I actually was able to make Apoc work pretty reliably in XP. Not sure how to do that anymore, but it was possible. I'm sure that they found a way to make it work through steam and DOSbox though.

Not making a new thread for this, but Freedom Force VS The Third Reich was almost as good as the original. Manbot is still broken as shit, but he's my favourite so I forgive him

Also, I wanted to record some of the Secret Origins for youtube, but the game won't run in a window, only full-screen, so I guess that is out

oh god my wallet (http://store.steampowered.com/)

Sortable list here (http://www.steamgamesales.com/) (not totally updated, and has some mislinks like pricing HL2: Lost Coast at $66.99, the cost of the full Valve pack durhurhur).

Advice: If there's a game you want, wait to see if it shows up during the daily sales.  Buy the ones that do, and then buy the remaining games on July 4th.  Enormous game packs probably won't get any cheaper, but component of said packs may also show up during the dailies.

I'm just amused because it hasn't even been out a full year yet.

Doom: for the uninitiated, what are those games?
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Doom on June 24, 2010, 04:05:22 PM
MDK is an action-adventure platformer game in the third person: it's pretty frantic shooting action, primarily against alien foes and their death machines. The alien architecture is uniquely gorgeous and actually alien.

What makes it awesome is that it's just generally fun as hell: you have a machine gun and can fluidly strafe, you can spontaneously snipe with full miles away zoom, your jumps are augmented by an easy to deploy and really sleek parachute, and so on. It's also by the Earthworm Jim guys(Shiny?) so it's generally funny as hell. The first one is a bit primitive but solid.

... But the second MDK is a masterpiece. The humor and writing are ratcheted up and polished, there are two extra playable characters, the pacing and challenge is awesome, and I bet you lucky pussies can adjust the difficulty for the PC versions. It's gratifyingly hard and one of the most beautiful and tricky platformers I've ever played, the other two characters are fun as hell(Max is EVEN SHOOTIER, while they made Kurt a bit stealthier and sniper dependent to provide a nice mood back and forth. The Doctor's first level is kinda hard but his play-style is totally unique and he has the best and funniest writing)... and the boss fights.

Oh God.

The Boss Fights. They're so good. They're so robust. They're so fun.

MDK2 is one of my favorite games of all time and the finale is absolutely brilliant(you can choose which of the three to beat the game with and all 3 have a unique boss fight experience + stage + cinemas for it) and I can't recommend it enough.

Broken Sword 2 and 3 are mine for just over $3! I'd have bought MDK2 off the sale as well, but the GOG version is $1 more, DRM-free, and includes a series of swank extras, so I got it full-price from them instead.

My recommendations:

Introversion Complete pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4603/) for £5/$5, which includes Darwinia, Multiwinia, DEFCON and Uplink. Darwinia is a short but interesting god game set inside a virtual computer world, and Multiwinia is a sort of fast-paced wargame involving mobs of little doods. I haven't played the other two. Definitely a good deal at $5.

The original X-Com game (http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/), included in the Complete X-Com pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/964/). Tense turn-based squad combat, and 4X-style management of research, production and finance. Aside from the dated graphics and interface, it's very good.

Mount & Blade Warband (http://store.steampowered.com/app/48700/). The original Mount & Blade is a single-player real-time mediaeval combat game, and comes approved by Stush and Thor. You can raise a personal army, fight on horseback or on foot, and trade goods. Warband adds a multiplayer mode, new features, and improved graphics.

Stush quite likes Jagged Alliance 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/1620/). A friend who enjoys flight sims recommends IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/15320/).

He said, filling his cart to the brim.

Actually I didn't see a single thing I wanted except Indigo Prophecy, which I suspect is better to get somewhere else.

Telltale Pack is always tempting but the way it works means there's also always incentive to wait.

Rocket Knight (http://store.steampowered.com/app/19030/) is also pretty darn good at $7.50.  It doesn't have the patented Treasure wackiness of RKA, but it's a fun, solid platformer.  Well, as long as you don't play boring pussy-mode, anyway.

If you like Heroes of Might and Magic and didn't pick up the King's Bounty games (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2520/) during the last sale, grab 'em this time around.  They might go up for a daily, who knows.

Multiplayer games: I bought Left 4 Dead 2 yesterday, and bought the original Left 4 Dead in the last Steam sale. I already own Multiwinia, and recommend you buy the entire Introversion games pack since at $5 for four games I don't see it getting any better value.

Today: The Civ4 pack is exceptional value. Civilization 4, Colonization, Civ4: Beyond the Sword and Civ4: Warlords, all for £6.24.

Any opinions on Flotilla and Dawn of War II?

The original Civilization was voted #1 Commodore Amiga game of all time (http://www.warblade.as/feature01.html), with Colonization voted #18.

Other Steam games on the Amiga Report Top 100 Games list include Monkey Island 1 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32360/) (#4), Monkey Island 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32469/) (#6), UFO: Enemy Unknown (http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/) (#16), Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (http://store.steampowered.com/app/6010/) (#55) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (http://store.steampowered.com/app/32310/) (#83).

Sequels or re-makes appear for Civilization (#1), Settlers (#9), X-Com (#16), Colonization (#18), Speedball II (#25), Railroad Tycoon (#29), Sid Meier's Pirates (#50), Championship Manager (#65), The Bard's Tale (#69), and Alien Breed (http://store.steampowered.com/app/22610/) (#88).

Yes it is.  Spent a few nights a couple of months back playing the game and tweeting the experience as I  crashed my car through people's houses.  It's a GTA clone with destructible buildings, and is as fun as that sounds.  Plus you can rant about space communism.
Title: Re: Steam Deals

I bought the Dawn of War II pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4026/) for £20, against my hunch to wait for a better deal. Today I noticed that the THQ Complete Pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4587/) pack contains the Dawn of War II pack and costs £26, including eighteen other games.

 :rage:

Didn't realize the Amiga was supported that late and by that many then-A-list publishers.

It did reasonably well until about 1994-1995. Commodore folded, Doom and Windows 95 were released for the IBM PC, and Sony released the Playstation. It wasn't that the Amiga couldn't keep up, hardware-wise, but that all the advanced Amiga hardware was in the form of expensive third-party expansions (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=154). So while the user base of cutting-edge Amigas was actually shrinking, the PC and Playstation user bases were taking off in a big way. After about 1997 most major publishers had left the Amiga market.

The HOL Amiga games database lists 503 commercial releases in 1994 (http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_license=1&Y_released=1994), compared to 754 in 1991 (http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_license=1&Y_released=1991). 1995 (http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_license=1&Y_released=1995) has half as many as the previous year, and half as many again in 1996 (http://hol.abime.net/hol_search.php?N_ref_license=1&Y_released=1996). Most of the big titles after that are from Amiga-specific publishers, even the Amiga ports of big titles like Myst, Quake and Quake 2.

Sweet Christmas, that's a shitload of sandbox games.  I can't tell if it's because Valve hates free time or if it's just because sandboxes are literally sixty-a-dozen now.

Tempted to overpay for Prototype, though, just for the experience of playing it literally side-by-side with Conduction Man.  I hear Alex Mercer doesn't have to bunny hop up buildings all the time to get around.

Beat Hazard

Holy shit I just got Survival Champion after this

The Black Mages - The Decisive Battle (FFVI) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrorzcG68BI#)

followed immediately by this

VGM - Ys (Final Battle FC Ver. Arrange) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moqji2ehHBU#)

AAAAAAAAH

Then I blew up a boss that was hanging around after the end of the song and I guess it can still kill you while it's exploding.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing that'll explain getting hooked on it. I've said it about Audiosurf and I'll say it about this: these games have the best soundtrack in the world.

