I want to try my hand at this, but I have no idea how to record voice and stuff going on in a window. What are some programs to use in conjunction with Dosbox and/or other windows?
-
We will only tell you if you do it in a skirt.
-
I (and Frocto, and more) use Camtasia. It's got a month trial and can record whatever area of the screen you set aside. Record in stereo mix, unmute your mic playback in your sound settings, you're good to go.

How is that different from Buge's usual attire?
-
And how would you know?
-
FRAPS works with DOSBox.
I, uh, might be posting some LPs of old Apogee games, if I decide it is worth it.
-
okay that fucking does it
Let's Play Let's Play Making Game should be up in a day or two
-
PROTIP: Practice a couple times before you try an LP that hinges on your unfamiliarity with the game.
-
The main contenders are Camtasia (30-day trial, $300 to buy, records any area of the screen, encodes on the fly) and FRAPS ($37 to buy, demo limited to 30 second recordings and applies a watermark, records any DirectX fullscreen or window). There's a free app called CamStudio (http://camstudio.org/) which I haven't tried.
Youtube won't take FRAPS files directly. Encode them first with VirtualDub (http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/). Open the AVI in VirtualDub, go to Video->Compression and select a codec, and then Save as AVI. Use Camtasia's codec if possible to create small files quickly without losing too much video quality.
If you can't get your setup to record from both sound and microphone at the same time, there's a workaround. Have FRAPS record game audio as normal, while recording from the microphone using Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). (You can even use two separate computers if necessary.) Combine the two later with Avisynth (http://avisynth.org/). Create a script like the one below, load it in VirtualDub, and save it as AVI:
# save this file as "merge.avs"
video = AviSource("game.avi").ResampleAudio(44100)
commentary = WavSource("audio.wav").ResampleAudio(44100)
commentary = MergeChannels(commentary.GetChannel(1), commentary.GetChannel(1))
audio = MixAudio(commentary, video, 0.75, 0.25)
return AudioDub(video, audio)
Assuming you start the audio recording first, you'll have to cut the start of the audio in Audacity to make it sync. It may help to give a countdown or make a beep, something you can sync up with starting the screen recorder (remember that you can edit the beep out itself once you have the sync correct).

CamStudio likes to crash and generate multiple-GB files so you're probably better off :yarr:

Wow
Thanks, Frocto! You are every bit the Foul-Mouthed Warrior Prince I envisioned.
Oh and :hi5: on the rapidshare.

I use Camstudio and it works just fine.

So easy, any idiot can do it!

I challenge someone to attempt a Lets Play of this terrible Amiga platform game. I wanted to do it myself but it'll be much funnier if you haven't played before and get killed by stuff and swear a lot.

okay I want to do this with my turbo grafx games but it seems impossible

McDohl and Brentai, can you guys please tell me what software you use in conjunction with your capture cards? I am trying to use this Showbiz 2 thing and it blows hard and leaves watermarks on the video.
-
VirtualDub.
If you've got your drivers installed then it should show up as a device in Video Capture mode (I honestly don't even know what the rest of VirtualDub even does) and then you can basically fuck around with your Video/Audio settings to taste (most device-specific ones will be under Video->Capture Filter). Currently I'm using it for TV capture and screen capture with Vladimir Hmelyoff's Screen Capture Driver (http://www.hmelyoff.com/index.php?section=4), in case you ever get tired of Camtasia's shit.

What WERE you expecting?

I believe we've already met that goal.

Oh yeah, this post, haha. It was in reference to this:

To Kabbage: I just tried using virtualdub to record something, and I got the same video problems that you were talking about. Maybe it is all virtualdub's fault for being so terrible.
-
I've had some success using Fast AVI Splitter to dice this up into a different format (DVD), which solves the krazy katloaf kolorz issue.
Unfortunately I think because of complications of my machine the entire Battletanx segment is LOST TO THE HEAVENS :(
-
ALSO
As a direct result of all the horseshit I've had to download onto my machine to get this semi-working my computer now has every VD known to man
It's been sitting there completely unusable in safe mode slogging through viruses and trojan's aplenty for a full day now while I use my laptop
The amount of suffering You Don't Suffer Enough has brought down on me is DISPROPORTIONATE TO MY CRIME (of being v. handsome)
-
Yeah, when I was trying to get LPing set up for the first time I had to do two (2) system restores.
-
Now I don't feel too bad about my ghetto setup, where I ran my computer's line-out into my mixer which then ran into my computer's line-in.
-
Now I feel bad that I've had no problems at all with audio recording after initial Frocto and Brentai aid and do absolutely nothing with it.
-
So wait what is the Best Way on a windows 7 with a USB headset, here?
-
Figure out if you can use stereo mix on your sound card, integrated or not. Then you have to have the sound going through some sort of device hooked to your sound card.
-

