Title: New theme
Post by: Mothra on October 25, 2009, 12:17:40 AM
Starting in the next couple of days, I'm going to be drawing up mockups for new forum themes/community identities and posting them for reactions. We've got Bronto as a placeholder until I start getting these out the door, likely beginning Tuesday, then I'll get a voting box up in this bitch and we can get to some sort of consensus.

UNTIL THEN:

Did everyone else forget that these boards started as the Brontoforums?

My vote is for that to make a come-back, unless of course we could have... OBLIVITRON!

Original Resistance forums were blue, when Pyoko officially died, the WFE inherited pink, but B.R.O.N.T.O is always green.

Oh, good. I was going to make a Greasemonkey script that made these forums look good, but this idea is better.

Post by: Mothra on October 27, 2009, 04:47:05 PM
Alright, first theme:

Here's an idea of what the layout would look like (http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7892/futuremouselayout.jpg) if I wanted to go through the painstaking process of getting it all right before knowing if folks actually liked it.

The color options would all be neons, and it would switch whatever the primary color was (default would be pink) - I'll see what I can do about making different header colors for different color choices. I don't know if this is possible just yet.

Icons would be remade to match the style, though I'm not really sure what I'd replace the "new post" box-faces with. Probably a mouse sleeping and a mouse flying with a rainbow behind it, pixelized if I can make it work.

On all of these, tell me what you like and what you don't like. Like the name or theme but hate the look? Let me know and I can mix and match once I'm finished posting ideas. Everything can be easily tweaked, too, so don't be afraid to nitpick like motherfuckers.

Next up is a new Brontoforumus (Thursday? Probably?) Then a handful of others over the weekend.

Yeah, I like the look of this thing:

I suppose less solids down there and more repeating shapes.

For the record, I hate wasted space. I like everything small and relatively close without being cramped. You may want to take my future criticisms against empty space with a bit of salt.

I'd also like if we moved away from a color chooser (which is this theme specific) and toward one style being one way, another style being another way, etc., but if you're looking to rebrand WFE entirely I guess a color switcher makes some sense.

I kind of like it, though I can understand how someone would think it's eye searing. But man, sign me up for some Future Mouse.

Less eye-searing color (http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3064/futuremouseorange.jpg)

For the record, I hate wasted space. I like everything small and relatively close without being cramped.

Was shooting for "simple as hell", but there definitely a ton of black on this thing. Noted.

Less eye-searing color (http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3064/futuremouseorange.jpg)

That hurts far less. Not sure how I feel about the black background after years of white and pink.
Title: Re: New theme
Post by: yyler on October 27, 2009, 05:15:02 PM
You should either center the header or make one that stretches the full width. Also I liked it better with a color tint than without one.
Title: Re: New theme
Post by: Mothra on October 27, 2009, 05:22:40 PM
Agreed. Wasn't sure what the usual monitor resolution nowadays is, though. 900px images sound about right?
Title: Re: New theme
Post by: yyler on October 27, 2009, 05:24:22 PM
Never break 960px width. It's ideal, as you can divide it by a lot of numbers (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, etc) to easily turn it into a grid of almost any size.

Ever since we had the option to change colors, I've changed colors every month. It's October, so it's pink.
Title: Re: New theme
Post by: Mothra on October 27, 2009, 07:29:17 PM
So looks like people like Futuremouse concept well enough (I assume the picture too) but as a theme it's kind of sucking a D. I started adding some gradients and wireframe tiles, pushing it towards a Daft Punkish retro futurism (http://www.behance.net/Gallery/Triobelisk/110599). I think I have a better idea of where I ought to go with this now. I'll keep hacking away at at it and see if I can get something a bit more pleasing by the time we're through.

Bronto should be up either tomorrow night or Thurs, depending on what I have to do tomorrow at work.

I've been using that third color on the left.  The...grey-blue one.  I'm normally looking at everything else on a black ground with white text because I hate excessive brightness so...

It looks like you're going for a kind of terminal-style dark theme with Futuremouse.  Maybe we could get something that's more white-text-on-black and less half-and-half supercontrast white/black?
Title: Re: New theme
Post by: Rosencrantz on October 29, 2009, 08:16:03 PM
I would much rather have the dinosaur than the futuremouse. Is there a way to have your choice of image, much like how you can choose your color theme? I kind of miss the original WFE logo - it was pretty simple and straightforward. Reeeaally glad the Moxie guy is gone, though.

cyan stop gaying up my thread

Here's an idea of what the layout would look like (http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3149/bronto.jpg). I can't guarentee you everything will work exactly as planned until I get FTP access from Arc or whoever has that, but by all logic, if the forum layout works like I think it does, it should look like that.