I knew this game had me at about 3:00 here:
Beat Hazard - Laguerro del Mundo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf0tZpTq6UA#)
A quiet part starts and takes away my firepower, just as the boss warning appears. Uh-oh. The huge thing floats in slowly, almost serenely, all 2001 style. I have survive for a while until 3:48, where the music picks up again and gives me huge fuckoff lasers; I wipe the boss out in a few seconds.

Oh. My. God.

Of course now that I have some experience under my belt it's not a big deal, that was on Normal and I didn't know what I was doing. But at the time that felt pretty epic.

Now that the day sales are out of the way, here are my last minute suggestions:

Introversion complete pack: is $5 for four games, and I thought Darwinia was neat
THQ pack: Stupidly good value if you own none of the Dawn of War, Call of Honor or Red Faction games yet; contains Dawn of War II which has several multiplayer fans in the Brontoforumus and environs
X-Com pack: As a gift for your friend who doesn't have it already
id games pack: Unless re-playing the entire Doom and Quake series doesn't appeal to you
Mount & Blade Warband: Haven't played this yet, but is a good game assuming it's at least as good as the first Mount & Blade and you like hitting guys with swords from horseback
Civ4 complete pack: It's like Master of Orion but on land
Jagged Alliance 2 pack: I liked this when it first came out. Stush is a big fan, and says the combat is somewhat like X-Com but the interface and graphics are better

Things I didn't like:

Dawn of War II pack: It's a great game, I just wish I'd noticed that the THQ pack was only £6 more and contained twenty other games besides. (This happens every Steam sale)
Flotilla: Moving things in 3D space is hard :(

Honestly, I'd just use the category system they have now.  Just make a new category for games you've beaten and there you go.
Of course, I love making categories and rearranging them constantly, so it may just be me.

THQ Pack, M&B Warband get.

Messing around with Warband today, learned that "normal" means hard mode. That was good to know.

Haven't touched any of the other games yet. Eventually I'll end up talking to MAdMax and be happy I finally have DoW2, or find someone that wants to campaign with. Metro 2033 may get some play tonight.

I at least got a full play-through of Bioshock 2 before the game became unplayably crashy on what I am assuming is the fucking Microsoft Live end of the deal. Always crashes at the main menu when it tries to pop in the "Continue" option for my last saved game.

So you know, I just youtubed the other endings I didn't get and tried to minimize the bitterness.

Ghostbusters, Broken Sword II + III, and Beat Hazard are now mine -- but I mainly decided to sublimate my desire to get games on Steam into getting non-Steam games I actually intend to play/have resale value when I'm done with them! That way my wallet is sufficiently emptied of cash and I have a much greater chance of getting a return (of entertainment value/cash from selling the physical copies I bought) from my investment. This was a nice change of pace, and I recommend it to anyone who's interested.

I'd list what I got instead, but I also satiated the desire to fill my hard drive by loading it with sentai-fetish porn -- and this is board is safe-for-work now, isn't it? :wakka:

I'm waiting to see how this week plays out, but I have a feeling I'm going to end up just getting the Big Stupid Deal pack, since it's basically 26 Games I'm Guilty of Pirating and One I Never Bought the Expansions For.

Because if there's one thing my 40% Beaten backlog needs right now, it's the entire history of PC gaming since 1993.

I bit.  Let's take a look at what I just bought:

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth: Never played it.
Commander Keen: Only played the shareware version.
DOOM 3: Only played the demo.
DOOM 3 Resurrection of Evil: Only played the demo of the game it's an expansion of.
DOOM II: Only played bits and pieces of it.
Fallout 3: Pirated and beaten, but not with any DLC.
Final DOOM: Only played the shareware version, later pirated for the multiplayer but only played a bit of Episode 2.
Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders: Only played the shareware version.
HeXen II: Only played the shareware version.
HeXen: Beyond Heretic: Only played the shareware version.
HeXen: Deathkings of Dark Citadel: This game sounds like bullshit.
Master Levels for Doom II: Never played it.
QUAKE: Only squinted my way the shareware version.
QUAKE II: Only played the demo, later pirated for multiplayer.
QUAKE II Mission Pack: Ground Zero: Never played it.
QUAKE II Mission Pack: The Reckoning: Never played it.
Quake (not QUAKE) III Arena: Pirated for multiplayer, which is the only thing you can pirate it for anyway.
QUAKE (not Quake) III Team Arena: Never played it.
QUAKE Mission Pack 1: Scourge of Armagon: Never squinted my way through it.
QUAKE Mission Pack 2: Dissolution of Eternity: Never squinted my way through it.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Only played the demo.
Rogue Warrior: Never played it.
Spear of Destiny: Never played it.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind: Pirated but only got as far as dicking around some dwarf ruins.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Holy shit I bought this game!  But not the DLC.
The Ultimate Doom: Oh wait this is DOOM 1, not Final DOOM.  Well excu-use me.
Wolfenstein 3D: Say it with me: Only Played the Shareware Version.

I think I just paid $70 to erase a history of cheapskate laziness rather than serial larceny, but whatever.  I now have enough new games that if I quit my job and did nothing but play them all day I'd probably not be done until next year.  If I had the time for it I'd do something ridiculous like Let's Play Every id Game Ever Except Those Two Quake Games, but I don't, so leave me alone.

I do plan to play them in chronological order starting from Commander Keen all the way up to You Don't Die in the Ending Now, but God knows when.  I think I might just do the entire backlog like that.

I was going to buy Quake 2 today, but then I read the forums FAQ and found out that the soundtrack is missing because it was redbook audio (where you could play it in a CD player but the first track was data? remember that?) and id didn't bother trying to port it, so I realized I'd have to go torrent an .iso of the damned thing anyways... so why bother buying it?

Once again, lazy porting defeats the purpose of selling the damned thing as a port. I wish Valve would acquire Good Old Games or something.

AI War and its expansion, The Zenith Remnant, are both 50% off in celebration of a new "micro-expansion," Children of Neinzul. AI War is a grand strategy/4x/tower defense/rts and it's really fun if you're into that sort of thing (or maybe even if you aren't).

AI War pits up to 8 human commanders in a battle with 2 highly overpowered AI. This game is all about guerrilla warfare as you try to find the AI's home planets without causing such damage as to piss the AI off enough to rain hell upon your pathetic army until you forget what not being on fire felt like.

I'm not good at explaining things, so there's a demo that gives full access to the game only your campaigns can last at most 3 hours, and that's not really enough time to win even with only 10 planets (galaxy sizes range from 10 planets to 120) and the AI set to fail mode (difficulty goes from 1 ["sandbox"] to 10 ["Doom"]).

http://www.arcengames.com/ (http://www.arcengames.com/) these people deserve your money. Also, Children of Neinzul proceeds all go to Child's Play. So, you know. Altruism and whatnot.

P.S. Arcen Games currently plan to keep updating this thing until 2013, and so far they've been doing a damn good job of it.

P.P.S. The current price is $10, $5, and $4 for base, expansion, and micro-expansion. It's usually $20, $10, and $4. And also if you don't buy it now a similar sale will probably happen in December when Expansion 2 ("Light of the Spire") comes out.

