Just a bit south of the snowy mountain town is a temperate forest, just south of that is a huge, blistering desert. Hooray for video game geography!

Music: Castle Figaro

The king and Locke headbang at each other a bit in hushed conversation. The character sprite animation is leaps and bounds above what it was in Final Fantasy 5, and it's a shame how poorly this screenshot LP is going to capture some of it.

King: Oh... my apologies! How rude of me to turn my back to a lady on our very first meeting!

Locke: Well, I'll catch you two later!
Edgar: So, you're an Imperial soldier, right? Don't worry. Figaro and the Empire are allies. Feel free to rest here for as long as you'd like. It's not in my blood to harm a lady!
Terra: Why are you being so kind to me? Is it because of my... abilities?
Edgar: I'll give you three reasons. First of all, your beauty has captivated me! Second... I'm dying to know if I'm your type! I guess your... abilities... would rank a distant third.
Terra: ...? What's the matter?
Edgar: Guess my technique's getting a bit rusty...
Terra: Hmm... I suppose a normal girl would have felt something from those words. But... not me...

It's a settled area and I'm free to roam and talk to people now.

Guard: Now that Gestahl has the power of Magitek at his command, he's set his sights on world domination.

Soldier: You wouldn't know by looking at it, but this castle is loaded with advanced technology. For example... Whoops! Heh... It's all top-secret!

Guard: Figaro Castle is the most advanced structure in the world!

Librarian: Scholars all over the world are studying magic. But you can only learn so much about something without seeing it...

Scholar: The ancients once wielded a force known as "magic". Those who mastered the art were called "magi".

Yet Another Guard: Figaro has an alliance with the Empire.

Chambermaid: Our king showers his attention on women. Young, old, pretty, or plain... No one is safe!

Maid: Not too long ago, the king tried to hit on the high priestess. Oh, did she ever let him have it! I'm sure he's made a pass or two at you already, hasn't he?
Terra: ...

Nice view.

Music: Coin Song

Edgar: Are you blind? Haven't you seen how thin his face has become?
Youth: ...? ...What do you mean?

High Priestess: He was just a boy when he left -- even smaller than his brother. I often wonder where he is now, and what he's doing...

If it weren't for limited graphical space on the original cartridge, I'm sure they would have picked a different sprite for Sabin in that scene. He's supposed to be a scrawny teenager, but he shows up as a tank-top wearing muscle-head.

Little girl: His Highness said he'd marry me when I got old enough!

Lookout on the West Tower: The Gestahlian Empire has already overthrown all three of the other nations on the southern continent. It's only a matter of time before they make their way up here...

Lookout on the East Tower: The advanced weapons and other items we manufacture here are shipped to South Figaro.

Engineer: The Figaro Castle engine room is down those stairs. The engines are currently undergoing maintenance so we can be ready to move at a moment's notice if the need arises.

The prisoners will raise a stink...

...literally, in some cases...

...but generally don't have much important to say.

There's a reference to the last game locked up in here, too.

Chancellor: I've heard tell that the entire matter was settled by the flip of a coin...

Music: Kefka

Kefka: Edgar, you pinhead! Why do you have to live out in the middle of the stinking desert? These recon jobs are the pits!

Kefka laughs. I should probably keep the link to that video handy, since he tends to do it a lot in scenes he's in.

*shove*

I get to control Edgar for a bit now, rather than Terra.

Now's as good a time as any to give him the Mithril Spear I nicked off of Mog. Locke and Terra can't use it, but it's a sizeable boost to Edgar's attack power.

And while the Figaro citizens who badmouth their king don't have anything new to say, they at least have the decency to be ashamed of saying it to his face.

Edgar: Just what is the Empire up to?
Imperial Escort: That's none of your concern.

Edgar: We have an alliance...
Imperial Escort: An alliance? With this miserable little sandpit? Don't make me laugh!