The header image there is 900px, but there's ton of wasted space on my monitor. I'm going to see what I can do about just completing the back end of Bronto and curving his tail around, so that the image has no discernable "end." I also want to add a pterodactyl up there up but can't draw pterodactii.

The text colors would obviously be changed to something more visible, probably brown.

For the thread icons, I'm using the dinorun dinos. I was thinking maybe Frocto could send me better scans of his T-Rex sketches and I could make the sleeping dino as the inactive thread icon, and the stomping one as the new post icon.

Next up is sometime this weekend. I don't know about Saturday because I'm going to see Gwar's halloween show, maybe Sunday. WE'LL SEE.

I think the choice of white as a color for the Home/Search/Login text directly under the banner is a bad one when the sky is light blue. Blends right in.

I think the choice of white as a color for the Home/Search/Login text directly under the banner is a bad one when the sky is light blue. Blends right in.

I'll see if that can be changed. If it can, yeah, I'll be sure to match it up with whatever the background of the tool bar ends up being.

I like the new header image because now I'm not forced to scroll left and right on my android phone when surfing the site.

If it comes down to sprawling majesty verses usability on iPones, Max...

Then again, I'm not sure how many folks around here do that. I know Det sometimes posts from his phone. Maybe it's more than I think?

also, I tried setting up my scanner today, but it was being a cunt, so I'm going to use a different scanner, Kabbage. You will have to wait a few days for those pictures!

>:(

I like it, except for the tree banner thingy under the main logo.  I think a simpler design that doesn't clash with the background could work.  The blue sky looks really out of place.

Gonna try changing the blue sky to a red/orange sunset color and having it flow into the header. Not sure if it'll look any good, but I won't really be able to mess around with it until after work.

Some changes:

Changed the layout to flow a bit better (http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/3149/bronto.jpg). Made the color scheme more dusky.

I'll clean up the artifacts on the trees if folks like it, and again, I'll get Bronto's backside to come to an end if there's a finished product.

This is still happening, but um, I might have overestimated how much time I was going to have between work and my last semester at school. I'm working on the next theme and it's pretty much the best thing ever, but in the meantime, I'm going to get Bronto up in this bitch and leave it like that until we get to voting a ways down the road.

I'm going through all the busywork in setting up the theme file right now. No word from Arc, despite my mildly offensive text messege demanding he man the fuck up and give me the keys to FTP access >:(

Gonna try Sharkey directly, and then if that fails, we'll try hosting the file up on Kazz's webspace and see if that works. Probably Sunday hopefully?

In any event, I can assure you all that this transition will not go smoothly and that I will more than likely irreperably break something v. important. This is Kabbage's Promise.

The best solution for the retardedly large header (and I am in 1680x1050) is probably to find some way to split it in half so the volcano part is up top and the dinosaur is in/underneath the Hello XXXX you have 6 messages blah blah blah bar.

I thought SMF boards let users pick out a template they wanted to use.  I can't just pick and use the previous scheme if I want to?

Tell me you saved the previous scheme before you put this up Kabbage. :(

What mud lake? Other than the giant header image and the eeirily floating icons, surfing the forums right now is like wading through a yeti's cumshot in a blizzard.

It looks alright on my end (http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/6070/screenshotka.jpg), and Browsershots gives me it looking fine on everything but Firefox 2.0 (which the site gets blocked by, for being a spambot) and Chrome.

Can we just get rid of the ugly, brown mud lake altogether? It makes everything completely illegible. And Ugly.

Does yours look different than mine (http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/4537/screenshot2yl.jpg), or are you talking about the green hyperlink text for page numbers and such? That much will be tweaked, but as far as the message body goes, it looks fine to me.

So, we've got white background on Chrome and what else? I've got FireFox 3.5 and the things looks fine over here.

Title: Re: New theme
Post by: jsnlxndrlv on December 03, 2009, 11:00:30 AM
Cyan Prime is correct. Testing in chat determined that it's the color schemes that are to blame. If you had the default Red scheme, you should see the forum normally. If you had any of the other color schemes, you'll probably see the forums with a white background, regular blue and purple hyperlinks, etc. I'd been rotating color schemes every month, so I was using the rightmost bluish purple scheme.

Huh. I had mine on dull green, and I didn't have any problems.

It's possible we're wrong about which color was the default; I know it was red when we first started, but it may have changed during the last Bronto-theme update. I was just going by what drethelin said he remembered his color as being.

In any case, if you have the white background, you should be able to log out and see what the theme looks like ordinarily. Logging back in returns it to themeless, though, and I don't know how to reset your color scheme preference.
Title: Re: New theme
Post by: Mongrel on December 03, 2009, 11:29:14 AM
Dull green was the last default colour. That's the way it looked when you were logged out on the old version.

And yeah, most of us are seeing exactly what Cyan's screenshot displays and it's TERRIBLE.

