Jack Vance.  I don't know his work but I know his name.

Once again, I'm embarrassed that my first reaction was "he was still alive?"

I just found out about this and had the same reaction.

Our taste in books doesn't usually overlap, but Dad gave me his copy of The Best of Jack Vance early in my teen years, and while I never sought out any of Vance's other work for some reason, I really loved that book.

Frank Lautenberg. He lived a full life but dying from pneumonia is a terrible way to go. Its basically drowning to death :(

:(

I saw the announcement a few weeks ago that he had little time left. I've read too few of his books, but have enough to know how much he'll be missed.

James Gandolfini, apparently. Only source I've seen so far is TMZ but the local news just reported it. :(

Kim Thompson, co-founder of Fantagraphics.

The guy was a titan.  If you've read a European comic translated into English in the past 30 years, you've got Thompson to thank either directly or indirectly.  There's also the matter of a little comic called Love and Rockets that his company published and continues to publish.

For a moment I thought "among many many others" wasn't referring to books.

Well, if you stick to his TV resume I think it still applies.

I think Caithness was reading it as "Richard Matheson, among many others."
