Title: Let's Play Final Fantasy IX
Post by: McDohl on September 24, 2008, 06:09:27 PM
Looking back at some of the Yoshitaka Amano artwork for Final Fantasy IV, VI, and even IX, I realize now that Amano's artwork didn't really work for the medium of a video game.  Amano's artwork is good as a stand-alone, and as a baseline for the sprite artists and modelers to base around.

But this isn't about saying that Nomura is a screwy hack who shouldn't ever design clothing.  This is about fun!

This is about an epic tale of mortality, justice, and searching for your place in this great world.

The world of Gaia has had its own share of strife, based on some of the backstory the game comes with, what with all the wars that have plagued the Mist Continent.  In this world, airship travel is common and all that, which fills me with glee.

But anyway, let's get on with it!

Looks like someone decided that the best way to see the world was to set out across the ocean in a dinky little rowboat.  And to not check the weather report prior to leaving.

Aww, don't cry, honey.  At least you're not Yuna.  You're also in a pretty nice place right now.

Okay, gang.  What we got here is a frilly-shirt-wearing nancy boy with The Mayor-like wrist cuffs.  At least he isn't wearing crappy overalls with removable pant legs.

I'm gonna have to second DN.  Naming your Final Fantasy characters after a theme is the de facto way to go.

Goku, because if you're anything like me you'll make all the same jokes when
Trance or whatever that gameplay mechanic is called
comes up later on.

That's exactly why I feel Adam is a better choice.

Plus, the He-Man names sync up a lot better with the characters.

But you used a spoiler tag for that, so you didn't.

Aside from Vivi's being generally endearing and Garnet's well-rendered ass, I found FFIX kinda forgettable. I remember fighting a giant orb, running around an auction and/or opera house looking for playing cards or something... and a villain who was pretty hot.

Still, anything beats junctioning.

...right then!
I'm not quite keen about the name, but I'm sure it'll set up for some HIGH-LARIOUS jokes later on.
Now that Goku has identified himself to his unseen interrogator, the door opens, and out pops Generic Buddies #1, #2, and #3.
They wonder where "the boss" is, and suddenly!
OH GOD.  THEY GOT HIM.  THE DRAGONSPORES GOT HIM.
Final Fantasy IX introduces an interesting concept: monsters with multiple items.  Obviously, the bosses of the game hold the best stuff.  Thorough stealing will net you some really nice items for your point in the game.
See, I got this Mage Masher, a stronger weapon for Goku!
Oh, thank god!  I saved the boss from the Dragonspores...wait what?
...Only one conclusion can come from this.  Goku and his buddies are obviously Mr. Fabulous Gay Leader's harem.
Right...so that's what they call it these days...
...Oh, okay.  I got the wrong idea.  These cats want are kidnapping the princess?  Everything I know about RPGs is WRONG!
So, what's Goku's role in this whole thing?
Hmm...
Mahahaha.
Okay, got it.  He's obviously trying to camoflage his sexuality.
Anyway, the airship moors on the Alexandria Castle's lawn, which is witnessed by a particular boy.  He's particular for 2 reasons.  First, the camera centers on him.  Second...
He's a freakin' black mage.
Okay.  The title screen for reals.  NOW the game begins.
Black Mage Fall Down count: 1
A kind little girl helps the black mage up and gives him his ticket to the performance tonight back, and I take the opportunity to tweak the settings a little bit, speeding up battles, etc.  I switched the text boxes and stuff to blue to help make the text show up a little easier.
Final Fantasy IX features a shitton of items just laying about all over the place, signified by a thought bubble with a question mark or exlamation point hovering over the character's head.
Thanks, Grandma!
Black Mage Fall Down count: 2
(http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/kirinjimcdohl/002-18.png)
Jerk.
Anyway, let's go turn our ticket in to get in to the show!
What the...GOD DAMN IT.  It's a fake?  What the shit is that?
The ticket taker is nice, however, and gives Black Mage a few trading cards, drops the name 'Alleyway Jack', and sends him on his way.
Let's skip rope and be totally hetero!
Fuck.
What?
FUCK.  To hell with this noise.
Black Mage Fall Down count: 3
(http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/kirinjimcdohl/002-25.png)
Dante here decides to take off, and who should show up but...
...this jerk.  He taunts BM about the fact that he can't get in to the show with his phony ticket, then he drops a proposition.
...uh, what?  Well, this turns in to a "BUT THOU MUST!" scenario, so BM decides to play along.  His first assignment, a lookout.  Rat Boy steals Dante's ladder and dashes off down the alley.  Instead of being a dutiful servant, I tary for a bit, and run in to (gasp!) Alleyway Jack in an alley!  True to the ticket booth guy's word, he teaches me about Tetra Master, the card game played the world over!
(I lost my recording footage of this part, but I won, damn it.)
Anyway, since there isn't much else to do here, BM runs along and follows Rat Boy to a small chapel on a sidestreet of Alexandria.  Rat Boy orders Black Mage to go up the ladder, but a moogle falls on him! (Black Mage Fall Down count: 4)  Black Mage receives a quick primer about the Moogle saving system, and Mognet, the postal system that has completely failed so hard that they enlist BM's help.
Anyway, I save the game, and then go up the ladder and outside, where Rat Boy leads Black Mage across the rooftops.  Then, a thought occurs to Rat Boy.
Hm!
Alright.  YOU know what to do!

