Make Your Own Magic Cards
« on: May 01, 2009, 11:24:28 PM »

It doesn't take much thought to come up with custom cards, but finding designs which at least seem both novel and balanced can be kind of a challenge.  I kind of enjoy it, and I kind of enjoy watching others do it, but I certainly wouldn't blame you for finding the whole idea vaguely wanky.

Got any custom designs of your own, ridiculous or otherwise?  Ever made proxies and actually tried them out?

My fondest memories of M:TG are of unglued games I played. I had the one you tear up and toss onto the field that I used and one that let me talk in a strange voice and summon at -2 mana. I also had half of the BFM, but I misremember if he was unglued or not.

Unglued was put out because the game itself was becoming too SERIOUS BUSINESS at the time, right?

....when's the third set (Unhinged being a fantastic follow-up) coming out

It was also a secret way for them to try out new abilities.

Actually, I hate the fact that they made Unglued. It marked a gradual decoupling of funny cards from the regular game. Now the game takes itself waaayyyy too seriously (partially a consequence of WotC's longtime desire to 'legitimize' the game) and the few jokes that exist are halfhearted and relatively minor.

By Golly, you're right! It also coincides with Phil Foglio's departure from the game.

I never thought Phil or Kaja were super-talented, but they were good at what they did. I always thought they had a (small) place in the game.

EDIT: Actually, my biggest grudge againt Un-sets is that it means that Mise will almost certainly never see print as a normal card, because that would actually be really cool... though in fairness they DID print a "real" version of The Cheese Stands Alone, so I guess you never know?

If the choice is between "Phil and Kaja make Girl Genius" and "Phil and Kaja make art for Magic", I know which one I'm picking.  (It's the same one Brent's picking.)

uh, mise would be totally unfair in real magic. There are a lot of cards nowadays that let you know or manipulate what the top card of your library is.

Also, lorwyn was pretty silly.

Signs point to there being no more un sets since now there is going to be a core set every year.

QQ I miss MTG.  :sadpanda:

Slight correction.

Also, I actually HAVE a Barren Glory deck. It works by the following method:

0 - Have Barren Glory in my deck.
1 - Get an Academy Rector in play.
2 - Play Kaervek's Spite (the sacrifice is part of the cost and therefore works even if the spell is countered).
3 - ???
4 - Profit!

I only ever designed one MTG ever. It was busted in half and wrong in so many ways... but totally cool.

Void Elemental
0
Legendary Elemental (Rare)

Void Elemental is colourless.
When Void Elemental comes into play, discard X cards from your hand and pay X life. If you do, put X +1/+1 counter on Void Elemental.
0: Regenerates.
0/0

It orginally grew out of a desire to make a 0/0 regenerates for 0 creature.

I have the apprentice data file for it still.  Sharkey had several of them on his website.

And this thread has weird timing.  Last week I started hammering out the Worst Set Ever, and this time it's compatible with magic workstation, which I think means we can play with images this time.

Hey Cait, Zara, if you want to help me flesh stuff out again like last time, I'm open to it.

Brentai wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwr
When Brentai comes into play, put nine pregnancy counters on target female, or quasi-female, creature. At the beginning of your upkeep, you may remove a pregnancy counter if you successfully make a real girl laugh using sexual innuendo. If there are zero pregnancy counters on target creature and Brentai is still in play, put a baby token in play. This is a 0/1 token that counts as a baby.

Brentai was actually the most annoying card in the PKO set.  1UU, Return Brentai to your hand: Return target creature to owner's hand. 1/1.
