Title: City of Heroes
Post by: McDohl on January 20, 2008, 10:45:11 PM
Crosspost from the HURRR boards so apologies.

For those of you who don't know, the Circle of Jerks have been doing a podcast off and on.  Last night, we recorded our latest episode.  Not to sound like I'm blowing my own horn, but it went over really well.

Here it is. (http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/80970)

I humbly request any former players of the game to send us suggestions, compliments, insults, and whatever else to our e-mail address at

Enjoy!

We've recorded a new episode, but it's not quite cut together yet.  It should be out before we podcast again, though.

In this episode, we talk about BAWWWWWWW, and why the CoH/CoV forums are filled with total  :hurr:

EDIT: Okay, it's up.  Jerk Radio (http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkCast.jsp?masterId=80970&cmd=tc)

We're recording Jerk Radio tonight.  Normally, I wouldn't post about us recording, but Sharkey's presence is more or less mandatory, seeing as the topic tonight is "The Task Forces of the Circle of Jerks".  Hopefully Skype doesn't shit out like it did last weekend.

New episode.

Still not the "If we were the devs" episode.  Sorry.

Jerk Radio (http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/80970)

I edited this one, so I apologize for it sounding awful.

EDIT: I s'pose I should say what's in this one.  It's basically us making fun of the wedding of Manticore and Sister Psyche.  We're two voices short because I started this to test my recording and editing software, and after PsEG started reading Positron and Manticore's lines in character, I resolved to make this an episode.

So, podcasts and fresher MMOs aside. Not that anyone plays CoH or CoV at all anymore, save for a few dozen of us recluses out there, but this weekend is a free "reactivation weekend." If you haven't played CoH in a while, you should come try it out. It's currently buggy as shit since they rushed the new issue out a few days ago, but still fucktons of fun, especially with the Jerks and Businessmen on Virtue actively grinding the shit out of new characters.

No, seriously, it's still fun. Plus, they smoothed out leveling a bit so it sucks less, and the last few issues have changed the game significantly with improvements.

If you're interested, the launcher client's here (http://ftp://client.coh.com/US/CohUpdater.zip). I'd offer trial accounts for those who haven't played, but apparently those have been stripped of their ability to do much of anything interesting thanks to real-money-trade spammer abuse.

I know about thread necromancy, but as I've said on the Worst Podcast Ever, City of Heroes has a new upcoming issue.  That statement is a lie.

IT'S ALREADY OUT.

The Mission Architect is a pretty intuitive piece of gear.  It actually stores your work in progress locally.  YOu have a limit to what you can upload for everyone to play, but if the developers stamp it with their seal of approval, then it becomes a permanent server-side arc that can be accessed, and frees up your allotted space.  Last night, I ran through several arcs, a few of which were created by the Jerks themselves.  Had a fuckton of fun.  A++++++++++++++++++ will play again

In case you needed more temptation to try what City of Heroes has become, all inactive accounts are (or should be by 11 a.m. EST) reactivated until the end of Sunday, May 3rd.

The mission architect alone is worth a quick look, if nothing else. You owe it to yourself to load up someone's shitty self-insertion arc that gives you 6 elite boss allies to take out another elite boss. A few of us still in the game have started a habit of "dumpster diving," or running through as many terrible story arcs as possible each night.

So while I dunno if I'll re-up or not, I did get a character from level 2 to level 16 in two missions.  It's nice of the Devs to let the MA be a backdoor to skipping all the non-travel-power bullshit.
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: McDohl on May 04, 2009, 03:31:14 AM
The usual lowbie tour on Hero-side used to be: Sewer team to level 6, go to King's Row, do radio missions, do the Atlas Park Safeguard mission, stop the bank robbery, and you get a jetpack.

Used somewhat frugally, this will last you until you get your actual travel power.

It's not so much that they're cracking down on perceived abuses that gets me, it's that they put something in the game that's specifically there to take out large groups of enemies and now they're all pissed off that players are using them to take out large groups of enemies.

In related news, it turns out WoW players with better equipment are more efficient at taking down enemies, so Blizzard is now banning people who use equipment.

It's not that, it's that they gave them a mission editor and players are making maps that are just "Push button, Receive billions of dead high-level mobs for profit"

Which makes sense that they wouldn't want that, but that's what I figured was the biggest problem with the idea of user-created Quest/Missions in the first place.  In fact I have no idea how they're going to even begin to enforce this considering the volume of missions created unless they plan to overhaul the whole thing so it's not possible to create exploitative missions.