Since you guys couldn't make a decision...

You're one to talk, pal.  His name's Puck, by the way.
Right...anyway, the two kids dart across the rooftops, and Puck uses the ladder to get across and over the wall of the castle.  If this were an RPG of the modern day, then you'd probably have to do some stupid stealth minigame.  Thankfully, that's absent.
Solid Snake and Gray Fox they are not.  I'm suprised that the posh nobles don't sense the funk of street urchin coming off either of the kids.
Ah, looks like they made it just in time!
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH WHAT THE SWEET HELL IS THAT IS THAT MY NEXT BOSS ENCOUNTER?
Oh.  I guess that's the queen.  Good god, how is Princess McSadface alive?  By all rights, I'm sure after Queenie there squirted her out, she would think "MMMM DELICIOUS HAM"...but this isn't Friday, so...
Speaking of Princess McSadface, she's still McSadface.  Her Sadfaceness doesn't go unnoticed.
Good lord, that guy's wearing some SERIOUS eyeshadow.  Perhaps this is the emo git of the game?
...He smiled.  Never mind.
Yay!  The play begins!  Pretty fireworks!  Glee!  Rapture!  Fun!
Queenie's happy!
...Huh.  A hydraulic orchestra pit above the stage.  That must've set them back a penny or two.
You can't tell behind the whatever that's obscuring Gorku's face, but he's obviously enjoying himself too.
Even Captain !Emo's in the spirit!
Aww...she's not in the spirit...
Fabulous Gay Leader introduces the play, "I Want To Be Your Canary".  Apparently, this is the city's most popular play.  It must be damn good if it's running on the Alexandria equivalent of Broadway for God knows how long.  Apparently, like centuries or something.  Hell, even Cats and Rent didn't run more than a few decades.
...Apparently, they blew the budget on the hydraulic stage, and there wasn't any money left over for costumes.  The gang's all wearing their street clothing.  Even Fabulous Gay Leader, who probably just took his costume out of his personal closet.
Banter!  What follows is actually interesting.  The fight scene is carried out in an actual battle.  However, replacing everyone's Steal commands is SFX, which do interesting little things, but deal no damage.  It's a play, remember?
(http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/kirinjimcdohl/003-21.png)(http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/kirinjimcdohl/003-22.png)(http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr358/kirinjimcdohl/003-23.png)
Thrilling!  I'm captivated.  Eventually, our heroes vanquish King Fabulous Gay Leader and his two cronies.  Then, for absolutely no reason...
I don't get it.  Why would Goku and Blank (they don't have stage names.) start fighting inexplicably.  This isn't carried out in a normal fight scene, but in a button-pressing minigame.
The idea is to do it as fast and accurately as possible so it looks THRILLING.
Apparently, I wasn't too convincing...
Anyway, nuts to this.  Time to sneak in to the castle!
Two stolen sets of armor later, Goku and Blank are prepared for their infiltration mission!  Now, if this were a modern RPG, there'd be some stealth bullshit mini-game.  Thankfully, this is not the case, and it's not too far before Goku triggers the next event.  A white mage is running down the hall, and bumps in to Goku.  He puts the mack daddy moves on her.
Wait a second...what would a normal, run of the mill white mage be doing running around here?  It's gotta be the Princess!
Get 'er!
...Oh Jesus, it's the Recurring Sub-Bosses.  Anyway, they bumble about trying to tell the Queen about the Princess getting the hell out of Dodge.
That luscious bit of warrior woman is Beatrix, and she is the only reason this game was made.  Anyway, she informs the Queen about the princess.  She calls upon her...

