's the main sink.

On that note, because I think I'm a thirteen-year-old girl I mainly shop at Pac Sun and Zumies. The latter having a discount sneaker section and the former discount hoodies / button-ups.

I buy all my shoes at Zumiez.

Skate shoes are always so comfortable - I can't really wear tennis/running shoes anymore due to how narrow they are

I don't buy nearly enough shoes. I usually just have one pair that I wear until they're utterly destroyed.

It makes me super sad that I can't find any womens' shows in my size.
Even crossdressing specialty stores online are basically all kinky boots. I just want normal shoes in a slightly larger size.

I got a new hat today! I've been pulling off red and black checkered accessories lately. This helps.

Let me introduce you to Payless. (http://www.payless.com/store/) I think you will find it becomes your new best friend in regards to shoe-shopping. They have sizes up to Ladies 12. I'm a Ladies 11, but I can squeeze into a 10 sometimes.

Also, shopping for shoes online can be a bit of a crapshoot. You may end up with a pair that looks nice but pinches your toes or scrapes your ankle or something. Going to buy shoes in-store, regardless of how mortifying it can be, is really the best option.

I have so many shoes from Payless, it's scary.

If you are looking for kinky stripper shoes or just a nice pair of heels, may I suggest Snaz75 (http://www.snaz75.com/)?

Christ, Buge, you have tiny feet. No wonder you're one of them lady-boys.

I wear a ten and a half wide men's and I have some of the smallest feet of any dude I know. I like shoes well enough, but I've never been able to rationalize buying any, because to date the only pair of shoes that has been comfortable for me to wear is a pair of velcro-up shoes and to be perfectly honest even those kind of suck. I have wide arches and a somewhat narrow heel, but the ball of my foot is about the normal size. So I can't fit into 10s at all, 11s slip off my heel, but 10 and a half is too snug and is actually painful to wear for the first three days to three weeks I have the shoes, depending on how resilient they are. Needless to say, I buy cheap shoes. Anything more durable than a 20 dollar special from payless is going to be extremely painful to wear.

My main vice clothing wise is shoes. I have like a dozen pairs of sneakers to match any outfit I can make. Not to say I wouldn't blow a ton of money on all sorts of clothes if I could, but that's the main sink.

I used to know a guy at my first job in OK who was a shoe collector. He collected Air Jordan shoes and to a lesser extent a few of the other premium basketball shoes. He had something like 50 pairs of Jordans at his dorm (he was in Oklahoma to go to OSU) and then back at home heh ad like a hundred more pairs. He literally had a different 150 dollar pair of shoes for every outfit he wore. He was extremely serious about them, too. He'd bring leather polish in to work in case he scuffed them, and he could spot a counterfeit pair just by line of sight. He could tell if the material was wrong, the stitching was wrong, the laces, etc. Dude was fucking serious about shoes.

I'd honestly like to try on a pair of Jordans some day, because the fuckers look comfortable, but I am way too white for those shoes.

I've gotta say, I wear nice clothing(All my clothes are generally expensive, usually the dress shirts and slacks are custom fitted) but my style is generally... I dunno, James says I look like a bruise because I generally wear black, blue OR black AND blue... I don't actually own THAT much clothing compared to some people. I have 2 blue and 3 black t-shirts. 3 Black dress shirts, 3 blue dress shirts and 2 blue/black striped dress shirts. 7 pairs of dress slacks, 2 blue, 1 tan, 4 black. For shoes I have one pair of classic black and white Chuck Taylors and 2 pairs of black leather dress shoes, polished to shin

In all seriousness the black and blue goes deep in my clothes I have 10 pairs of blue boxers and 8 pairs of black dress socks too... Man, that's like, ALL THE CLOTHES I OWN.

Well, they're not so small I can shop at any upscale fashion boutiques. Those usually max out at size 10. It's done wonders for my budget though! I can get a nice pair of $30 shoes at Payless and not be tempted to shop at Aldo or Fluevog.

The largest shoes I've seen were a mens size 12. That was my old roommate Chip. He had clown feet.

My ex's dad, on the other hand, had teensy elf feet. Size 6, I think.

