Things in a wiki
« on: July 28, 2008, 07:39:11 AM »

Browsing completely random topics in wiki sometimes leads to interesting results.

Ghillie suits are awesome, but apparently are a fire hazard.
...leads to...
We have some ridiculously awesome snipers.
...leads to...
Russian women are to be both feared and respected!
...eventually leads to...
World War II era M3A1 submachine guns used even in gulf war by armor crews.

Unrelated.
I am so very happy my father didn't take the job opportunity in Guam, because there are giant crabs there.

The Giant Crabs are not Enemies, though.

Sometimes they're even the only ones that will buy your items at full market price.

Actually, Wiki-surfing led my Stalinist Russian friend to get me copies of some really good movies/series.

Stirlitz is basically Russia's equivilant of Chuck Norris (in the internet-joke sense) AND James Bond in one man.

This was a bit better as a "find a Wikipedia route from X subject to Y subject" game, IMO.

That game is fun, but it is a bit too easy to go general, general, general, to narrow, narrow, narrow.

Case in point... a route from an Australian radio station to an Algerian goalkeeper.

3WM -> Australia -> Europe -> Africa -> Algeria -> Oran -> ... shit that's a dead end.

but you get the idea.

It might be less about difficulty and more about interest in the path taken.

An adventure during today's lunch break:
Oranges!, a perfectly good, useful fruit that helps fight scurvy.  Navel oranges are conjoined twins...  Okay...  Bears no seeds so you cut off branches and graft them onto other trees.  For some god awful reason I keep imagining analogies to people instead of harmless fruit trees that couldn't possibly feel pain.

Okay.. Moving on.  What do we have here... Oh, blood oranges! Nifty.

Link to crusades, link to 3rd crusade..  Damn, nobody stuffed in a comment about -- oh there it is, nested in the comments. Somebody had to go and say "HEY THIS IS IN ASSASSINS CREED!"  Hah.

Somebody in the comments links to the good ol' black death.  Huh.. What's this.  Gene mutation CCR5 Delta 32?  Useful for hampering or potentially stopping HIV, but in turn makes you weak to West Nile?

Okay, this is awful, I started with harmless, tasty oranges and ended up at HIV and West Nile.  No, no.  West Nile known to infect
bats?  Holy crap, MEGABAT is a word!

One of the things they feed on is fruit juice.  Juice page has orange juice.  Orange juice leads back to orange.  And my lunchbreak is over.  Great.  Back to more ASP.NET work.