Title: Re: Steam Deals

No. The game host has the ability to turn on/off any expansions he has, in case he doesn't want them or someone joining doesn't have them. The only problem with the multiplayer is that you have to connect using the host's IP address, and they have to have ports forwarded (or else you have to use a VPN like hamachi). I heard somewhere that Arcen will fix this eventually, but their main focus so far has been on perfecting gameplay.

Edit: if you don't know anyone that you want to play this game with, or just want to jump into a public game or something, the website has a pretty active community via forums/IRC.
Title: Re: Steam Deals

I'd like a lucky rat hat myself, but eh.

As far as Tycho's hair goes, that thing is a physical impossibility. It hardly makes sense in the comic, it wasn't spectacular in PAA, and I think it's a valiant effort here.

And yeah, the voice is weird at first. Honestly, after listening to the podcasts and watching the documentaries, when I read the comic, I hear Jerry and Mike. That said, Jerry can sing and he can write a comic and he can clearly be a tremendously funny guy in a conversation but it's quite possible that he's not a verbal comedian in a context where you have lines to read and are addressing fictional cartoon characters with larger-than-life personalities instead of, you know, your best friend since small times and your work family.

Of course none of you are actually saying that Jerry should do the voice, that's entirely my first assumption. But going from there, it's gonna sound weird no matter what. I mean, there was a similar case with the PvP animated series (if anyone else here has even seen that) and the voice of Skull, which was kind of unexpectedly nasal and high-pitched, but it did work eventually, it was just a question of giving it time.

AOE3 is kinda cool since you have like a CCG deck of powers you can choose as special shipments from your home nation back in the old world. also, all the nations are a little different in terms of workers, units, and all that kinda stuff. I really liked the Ottoman Turks, who only have one offensive unit, which was kinda novel.

Oh, Hraedon (having instantly purchased it) mentioned that it actually comes with both expansions as well (Native American Beatdown and Asian Spice Fusion). So you're getting the game for more like five cents, given that the expansions weren't all that awesome!

Though China was really cool, in actuality, since they can't build individual units -- they buy "Banner Armies" which are mega-costly, but come with 4-10 units of mixed composition. So you can buy a bunch of spearmen with support from repeating crossbowmen, or guys on horseback with meteor hammers who come with complimentary flamethrowers.

Can't really think of a better place to put this, but Poker Night at the Inventory is pretty good.  A simple Texas Hold-Em simulator with some amazing table talk.  The personalities of each of the four opponents bounce off each other really well.

Who's won a character item so far?  I just snagged Max's pistol and badge.  Heavy had to ante up the new Minigun, but Max knocked him out.  I fear to think what he's going to do with that thing when he gets home...
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: François on November 22, 2010, 07:22:45 PM
I've seen all the items put up, but only won the lugermorph/badge and iron curtain. I also won enough to unlock two tables and a new deck, which is neat though far less noteworthy.

So yeah, it's a novelty poker game. Overall, I'd say some of the lines miss the mark, but I am getting my four forty-nine's worth of comedy, which is what I expected. Plus, depending on how you look at it, it's a spectacularly low price to pay to learn that I'm not a very good poker player.

I don't know if it's just random chance, but each character seems to have the appearance of a specific playing style. Max seems hard to pin down, erratic even (after getting knocked out myself I saw him fold on a straight after putting 10k in the pot); I want to say he has a tendency to bluff but maybe he's just a dumb. Strong Bad plays aggressively and I rarely see him fold. Tycho is very prudent and folds a lot; so far he's done the best out of everyone. Heavy... I don't know.

Regarding Tycho's voice, it works. I'd even say I like it. The guy's got a snarky edge, but relaxed and nonchalant still, and in a way it's a great contrast to the other characters. For my first win, the game ended in like a fifteen hand duel with Tycho and me, and I was like, "alright, the kids have left the table, now it's time for the adults to play". The d20 never makes sense though, it's just there.

All in all, no regrets here.

Well, I would expect a hyper-kinetic rabbity-thing to be erratic.

I love Tycho's M:TG references.  Drawing nine fuckin' mana in a row, indeed.

Protip: at least a few times, if you get knocked out early, stick around to watch the rest of the game.  It lets you see everyone's cards, World Poker Tournament style, so you can get a feel for how they play.

It's a really good five dollar game. One retarded hand out of a hundred isn't so bad, and I appreciate that the AI doesn't blatantly cheat. I've won plenty of showdowns that come down to my Ace High vs a Jack High. Although the AI isn't good enough to suit it's behavior properly for 1v1 poker that can come down to all-in with your 2 cards down, deal 5 and see what happens, it's generally good enough for a casual game of cards. Which I really appreciate, as the chatter is entertaining enough, the visuals are pleasant and I secretly have the entire bloodline of a family of card sharks pumping through my veins.

I just sort of wish it was a ten dollar game and they had more game types, maybe some extra players.

Tycho's plays don't bother me. I play just like him, only better (or worse depending on how you look at it) until I have enough money to be stupid. What does bother me is things that should be impossible, 3 players with the same pair for example (on top of it, one of the 3 will win for nonexistent reasons, it WAS me in that case, but still). I actually find Strong Bad or Max to me more irritating 1v1. Heavy's almost always out first so I never get a shot at him.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: François on November 25, 2010, 09:44:13 AM
Three players can have the same pair in texas hold 'em, like if three players have a pocket 8 and the fourth 8 is on the table. In that case (and in several other occurences of ties), the highest other card in play (the "kicker") is used to pick the winner. There's also one bit that's unintuitive, in how the game announces the winner in the case of a side-pot*, because it announces the player who won the most money even if that person didn't have the best overall hand. But everyone still gets the chips they win.

*: If a player goes all in, but doesn't have enough money to cover the current bet, the portion of the pot he can't afford is put in a side-pot that is awarded to the next best hand if the poorer player wins. (You can tell who is eligible to the side-pot by the initials in the side-pot display.) This is to make sure that you can't go all in with like a hundred bucks and still proceed to clean everyone else out in a single hand. If the side-pot is bigger than the main pot, the game only announces the side-pot winner; in that case, the main pot winner still gets the chips he won.

I'm really not trying to be some snooty game-hating asshole* I just haven't read a lot of reviews and out of what I have read, nothing really struck my fancy. Research suggests that it depends on strength of computer - processing power, memory.  Shitty computers can have sync problems at 15 minutes, stronger ones can keep going a lot longer.  I'd at least like the option, even if I have to edit an ini to get it.

I'm glad that Valve decided to drop that ugly as shit storybook layout, but of course now I have no idea what's on sale (because the Specials list is choked with indie shovelware).

Meanwhile, I'm glad I decided to pass on Bioshock 2 for ten, because apparently Amazon's got it on their download marketplace for five.  The gauntlet has been cast.

Well you only have 7 days left, so I don't think you could either.

I am really getting pissed at this sale. I want to buy the X-Com games, but there is that small chance that the entire pack goes on sale for like 2 bucks.
Title: Re: Steam Deals

I always have a strange relationship with Steam Sales. I don't look at them kindly. I look at them as traps, trying to getme to waste money, or spend more money on packs that include games, I'll never play, even if those packs are cheap. Or throw away 5 on a game I am vaguely interested in but will sit there uninstalled for years. If I give in, I lose money, not save it.

