High-Context Discourse / My my my Telephone
« on: June 09, 2010, 09:09:57 PM »
Been paying month-to-month on AT&T for quite some time now waiting until a smartphone came out that piqued my interest. Looks like now is a good time to get one with the new iPhone 4G, the Verizon Incredible and the Sprint Evo are all pretty awesome from what I can tell. I really want a front-facing camera phone for video-chatting options and I have 4G Sprint network access in my area, so I'm leaning a lot towards it at the moment, but the iPhone sure is shiny. Here are my current feelings, feel free to weigh in and try to influence me.

iPhone Pros:
higher screen resolution
slimmer design
gyroscope for gaming
good battery life

iPhone Cons:
video chat limited to wi-fi
not running Android, so intentionally-staggered updates
crappier camera
AT&T 3G network
data plan restrictions

Evo Pros:
Android OS, although proprietary build
Sprint 4G network
unlimited video chat
holy shit, a kickstand
on-paper better camera
bigger screen
ability through Sprint to upgrade phone in a year if I don't like it

Evo Cons:
why the fuck did they design the camera sticking out like that?
pretty abysmal battery life
bigger and heavier
lower resolution screen
Sprint? (I've always had AT&T, so it can't be much worse, right?)

Real Life / Google Voice
« on: October 05, 2009, 03:24:52 PM »
So I got accepted earlier this week into Google Voice's beta test after applying two months beforehand. It gives you a new phone number that you can choose from any area code (I chose D.C.) and forwards to your regular cellphone. Any voicemails you receive are stored online in a sound file as well as translated into text and sent to you in an SMS if you want. There are a bunch of other neat features, like cheap international calls and telemarketer protection that I'm still exploring. Anyone else have any opinion of it so far? Message me if you want to exchange #s.

Real Life / Near-Death Experiences
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:05:35 PM »
Had one yesterday. This is the second time I've almost died while rock climbing. The first one was when I hadn't secured the straps on my harness properly and they popped open while descending from the top of the cliff, sixty feet up. Luckily I had good hands and footing, so I just hung there while a guy climbed up and re-strapped my harness. Yesterday, I took a scary leader fall and fell about fifteen feet, with the rope catching me inches before hitting some menacing spiky boulders directly beneath my head and spine.

In theory, it makes you realize your mortality and prioritize your goals and time better. We'll see if that actually comes true.

Media / Netbooks!
« on: March 10, 2009, 09:05:16 PM »
I've always had a thing for miniaturized technology. I own a Tomy Bit CharG remote control car. I still have a Xircom REX 6000. So it's no shocker that once I saw my brother's new shiny netbook, I had to have one for myself. I have somehow gotten this far in life without owning a laptop, and because I still have several years of law school or graduate school ahead of me, I had no problem justifying the purchase. I got one of the new ASUS eeepc 1000HE's in blue and it is my darling. It is pretty big for a netbook, with a 10" screen and weighing in at just over 3 lbs, but I couldn't imagine downgrading to something smaller. I'm running XP and planning on upgrading the memory to 2 GB for my experiments with gaming on the thing. So far I've gotten Oldblivion, C&C3, Diablo II, CS, RO, and World of Goo to run on the thing. What else should I put on it, games and apps included? Who else has one? Experiences?
