Honestly I think we all figured out more than we let on back in the eighties.  I mean I remember finding out the bomb thing in MM4 by accident, and most of Zelda I figured out myself except someone told me that I needed the Silver Arrow for Ganon, and I didn't ask.  Games back then were all about being bored and trying everything.

Now, Metroid 1, that shit was impossible.  Forget it.

DO YOU GUYS REMEMBER SECRET OF EVERMORE

SNIFF SNIFF

YOU FOUND 3 LIMESTONE
I always assumed SoE would actually be a lot better than I remember it if I just gave it another chance.

But, don't care.

Secret of Evermore was pretty awesome. I think most of the hate it gets stems from the fact that everyone was wanting Secret of Mana 2 or whatever, and when SoE failed to live up to that standard everyone tore it a new one. Of course, I hated Secret of Mana, which come to think of it might be why I had no bias going into SoE.

Not sure what this has to do with metroidvanias, though.

EDIT: Stupid page break.

Secret of Evermore has a lot of bullshittingly irritating parts.  Like how you have to grind levels with every version of every weapon, and the casting system was retarded.

The version I had was bugged, I think, so that Cryo rounds from the Bazooka never actually got used up when I shot them.  Which made the latter parts of the game a lot easier, particularly ... I remember insta-kill plants.  Fuck that.

It's a pretty okay game, but a very very flawed game.

But then again, it might be better that we never got SoM2, because I was one of those people that played with a whole two buddies (for a party of 3  ::D: !) and knowing that I'd have to kick one of them out was kind of lame.

Er, what are you talking about?  SD3 had three party members.  SoE had two.

...I don't THINK SoE was two-player, but I could be mistaken; it's been ages.

I think my main problem with it was map design.  I recall a couple of mazes that I got out of by accident (in particular one where you're a poodle) and couldn't figure out how I did it on a second playthrough.

...Someone needs to re-split here.

Second player controlled the dog.  He couldn't do much.

Nope, Wikipedia says single-player and a quick Google confirms that you have to patch the ROM to get 2-player.

See, I thought I remembered a friend wanting to play along like in SoM and not being able to; I was just wondering if I was mistaken.  Apparently I wasn't.

Hurk, weird.  I remember the big thing being HAVE YOUR FRIEND HELP YOU GATHER INGREDIENTS and thinking "Now who the hell would want to do that?"

10 years later Dawn of Mana came out and lol.

Anyway, it might have been an advertised feature that wasn't actually in game.  I wouldn't put that over Square NA.  It also might have been a hallucination on mine part, which I wouldn't put over my brain-worms.  ssssssssss

Er, what are you talking about?  SD3 had three party members.  SoE had two.

In yet another goddamn tragedy of the SNES era, Seiken Densetsu 3 only had 2-player mode.  No multitap support.  Third party member was just AI.

There is a patch floating around that fixes this on the ROM.

Clearly my memory is giving Squaresoft too much credit.

Probably isn't the first time.

Well, dog is man's best friend.  Even if he's controlled by a robot, it seems.

I remember insta-kill plants.  Fuck that.

The insta-kill plants were a puzzle.  If I remember correctly you needed to turn out the lights in that room in order to make them go dormant.

Expanding on what Det said, holding L or R (I think) would make the dog put his nose to the ground and automatically sniff towards any local ingredients.

Thanks to my interest in dicking around with technology and complete lack of attention span, I've now installed and messed with Cave Story on just about everything under the sun: Windows, Mac, Linux, and PSP.

It runs best on Win/Mac, but I think I'm actually going to play through the damn thing on PSP. It has a fair bit of ghosting on PSP, but my USB pad is shitty, clicky, unresponsive, old and belongs in a museum. I managed to beat Psychonauts with the sucker, but I think now that I've proved myself I can retire the blasted thing.

Wonder if there's a DS version yet...

Super Metroid vs. Zero Mission
« Reply #155 on: November 12, 2008, 12:33:41 AM »

Finally got around to playing Super Metroid.  Felt like Zero Mission with sloppier controls and the same "fucking unplayable without a walkthrough" problems as the original.  You can really tell which game's designers had 10 extra years to learn what was or was not a good idea.

I don't mean "what buttons do what".  I mean "shit doesn't fucking work".  Mostly involving jumping.  Space Jump, Wall Jump, turning into a ball mid-jump to get into a hole on a wall, these are all unjustifiably finicky.

I'm going to have to wonder how I beat Super Metroid without a guide when I was younger.