Though going pretty good this year. The only game I got that I might never actually play or like is Reccettear. Still feels like a moment of weakness, but I suppose I can afford my self one.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Brentai on December 24, 2010, 02:20:44 PM
I don't see the purchases I've made on sale as mistakes.  Once I stopped looking at my game library as a backlog and instead as a collection of immediately available choices, I started to enjoy video games again.  Of course you need to have enough disposable income to buy shit you won't play in the first place...

Anyway I'm probably perfectly capable of making purchases from here if anything amazing pops up.  They just haven't yet.  Telltale isn't even offering a decent backlog pack this year, which annoys the hell out of me.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Kayin on December 24, 2010, 02:24:26 PM
and instead as a collection of immediately available choices

Isn't that already what steam is?

Not to make judgement on anyones purchases or lack there of, but the way I see it, if I buy 50 dollars worth of games, if the few games I decide to actually play didn't save me 50 dollars, I've lost and would have just been better off buying those 3 10$ games at 10$s when I felt like playing them, rather than speculatively buying them at 5$ or ever 2$ during the steam sales. If you have the disposable income and don't care, whatever (I'm not exactly short on money either, but all the time spent not having any has made me eternally frugal), but I think if you actually think of the math, not even counting 'fun' (I'd personally count buying a bunch of mediocre games I play once or twice as a waste too, but the 'value' can't exactly be easily calculated), I think it's clear that you can easily sorta bone your self during a Steam sale without realizing it. Consumerism etc etc etc.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Detonator on December 24, 2010, 03:04:37 PM
The nature of steam and its sales makes that sort of calculation sort of fussy.  It's not like you can get rid of Steam games (yet), so it's entirely possible that I game I bought today won't be played for another year or two.  Yes, economics states that money NOW is more valuable than money in the future, but I think that's splitting hairs (even more than I'm splitting them now).

If I buy a game on day 1 for $50 and don't play it until it's already dropped to $20, it's safe to say that $30 was spent unnecessarily.  Steam sales, however, will generally put a game at the cheapest price it will ever be, so waiting a good deal of time to play them won't really change the cost of doing so.

But if the point is that steam sales will just nickle and dime you out of the same cash you would have spent on a full-price purchase, I can't disagree with that.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Bal on December 24, 2010, 05:30:48 PM
In fact, my general rule for steam sales of this kind is that my total purchase will be no more than a full priced console game (59.99USD). I don't always stay within this guideline, but I usually do, and I always come out ahead in terms of leisure hours had than if I had bought that full priced game.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Mongrel on December 24, 2010, 07:07:36 PM
I agree with Kayin, but my logic is much more direct: I don't feel like spending dollars on leisure items unless I want it already anyway.

True, you can save money on Steam sales, but they always put everything on sale sooner or later anyway. So if I decide I want something and the money matters THAT much, I just wait 'till the next sale.

PC port was totally fine for me.  I don't know how efficient a port it was - my system was powerful enough that it could brute force the allegedly really shitty Force Unleashed port to run fine - but it ran great and the controls were as they should be.  Setting up x360emu was tricky because you need to use the FakeAPI option and dig up VID and PID for your controller, though.

The game itself is absolutely delightful, and the haters are just haters.  If you can't enjoy Revelations as interpreted by Legend of Zelda as interpreted by Warhammer 40k then it is not a game for you and also go away I don't want to talk to you.

If you have a 360 receiver it will auto-configure to the console controls with no input. This is true of most modern console ports, but it's very nice.

I don't know. Darksiders was good in the raw gameplay department, but I found the huge environments and repetitive levels and puzzles made the second half of the game a chore. I got to about the third 'move blocks around, but move them quickly because the room resets!' puzzle and just dropped my controller in disgust.

Recettear: 8$?

Also got a gifted copy of DMC3. I probably would have bought that otherwise. Recettear is sorta a stretch for me but enough people I trust told me to give it a go so I was willing to take a slight risk on that. I already have Hoard. If you're thinking "hey, a game with controller support!" then don't. Otherwise it's exactly what it says on the box.

Also, for the next week everything by Arcen Games (http://arcengames.com/w/) is 50% off. These are the same guys that made AI War: Fleet Command, which I told everyone to buy a while back. It's still a great game. And now it has more stuff (that's what Arcen does - they keep adding more stuff).

Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: NexAdruin on June 17, 2011, 08:24:16 PM
I'm not sure. With most games that have controller support I can just plug my controller in a usb port and play. I've never had to install anything special for it to work (except for Windows's automatic driver-finder thing). Apparently, back when I played the demo Hoard was good for some controllers but not all. They updated it to make it good for more controllers, but whatever they did ruined it for some people who could previously use a controller.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Thad on June 17, 2011, 08:48:59 PM
Hm.  That doesn't really sound like an Xinput-versus-DirectInput issue (if they already had DirectInput support I don't know why they'd drop it, even if they added Xinput support -- as far as I know the two don't conflict), but I suppose it still could be.  Might be worth checking out x360ce anyway, but don't spend too much time on it if it doesn't work.  (I found I had to run Witcher 2 as an admin to get it to work but other than that it worked fine out of the box.)

Yyyyeah. It's not great. It has its moments, but the campaign is far too short, and the multiplayer has some good ideas with its drones and vehicles, but overall it felt like CoD multiplayer, which I can't stand. It mmmmmight be worth 25$ but not much more. I bought it at full price, but it came with Metro 2033 for free and I had much more fun with the latter.

The worst is, it even betrays the promise of its setting. You go in with the expectation that you'll be doing guerilla warfare, but for half the game you're backed up by a bulletproof robot tank with infinite rockets. ::(:

Jumping around to create a wishlist I stumbled on Starscape on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/20700/). Many, many moons ago I paid $20 or whatever they charged on release for it and never regretted it.

If you like top-down shooters at all you're a dumb for not spending three bucks on this.

AI War, a fantastic grand strategy/4x game, for dirt cheap. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/40400/)

Base - $2.99
Expansion 1 - $1.49 (or free for 3 tickets)
Expansion 2 - $.59
Expansion 3 - $1.49

Everything at once - $4.49

This game is worth so much more than $4.49. I can't even describe what a dealsteal this is.

It seems to be mostly unadvertised, but if you preorder Deus Ex 3 (or are brain-damaged enough to preorder Dungeon Siege III) you get an extra $25 off the ridiculously valuable Square-Eidos pack.

Alternately, if you wait, the pack will probably go on sale for the same price again later this year with both those games included.  Opportunity cost is a bitch, yo.

Mass Effect 2

Nowhere near as glitchy as you may have been lead to believe. Particularly after about a year of patching. It's still in Gamebryo, and some things can't be saved from that engine, but it was playable at launch, and is in a much better state now.

Magicka is 66% off today at £2.71. It's a very fun game and worth it for the singleplayer alone.

The complete pack with all the DLC is also 66% off at £5.77, though none of it is strictly necessary except Magicka: Vietnam (adds a new campaign-style mission, guns and airstrike magick for multiplayer, and Cannon Fodder in-jokes: all the other DLC is just equipment and arena/versus maps).

It was not well-received.

It was never going to be worth the wait, but it wound up not even living up to people's modest expectations.  From the reviews, it's got DNF's crassness but none of its charm or creativity.  I've read that Serious Sam is the game DNF should have been.

It defines the Running Backwards While Shooting school of level design. In fact, there is to be an RPG spinoff (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/07/headless-serious-sam-the-random-encounter/) in which the battle screen has your party constantly running backwards.
Title: Re: Steam Deals

Honestly, for me the one big failing of DNF is that there's not enough bad guys. If its many, many long stretches of empty hallways and rooms were filled to bursting with aliens, I could have forgiven its other flaws. There's literally tons of places in the game where I thought "man this room's layout is interesting, I bet/wish there's a big shootout here", but nothing happened.

