Voice: It seems Master Golbez has underestimated you.
Mars: The Lord of Wind, Barbariccia!
Barbariccia: You disappoint me, Mars. Submitting to a weak imbecile, despite all your powers.
Mars: I've simply come to my senses. I've grown sick of siding with animals like you!
Barbariccia: You snotty little wretch. I'll enjoy killing you all! With the old man and his Meteor gone, you stand no chance.
Mars: Let's see about that.

A gust of wind spirals around, gathering around the party...

Tornado, tornado, she's the lady who calls storms... almost naked.

Barbariccia hits with fierce physical attacks. Since Aero-Aerora-Aeroga aren't established series spells yet, she's fond of Ray and Tornado. Tornado we're familiar with, Ray causes slow petrification.

Her other trick is to summon a whirlwind around herself. In this form, the battering gusts knock away all physical attacks, giving her perfect evasion against swords, hammers, spears, claws, and arrows. Barbariccia then counters with Maelstrom, a party-wide Tornado spell that drops everyone to single-digit HP. Needless to say, that's a problem... but without a black mage in the party to blast her with magic, what can you do?

I've no idea why Mars has vanished from this screenshot, because she just hit Barbariccia with a leaping attack. While the tornado covers Barbariccia's body, her head is sticking up out of the top of the funnel cloud, so a decent Jump attack can hit her where she's not protected.

As TA points out, the Blood Lance is horribly inaccurate and misses even this crucial attack. I had just chalked it up to the tornado barrier making the attack miss even as Barbariccia is knocked out of it, because switching back to his starting equip also missed.

This knocks her out of the tornado form, allowing everyone to continue attacking.

Of course, keeping her from hitting so often is not a bad use of Friday's time.

It's a complex battle that puts you on the defensive for most of the fight -- recovering HP from Tornado or her physical hits, healing slow-petrify from Ray, and timing your attacks so as to not provoke a Maelstrom counter...

But eventually we are victorious.

Barbariccia: Regardless, you'll never leave here alive! Hahahaha!
Brent: It's collapsing!
Mars: Dammit!
Niku: That bastard!
Friday: Hold on to me!

As Barbariccia's deathtrap collapses the Tower of Zot, Friday warps everyone to safety.

Someday, Friday. Someday you'll realise that a crippling weakness to mind control is hot.

So... like...
I never saw Barbariccia/Valvalis's head and shoulders in these images...

I always thought it was... you know... A tazmanian devil type thing.
Tasmanian devil growls
No. Not a real one.
TAZ SPINNING

With her shoulder and head being big, distended eyes poking out from the spinning (fe)maelstrom.

Friday: Yes, it's your room in Baron.
Niku: Now that we've taken care of the fake king, there's nothing to worry about.
Mars: Brent, there is something I must tell you...
Niku: What is it?
Mars: It's about the Crystals.
Brent: Well, we've lost Troia's Earth Crystal to Golbez, which means he now holds all the Crystals.
Mars: Not quite. He only has four.
Friday: You mean there are more?
Niku: Of course! So the legends are true after all!
Mars: Yes... The Dark Crystals.
Niku: Alright, listen up. The Crystals of this world are called "Light Crystals". That means there's a whole other set of...
Brent: ...Dark Crystals?
Mars: Exactly. So you see, he only has half of the Crystals.

What a twist!

Mars: They lie under the surface of the earth... in the underworld.
Niku: Underground? Are you sure about this?
Mars: That's what I heard Golbez say. He also said that when all of the Crystals of light and darkness are gathered, the path of the moon will open.
Brent: A path to the moon?

No, of the moon. It could just be, like, shrouded in moonlight.

Mars: Here, you keep it.

Mars: This is to be used... somewhere, to open a path to the underworld.
Kabbage: But where?
Friday: Yes, where do we use it?
Mars: I wish I knew...
Niku: Ah, no worries! We'll just fly around the world on the Enterprise till we find something.
Brent: But we lost the airship near the Tower of Zot.
Niku: Pshaw! My baby's equipped with auto-pilot. I'll bet she's flown back already.

Well, that avoids a lengthy sidequest to get another airship.

Niku: Heh heh. Alright, we leave tomorrow morning. Let's rest up for our journey to the underworld!
Brent: I still don't understand. Why didn't Golbez finish me off at the tower?
Friday: Brent?
Brent: Oh, I was just thinking aloud. Come on, let's get some rest.

The castle is repopulated, but most of the guards and soldiers just stand around gawping about how the king was fake omg how could we never have realized that

Including the fake king himself, who appointed Golbez to command the Red Wings to fill... Golbez's own plan of collecting the Crystals.

Palom and Porom are still stuck in the hallway, but there's nothing that can be done for them.

He already keeps the servers running I guess we might as well.

Hey how about we go to that town where everyone's talking about dwarves and another world and magma and stuff

The Magma Stone goes into the well. It falls, and falls, and falls, and falls, and falls...

The mountain nearby is erupting!

Upon exiting the town, we find... oh my. That's the biggest gaping bottomless chasm I've seen since I met your mom.