Apologies to everyone, I fucked away the recording, and saved after I named him, so this is the best I can do.

Presenting Captain Adelbert Gronku, of the Alexandria Pluto Knights!  It should be stated that Alexandria is a total matriarchy, so much that there is a separate order of knights exclusively for men.  This order of knights being nine in number, including the Captain.  Also, these other eight knights are the biggest screwups imaginable.  Gronku calls a muster immediately to find the princess, and only two of them show up.  And these are the two who Goku and Blank beat up for armor.

Classy.
They need some serious lessons in military bearing.
Gronku searches the entire accessible castle, and the princess is nowhere to be found!
Ha ha ha.  Fat Fatty McFatterson can't handle a jog up several stories of castle tower.
We're sorry, Gronku.  Your princess is in another tower.
Huh.  She's smiling.  She was morose just a few minutes ago.

HOLY SHIT!  SHE JUMPED!

...Garnet did it better than Yuna.
...Is it just me or does Gronku REALLY remind you of Heavy?
Well, this certainly cheered her up.  Can't call her Princess Sadface anymore.  Goku bravely chases after her, and they both land on top of the orchestra pit.
...TELL me he doesn't remind you of Heavy.  Steiner gives chase, taking a cue from the other two!
...Uh...you're goin' the wrong way.  Unless there's a Sandvich over there.  I think that I should hunt down the Namingway card so I can rename him to Heavy.

Okay, kids.  I realize that the way I want to go about this is TOO FUCKING MUCH WORK.  I also realize that I want to actually play through this game myself.  Plus you guys suck at naming characters.

Yes it would. I hate you forever.

No seriously though. The other day there were two redneck teenagers at the Uhaul store screaming TF2 quotes at each other.

It's a FUN GAME. So is Portal. It's a rarity in this day and age to have such wonderful games. But people, please. Quoting it 24/7 is not a substitute for actual humor!

PORTAL HUMOR RAPED MY DOG

Well, realize that for the most part, the card game in FF9 was completely god damned random. It never told you in any useful detail how to win, so getting cards that are incredibly high level was the only reliable way to win.

And even then, sometimes the bits and bytes would randomly go "Nope, you lose this one"

Truthfully, the way I've seen it is to use cards with fewer arrows, because more arrows = more chances for your ass to get comboed.

Okay, issue: Are Tents bugged?

I just used a tent at a save point, and it restored NO ONE's HP, and a dead Quina didn't get resurrected by it.  I used a Phoenix Down on Quina and another tent, and Quina was only at 260/518 HP.

The only odd thing about tents in FF9 that I can remember is that you can use them in battle, which has a chance of a snake biting you and poisoning you. I used it on a boss once and it actually poisoned him, but I doubt that works often.
Title: Re: Let's Play Final Fantasy IX
Post by: jsnlxndrlv on October 21, 2008, 09:37:00 AM
Well, I know tents in 9 don't resurrect characters, and I'm pretty sure they only restore a set portion of HP to all characters.

Is it so miniscule that it only heals a certain number of HP?