Title: Re: Steam Deals

Re: interest in RTS and DoW2.

It should be noted that DoW2 is one of very few RTS I actually like, and people who don't like 'em should still give it a try. It's more about small group movement, so you don't have to do as much pumping out new grunts or deal with most of the bullshit micromanagement of other RTS games.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Smiler on October 14, 2011, 12:13:35 PM
Actually because you have less units to work with in involves more micromanagement. The game has less macro since you aren't dealing with resource gathering and base building and you are probably only making one unit every few minutes.

A lot of the micro comes from the bad pathing your units have.  :nyoro~n: Still an awesome game for the price. It is a lot more causal RTS since half of the effort Relic put into the game was to make your dudes look cool while they kill shit.

Pathing and accidental retreats (I DIDN't WANT THAT UNIT TO RETREAT FUCK) are the two biggest problems with this game. I hope that they fix that for DoW3, because otherwise this game is solid.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: NexAdruin on October 14, 2011, 01:34:21 PM
It is more accurate to describe Dawn of War 2 as a tactical game than a strategic one, although generally "RTS" is used for both. It's fun, but I can't get unit movements down well enough to make me not uninstall the thing whenever I need room for something else.

Zombie Driver is pretty fun for 2.50 if you have a gamepad. I can't imagine how crappy the wasd controls would be. You drive around killing zombies, and so far the game hasn't thrown any ridiculous escort missions. As long as there isn't anything where you have to protect another car or something the game is pretty solid for the price.

Also Dead Space games are really good for $20 games, really great for $5 games.

As I said in my Steam review though, bring a pad. Dead Space 1 (the only one I played so far) has the absolute worst mouse acceleration I have ever seen. It is straight up unplayable without a pad.

There is a way to fix it to make it bearable.  I think it had something to do with changing some settings on your GPU.  I recall going into my Nvidia settings and changing something.  I played Deadspace with a mouse and it was quite bearable although somewhat sluggish.

Dead Space is fine with a mouse? Then again your enemies can be frozen and the best way to fight multiple enemies is to force them to come to you while matching your weapons to the appropriate types so maybe we were playing different games.

It's that time again!  Time to rack your brains coming up with ten games to put on your wishlists.

Sometimes I get the feeling that Steam is telling me what I want to play, not the other way around.

Click by genre, top-sellers, whatever I'm interested in but is outside of my "two games a year at $60 release price" policy.

And even then I just stretch it to stuff I wouldn't mind trying and owning.

I actually have a decent spread of games I'd legitimately like to play: LA Noire, Sonic Generations, Serious Sam 3, Saints Row 3, Deus Ex, Fable. Then stuff I wouldn't mind trying like Fear and Dead Island or maybe a Lord of the Rings RTS. But they're all $50 or more so fuck that, they're not Bat Man.

But then you get to stuff like Witcher 2 and it's like "I still haven't touched Witcher 1 from last year, Steam!"

Fuck, I don't even know how to play as much Skyrim as I want without just quitting my job and hiding in my house for the rest of the month.

I'm actually making progress in my backlog!  I finished Crisis Core and started Ghostbusters.  Don't think I'll be buying any more crap on Steam for the nonce; aside from Ghostbusters I've got the Zeboyd Games bundle and this thing called Aversion or something.  On PSP I've still got FFT, FF1, maybe another playthrough of MMX as Vile, am stuck on Yellow Devil in MMPU, and haven't finished Castlevania.  And frankly there's a hell of a lot more Crisis Core that I'll probably chip away at when I've got a few minutes of free time.

Amazon's marked down Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Duodenum.  Guess I could try the latter out but I think I should hold off on the former until I've finished the Tactics game I've already got.

If I ever do.  I have a tendency to quit Tactics somewhere in the Deep Dungeon.

40% off The Witcher 2. Highly recommend. Recently a major content patch came out adding a whole slew of things, including better difficulty balancing and tutorial in the early parts of the game, as well as a new difficulty setting, and an arena to fuck around in. Making what was already the best PC RPG of 2011 even better.

Cheating yourself out of something great if you don't play this.

I had absolutely shit-all to do with the actual game on that.  I mean, I had absolutely shit-all to do with any of them, but on that one in particular they did actually let one of us QA guys have a major say in the design.  In particular, the American Hard Mode was heavily tweaked based on his feedback, which is why its difficulty curve ended up looking like a BASE jump once you get (that one core game mechanic that you can't use until halfway through the game which is fine because it becomes trivial to pump yourself up to God Tier with it after that if you're at all capable of abusing it).

Also they literally pulled the plug on me while I was fighting Hard Minerva.  Kind of stupidly upset about that.

I don't think that  because the PC version and only the PC version went on sale the day *after* Christmas means that it didn't do well. Hell, last time I looked Unleashed turned a profit. Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Brentai on December 27, 2011, 12:50:45 PM
Sonic Gen ended up down there because it was used as a primary chip in a price war between Amazon and Steam.  Steam had it at 25, Amazon went WAY below them and put it at 15 in an attempt to out-Gabe Gabe, and Gabe shrugged and put it at 10, which Amazon could only match.

The issue isn't so much that it's on sale, it's that it's a first-party, major developer, primary mascot, as-good-as-main-series game going at a literal bin price two months after release.  You'll never see that happen to fucking Mario, or even Ezio.  It makes SEGA's very best offerings look third-tier, and they needed to control that.  It's the Dreamcast being outsold by FF8 all over again.

Mainly I'm worried that it's going to make developers even more nervous about supporting the PC platform, because at some point the distributors are going to seem like an even worse problem than the pirates.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Rico on December 27, 2011, 02:14:33 PM
The thing is, that kind of pricing scheme is rapidly becoming the new norm. The potential image hit to SeGA (which is mostly because the 'console' side of the games industry is slow to react and idiots keep buying their shit at $70 like this were a Secret of Mana cartridge in 199X) is probably outweighed by the marketing and name recognition from the now-larger playerbase. I'm willing to bet they're getting their brand out there to a lot of people who didn't grow up with Sonic, or who are from that generation but were Nintendo.
Title: Re: Steam Deals

At this point we can only speculate on the number of charts, studies and hard statistics that go into setting up a lot of these sales. Valve has all the sales numbers for full retail, as well as what time of the year people are willing to spend more money, and what percentage discount brings sales up by what percent. Essentially finding the sweet spot for profit when discounting games. Good god, now that I think about it that's probably their greatest tool. Just raw information and math.

What I like to think that this all means: All they have to do is contact Activision's/SEGA's/EA's/ETC sales/marketing departments and say "We think it would be in both of our best interests to sell the game for N% off, as this has the most projected profit in our upcoming sales. Yes, it's a significant chunk, but it will also be featured on the front page of our service and everyone will see it."

There's probably a lot of negotiation in regards to the sale percentage and getting on the front page.

That's EVERYBODY'S greatest tool in the new century.  Valve's, Google's, Facebook's -- Amazon INVENTED this shit.

The issue isn't so much that it's on sale, it's that it's a first-party, major developer, primary mascot, as-good-as-main-series game going at a literal bin price two months after release.  You'll never see that happen to fucking Mario

No, you'll see a port of a 20-year-old remake of 25-year-old Mario games go for $30.

