The Witcher: Enhanced Edition released; patch is free.

I don't remember a lot of Witcher conversation here; anyone else play it?  I thought it was a damn decent game, though the "sex card" stuff suggested it was made by a bunch of 17-year-olds and, as a prequel to a series of books, it left some of its biggest mysteries unexplored.

I'm playing it right now actually. I've got it off Steam; I had never played the non-enhanced version before. And I'm having a good time so far, two chapters in. The story is decent, with choices that seem to actually matter and go beyond the "be a saint/be a dick" dichotomy you'd find in, say, a Bioware game. There are plenty of moral gray areas, in a way that I find refreshing, and that makes the more benign characters more effective.

I met this knight of a religious order in some sewers. We were hunting the same beast; he volunteered the kind of information you usually have to pay for, and then we joined forces. And all this time I'm thinking "wow, what a decent chap". We parted ways, and every time I run into him I'm actually glad to see him even if we don't interact much. He's not a shiny, formidable badass, or some sort of comic relief. He's just an honorable guy who killed a cockatrice with me and offered to help me out in the future if he could. And I give a crap about him! I'm not sure why, but it works. I guess there's a particular humanity to this setting.

As for the actual game, Yahtzee describes it as a single player MMORPG, a summary I find almost entirely without merit. There are a bunch of "bring me x ghoul testicles" quests, but they're painless in all regards. They fit the world and your character's job (professional monster hunter), and you're likely to accomplish them by accident while you're going about the main quest. Plus they're mostly optional, and the rewards are fair.

And the combat is fun anyway, so I like an excuse to kill stuff. It's a pleasant affair of preparation, position and timing.

I don't care much for the sex stuff, though it must be said it's not a detriment to the game unless you're opposed to the idea on principle. It's simply there, and comes down to an occasional "Bone her? y/n". It is kind of immature in some aspects (like the cards), but overall it's not like it's porn. It's almost a James Bond thing. You just happen to come across spectacularly easy women every once in a while, and doing the deed doesn't actually feel too out of place.

In point of fact, everything pretty much goes to hell and half the cast ends up pissed at you no matter WHAT calls you make.  Unless you stay neutral, in which case BOTH halves of the cast end up pissed at you.

Flipping the issue, I think it's stupid that the sex cards all got censored for the US release.  Yeah, the whole thing's spectacularly adolescent, and collecting a bunch of pictures of titties adds fuck-all to the experience of the game, but seriously, why the fuck do we even HAVE an M rating if people are still going to censor nudity?

So, um, Warriors Orochi 2 is out tomorrow, sequel to the Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors crossover.

The Monkey King is one of the new characters they're introducing.  How many people wanna bet that he's just a Hideyoshi Toyotomi palette swap?

Official site boasts over 90 playable characters.  :ohshi~:

...The Witcher Enhanced patch is a fucking travesty of a hack.  A two-hour install that gives you no visible indicator of progress, appears to hang even if it's working, actually DOES hang if you're trying to update the 64-bit version and didn't set Win95 compatibility, and HOSES YOUR INSTALLATION IRRECOVERABLY if you force-quit it partway through.

And if you uninstall the game, IT DELETES ALL YOUR SAVES TOO.  (Fortunately I'd already finished and would be starting over again anyway, but MY GOD.)

So, word of advice to anyone trying to upgrade the original version of The Witcher to the Enhanced Edition: fuck the patch, find a torrent of the full DVD.  Given CDProjekt's dedication to fair use, it's hard to believe they'd object to you doing that.

The ESA doesn't take their position into consideration when they C&D you. I would know, they C&D'd me when I tried The Witcher the first time around.

That Wario-YouTube ad is genius. That's why Nintendo makes the big bucks. Also moms, grammas, and little sisters.

Parish says it looks a hell of a lot better than it plays.

A pity.  Because I desperately want more gorgeous, high-res 2D games.

Warioland Shake's pretty good as far as I've played.  But, I've only played the first 4 stages or so.  Not awesome, but it's certainly par for a Wario game.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is awesome, however.  Since it's a port of a awesome game.

Looking at the film credits of J.K. Simmons (seeing as how he was the best part of Burn After Reading) I couldn't help but notice that he's playing the President in Red Alert 3.

So I looked at the cast list of Red Alert 3. Needless to say, I was pretty impressed by what I saw. ::D:
