Same-sex marriage in WA is holding a 52-53% positive, but that's close enough to make me way too nervous for an all-mail, only-needs-a-postmark-on-election-day state.

The "crime victims" law passed overwhelmingly.  It sounds like a good idea in theory but in practice I think it's a Stand Your Ground law.

118's still neck-and-neck.  119 passed.  120's the one that didn't, which is good.  A bunch of others just blew by but I didn't catch them all.

They're calling it for Arpaio.  Not surprised but disappointed.

Hey Justice Department?  Fuck you.

Colorado and Washington legalize marijuana.

Maine becomes the first state to legalize gay marriage by ballot initiative instead of by the legislature or courts.

MEANWHILE: A perfectly decent concession speech by Romney.  Kudos.

I expected the sarcastic face when he said he'd pray for Obama's success. The same face talking about how much he likes his wife? Whoa

Colorado and Washington legalize marijuana.
the Washington law is worse than the status quo for marijuana users, but it's probably an important step towards federal.

Tied for first.

Looks like Oregon's marijuana measure is going to fail. Oh well, by the time the next one rolls up (hurr) we'll probably be able to point at Colorado and Washington and say "they legalized pot and didn't turn into dystopian crime-ridden hellholes! We can do it here too!"

I had just posted, "Happy election night, everybody. Enjoy either your victory or your consolation beer, affiliation depending!" realized how similar that was to following sports, and got even more depressed than usual about the state of our nation.

Hey, man, we must have built a pretty strong foundation if we can treat our policy making procedures like football and not have it all fall apart around us.

Yeah, it occurred to me awhile back that I follow elections and voting records the same way some people follow baseball stats.  And recently, ambivalent about watching the debates, I remarked, "Well, it IS my Super Bowl, even if I hate both teams that are playing this year."

Good Obama speech, because it played to his strengths -- long on soaring rhetoric and sweeping general statements, short on actual policy of any damn sort.

Wish I could still get as excited about the "We don't have Red States and Blue States, just the United States" speech as I did 8 years ago, but more than ever I think it was Edwards who had it right with the "there are two Americas" speech.  (Pity he turned out to be such a reprehensible human being.)  I just -- well, I'm Huey in It's a Black President, Huey Freeman!  It feels like I'm surrounded by people who are excited and inspired and I'm just sitting here with my usual expression knowing not a damn thing's going to change.

I mean, you know, he's better than the other guy.  And, as noted on my blog, I appreciate this election as a colossal "Fuck You" to Rove, Adelson, and the other pieces of shit who tried to buy it.

But you know what I'm going to get up and do in the morning?

Look for a goddamn job.

Daily Kos has a nice little breakdown along identity lines. The grand takeaway? There are not enough men or white people to control the nation anymore.

Also, other fun things I like looking at during elections: As of right now, Obama is at 59,583,302 in the popular vote*. That puts him about 10 million below his 2008 victory. He does, however, still have a lot of votes coming in from mail ballots which have not been counted. There's a good chance that Obama in 2012 will also beat McCain in 2008, who had 59,934,814 votes.

Oh, and, from that Daily Kos link, Obama got 96% of the black women vote.  That just about sums up the results of Romney's campaign right there.

My favorite is the tweet right before everything that's all "remember no matter who wins, we still have a lot of problems" and then immediately following that he just slams right the fuck over into WE SHOULD MARCH ON WASHINGTON
