This winter has been straight up insane.

We'll get snow and cold, but we haven't gone longer than three weeks without hitting a run of days where the temperature goes up to 10°C or more and the fluctuations have been particularly nuts. The most dramatic instance has been the past two weeks, when the temperatures went from 5°C to -20°C, then back up to 14°C (yesterday) and now we've got a near-total whiteout and it's -4°C.

Yeah, these differentials are crazy.  We're still bouncing between 80's one week and freezing the next.

Since the late aughts I've been saying that the major change from global climate change isn't a general warming effect, it's that there are sharper, more violent weather patterns.

I don't know if that's actually TRUE.
But I feel like I could convince a lot of people.

Have you ever considered a career in talk radio?

Don't worry you can come to Wisconsin where all of the talk radio hosts are whiny as hell.

Speaking of weird weather, it thundersnowed here a few days ago. Thunderstorm with sleet and snow! Yay. I didn't even know that was possible.

Classic's right, though.

Princeton University researchers recently reported in the Journal of Climate that extremely sunny or cloudy days are more common than in the early 1980s, and that swings from thunderstorms to dry days rose considerably since the late 1990s.

[...]

The day-to-day variations also could affect what scientists can expect to see as Earth's climate changes, according to the researchers and other scientists familiar with the work. Constant fluctuations in severe conditions could alter how the atmosphere distributes heat and rainfall, as well as inhibit the ability of plants to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, possibly leading to higher levels of the greenhouse gas than currently accounted for.

Which is one more reason why all the nitwits saying "It's really cold!  That means there's no global warming!" are wrong.  Global warming means an increase in AVERAGE temperature, but it also comes with more extreme rain and snow.

Yeeeeep.  That was something.  It started the MOMENT I walked out the door with my suitcase, no shitting.

A little up further north there was actual snow, which is kind of a rarity in the heart of SoCal.  Which is clearly why I seemed to think it important to escape to the deepest, driest wastes of the Mojave.  The white water, it burns us.

...did we seriously not take any pictures last night?

Now THAT seems like all kinds of wasted opportunity.

I am not a shutterbug.

Damn near anybody is armed with a camera these days, though, so not much excuse.

Actually, I wasn't talking about the weather (despite the thread I posted that in); we had a big party at my house on Friday night and, near as I can tell, the only photos anyone took were of empty bottles.

Do earthquakes count as weather? We just had a decent-sized one. My first one since moving to San Diego! The building where I work wobbled like a giant jell-o mold.

Congratulations!
Both on experiencing a nice earthquake and being able to talk about it on the internet.