The green text/brown background is pretty awful to read, so you may want to tweak both those shades a little.

Header image is still enormous on a good-sized monitor and absolute hell on a mobile device.

Ability to disable theme would be pretty awesome so I could ever check this at work again.

Pretty good start, though.

They're placeholders until I can figure out a way to get Frocto's drawings (http://brontoforum.us/index.php?topic=19.msg115039#msg115039) into vaguely attractive icons. 45x45 pixel dimensions limits what I can do, though.

SMF forums are actually fairly mobile friendly to begin with, unless the header has a huge image in it.  For some reason it tries to draw the whole page default width the same as that header, but all the content such as posts will fit just fine on the screen.

So yes, alternate theme would rock.  Not that the dinosaurs aren't neat, it's just some of us can't be hardcore dinosaur enthusiasts 24/7.

I don't know what the CSS looks like, but just add

Code: [Select]
text-shadow:0px 0px 1px #fff;
to whatever the link code looks like and it'll add a small glow. Maybe change the color. It basically takes away the sharpness of the letters.

Post by: Mothra on December 06, 2009, 09:56:43 AM
Okay, changed the link-text around so it should be more visible.

Could you make the orange links glow a little so they don't clash as badly?

I don't know what the CSS looks like, but just add

Code: [Select]
text-shadow:0px 0px 1px #fff;
to whatever the link code looks like and it'll add a small glow. Maybe change the color. It basically takes away the sharpness of the letters.

maybe ?????

Gave the text shadow a shot, but it looked pretty awful with a white glow, and a dark glow just make words look out-of-focus. Let me know if this is alright or not.

Perhaps you have never had a job job, but, as clearly stated by the post you quoted, anyone within 100 feet of your monitor will know you're not working if this theme is up.

I'm in agreement with what Rico said.  I'd like to be able to read the forums while on break without pretty colors drawing attention.

Yes, this is exactly what I was talking about.

Added the color change bar back, but right now, only the following colors change it back to Old And Crappy:

Trying to figure out how to change the values on the dropdown, then I could expand the colors out more. If anyone had any specific color requests, I could swap out one for the other.

The title image is going to be an issue, though. It gets called outside of each color's individual stylesheet, so I can't change it without changing all of the themes.

Is there some sort of image-blocking solution that might work maybe?

Fixed.

Any thoughts on making a small dino-style icon beside the color schemes; something small as a dino-eye to switch to the dino theme?  It was pretty rad for when reading at home.

Annoyingly enough, I can't change the color icons. I can change it to a dropdown menu, which might work, but I still haven't figured out how to alter the names of the color themes from the default. If I can do that, I can just have "Brontoforumus" at the top of the dropdown, and the rest below it.

Anyways if you want to change back to Bronto as it is, just click on any color that isn't silver, red, brown or blue.

It does look a lot better. Or maybe I got used to it. Either way I am fine now.

Right after the theme was working I downloaded the song and hosted it up on Kazz's webspace (where it now resides)

 :hi5:

Unfortunately I guess we don't have the thing necessary to embed a player in the newsbar. I can only link to the download of the file itself, which is geh. I will probably fix this when finals are over but I PROMISE NOTHING.

Also I wanted to do the same with Niku's sig in implanting a streaming MP3 of the following right above godzilla:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1A1Zp25dhg
(or better yet make it autoplay somehow when someone scrolls over it)

These are of course empty promises until such time as your minds are blown

If only there was some way to make the theme play only when Niku's sig is on screen, and then stop when it's not, so even glossing over it to read the next post results in a second-long DUNNUNAH DUNNUNAH DUNNUNAH DUNNUNAH DUNNUNAH DUNNUNAH DUNNUNAH DUNNUNAH and then back to Cannon talkin' bout vidgamez

Kabbage, I take back what I said earlier about not wanting music playing in the LP forum. I favour it being as hard to use as possible, soooo yes, if you have it open it should be blaring PARTY HARD at all times.

Also, flashing red and blue. If you flat out do not know how to do this stuff, I will just go ask terra.

I'm still planning on going with some kind of sweet Daft Punkish retro-80's-futurism (http://psdtutsarticles.s3.cdn.plus.org/interview_Sakke_Soini/7.jpg) thing with FutureMaüs and make it an alternative skin, but I have no idea when exactly I'm going to hunker down and get that done. I've got some other things I wanted to get out first, like Geo's game graphics and maybe some fiction alongside Eva.

It'll eventually get done, just not in the next few months. I've also got another sweet theme with a magic whale BUT LATER, LATER

Aside from the terrible text input, having to delete your cache every now and then, and a crawling load speed, viewing this forum on a PSP works better than I thought it would. With avatars and signatures off, anyway. Which is nice for when your pc won't boot.