Selling games for $10 when they should be $40 is pretty much the opposite of Nintendo's problem right now.

Certainly this is a problem, particularly to Japanese developers who are wary of the PC in the first place.  For customers, of course, $10 on a just-released game seems an awful lot like a Good Thing.  And if the publishers look at the numbers and find they've made more money, then they should see it as a good thing too.

I don't see serious brand damage coming from a one-day sale (even if it's turning into something a bit longer on the Amazon end).  Users understand "sale" as something separate from "remainder bin".  This isn't a $10 game; it's a $30 game on sale for $10.

And PC gamers have different expectations.  They expect more price competition, more frequent sales, and cheaper base prices -- as a tradeoff for a platform that is fiddlier and MUCH more expensive to maintain, not to mention DRM that is frequently worse than what they'd get on a console.

(Quick tangent: finding deals, collecting games, and getting them to run are, themselves, a sort of game.  I've spent more time setting up XBMC/ROM Collection Browser, PPJoy/WiiMouse, and various emulators than I have actually using them, but getting them set up was a technical challenge that brought me satisfaction.  Same with setting up my NES and Genesis/Sega CD on an old 21" tube, or my Dreamcast on my computer monitor because my TV doesn't have a VGA port.  Hell, maybe one of these days I'll get around to injecting the driver for my graphics card so it'll work on OSX and not just Win/Lin.  ...if nothing else, these rationalizations at least make me feel better about spending money on games I haven't played yet.)

The greatest risk is that publishers will see cases like this and the takeaway will be that they need to sell more $10 games.  Far as that goes, I'm not sure it's a bad thing -- is there any reason Sonic 4 couldn't have been as good a game as Sonic Generations?  I don't think it's their budgets that made the latter a better game than the former.  If Sega decided the lesson was to make games that looked like Sonic 4 but played like the side-scrolling levels of Sonic Generations, well, there's probably a downside but I'm not seeing it.

Verging on threadsplit here, but I just noticed Stross posted about this yesterday:

Quote from: http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2011/12/the-coming-retail-apocalypse-s.html
—So suppliers are trapped in a race to the bottom, unless (a) they can find some clear value-added proposition to attract consumers other than low price, or (b) they can work out a way to reduce price transparency in order to impair the accuracy of consumers' pricing decisions.

—luxury goods and designer brands adopt strategy (a). Some other well-known organizations go this way, too: Apple is an obvious example in the consumer electronics sector. (Underlying Apple's value proposition is simplicity: a simple, easy to understand product range, pared-back industrial design, "easy to use". Also underlying their success is "easy to fix": if it goes wrong you take it to the Genius Bar and it will be fixed. Or, for a fee, they'll uplift it and fix it for you.) But what about strategy (b)?

5. Algorithmic pricing of airline tickets has been around for decades. Flights are scheduled up to a year in advance, between known end-points, with a well-known number of seats in each class. So why are there so many airline ticket types, and why do prices for a given ticket type on a given route vary depending on when you book them? The answer is that airlines have an incentive to ensure that there is a paying fare in every seat, but they also have an incentive to not discount seats if they can possibly sell them at a higher fare. So they've developed complex pricing algorithms that balance supply and demand internally and offer potential customers the highest spot price that the airline thinks the market will bear. More recently, mobile phone companies, cable TV companies, and other service suppliers offer us the "freedom" to build our own package of services, but the underlying pricing information is highly opaque. As much as I love the games I bought I did find this event to be kind of stupid. The biggest complaint I have being that most of the rewards were coupons for games that were already on sale, that we can't use until they stop being on sale. I would have preferred a setup where we trade coal directly for prizes rather than craft them into a random chance to get something that is basically useless.

Just to show how bad the odds were of actually getting anything; I completed 29 objectives, traded a game to someone for extra coal, and after 4 crafts and all of the different objective completions, I ended up with 11 coupons and a copy of a 5 dollar valve game. (Day of Defeat: Source) Of those coupons, seven of them are for valve titles. And none of the coupons apply to future valve releases. And I have every valve game that costs more than 20 dollars.

 ::(:

Anybody want a 50% off valve games coupon?

Edit: Combing through the steam coupons faq: Any coupons you have will apply to items already discounted. So there's that at least. If you got any coupons for anything good, save them for the next time those things go on sale! They all become active on the 2nd.

Battlefield's focus is on large playercounts and huge battlefields, both of which make the game into a clusterfuck of awful for me. I prefer close quarters and the COD games are pretty much the quake of 'realistic' shooters in that they're fast paced close quarters romps compared to the other games in the genre which focus on shit like tactics and battlefield strategy. I actually liked the new goldeneye's multiplayer. That's the kind of shooter player I am.

If nobody has a coupon that's cool but you guys being hipster about what games this community's members are allowed to enjoy is really rubbing me the wrong way.

I don't have any coupons but I'll throw my 2 cents in. If you like COD's style that's fine, but black ops is widely considered to be bad by cod players that I've seen. I didn't have too big a problem with it, except that every server is 24/7 nuketown because you can literally get kills by standing where you spawn and chucking grenades halfway across the map and that's how people powerlevel. Also the game is probably dead/dying/bleeding heavily now that MW3 is out.

Also for what it's worth gamestop sells dvd-roms of black ops that activate on steam for $50 or at least the gamestop near me does. If you happen to have gift cards or there's a sale or something that might be an option if you can't find a coupon.

10am is when Steam's "day" starts. So any weekend specials/daily sales end there and the newest batch comes up. (See: Winter/Summer sales)

Steam itself is always a little slow and glitchy when updating this, resulting in incongruities like the games that were on sale during the weekend appearing on sale for 0% off for a few minutes.

Dark Forces 2 was cool back in the day, but it is suffering from no music in the steam version. You can find it on the steam forums though. It's great just for the silly live action cutscenes. Otherwise I think the game is mostly nostalgia. Hell, the whole series is nostalgia, judging from reading a thread about this very topic elsewhere.

If you make excuses for releasing a shitty, unpolished product now and brush it off with resources, the world can collectively point to Grimrock as an example of how full of shit you are. Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Shinra on April 14, 2012, 04:18:20 PM
I managed to make it to the fourth level of the dungeon. Right before the end of the third floor, I was extremely low on antivenom, all my characters were low on hp, and I'd basically spent the last hour fighting spiders. Now, enemies don't respawn in this game, so I figure I'm safe and go to rest in a corner after sealing all the doors that lead further into the level. I get woken up with critical damage from a spider, they're fucking everywhere. Apparently at some point, maybe based on the time I'd been in the level, a secret door had slid open earlier in the complex and while my characters were taking a nap spiders had skittered through the maze and hunted me down. I killed the last spider with only my mage left, and only with a sliver of HP. After going back to res my party at the healing crystal, I do a once-over of all the rooms I'd been in and a 4x4 secret room had opened up. There's just an herb in this room but I figure there's gotta be more so I start looking over the walls. I find a switch, which opens up a hidden passage that leads to a secluded area on the next floor. At the end of the hallway is a gargoyle with an open mouth and text on the wall that says 'FEED ME'. There's two adjacent doors, one I can open with a pullchain and one that's sealed. So I go into the pullchain room and it's a maze made up of iron grates, filled with green slimes. They can attack through the grates, but I can't hit them, so I have to carefully plan my movements so I'm not getting pounded by slimes and lure them out one at a time because they hit really, really hard. I finally clear the room, find a huge green gem which I take back to the gargoyle and put in his mouth. Bam, secret treasure room, hidden behind on a secret floor behind a secret wall, hidden in a secret room that opened on a time delay.

