When asked by Lisa’s Atlanta-based attorney if she’d ever used the N-word, Paula responded, “Yes, of course,” and gave examples of times she used the offensive term.

In terms of telling racist jokes, Paula said, “It’s just what they are — they’re jokes…most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks…I can’t determine what offends another person.”

Gaming Discussion / Social Issues in Games

SINCE IT DOESN'T FIT ANYWHERE ELSE

I just sent an email to the Escapist Podcast people regarding... well...

Quote
Hi, podcast gang. I was listening to you last week and I felt compelled to respond to the discussion you had regarding the upcoming Tomb Raider game. I normally wouldn't do this, but I feel very strongly about the issues you raised and subsequently dismissed out of hand.

Susan seems to be forgetting that a game like Tomb Raider doesn't exist in a cultural vacuum. There are other forces at work here. Lara Croft has always existed as an idealized female written primarily for a male perspective. It's true that male characters experience violence. But historically, violence against males has not been sexualized the way violence against females have.

I'm nod "demanding that women be treated differently from men" as you guys put it in the podcast. In fact, I'd like to see women get better, more equal treatment. The trailer includes a moment where a bound Lara Croft is practically getting groped by one of the bad guys with the implication that he's going to have his way with her. Characters like Nathan Drake or Master Chief never have to worry about getting raped. Why should Lara Croft?

See, what I'm objecting to isn't the violence. I expect violence in games. Most women won't be trapped on an island and have to fight off wolves or drug-runners. Neither will most men! But 1 in 5 women in the USA will experience rape in their lifetime, compared to 1 in 71 men. That's what the CDC reported in their National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey in 2010. So if, like you say, women live with the threat of rape every day, WHY SHOULD THEY IN A VIDEOGAME? It doesn't make the game more "real", it's just exploiting a very real problem for the sake of titillation and controversy.

The fact that the game is written by a woman doesn't excuse the problem. Women can write bad, exploitative fiction about females just as well as men can. Stephanie Meyer's career is testament to that.

So why does Lara Croft need a scene where there's the threat of sexual assault? Furthermore, why does the trailer need to focus on THAT? There's a scene in Casino Royale where James Bond's testicles are whipped as torture. That never showed up in the trailer for Casino Royale, I'll tell you that much. I'm not saying that it SHOULD have, but why couldn't the producers of Tomb Raider focus on Lara-as-Agent rather than Lara-as-Victim, as they do for Bond? They could have done a very cool montage of Lara learning to survive, fighting off a pack of wolves with a hunting knife, and taking out the enemies guerrilla style. Instead they chose to focus on her vulnerability AS A WOMAN in the climax of the trailer. That speaks to me as symptomatic of a larger societal issue, one that we as consumers shouldn't dismiss.

Thank you for reading.

What do you think? How solid is my argument here?

Steam removes erotic game Seduce Me from Greenlight, citing vaguely-defined guidelines of "offensive content"

This baffles me. According to the preview video on the game's website, it's no more offensive than a late-night Cinemax flick. I dunno, maybe there's a QTE where a girl barfs up a bucketful of semen and you bash her skull in with a tent peg.

When did developers get so squeamish about nudity? I remember when you could get stacks of naughty shareware games alongside Commander Keen.

Let's play Rebus! The rules are simple. Use Google Image search to find pictures, use + and - to indicate parts of words to add or subtract. A good way to keep the answer from being too obvious is to rehost the pics on imgur, since it scrambles the filename. Try to include as few letters as possible. Hints are okay (e.g. number of words in the answer, subject), as is drawing on the picture to indicate points of interest. I'll start.

Thaddeus Boyd's Panel of Death / Penn State Scandal
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:19:53 PM »
Turns out there's a big sex abuse scandal going on at Penn State University. Jerry Sandusky, the assistant coach for the football team, has apparently been raping boys for the last couple decades (in some cases, through a camp he'd helped establish for troubled youth) and the administration has been turning a blind eye to the matter.

He's been arrested, but the fact that this has gone on for so long, is sickening.

Did you cats know that Wall Street is being protested? Things have gone pretty brutal, too.

This might not be in the appropriate thread, but one of the principal reasons the protest is going on is that the Banks are screwing people.

Ho-ho-ho! Ho-ho-ho! Ho-ho-hack-cough-wheeze-ahem

Now that Halloween is in the distant past, I feel that it's high time we get jolly. To that end, I'm going to steal clutch's idea and send out some Christmas cards!

Just send me a PM with your mailing address by Friday, November 29th and you too could have a hand-scrawled dollar-store Christmas card delivered right to your door. It is recommended that you include your original forum handle if you want non-generic Christmas tidings. If I'm feeling extra-festive, I might doodle something in/on your card!

Remember, the deadline is Friday, November 29th!

World's Most Scientific Institute / Actual Factual Moral Dilemma
« on: October 11, 2010, 10:22:01 AM »
Okay, here's what happened.

Earlier today, I was cleaning the kitchen 'cause I'm making some food for thanksgiving dinner. My roommate tends to be quite messy so there was plenty to tidy up. In amongst the neglected spices, dusty cookware and rotting vegetables, there was a $20 bill. My roommate is somewhat affluent. In fact I'd go so far as to say she's very affluent. She shops at lululemon ferchrissakes. She's also rather scatterbrained, hence the unkempt mess. I don't know if she even remembers it was there. Besides, I think that she would not miss $20.