Kefka: A girl of no importance recently escaped from us. We heard she found refuge here.
Edgar: This wouldn't have to do with that "witch" everyone's been whispering about, would it?
Kefka: Lies! She merely stole something of minor value! Is she here?
Edgar: That's a tough one... There are more girls in here than grains of sand in the desert. A man couldn't possibly keep track of them all!
Kefka: Oh, Edgar... You know you only stand to lose from trying to hide her from us! Hee-hee-hee... I truly hope nothing happens to your precious Figaro!

Edgar: Where's Terra?

Edgar: Being a king's not all tea and crumpets. If you'll excuse me...

Terra: Locke, right? ...Edgar told me about you. Is it true that you're a thief?
Locke: I'm a TREASURE HUNTER!
Locke: On the surface, Edgar pretends to support the Empire. Truth is, he's collaborating with an underground resistance group called the Returners. I serve as their go-between. The old man you met in Narshe is one of us, too.

I don't know why nobody wants to say the guy's name. It's "Arvis".

Terra: The Empire... But, I'm an Imperial soldier!
Locke: Not anymore. They were using you. That's all! Things are different now.
Terra: It's just... I don't know what I should do. Whenever I try to think, it just makes my head hurt even worse...
Locke: All that matters is that you make your own decisions from now on. You don't have to think too hard right now. You'll know what you want to do when the time comes.

Kefka: Bring me the girl. Now!
Edgar: I have no idea what you're talking about!
Kefka: Oh? Then...enjoy the barbecue! Hee-hee-hee!

It's dated now, but when the game was new, a Beavis and Butt-head reference was topical.

The towers on the sides of the castle are drawn in, towards the central structure.

Well, that's one way to put out a fire.

Mental note: despite their lumbering frames and massive bulk, a Magitek armor is capable of outrunning a chocobo.

Magitek Armor attacks with Metal Punch (despite those imposing claws), Metal Kick (despite the very real risk of tipping over, given their construction) and Tek Laser (which lacks the elemental properties in party-controlled Magitek).

Edgar has an automatic crossbow, which deals more damage than even his upgraded spear, and always hits every enemy on the screen.

Terra has her tricks, too.

Locke: What made you jump like that all of a sudden?
Edgar: D-d-did y-y-you just see what I saw? You did, right? Right!?
Locke: Yeah, this kid's really something, huh?
Edgar: Really... something!? That was magic! MA-GIC!
Locke: M-M-M-M-MAGIC!? She used magic!?

Dude, harsh.

Edgar: What...what exactly was that just now?
Terra: I'm sorry, I...

Locke shoves Edgar out of the way. You'd think a king would be better at diplomacy.

Locke: I didn't mean to make such a big deal out of it.
Edgar: Nor did I, it just... surprised me. I mean I've never actually seen magic before! Where did you...?
Terra: ...
Locke: It doesn't matter, does it, Edgar? Terra can use magic and we can't. That's all there is to it. The fact is... her magic could really help us right now.
Terra: Thank you, Locke! Thank you, Edgar!

Terra winks, a split-second graphical change that I completely fail to screenshot.

The Magitek pilots finish the cigarette break they were taking while the party worked out their interpersonal problems and the battle resumes. But there aren't any gimmicks on either side, and it's just a matter of time before someone runs out of HP.

"Son of a submariner" in the SNES version.

Terra: Were those bad people? I... I'm scared...
Edgar: Terra, there's someone we'd like you to meet...
Locke: Like I told you before, we're members of the Returners...
Edgar: Would you be willing to meet our leader? Magic is going to be the key to winning this war.
Terra: Magic...
Edgar: That esper reacted to your magical powers. There's got to be a relationship...
Terra: I don't know any more than you do. These powers just come naturally to me.
Edgar: But no human is born with the powers you have!

Terra's chocobo stops, as stunned as anyone at Edgar's terrible manners.