The thing with Dustforce is that it has very, very precise controls and physics that are incredibly obtuse to get the hang of when it comes to the interactions between dashes and air dashes and slopes and whatnot.  I like it a whole lot but it's kinda daunting to play once you start trying to get good times.  Having built in replays so you can just watch anyone's leaderboard run and get a feel for what they did is an awesome learning tool though.

Dustforce encourages keeping your momentum. This plays into that Sonic thing Geo mentioned above.

Speedruns are a thing in SMB too, I guess, but to me the game felt more about not getting splattered than Dustforce. (Definitely ran into a SMB-ish level in Dustforce, though. Go east of the server room area, there's some broken pipe that goes up to a red-locked door. That level...fuck. The idea that someone went through it in 45s, without dying, is horrifying.)

Caveat: I didn't finish SMB and has only started on Dustforce, so I may be talking entirely out of my ass.

Mount & Blade is 75% off and if you can get past the crusty exterior you will probably sink about 80+ hours into the game. I wouldn't buy the whole collection - Mount & Blade is the unfinished indie game that everybody may remember, and Fire and Sword is steeped in lore that non-poles (all of us) would not be able to understand, and gameplay mechanics that are frankly pretty terrible. Warband is 5 bucks and is amazing, it's the original game + new races/units/female lords (which are mechanically somewhat different)/etc and is incredibly deep. I think you could do way worse with your money as far as steam sales go.

Grimrock just went on sale again. If you haven't bought it yet and enjoyed games like a Bard's Tale, Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry, or the Gold Box games you will definitely get mileage out of Grimrock. additionally, there is a map editor coming out soon, so replayability!

Games like this really need to be a success. The old-school dungeon crawl is a dying genre in the US, and Grimrock is a great example of how good these games can be with modern engines and gameplay elements.

I got:

Batman: Arkham City (awesome!)
Blades of Time (not tried yet, prequel X-Blades sucks hard but had enough potential to make me curious about the follow-up)
Dark Souls (not on sale, I just happened to notice the preorders were open)
Evochron Mercenary (done tutorial only; I figure I'll be in the mood for what it is sooner or later)
Legend of Grimrock (awesome!)
Ninja Blade (so bad it's good, don't buy it for more than 5 dollars but I'd recommend it for less)
Prince of Persia: The One Without A Subtitle (not tried yet)
Sequence (pretty good)
Yar's Revenge (meh, I like a rail shooter but this one is astonishingly basic, and the use of the license is an ill-thought-out cash grab)
Ys: The Oath in Felghana (awesome!)
Ys Origin (not tried yet)

I think I've managed to restrain myself to stuff I'll actually play this time, so yeah, this was a good one.
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Bal on July 23, 2012, 08:29:58 AM
Hard Reset (Great but short)
Metro: 2033 (Great, scary, slightly short)
Driver: San Francisco (haven't played it yet)
Splinter Cell: Conviction (Haven't tried it yet)
Trine 2 (Haven't tried it yet)

Man, I had to hold back my arm like Dr. Strangelove to get that list that short.

I got the DLC that I  didn't have for Dungeon Defenders and passed out a lot of gift copies of Binding of Isaac/Wrath of the Lamb. I can't even rightly play Dungeon Defenders because all of my money is tied up and I can't buy a decent computer for a couple of weeks.

Oh well. I only spent like $20 altogether on this sale, give or take. Kind of proud of myself I suppose.

Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: Beat Bandit on July 23, 2012, 04:27:30 PM
Disappointingly this is what I consider a steam sale with little waste.

Arkham City
Binding of Isaac + DLC
Dungeons of Dredmor DLC
E.Y.E
Fable III
Hard Reset
Just Cause 2
Mafia II
Psychonauts
Sequence
Force Unleashed Pack
Vampire - Bloodlines
Ys Origin

Beat:

Fable III
Force Unleashed I

Haven't Played:

Hard Reset
Ys Origin

Considering I have at least a handful of games from when Steam first starting doing sales I have basically no intention of ever touching I'm happy with this.

Ys Origin, Sam & Max Seasons 1-3, Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate, Just Cause 2 + All DLC, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and The Final Hours of Portal 2.  Also BONUS ROUND Green Man Gaming dropped The Last Remnant to $3 w/coupon today, which is hilarious and a little weird after I've spent the whole Steam Sale clamoring for a special discount on this one weird JRPG.  Either the Brits have been tracking me specifically or I wasn't the only person doing it.

Quantum Conundrum is pretty much what happens when you give Portal's designer a hundred thousand dollars to change teams but forget to hire off the writers as well.

Not to mention the playtesters.  Some of those puzzles reach such a level of finickiness that they'd probably have been rejected from Portal, or at least retooled.

I only had issues with stacks of more than 5 blocks, but I've heard it's dependent on how good your processor is.

Regarding Fortune Summoners, would someone please tell Carpe Fulgur LizSoft that quests where you have to go back to the same place three times, each time after triggering a single event in the entire vast world, are not good game design?

Tiny & Big is pretty good. It could have more design space (I kept wanting to use my rope to tow myself up or pull things around corners) but is very polished and holds together well. I had more fun sending rocks rocketing around than throwing fluffy safes, at least.

Carpe Fulgur couldn't do much about it; apparently the licensing agreement is so strict they couldn't get the full voice acting from the latest incarnation of the original, much less start changing the gameplay. In this case you'd want to have a word with LizSoft.

That said I enjoyed the fighting in FS so much that I didn't mind the backtracking at all, though clearly mileage will vary.

Doh, just realized 1. Carpe Fulgur is the localizer not the developer and 2. FS is not by the same company that made Recettear after all. HOW MANY JAPANESE COMPANIES COULD BE MAKING RPGS WITH IMPROBABLY AGED MOE PROTAGONISTS SURELY NOT MORE THAN ONE ZARA YOU TARD.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has a similar deal but for a while their marketing had fucked it up. They said when the game was being advertised that it would have a "subscription" component, which made a lot of people say "what the fuck are you talking about Activision" but ultimately the subscription was just a Season Pass + some social network thing that nobody on the planet gives a single fuck about.

I can honestly say the only game I've purchased and haven't played is Mount & Blade. I've received a couple more games as gifts or for free (Portal, Humble Indie Bundle #1, Evil Genius), but I never actually intended to play them (though I might at some point if bored and curious).

I've even stopped buying MTG cards unless I pretty damned certain I'm going to use in a deck at some point (though that's still a pretty fair amount of cards).

Just don't ask me how many unpainted minis I have that I'm not planning to use (well, even that's not THAT bad... it's maybe around 40+, and I'll probably wind up selling some at some point).

So it works out that I don't have too much "idle money" in any of my hobbies. Of course, collectively, it's another story...

So apparently Steam's got a new frontend called Big Picture (http://store.steampowered.com/sale/big_picture_release?snr=1_4_4__118), designed for TV's.  I've already got XBMC for that but it sure looks nice, and a lot less fiddly than XBMC's ROM Collection Browser plugin.

AT ANY RATE, there's a sale on "controller-friendly games".  Sonic Generations is marked down yet again, and so is the Casino Night DLC, which is currently going for 39 cents.

Okay, fine, for 39 cents I will buy some DLC.

