Galuf: As well as can be expected. We should leave him be.
Bartz: The ship is just drifting with the current...
Galuf: Wonder where we'll end up?

That's touching, Lenna! And about as well-founded as Faris's previous encouragement that your dad is also alive out there somewhere. Ten gil says they're both supporting us from the afterlife by the end of the game.

As Galuf said, the ship is just moseying along slowly, without any control on the player's part.

Faris: The graveyard of the sea...
Lenna: A gathering place for ruined and scuttled ships... and a nest for the undead.
Galuf: Brrrrr. All the more reason to hotfoot it out of here!

The ship graveyard has a few hidden passages that require you to jump across rocks to get through. One of them is right at the beginning, and leads to a weapon upgrade for white mages.

The dungeon has the party run into and out of shipwrecks to proceed.

I'm kind of impressed you guys can hold your breath that long.

The ship graveyard is full of undead creatures and formless oozes. Nothing we can't deal with -- the Calcruthl slimes are weak enough that Lenna can take them all out with a single !Kick.

I looked up the mechanics for unarmed attacks. If someone has Barefist, or is a Monk with Barefist innate, their weapon attack power is treated as their level squared. Given my earlygame equipment, I can equip a knight with a Broad Sword with power 12, or a punch with power 12*12. Not a tough call!

It doesn't work for the Blue Mages in the back row, though. Goblin Punch uses the actual attack power of a fist, ignoring the Barefist boost -- and that punch power is set at 3. They're better off punching with swords, however much sense that makes.

Lenna: This room seems safe enough... Let's take a rest.

How do you even have dry clothes, you were underwater for several minutes! Do you have Ziploc backpacks or something?

Bartz starts a fire. The entire room is wooden, but I suppose the lumber is so thoroughly soaked with seawater there's no chance of the conflagration consuming the entire graveyard.

Faris: I'm fine like this...don't worry about me.
Galuf: Are you crazy, boy? You'll catch pneumonia in those wet things!

Bartz and Galuf leap away, shocked.

Prompting Lenna to run out of the next room, presumably half-dressed.

Galuf: Oh, my stars and comets! HE'S A SHE!
Faris: Well- maybe I am! You got a problem with it!?
Lenna: Of course not... Just, why were you trying to hide it?
Faris: When I was just a lad- er, lass, a pirate band took me in. I've been one of them ever since.
Bartz: Yeah, so?
Faris: Well, would YOU want to be the only girl on a ship full of pirates?
Bartz: ...Ah, right. Yeah.
Galuf: Haw! I knew from the start that you were too pretty to be a man! *whew...*

Not sure if want?

Conveniently, the room happens to have four beds, with mattresses that haven't rotted or become so infested with vermin as to be unusable, and reasonably clean sheets.

Galuf falls out of bed instead of standing up like a normal person.

Galuf: Bah... If you aren't gonna dress like a girl- and you should, a real shame to hide such assets- y'could at least talk like one...
Bartz: Heh... No point in trying to change her... Faris is who she is!
Lenna: That's for certain!

I'm still highly disappointed that he's made him a blue mage.

I did, it's what thad's quoting. I'm sure he'll fix it once he gets the berserker job.

Sadly Berserker is a useless class unless you want a physical freelancer but don't want the slightly more ABP for the higher monk base stat bonus.

Damned odd place to put it IMO

A dead end? (Uh, no pun intended, given the dungeon.)

Nah, the nearby chest is a switch that raises an entire ship out of the water. Who installed the mechanism to do that?

Dry land, at last!

Darkling! You broke my spell. I like that.

Siren: Still, I'm feeling generous... I could be convinced to spare yours if you ran home quietly.
Galuf: You think I would abandon these kids? Fat chance, missy!
Siren: Why would you risk your life for these people?
Galuf: Because... They're my friends! Don't be fooled by her trickery! Open your eyes!

Galuf then runs around slapping the souls back into people.

Music: Battle 2
There's a lot of low-quality rips of music from the SNES version on YouTube, but bafflingly few rips of the music from the Advance version.

Anyway, Siren casts a lot of magic. Including Drain, one she seems particularly fond of for thematic reasons.

This party is low on healing and high on attack power, though. We don't stop to recover, we just make sure we're the last to die!

I like how the subtle shading on her skin in the first form palette-swaps into oozing pustulant wounds in her undead form. The undead form is the opposite of Siren's living form, striking with  physical attacks rather than magic and vulnerable to magic rather than physical hits.