I'm a mens' 11. :painful:

Well, you may be able to squeeze into a size 12, but otherwise, :nyoro~n:

Well, I'm a men's 8 and a half or 9, depending on the shoe, so... *sashays*

Of course I buy one type of shoe only: dark, non-patterned, steeltoed workboots. It's the form of footwear that comes closest to being universally useful.

Dang, you guys make me wonder if we're even on the same numbers scale. I wear size 13.

My shoe-buying method is to go to every shoe store in town, look at the single pair of size 13 shoes they have at each place (if they even have one), and then pick the least horrible one overall. ::(:

I've been gradually growing to hate my body. Not because I'm fat, though I am fat, but because it's too god damn big and weird for me to ever find nice clothes that fit well on my budget. Shirts designed to fit people with my chest size are designed presuming the wearer is morbidly obese, so nothing ever fits well off the rack. I've also got like a super long torso and T-Rex arms/short legs so arm length and inseam are just always way too long. I I have to wear 2x-Tall or 17-1/2" dress shirts, but any dress shirt or coat that will fit over my shoulders/chest is just sagging two feet off my body around the belly and hanging like three inches long at both arms. Thankfully American Apparel has starting cutting t-shirts longer and tighter around the belly so I can actually have some clothes I like that don't need to have the shit altered out of them coming off the rack.

I also have giant misshapen feet. I wear size 14 EEEEEE - 17 regular shoes, so finding shoes on my budget that look good is stupid hard and I hate it. Some guy with similar sized feet did put up a bunch of his shoes in a consignment store near me recently, and I got the best pair of sneakers, dress shoes, and loafers I own for like 40 bucks. It was the best day for my wardrobe ever.

Once I finish my bachelors in nursing I should have the money to buy a wardrobe of tailor made clothes and shoes, and I am so so so looking forward to that.

Also. Teg, tell me more about this "business punk" aesthetic.

I have basically the same problem in reverse. I need European cut suits and shirts with extended sleeves, and I've yet to find a single pair of pants my size (27 waist 36 length).

The worst part being when you go into stores with that problem the workers and anyone overhearing gives you a dirty look.

Actually, Ryg reminded me, because I didn't think of it last night. I also own 3 suits, one blue with black shirt and blue/black striped tie. One Black with white shirt and black tie, and one black with black shirt and black tie, oh, and a tuxedo for some reason I can't fathom.

Okay, I may have finally crossed the line from dandy to fop. I absolutely love the look of a boutonniere, but they just look too formal to wear day to day with a basic suit (or jacket and jeans). In order to get the style benefits of a boutonniere without looking like a prom date, I took a trip to the craft store and made cute, cartoony flowers out of felt. I then sewed them together with a button at the back so they button right into the lapel (easy!), never wilt, and don't draw nearly as much attention as the real deal. Much recommended for daily jacket-wearers.

Clutch, you see the thing is that I generally like suits for my evening forays and that article says that black suits are perfect for the evening and compliment club and whatnot lighting well. it also says that black suits look better on people with light skin and dark hair, which I have due to my ancestry.... So, I was doing it right?

Generally during the day I wear some form of dress pants, dress shoes, and a t shirt or dress shirt. All in matching colors, usually navy blue or black. Sometimes dark green.

I have no problem with this. Black is perfectly fine in the dim, though for someone like me (pale) a midnight blue suit--it's right there in the name!--would be a better choice for eveningwear. My objection to black suits is for men who own one suit and it is black.

This seems like the best place to ask this question, even if it's not about clothes per se.

I traditionally sport an Abe Lincoln chinbeard, but my hairstylist has advised me that it's time to move on to something different. However, I like having facial hair, but I've found I still dislike the sensation of a mustache, so I'm trying to figure out what else to do.

I'm considering muttonchops.

Is this a good idea or a bad idea?

I'd take the more nuanced position of "depends on the cowboy boot."  If they lay it on thick it can be tricky, but if they've got squared or rounded toes, maybe not too much patterning, I can see it working.  I've got a pair I wear with jeans over the top.  Sort of just look like boots.

The thing about boots is if you wear the proper pants they cover the boot top. A lot of two tone boots are made 2 tone because the top of them isn't meant to be seen. Best I've seen boots is wearing them under nice dress pants or boot-cut jeans. Hence the name boot-cut. Boots actually look nice if they are not huge garish and you're wearing them mostly covered with a nice suit or dress outfit. Also, don't wear 'western shirts'.

