A flaming skull is not a naturally occurring structure.  If you see one jutting out of the side of a mountain, assume someone is building in that mountain and move on.  Please do not excavate around there, cut down the trees and build a giant hole in the top of the mountain.

If I did get in on this, what should I build?

A version of Mother Russia, so long as it can be rendered in voxels less than 64 blocks high.

You can get more height if you dig out a foundation below sea level, of course.

Or, if you want to opt for a somewhat less dynamic pose to start with, you can't go wrong with a classic like the Rio de Janeiro "Christ The Redeemer". You can probably find some front- and side-view blueprints or schematics for it somewhere that you can overlay on a grid or whatever.

I saw Joxam post a location of the files in-game and got unreasonably curious about it, so I took the liberty of rendering a couple maps showing different angles:
(fair warning: those are raw-ass 10Mb 4500x4000 mofos)

http://zedpower.dreamhosters.com/images/MC/map5-obliqueangle-flipped-rotated-day.png

It's the same files as the last one, so there's nothing there that's not on the other, but it's neat to have another view.

There is a lot of untapped wilderness out there, including what looks to be a naturally occurring lavafall.

I'm not finding giant wooden towers on the map, are they near anything, or way out in wilderness?

It appears that the trick to tree farming is vertical space. I'm experimenting with sapling density now. Trees will grow just fine adjacent to other trees, though it appears that two or more open sides is advantageous, perhaps for lighting.

Preview of the new update on Notch's blog.

So all those torches out on the surface and underground are going to need to become lanterns.  Oh that's going to be a LONG replacement project...  If lanterns need iron, this is going to be some serious bullshit.

Rest of the patch seems interesting.

Wonder if there's some kind of find-and-replace that the server admin can run, to turn all the torches into lanterns.

when the patch comes out someone can take the map into an editor and do a block replace to make all torches lanterns(yes you can do this TA just not through the console). Or wait for some mods. I think we should keep the server relatively friendly, though it'd be neat if we could just keep monsters under sea level or osmething. We'll have to see what happens.

If lanterns require iron they'd better have a goddam 64 square radius.

I never really expected the current map to survive any major revisions, which is why I'm not big on doing these grand World Wonder construction projects.  I'm more into exploring labyrinths, finding crazy natural structures, and finding all the treasure (all of it).

Yeah!!!!!!!!

We're going to have to choose whether we want to switch the server to "survival" or keep it like it is now.  I'm gonna go out on a limb and say people won't want to be killed falling off their structures and then have creepers blow up their hard work.  I'm sure there will be a mode/server mod to keep things peaceful, but I'd also like to see a real "survival" server as well with all the new biomes and such.

My favorite theory on lanterns that I've seen: they will require fish oil that is acquired from the fish he will also be adding.  Fishing rods are already craftable, but useless at the moment.

Yeah I'd like to see both. real survival multiplayer sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't want the server to take such a drastic change in focus, expecially with how lopsided everything is (many of us have enough supplies to last us nearly forever)

Okay, apparently Notch has confirmed over IRC chat that all currently placed torches will be replaced with lanterns in the patch.

I can't seem to find a concrete source on this yet, so I'd wait before becoming too excited.