It still amuses me to no end that Monkey Island Special Edition is in that mix.  Yes, all that means is that it has full controller support even through installation, but considering how many games that were actually made for controllers don't it implies a weird level of technical dedication.

Torchlight 2 is a lot of fun for ten bucks. It feels like Diablo without a lot of the stat / enhancement clutter.

It sticks with the DII style of skill gains but feels like there's more than one or two correct answers for each class.

Half the fun in that game comes from making builds that by all means should never work in a million years but actually kind of do. In fact, for one of the classes (outlander), doing the obvious basic "default" thing might be the single worst option.

Considering the stuff I've soloed veteran with, I'm left to wonder what kind of wackity ass build wouldn't be able to beat the game, given proper execution. Unless you're purposefully gimping yourself by investing a ton in strength but using skills that don't base off weapon damage or something ridiculous like that.

Looks like Ys I+II Chronicles is coming to Steam.  If it's "Chronicles" then it probably has that ridiculous "everything on heavy guitar" soundtrack, but it's still an option if you want to play Ys proper and refuse to get the VC version like I've suggested.

EDIT:
Quote
* Soundtrack selectable from among the original 80s FM-synth, an early 2000s MIDI-style remix or a modern studio performance by Falcom’s in-house rock band.
  * Character art selectable from 90s-style portraits or more modern anime designs.

Shut the fuck up and take my money.

Ys had alway been one of those series I didn't pay any attention to, until I got Origins and Oath in Felghana during a Steam sale. Now this just makes me hope more remakes will be coming to PC in chronological order. I don't dig the games' tendency to be all, one level's worth of grinding is the difference between having a reasonable chance at killing a boss and "everything you do does 1 damage and the boss can two-shot you lol", but overall it is still good times.

Also I found out that "90s style character portraits" just means the ones they've been using since Eternal.  The new Chronicles ones look about the same except everyone now has special eyes.  Including Zalem.

Weekend deals:

Steam proper has

Mark of the Ninja for $5 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/214560/) which I did and so should you.
War of the Roses for $5 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/230940/) and fuck that game and everyone who made it. Pretty sure it's still a broken mess but even if not just save the money for Chivalry if you're interested.
Cave Story for $2.50 for today (http://store.steampowered.com/app/200900/) but you probably already have it if you would want it.

Green Man has:

Last Remnant for $3.75 (http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/us/en/pc/games/rpgs/last-remnant/) and I honestly can't tell if even that is worth it. Is any aspect of that game actually fun? It seems like one big grind from everything I've read and watched.

If we are going to bring up issues that were already fixed,  oh hey guys Steam opens my computer up to hackers! Huh. I was curious myself so I looked around. The game downloads at playgreenhouse.com (http://www.playgreenhouse.com/) are still up, but if I hadn't kept my e-mail receipts I'd have no clue where to find my codes either. (I guess it's not worth asking but, for the form, I assume you didn't keep those?) The twitter link on that page leads to mention of a support@playgreenhouse.com specifically for lost codes, but that was almost three years ago. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest sending a tweet to @pa_megacorp (https://twitter.com/PA_Megacorp); I can't seem to find you on there though, so if you don't wanna mess with that I can send one for you if you like.

Or you could try merch@penny-arcade.com yourself, though I assume that's one busy-ass inbox.

Yeah, the sale has been crashing the prices of any games you'd already own with cards. The lowest I've seen has been 8 cents per card, and it can only go more downhill from there.

I expect any game worth playing will have it's cards go for a nickel at most when we're done. Shit like Zack Zero and The Dark will remain strong, because those games are so awful they hoped cards would make people buy the game (It did not work)

Whoa hey, thanks for the heads-up, I was waiting for that.

Hmm... Do I...? Gah. I'm mildly annoyed that I'm only missing one piece of DLC now but I'm still not convinced to pay 1.24$ for Sunset Invasion.

It's not even a question of price. My dudes have enough history-based hardship on their hands already, they don't need need fictional Aztecs to come wreck their shit. (Not that they wouldn't return the favor several centuries later of course...)

Meanwhile, the Deep Silver bundle is probably going to make me feel even sillier for buying Dead Island.

Capcom Weekend (http://store.steampowered.com/sale/Capcom30Year?snr=1_4_4__118).

Should I just go ahead and spend the $2.50 on Bionic Commando?

What about $15 on Dead Rising 2?  (Keeping in mind that I still haven't finished the first one.  Not that I'm worried about missing important story elements or anything, just is the second one different enough to justify playing it when I've still got the first one to look forward to?)

Oh yeah, definitely. Do it. It's incredible. Heck, you mentioning it just now makes me want to replay it. It might be my Deus Ex.

EDIT: Oh wait, I'm talking about Rearmed, I didn't notice the newer one is also 2.50. I only saw that one LP'd and it looked average at best.

No, that's good!  I couldn't remember which one was the good one and the page inexplicably lists them both under the same release date.  (I guess that's Steam release date, not PC release date?)
Title: Re: Steam Deals
Post by: TA on October 12, 2013, 11:24:40 AM
They're both good, honestly.  Rearmed is a great enhanced remake, and Bionic Commando is a lot of fun.  Blow the $5, get both.

Yup. The games took a while to make it on Steam for some reason. I got Rearmed near release and had to resort to gamersgate.com at the time.

I said back then that as a remake, it deserved possibly the highest praise, in that it made the original obsolete. I still believe it.

"Dark Void Zero", a game which came out 2 years ago, is an NES-style retro thing, and is single-player, requires online activation seperate from steam and has securom

Arkham Asylum GOTY $5, Arkham City GOTY $7.50.  GFWL (http://store.steampowered.com/news/?appids=200260) and SecuROM (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=86410828) have been removed.

If you've already got the vanilla version of the games, you automatically get upgraded to GOTY...and lose all your save data.  Yay?

This puts the Steam versions of the games at 1/3 and 1/2 of what you'd pay for them on Xbox and PS3 right now.  So I'm pretty sure I've just been rewarded for dragging my feet on deciding whether and when to replace my Xbox 360 copy.

So if you haven't played either of these for whatever reason, now's the time.  They really are pretty excellent.

Naked Skyrim has gotten as low as $7.50 on PC I think, but only after Horse Armor Skyrim came out.

Yes, and Arkham City, a game which came out later, has a GOTY edition that sells for $14.50 when it's NOT on sale.

And if it were a matter of the DLC being more recent, more expansive, relevant in any way, then vanilla Skyrim would not itself currently cost $30.

My point is that Skyrim's price has defied gravity to an almost Nintendoian extent.

Naked Skyrim has gotten as low as $7.50 on PC I think, but only after Horse Armor Skyrim came out.

I don't doubt it's been $7.50 some places at some times, but $30 is the current price on Amazon.

We don't really have a general deals topic so: PS3 owners can get three free early PS1 games (Destruction Derby, Twisted Metal, and Warhawk - as far as Sony properties go, that's as "classic" as you get short of Jumping Flash) if they can put up with Playstation Home long enough to do the requisite 10-minute pixel hunt quest.  It's fairly worth it just for Warhawk imo.

(http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-confirms-legend-of-zelda-black-friday-3ds-xl-bundle-for-150/1100-6416417/)  I'm lucky enough to be stuck on a mountain in Prescott Valley on that day, so I won't at all be tempted to very definitely have my arm broken trying to get whatever tiny stock of this they have, but good luck to the rest of you.

(Does Legendary have anything in it that the Anthology doesn't?  I don't see any listed; Anthology says it's got Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.)
