If I played WoW, it would be a good excuse to blow off friends I didn't like.

^^^ this

The question isn't people blowing you off to do your dailies - nobody does their dailies anymore, and the few dailies people do do take 45 minutes and can be done while watching TV and not paying attention to your screen.

The question is whether those people would rather spend time with you, or spend time with their friends on WoW. You might not like the answer to that question, but thems the breaks.

I just hate WoW because it charges you to play a bad game, where the consolation is that you get to play said bad game with everyone on the internet.

That pretty much sounds like AIDS to me! Also it killed my old forum, but that was when Vanilla came out.

I try to stay out of WoW discussions, because I never have anything interesting to say and don't intend to ever play it, but when you give the thread a title like that, how can I resist linking this again?

YOU BROUGHT THIS UPON YOURSELVES

You've just crossed a dangerous threshold, Arthas.

It seems someone beat me to the point, but maybe I want to kill a dragon on the internet more than I want to do whatever boring ass shit you have planned.

Fact of the matter is though, on non-raid nights, I rarely spend more than an hour and a half on WoW in any given day, whereas yesterday I spent about twelve hours playing Bioshock 2. If I have unhealthy gaming habits, they're not in WoW.

I like how these posts sort-of imply that Brentai is bad company, rather than his friends are idiots.

Because, even if Brent is bad company (having never hung out with Brent, I can't say), those people are still retarded for using such a lame excuse as "I have to play a video game".

One of my wife's best friends dated a guy for almost a year who was addicted to WoW. For no good reason. He ignored her and was flat-out rude to her. He wouldn't come to bed because he was in the middle of playing WoW. His main character was female, and he would say stuff like "I can't go out tonight, my girl needs me". (One time when he said this, she had bought them both tickets to a play she really wanted to see.) When her grandmother died, she didn't even get a chance to ask him if he would come to the funeral because he flat-out refused to go. He lost his job at Gamestop because he would miss work or come in late constantly, because he would be playing WoW. Of course, he was a total douche even when it came to other things - the first time she came over to his house, he said that he was going to be watching Pirates 2... the porn movie, that is.

I'm not sure what this story has to do with WoW as a product.

p.s. brentai included in his original post that if you can play WoW responsibly (i.e. not like rosen's wife's ex-bf) then good for you

so basically we were done here in the very first post

Basically.  If you decide you'd rather play a video game than hang out with your friends, one of two things may come to mind:

1) The video game is more entertaining than your friends

2) You need to get new friends.

One of these is the thought process of an addict.

Or you just don't feel like doing what they're doing. The company of other people is not so inherently appealing that it will pull me away from something I find genuinely interesting. If my friends, as they often do, are offering something genuinely interesting to do, that's another story.

Then get new friends....?

The reason why psychological addictions are destructive is that they drown out the potential for new stimuli.  A consistent trend you'll see when interviewing drug users is "losing time".

I don't think not wanting to hang out one night is grounds for starting over.

There is a great quote from Leo on West Wing regarding alcoholism: "The problem is not that I want to have a drink.  it's that I want to have ten drinks."

Making new friends only implies abandoning your old ones if you're a psychopath.

The problem is not that he wants me to kill a boar. The problem is that he wants me to kill ten boars.