See, this is why accessorizing is important. If you're going to wear a long coat, you need something to offset the aura of creepy/hipster you will inevitably exude. I suggest a hat.

You can get away with it if you have a coat like mine. I actually have a true mid 70's full-length brown leather trenchcoat. My problem is that it's so worn around the shoulders and armpits I don't dare wear it anymore. I need to spend a fair bit of cash on professional leather rescue. :(((

I have a bizarre fondness for 70's brown leather coats... my preferred "light" jacket is a suit-cut one with the quadruple pockets you'd find on a Nehru jacket. The silk lining on both coats is a ruin, but that hasn't been too much of a problem.

What I'd really like to find is one very similar to my light coat, but an inch or two longer and fleece-lined (maybe with the fleece collar), for colder weather (but not deep-freeze - I'm not THAT devoted to old coats).

What you need is something with wide lapels that you can wear with a turtleneck and a gold chain.

On a related note:

The only clothing I care about (that I can wear, anyways) is coats. (I also like hats, but I can't stand to wear them, because I have a rather warm head, so they're always insufferably warm.)

One of my most prized possessions is my vintage WWII U.S. Army overcoat; my biggest issue with it was always that I felt a little funny about wearing it because I'm not actually a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army (or anywhere else). Anyways, today I put a button back on and took off those patches, and now it's just all-around awesome and I love it so much.

I just wish I lived somewhere where I could wear it for more than a month or so out of the year.

I bought new pants and a new dress shirt, thus completing my new favourite outfit that I've been gradually building forever.

Red t-shirt
Black dress shirt
Black slacks
Black shoe-boots
Black socks
Red-and-black checkered tie
Red-and-black checkered wristbands
Red-and-black checkered scrunchie
Red-and-black checkered wallet
Black ring with a simple square face

It's super minimalist. I can change between "high-casual" and "low casual" by taking off the tie and unbuttoning the shirt, wearing it like a jacket instead.

i asked him to make me some shoes with Legion painted on them

because Legion is the coolest enemy ever, and it would make a rad pattern on shoes what don't judge me

i will post pictures of them if he makes them for me

Say, my jeans keep wearing out in the inner thighs from biking, right near where all the crotch seams meet up. These holes are impossible to repair or patch, so I wind up throwing away pants that otherwise perfectly good. Annoys me to no end.

So, taking recommendations on the most durable brand of jeans. I've mixed results on recommendations of stuff through google searches, so just wondering if anyone here had any input.

I used to have that exact same problem with pants, tearing in that exact spot.

I've started ordering stuff from Land's End.  I get khakis, not jeans, but they seem to last plenty long.

oh hey fashion

Guys who pay attention to their outfits are hawt.

I wear lolita half the time. So, like $800 outfits. Unless it's stuff I made, or knockoff offbrand.

At the office I wear above the knee skirts and over-the-knee socks, with knit shirts and cardigans. When I'm lazy I'll sometimes wear pants. Skinny jeans are actually pretty comfy.

I'm generally always somewhere between neo-victorian and schoolgirl.

I don't wear jeans. Ever... I don't think I've owned a pair of jeans since I was in 4th grade. Seriously, I wear either khakis or dress slacks. Also, for the bit I was an overnight manager at wal-mart I actually wore carpenter pants because, you know, I did most of my work with the remodeling crew and having a hammer loop and pockets durable enough to put nails in and not get stabbed was useful.

This is a lie. I tried once. I could not pull them up past my fat knees. My fashion depends on whether or not I feel like caring that day. Most of the time this is Not. Sometimes this is Not Not.

Dress like you're British if you want to impress the ladies. Fun fact: the shirt cost more than the entire suit. A cheap suit that fits properly always looks better than an expensive one that doesn't.

My fiancée spotted me drinking Anchor Steam outside the pub on her way home from work and decided to take a photograph because she thought it was funny that the only giveaway that I'd been drinking all day was my messed-up tie.

AAAaaaaaaaaah I want this dress. I need to make three times as much money so I can get that dress.

Ainty: I don't think people with fat knees are meant to wear skinny jeans. As one might expect from the name. But they're comfy 'cause they have spandex in them. Like wearing thick tights.