I remember having trouble getting audio from games to be recorded by FRAPS until I set it to accept Stereo Mix as an external input.
-
Oh hey, got it working.
Turns out if I go to the Headset Microphone there and set it to output to my Headset Earphones, like this:
And then set the Headset Earphones to be default output, so the game audio is coming through them like it's honestly better for it to do for this anyway, like this:
And FRAPS is recording the Stereo Mix as an external audio feed, like this:
Then both what I'm saying into the mic and the noises the game is making both show up in my FRAPS recording.

I found a nice video about getting tracks that are normally not allowed up on youtube. I tested the theory and it worked. :)
-
Okay Fraps doesn't work with emulators so I'm trying this Camtasia/Virtual Audio Cable thinger. But there's a problem.
Okay, this setup is a lot simpler, so I'm kind of proud of it. It doesn't require a microphone jack and can be done with a USB headset, just like the other. The problem with the other setup is that 1) it's overcomplicated and 2) it only works with programs that let you specify an audio output.
So, anyway, it uses stereo mix, but basically fools your computer into thinking your USB headset is a microphone jack. You turn the game on, make sure the sound is playing to your computer's speakers and NOT the headset, pipe Stereo Mix and the USB through to VAC1 and then make sure Camtasia or whatever you're using is recording that.
This is soooo much easier than the other setup and I can see myself using it a fair amount.
I have exactly this set up. Sound is coming out of the computer's speakers and not the headset, Audio Repeater is open in two instances just like you show and piping Stereo Mix and the Headset to VAC1 and I hit Start on both, and Camtasia is trying to record from VAC1. But it's not working. Camtasia recordings are coming up with no audio at all. The weird part is that it did work, then I tried to fuck with the levels for Stereo Mix because the game's audio was way louder than my voice, and now it's not working at all even though I think I reverted my changes. Do I need to have some specific setup with Default Devices and Default Communications Devices in the audio settings?
-
And I think I figured it out. The answer: Line 1 needs to be the Default Device in the Recording devices, not just in Camtasia itself.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwxZvoDylww
Yeah, ignore those.
-
Fraps works with emulators. I know for sure it works for no$gba and virtualboyadvance, and if you set zsnes to fullscreen... 640x800? i think, it works as well.
-
So, I was recording my videos as .mpg for the Alcatraz level, and the quality looked fine. Yesterday I recorded another video, and in my opinion it looks worse. I am wondering if this looks okay. I would just rerecord the video, but after you beat a level, you don't get the little talky bits after you get your stats. I would splice those parts into a new video, but somehow the resolution got turned down as well, so it would be all messed up.

Audacity crashed earlier and I lost 90 minutes of commentary. Can someone suggest a better commentary recording program?
-
90 minutes without taking a break to save?
-
Whether it was 90 minutes or 2 minutes, I still don't want a program that arbitrarily deletes my commentary you ape
-
Frocto have you found an alternative to Audacity yet? I just had the same problem as you did. Luckily I was able to recover my audio, but it's really fucking retarded how Audacity decides to crash whenever it feels like.
-
I have not. And you have my sympathy.
-
God damn why are all of the recommended "Good video editing" tools absolutely terrible to get working? I guess I am sticking with vegas for now.
-
Have there been any great strides forward in recording vidyagames for YouTubing in the last two years? I'd like to see about starting video or hybrid LPs but if everything in this thread is two years out of date I figure there may be better setup for it now.
-
There really hasn't been anything new for recording desktops. Especially if you are only recording older roms.
-
I think one of the NES/SNES emulators has a good recorded playthrough -> MPEG conversion utility, if you're looking for that.
