Just on the offchance there's someone here aching to see more comics from me -- but doesn't follow me on Twitter, and hasn't been notified by some other method -- I started a new one a month ago and I've been updating it weekly ever since.

Now, to disappear into IRC once more! whee!

"The video game ad had the playground to itself for a long time once the Nintendo Entertainment System became the 800-pound gorilla in the room, an existence itself owed to the savvy marketing that allowed it to sneak onto shelves that had been burned by the previous generation of video games."

I stopped reading here as this sentence lost me.

Can you even count what came before the NES as a "generation"?

There were a couple in fact, but in most people's minds it just went Planck Era->Atari 2600->NES->SNES->N64->GameCube->GameCube with a stupid controller.

Good GOD y'all, if you pick up any volume of the print version of Gamespite Journal, make it GJ11 in color.  The layouts in these things are getting absolutely gorgeous.  Unfortunately, the price of print-on-demand is still pretty outrageous, but they run promo codes fairly often to help take a little of the sting off of them.

Are you guys being serious?

The Atari 2600, just one iteration of one console during that generation sold 30 million units over a period of about 5 years. For perspective: the NES, Famicom and all iterations of both combined over a ten year period managed 60 million units. The Atari was huge. Home videogaming was huge. Arcade videogaming was huge! Everyone was playing videogames!

The Atari didn't die out because hobbyists lost interest, the Atari died out because a videogame that was taking in tens of millions of dollars in quarters every month got ported to the Atari and sucked. Consumers lost faith in the product.

Sup thous.

Gamespite Journal 12 is now a thing that you can buy.

I've got an article on Game Gear Sonic in here that is pretty ok, and Niku has like 4 times that many articles about cooler stuff. B&W paperback is $14, and coupon code WONDERFUL saves you $15. Or, as always, you can just sit back and read them if/when they make it onto the website. I'll still love you.

so i am finally doing that thing i have been intending to do for a long time and trying to blog daily just to flex my writing muscles.  I cannot promise that it will actually be interesting or anything but all over the place!  I also cannot promise that I will ever actually use my twitter account for much more than following Retronauts and Wonderella since that's worked out for me fine so far.

Anyway: http://www.nikumatic.com is up and running and hopefully I can actually maintain some kind of post a day schedule without resorting to pictures of cats.