Too bad someone pooched fixing Romo's name when they had the chance.

[spoiler]I do not actually know if R^2 could have fixed this "problem".

I'd played to after the Leviathan attack before I started posting. Edward was already out of the party before anyone had decided on a theme.

Might as well go in and poke around. (That's what she said.)

W-wait...

The airship is on cutscene autopilot, but Cid missed his turn. Instead of sticking to the landmass like he should have, he flew out over the magma. I don't remember that happening on my cart, so it must be an emulator issue. The next cutscene plays out the same way.

Mars: The Red Wings!

The Enterprise is caught in the crossfire between the Red Wings and... are those tanks?

Brent: Who are they fighting?
Niku: I'm gonna bust through the line! Hang on!

Flying straight through the middle of a cannon battle in progress goes exactly as well as expected. Several explosions rock the Enterprise.

As usual, the central protagonist is the last to wake up. You'd think Friday would have taken care of Brent first.

Niku: Yeah... But my ship... We have to land. It's too risky in this condition.
Brent: We have no choice. Let's take her down.

At least we managed to crash-land near this castle.

This would be a much bigger surprise if it weren't all but spelled out for you by every person in Agart. Dear Japan, you are bad at foreshadowing.

He sure does, little guy.

Urist McLookout: Golbez is evil! You don't look evil.

Urist McHallmonitor: "Lali-ho" is the dwarven greeting!

Urist McItemshop: Dwarven items hold magical powers! Humans can't handle them!

(The items for sale are the same as in the overworld.)

Hi, Luca. Shouldn't you be studying engineering for your role in the sequel?

Oh yeah, local music. Giott, King of Dwarves.

Brent: You are...?
King: I am King Giott, ruler of the underworld. State your business.
Brent: We've come in search of the Dark Crystals.
Giott: Ah, I see. You are like the others. But from what I have witnessed, I see you are not on their side.
Mars: Where are the Dark Crystals? Have they been taken?
Giott: They have stripped us of two. Now only two remain.
Kabbage: One step too late.
Giott: The castle's Crystal is still safe. Our tanks fought them off.
Friday: Yes, we saw your tanks battling the airships on our way here.
Giott: "Airships", you call them? The overworld creates many incredible wonders. Our tanks have taken quite a beating. Can you help us with your airship?
Niku: Honestly, we need to repair her first. The attack really busted her good.
Giott: We will do anything in our power to help you repair your airship.
Niku: Ahh, she won't last in the heat of this lava, anyway. I'll make temporary fixes for now, then fly back up to the surface and gather me some mythril to armor her better.
Brent: Niku!
Niku: Just button up and relax. I'll be back before you know it!

Giott: In the safest place in the castle... Hidden behind my throne.

The music cuts out.

Brent: Kabbage? What's wrong?
Kabbage: Someone is spying on us.
Giott: What?

Hop, boing, prance out of sight.

Kabbage: I wish it were so... but I definitely sense a presence.
Giott: Open the door!
Dwarf: Yes, sire!

Why do all the Crystal rooms look exactly the same, anyway? Even in the underworld. You'd think there'd be some sort of cultural divide that makes a difference.

Dancing Doll Calcobrena

The dolls begin a slow hopping, turning dance. It'd be more elaborate, but tiny early-90s
RPG sprites.

We love to LP...

The Brinas in front are pretty weak, falling to a single hit from... hell, even Friday can take one out with an Aim attack. The Calcos in back are a bit tougher.

Without more offensive power than I can bring to bear, the battle drags on a bit too long. The Calcos call for a transformation, into...

Boss music!

...Calcobrena, which hits as hard as you'd expect a colossus to.

That's not all, it can also Glance to cause confuse status, one of the most annoying ailments in RPG history.

If you take too long against Calcobrena, it will eventually wind down and split into three Calcos and three Brenas again. You have to start over, chump!

Calcobrena: Big bully!
Calcobrena: But now Golbez knows about this place!
Calcobrena: He's gonna getcha!
Calcobrena: Sir Golbez!

The Calcobrenas do a final pirouette, then vanish.

Golbez, Clad in Black, who knows about this place

Brent: Golbez!
Golbez: I commend you for finding your way to the underworld. To reward your efforts, I shall tell you why I am collecting the Crystals.

Mightly obliging of him, moving the plot along like that.

Golbez: ...to the moon. Legends say the moon possesses power beyond our comprehension. I need only one more Crystal to materialize my dream. You have been of great aid to my quest. Now prepare for my final reward!

Yeah, we got Golbez two of the eight crystals he couldn't get himself, not counting the one Brent fetched from Mysidia in the prologue. We're almost half to blame for the looming crisis... Uh, oopsie.

So anyway, the four overworld crystals are Fire, Water, Earth, and Wind. So what are the underworld crystals? Thunder, Ice, Darkness, and Holy? Poison? Gravity? Or are they boring old Dark Fire, Dark Water, Dark Earth, Dark Wind? The Crystals themselves don't do anyth--

Oh, right! Boss fight.