For me, on the other hand, $20 could be my next six meals. I could just be rationalizing my desire to keep it though, since I do feel a bit ticked at the fact that she's letting food go to waste and once I found she'd thrown out one of my furshlugginer containers just because she couldn't bother to wash it out  :rage:

DC Universe Online Exclusive Who Do You Trust Trailer HD

So this. There are some screenshots and game footage floating around and it looks pretty good so far, even though it's still early beta. Apparently the character customization isn't as involved as Champions Online, but it will include stuff you can earn over time which will optionally change your look. There are Iconic armour sets for high-level characters in the JLA and Legion of Doom HQ. There are also Iconic powers which are drawn from the powersets of existing characters, e.g. Superman's heat vision. Mostly, your character's powers are drawn from certain elements/concepts. You have ice/fire (tank), sorcery/nature (healing), gadgets/mental (control) but each powerset can go DPS if needed. Quests are given out via communique from Oracle or Calculator so there's no running around.

Quote
>Major quest lines consist of a series of objectives that take you from place to place, culminating in a boss battle. According to the devs, these are supposed to be possible-but-challenging solo, and easier in groups.

>Then there are Wanted/Bounty quests which consist of a single open boss battle, which are specifically balanced for groups.

>And finally, there are Alerts, which would probably be my favorite if there were enough people for them in the current beta.
>From a gameplay mechanics standpoint, Alerts work like this: When you reach the minimum required level, you receive a notification about some emergency in progress. From there, you hit the Alerts menu and join a queue. Once there are enough people queued up (4 to 8 depending on the Alert), you are automatically sent to the quest area where you have to work together to solve whatever crisis has arisen.
>And you don't have any say in who you end up grouped with, it's first-come first-serve.
>So basically, it's like an impromptu team-up between first responders at a disaster site. Lots of potential for fun once there are enough people playing.

Most of this information is gleaned from /co/. I think it looks all right, as MMOs go. It's no WoW killer, but it still seems worth a gander.

World's Most Scientific Institute / Best Disney film of 199X
« on: September 07, 2010, 04:21:31 PM »
Something I thought about while I was out of internet. The '90s were the Disney Renaissance, and there were some great movies made by the studio during that time. But which is greatest* according to you?

The Rescuers Down Under: Somewhat underwhelming start to the decade. Probably because it's sandwiched between the two ur-examples of the Disney formula that was so successful. It's a good movie, but overlooked.

Beauty and the Beast: Plucky young woman wants more out of life, gets it. What more can you say? Whenever anyone says the phrase "Beauty and the Beast" these days, you get either this or Ron Perlman, it impacted culture that much.

Aladdin: Not exactly a diamond in the rough, but it is fun, if you ignore all the racially insensitive stereotypes. I betcha you can't read this in a voice other than Gilbert Gottfried's. Stole heavily from The Thief and the Cobbler, but since that movie still isn't finished, I'm willing to give it a pass.

The Lion King: Furry Hamlet gets nominated for an Academy Award. Ironically, this was the movie that Disney's B-team was working on. Their prestige picture was intended to be

Pocahontas: Did well enough in theatres, but these days there's no getting around the disrespect for aboriginal history it displayed, even though they made sure to get aboriginal actors to play the titular character and her people.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame: I've spoken on this before, but it really is a beautiful, tragic story of a guy getting friendzoned. It's right about here that zany sidekicks get irritating. Seriously. Watch the climactic battle scene and tell me you don't cringe every time the gargoyles do something cutesy. It did give us the best villain song since Night on Bald Mountain though.

Hercules: I have to admit I have a love/hate relationship with this film. On the one hand, I can appreciate the effort put into the art and music. On the other... a gospel choir? In a film about Greek Myth chopped to bits? I blame Sam Raimi. Thank goodness Hades steals every scene he's in.

Mulan: At this point the formula was getting stale, so they went with something different. It certainly paid off, considering its ranked as the #7 film grossing worldwide in '98. I just wish they didn't include the cute sidekicks. This movie could have stood on its own without Eddie Murphy. Otherwise, this is a solid contender. I mean, it gave us the catchiest Ear-Worm ever.

Mulan - i'll make a man out of you

Tarzan: A somewhat decent film. It was really the beginning of the end for Disney traditional animation, as after this, they were split into two camps: quirky films like Lilo & Stitch and The Emperor's New Groove, and under-appreciated gems like Atlantis and Treasure Planet. As for the film itself... It's pretty. It doesn't seem to have a theme to it like its antecedents. And Phil Collins as the star of the soundtrack? Myeh.

Fantasia 2000: Not as good as the first Fantasia, which is unfortunate. It's got a lot of charm to it, but some parts feel rushed. I have a feeling that the production team was too used to linear storytelling and visual presentation, when this was a project to be experimental. I did kind of get that with the Rhapsody in Blue segment, and the Firebird Suite was suitably fantastic. An above-average film THAT TOTALLY COUNTS. IT WAS TECHNICALLY RELEASED IN 1999.

*Not counting Pixar.
