There's no games I'm particularly interested in that have release dates right now, but I know they'll come, because it's Nintendo. On the other hand, my DS' shoulder buttons are fucked now, and I know that the price isn't going to drop before the games come out, because it's Nintendo. Verdict: I've already ordered mine.

If you need a new DS for some reason then yes you might as well buy a 3DS.

luckily you can just turn the migraines off and play the neat games

that they have not actually announced or made yet

Paper Mario? Mega Man Legends 3? MGS3? Animal Crossing? Those are some of the games I'm personally interested in, and plenty more have been announced.

I'm excited for Cave Story 3DS, Paper Mario, and Ocarina of Time. I'm getting it on launch day, however, so that I can play Pokémon. I traded my DSi without really thinking of how torturous 3 weeks without being able to play Pokémon is going to be.
It's obviously 3D, so I don't understand your concern.

On the other hand, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was great, so I don't understand your concern from that direction either.
The 3D Mario games have always been more exploratory games rather than Mario's trademark platforming, and given how much stuff in those screenshots is clearly meant to evoke classic 2D Mario I'm worried that it's going to be more like the Super Mario Sunshine FLUDD-less stages. Which is to say, 2D-style platforming in 3D space.

I hate those stages.

paper mario i'll give you.  we don't have anything even remotely resembling a time frame when we will see it, so i will enjoy it in 2012.

mml3 is being made without inafune, port, game i don't care about.

I know things can be a slow start and all, but the 3DS just screams of being released too damn early between the anemic launch and post-launch lineup and the fact that a lot of their shit literally is not ready, such as the online store.

Also playing old DS games on it gives you the choice between smaller screen real estate than on an actual DS or upscaling it to look terrible.  Which I mean, the former I don't really mind but it is something worth considering if you're picking it up just for older games right now.

Yeah, it's heartbreaking to think about how much MML3 is going to blow.

Wait a minute.

Over priced hardware. Crappy launch titles. Trying to encourage people to buy it via non game related features?

Oh, so it's not another Virtual Boy, it's Nintendo's PS3.

nintendo survived the n64 in more or less the same environment where the dreamcast murdered sega

they could survive an entire hardware generation by selling nothing but individually wrapped poops with random pokémon figurines inside

Saturn murdered SEGA.  Dreamcast was a sharp, sharp upward pull, but still too late to keep the plane from crashing into the ground.

I think the nature of the hardware means that a lot of early games are going to be constrained to running down corridors until the developers can be assured that free cameras won't give people motion sickness.  So yes, SM3DS is very likely to be just a series of no-FLUDD/Bowser world levels, and MML3 will probably not play a whole lot like its predecessors either.  As it turns out you can play something like an FPS in 3D without it being too disruptive (judging by the Killzone 3 demo) but I appreciate taking baby steps with the whole tiny-lenticular-screen thing.

Anyway I don't expect the 3D fad to really gain a huge foothold for games - it's not as easy to implement into a game as it is with a movie (oddly enough) and it's altogether too gimmicky to design around.  3DS is looking like it'll be a fine 3D movie player and 2D game handheld generation, with a few odd tech demos for games here and there.

The DS launch lineup sucked a lot more than the 3DS launch lineup, so there's really no point in hatin' on it right now.

Right, I forgot to mention that. The first game I liked for the DS was Dawn of Sorrow, which came out almost a year after the system's launch.

Sorry to spoil the Debby Downer's 3DS discussion, but SpaceChem is a pretty awesome puzzle game. Try the demo, since the demo is pretty much the tutorial and the beginner levels of the game.

the DS didn't make you barf, so... not really.

Nor, the thread was called "Nintendo announces sequel to Virtual Boy."