Terra: ...What should I do?
Edgar: The Empire will be coming after us. They want your powers for their own. And if they get them, the world is done for. Terra, you want to understand your own powers, don't you?
Edgar: Then I think you should meet with Banon. He may be able to help you find out more about why you have them.
Terra: ...
Locke: Please... Edgar's right.
Edgar: There's a cave just south of here that leads to South Figaro. Let's head in that direction.

Chocobos are now over-the-shoulder views on a Mode 7 map.

Wark!

Stop swooning!

I do enjoy how for the first part of the game, everyone wants to stick their dick in Terra, but then Locke meets Celes and everyone just gives up.

I guess when the game's female cast is an emotionless amnesiac girl, an emotionless amazonian girl, and a kid, (and possibly a mime) you don't really get a lot of romance options.

Hmm... Locke has his kneejerk "YOU HAVE AMNESIA YOU ARE MY WARD NOW I WILL ALWAYS PROTECT YOU BECAUSE BACKSTORY" and Edgar flirts as a way of saying hello. Sabin and Banon skip it and everyone else is during/past the post-Celes forgetting of it, so

Protip: Don't loot the chests in the Figaro Cave until you are on Locke's scenario and you'll get slightly better items.

To prevent more Brentai-the-Paladin nonsense I'm keeping the default names unless there is some massive surge of support to change them.

I would have much rather been Brentai-the-Treasure-Hunter than Brentai-the-Paladin, but that's life I guess.

Edgar: South through the cave, and eastward to South Figaro. We'll then make for the Returner headquarters in the north. Return to the castle and pass the word along.
Soldier: Do I look like I can burrow through the goddamn sand or something? Understood, sire! Take care!

Final Fantasy games tend to swing pendulum-like between "detailed character customization system" and "static character mechanics with better-defined character development".

Final Fantasy 3 introduced the job system with interchangeable, nameless characters.
Final Fantasy 4 had static you-learn-X-spell-at-Y-level improvements with characters that developed over the story.
Final Fantasy 5 refined the job system and allowed skills to be transferred between jobs for the first time, but characters didn't really develop more than "adventurer", "princess", "Mary Sue", and "pirate who is also a princess".
Final Fantasy 6 swings back the other way. It's basically Everyone Gets Character Development: The Game, but each character is stuck doing their own special ability for the entire story (with one major exception to be found in the middle of act two). Most of the characters we'll be recruiting have shades of previous standard jobs, but almost always with a twist.

Terra's job is given as "Magitek Elite". This is functionally "red mage"... sort of. Her special ability until further notice is the ability to use magic, with a fondness for fire-elemental spells. But there's no clear-cut line to say she gets "offensive" or "defensive" magic, because without further interference she'll learn Cura, Raise, Arise, and Teleport -- along with Firaga, Holy, Break, Flare, and Ultima. Her equipment isn't particularly mage-like, either: she can equip robes and flails, or go for heavy armor and knightswords.

Locke's job is given as "Adventurer". This is functionally "thief" (although he'd be offended to hear it)... sort of. He's got the Steal ability, the speed, and the fondness for knives and boomerangs... but like Terra, can equip heavy armor and knightswords.

Edgar's job is "Machinist". This is functionally... um... ah... hmm. Edgar's skills don't really have an analogue to the established job system, because there's not a job where you buy your damage- and status-dealing skills in a shop and deploy them without MP cost or other penalty. His go-to skill for now is summoner-esque, with attacks that damage, confuse, or poison the entire enemy party, but later he supplements it with single-target attacks and the ability to inflict elemental weaknesses on foes.
Given his speed and vitality scores, Edgar is functionally the opposite of a summoner, and his equipment preference is for spears, shields, and heavy armor.

As MetalSlime alluded, and despite the lack of anything in the game indicating this might be the case, the chests in this cave have some crappy gear now. If you wait until the next time you're obligated to travel through this dungeon, they're better. So I skip them.

It's not a long cave and doesn't have a boss.
