Suggestion!

To contrast with the way Zanzibarland is all spread out and stuff, could this new map be one where we're expected/allowed to straight up build in each other's backyards, on top of, under, and side-by-side, basically? I'd like to see an organic tangle for a change, kind of making it so it's not just a bunch of projects that happen to be on the same map. I want to get lost in a man-made hive instead of wandering the wilderness in search of landmarks. Anyone else feel that?

Everyone involved in the new map would be okay with that. Our current structures are a little spread out but it is in easy walking distance of each other.

On another server I built a network of portals at every 50 blocks through the nether, linked by cobblestone walkways. Everywhere is effectively 8 times closer.

Or, you could do like Zara's old MUD idea, where the world is neatly divided into plots of land on streets, and everyone claims one or more plots as their own.

And now that all the major multiplayer bugs are worked out, how about stitching together the old maps as distant foreign provinces of the new map? You'll only need to keep one server, and people can set their spawn point to the old map if they want. Peaceful-mode carebears can take the item-spawning privilage and walk around in full diamond.

There don't seem to be any mods out there that actually make SMP more deadly, which is disappointing.

Is there a way for me to just get a local copy of bigshell? Even if we never build on it again, I'd just like to have it available, in all its shattered glory.

Oh that. I haven't slogged through it either, but it's basically a mod that allows for many more mechanical items. Mills, waterwheels, etc.

It's 28 minutes long because there is actually that much stuff in the mod:

Windmills, water mills, cauldrons for unattended cooking, electric grills, netherrack coal, wolf meat, band saws, elevators, item funnels on chests, item filters, wicker gratings, wicker mesh, hemp, rope, winches, wool, donuts as a stackable food, fertilizer, concrete, tanned leather, powered lighting, obsidian pressure plates that only activate when a human stands on them, vertical half-blocks for wall panelling, quarter-blocks for tinier work, and motion sensors.

This is the best argument ever for never fixing the infinite-item piston glitch.

There have been working modless minecart dispensers as long as there have been Dispenser blocks.  Because that's all it is, a dispenser wired to periodically send a minecart out onto tracks.  Still needs to be refilled.

Does that dispense a proper minecart or just the item?

There's no dispenser there. It uses a piston to push the cart out from a gigantic glassed-in stack.