But she shifted too late.

A quick !Check revealed she had seven HP left. Goblin Punch did nine damage.

There's a reward if you win. I think it's a Bronze Shield if she's undead and a Bronze Helm if she's alive.

Don't make a habit of noble self-sacrifice, ya old fart!

We're back on the world map, without a ship. Not that the ship is at all useful anymore without wind to fill the sails or Syldra to haul it around. How do pirates survive if they're the only ones who can sail, though? Seems like there'd be a lot fewer other ships to plunder.

Lenna picks up Chakra from her studies as a monk. It's a crappy healing move, but it's the only one we've got.

Shortly thereafter, Galuf and Faris learn to cast Blue magic regardless of job. Now that's handy.. or will be, once I find some better blue magic.

There's not much going on in Carwen, but it's a place to stop, shop, and rest.

No, we're all here. The series doesn't get protagonists who are the dreams of ghosts from another dimension -- or whatever that was about -- for another five games.

Some other kid: The purple flowers on North Mountain are poisonous.

Geriatric: Fifty years ago, most of the wind drakes were killed in the war... The one in Tycoon is the only one left.

Pokemon trainer: Lizards and other hibernating animals can't stand ice-type attacks the cold!

Cartographer: The Kingdom of Walse is south of here, beyond the sea. They use a machine to amplify the power of the water crystal.
Lenna: We must stop it! How can we get to Walse?
Cartographer: Walse is across the ocean. It's a quick trip by ship, but since the wind slowed, there aren't any ships sailing...
Gafuf: Hrn... Haven't got Syldra, either.

Dude.

Most of the sailors at port mention that their ships aren't going anywhere because there's no wind. Bartz says this after every line, without ever reaching a conclusion. He's really dense.

Because the solution here is pretty obvious to anyone who can put basic clues together.

Because there is a thief in the party, their innate Find Passages allows me to see this hallway in the pub, plain as the clues that lead to our next goal. It leads to a back room with 1000 gil... what? You wouldn't even know it was there unless someone was a Thief!

GUYS WHAT DO I DO NEXT I DON'T KNOW

Heh.

Bartz takes a moment to practice on the piano again.

Lenna: What kind of dragon -- was it tamed? What did it look like?
Captain: Uhh, looked dragonlike... It was wearin' some sort of armor, as I recall... Could've been a real live wind drake!
Lenna: Hiryu! Father's wind drake is on North Mountain...? On North Mountain grows a plant called dragon grass. It is the only substance that can heal a wind drake's wounds... That means Hiryu must be hurt!
Galuf: Wind drake, huh? ...Say, Bartz. Since land and sea're out...

It's a mountain, and it's north of Corwen, Walse, and Tycoon. What did you expect?

The monsters here are stony, with high defense... but not so high that my barefisted brawlers can't brick break their way to victory.

Bartz continues on the path of a Thief.

As promised, there are purple flowers growing on North Mountain. Stepping on one poisons the entire party.

At the peak...

Looks like somebody found that helmet and set it up as bait.

The cliffside starts falling apart for no goddamn reason.

Bartz: Wait... You'd hunt a wind drake?
Magissa: Of course. Their horns fetch quite a high price on the black market, ohohohoho!

...if there's only one wind drake left, how is there a black market for wind drake parts?

Faris leaps the gap, the other side of the cliff collapses, she falls, gets taunted, climbs up, and throws a rope across for Bartz and Galuf. None of this setup makes much sense and the scene will never be referenced again, so I've no idea why it happens at all.

As an aside, though, Magissa refers to Faris as "he" in the event. She's still done up like a dude, and passes for one at a glance.

Magissa likes casting magic. She knows Fire, Thunder, Blizzard, Drain, and Aero, and casts them constantly. She's not immune to Silence, though, so she's not hard to shut down if you have a White Mage present.

Thanks to her pre-fight ambush, Lenna starts the fight poisoned.

Once she's up, vindication begins.

If you let the fight drag on, Magissa will call her husband Forza into the battle. Magissa switches to healing Forza, while Forza concentrates on smacking the party around. But this party's a whirling engine of unstoppable destruction, so she doesn't live long enough to make the summon.

As Magissa is a mage not immune to silence, Forza is a fighter not immune to confuse. You can baffle Forza into spousal abuse to make the battle that much easier, if you like.

The reward is Magissa's whip, an item that no job can equip.

And while there's no message telling you so, you get King Tycoon's Mythril Helm too.
