Constantine was the one fated to bring balance back to this thread, at a terrible cost.

Sometimes I wonder why there are two video threads, but without even watching that, I know.

A blog I read had that in there, I had to force it on others.  You're lucky I spared you the zebra.

What's so terrible about that green day cover Constantine? I mean it strikes me as kind of mediocre, but it's clearly put you off something fierce.

See

It's the anti-consumerist song being played by corporate band Green Day on American Idol.  American Fucking Idol, the worst thing to happen to music since the 60s. (Note, when I say 60s I'm not referring to the music but the business of music)

Color me ignorant, but why is American Idol the worst thing to happen to music since the 60's? And wouldn't you want the audience of the worst thing to happen to music since the 60's to be exposed to this song?

I'm not going to speak for Constantine about the music angle, but I can safely say that American Idol is the worst thing to happen since the 60s, yeah.

It has to do with how it is not about music as a cultural or creative force, but entirely about the manufacture and commodification of music and people as brands.  The purpose of the competition is not to pick who is the best singer, but which one is the most palatable and marketable.  It is the world's largest focus group with ads.

In this way music no longer becomes about individual creative talent but about increased product awareness and the fantasy narrative of "achieving the dream".  The contestants aren't asked to write or compose music, merely to regurgitate songs that have already been proven hits as closely as possible.

The reason it is vile to put "Working Class Hero" on there is not that it is exposing the anti-corporatist song to a new audience, but that it in fact undercuts the message and meaning of the song.  It, like the people and songs processed for mainstream consumption, simply becomes another thing to sell, another thing to buy.  Like Green Day, it becomes a pre-packaged attempt to sell anti-consumerism.  The buyer becomes unaware that by trying to subvert the system, he unwittingly becomes a participant in it.

Looks like that copy of The Rebel Sell is making the rounds. Or the spirit and understanding behind it is (which is even better than everyone just reading the same book to gain an insight, because it means folks are picking this shit up on their own).

Good!

I could be mistaken on this, but the emphasis on the singer-songwriter seems pretty recent, in fact it seems like a product of the music industry. Most of my favorite artists do write their own music, but I don't think a performance artist should be dismissed for not writing their own music, or even for focusing on charisma. Some truly great music and musicians have come out of music factories.

Also, in a truly bizarre yet roundabout way, nothing has demonstrated the death of the freewheeling creator more than the lack of trashed hotel rooms. Too many corporate handlers these days are employed to keep any expensive shenanigans to a minimum.

I mean, come on, NOBODY drives a car into the pool, sets the walls on fire, and runs around with the rest of the band in drag for the whole weekend anymore.

Real quick glance at wikipedia says that about 80% of the #1 hits in 1960 were recorded by somebody that didn't have writing credits on the song, but in 2007 only one of the 18 #1 hits was performed by somebody who did't have writing credits.
