High-Context Discourse / Simple Machines Forum
« on: January 13, 2014, 08:53:57 AM »
So it's becoming increasingly less of a secret that a migration of some sort is imminent.  I'm going to be using this opportunity to sever some limbs and fix a lot of the stuff that has been left broken around here for a little too long.  One of those broken things is SMF 2.0.6, and more specifically, karma.

From SMF 2.0 on, stuff we used to love/hate around here, like karma reasons, has been unsupported and curiously just keeps on remaining unsupported.  It's getting to the point where the only way to build the Brontoforums we deserve need want is to drop SMF and try to find something that's got the kind of candy we're looking for.  This of course will necessarily require a fresh start.

Now, that doesn't mean we have to delete stuff.  We've already demonstrated that you can comfortably run an entirely separate instance of the forum (Wrath) on the same server and not be any worse off for it.  I can pretty easily restore this thing, and stuff it in a subdomain like prehistoric.brontoforum.us (or go buy apatoforum.us just to be punchy) so that people can still go back and read The End and stuff.  Either way I sort of have to rebuild SMF and figure out a way to stick all the past several years of posts back in*, because we're going to be salting the Earth pretty hard when this move takes place.

People get attached to things, though, so I'm putting it up for debate now while there's still a pretty good lead time on whatever is about to happen.  Take your vote and comment if you've got any suggestions about what we can do to make this place more tyrannical!!!

I mean, gnilley.

This place is already pretty tyrannical.

* Which I already did once when we moved from gamespite to brontoforum, so it must not be that hard.  I just kinda forget absolutely everything about how to do it.

2013 was the year where we experienced glorious achievement mixed with pitiful misfortune.  Year of Luigi indeed.

Exactly what it says on the tin. Toss out your thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams about a possible meetup, someday, somehow, and probably westish.

For my purposes it would have been neat to do it this year since I still have to burn two weeks of vacation somehow but it's probably too late for that and we're entering into the holiday season.  Oh well.

Your turn!

Real Life / 2012!
« on: December 31, 2012, 03:36:25 PM »
Well, my weight is pretty good right now, money's fine, don't hate my career all that much yet, social needs are taken care of, the world hasn't exploded and Mitt Romney is not President.  On the one hand, this means I'm having a uniquely difficult time doing resolutions this year, but on the other hand, it means that despite the reams of bullshit that's been going down, 2012 was overall... pretty okay?

Huh.

Real Life / How Do You Take Your Coffee/Tea?
« on: June 14, 2012, 09:46:04 AM »
I take my coffee as black, strong and bitter as I possibly can.  It's not SUPPOSED to taste good, damn it, it's supposed to wake you up!

How about you?

So for various reasons I have been forced to completely remove the old Avatar thread.  Completely.

Here is the new Avatar thread.

Real Life / Racist Moments
« on: February 04, 2012, 03:46:29 PM »
We all have them.  Sometimes they're amusing enough to share!  And then sometimes they'll get you lynched.

So I was clicking through this chick's profile (don't ask me where or why) and thinking to myself, "God DAMN, she's got a weird nose."

Keep clicking.

"You know what?  I bet she's Jewish."

Clicking some more.

"She's GOT to be Jewish.  Fuck it."

I check it out.

Yep.

Real Life / So Much for 2011
« on: December 31, 2011, 09:59:20 PM »
2011 is a year in which I was promoted, made a lot of money, bought my own place, spent a nice time with a very tiny girl and generally got ahead in life.

Also, every single other person I know in some way lost almost everything dear to them, so I'd trade it all off in a fucking heartbeat.

Oh well.  2012 is another chance for everyone.  Let's do our best.

Thaddeus Boyd's Panel of Death / California's Tits are on Fire
« on: November 01, 2011, 03:07:34 PM »
Decided to make a new topic instead of necroing a random one.

Level 3 Alert reported at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in... well, San Onofre, but basically "minimum acceptable distance from San Diego for a nuclear plant" for those of you who don't know the geography here.

No further news yet.

Gaming Discussion / Steamworks

It appears that the box copy has Steamworks.  So, probably not getting that.

Er?  My understanding is that Steamworks is a relatively unobtrusive, one-time registration sort of thing.  It's not much worse than having to enter a CD-key unless you really never ever want anyone to know what games you've bought ever.

Netflix raising their prices was kind of inevitable, but I wasn't expecting FULL 50% RATE HIKE LOL.  Are you running a fucking insurance company?

Media / Special Needs Ponies
« on: June 04, 2011, 09:56:49 PM »
There's been a rising call for an airing of the smash hit "ok so" on Outer Heaven.  The reasoning is that nobody wants to take their own time and effort to track down and watch this girly crap, but if it were to be shown as a regular thing, that would give them an excuse to watch it and maybe get the jokes.

This is of course ignoring the fact that, you know, it is shown regularly.  On an actual television station.  But anyway.

His Tyranny King Grumpypants of Outer Heaven, in his infinite selfishness, has struck down the notion of showing the cartoon during the OH regular hour, leaving me, your friendly and all powerful Server Wizard, to find some other time to show it in a block.  Let's call it Remedial Ponies... no wait, that's Bongo's thing.  Let's call it Special Needs Ponies.

Haw haw my block is dumber than yooooour blooooock.

Anyway, we need a time we can all agree on for this.  So far the input I've received is:

* Not on Saturday.
* Not on Sunday.
* Daddy says I'm not supposed to let you touch my bathing suit area.

So, anybody who's interested in this cast, please post here with a time that would actually work for you kthx.