Which they should've done to begin with, but eh.

Pretty much.

Could anyone who plays this game tell me why they're called "meow farms" though?
Title: Re: City of Heroes
Post by: TA on May 05, 2009, 02:37:58 PM
Apparently the people running them advertise by simply saying "meow" in a broadcast channel.  It's code.

Also, yeah.  Dogstar spends an entire week farming Mission Architect to get all his characters to max level, then goes and bitches to Kotaku when they take a hard line against them.  Way to be, there.

you should be a dev, apparently none of them figured on that whatsoever, from the way positron was posting. despite the fact that you know, the situations that mission editor sets up at base (automatically enforced minimum level making lowbies -5 to the regular leveled people, which causes the most xp gain) are like this perfect storm for powerleveling.

also, 'meow' was one of the tags that powerlevelers were putting on their missions so that they could be easily found. you got me.

also also, dogstar's thing is hilarious in a totally accidental way. ahh, that's our dogstar~

Anyone still playing this on Virtue? the lady and I are going to take up the game for at least the free trial this week to see if it can be a replacement group activity for WoW. Does Virtue have players? Is the playerbase blue side only, or is there a decent villain base? Is the COJ still around? etc

Yeah, the CoJ is around.  If you still IRC, check out the Espernet channel #urbanvigilante.

And yeah, pretty much the only two servers that have any amount of regular players are Freedom and Virtue.  Freedom is full of babbling cocktards, and Virtue is full of half-vampire succubi werewolves.

Post by: McDohl on March 16, 2011, 11:00:43 AM
So, this thread hasn't been posted on in over a year.

What's happened with City of Heroes?

Well, now there's something NEW for all you level 50 kids to fool around with: The Incarnate System.

Basically, it's an advancement system that is still being rolled out and tested.  However, the first tier of this system, the Alpha Slot (http://goingrogue.na.cityofheroes.com/en/game-info/incarnates/alpha-slot.html) has already been unlocked.

With the Alpha Slot, you select one of four primary attributes (Recharge, Damage, Accuracy, and Endurance Cost), and work on its progression by using Incarnate Shards, which are salvage items that will drop from any level 50 enemy.  When you load the Alpha Slot enhancement in to the slot, it will give you an across-the-board bonus of its type to all of your powers.  They recharge faster, or deal more damage.  Since this is an enhancement bonus, it is subject to the Enhancement Diversification penalties that have been in place for many years.  However, as you improve your Alpha slot enhancement, its bonus will grow, and a portion of that bonus will not be subject to the ED rules.  For example, the top-tier Musculature enhancement I'm seeking for my Blaster boosts the damage of all my powers by 45%.  2/3rds of that bonus is not subject to the ED rule, so by using that, I will have, at the very least, a 30% damage boost across the board.

Also, at a certain point, the Alpha Slots will also grant a Level Shift, which will increase your base stats for HP, base damage, and so forth, to an effective level of 51.  This will be reflected by the number 50 (+1) when targeting a player character.

This is all just the beginning of the Incarnate system.  Already, the next 4 slots are in beta, and they promise to be some really nifty things, including a summoned pet for any archetype, a new AoE blast, and much more.  I don't even know what all it is.  TA?  Care to elaborate on what else is coming?

Anyway, now's a great time to get back in to CoX if you were ever waffling on it.

Welp, unsurprisingly, CoH is shutting down (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=40798) by the time the year's out.  Pretty good run, really -- how many MMO's have made it 8 years?  There's WoW, FF11, the Everquests, Ultima Online...Galaxies shut down right around the 8-year mark...

And I guess there's Gemstone 4, if we want to open THAT can of worms.
Title: Re: City of Heroes

That's a shame. I always really enjoyed City of Heroes, but I never stayed subbed for the same reason I think a lot of people didn't. I always felt like the game didn't have enough variety and just didn't do a good enough job of setting late game goals. I'll be sad to see it go, though. I had a good four or five months playing it.

I'm a little surprised that going to free to play didn't save them, as it did for so many other MMOs. Maybe it was too late. :(

It is entirely surprisingly, actually.  The game was and is profitable, more than paying for itself in a time when NCSoft is posting losses from their Korean games.  There was a lot of new content in the works and on the test server, including major mechanics overhauls and a new powerset released last week.  Even the development team didn't know this was coming until the same day.  Shutting CoH down makes no sense.
