But TSA Administrator John Pistole on Friday announced that all travelers will soon be able to join PreCheck – as long as they pay $85 for a five-year membership, ...

There are a few programs for expedited travel across international borders, like the joint US CBP/Canadian CBSA NEXUS setup.  I've got that, and in addition to letting me zip across the US/Canada border a lot faster, it also adds faster clearance back through US airports from any country, and even though it's not a TSA program it somehow adds in PreCheck access as part of the deal.

NEXUS costs $50 for five years.

The "native" name of the state of Idaho was probably made up as a fake, and was originally proposed for what became Colorado instead.

I suppose some pins could be shorted on the MB, but I can't think which ones; if power or reset were shorted then the computer wouldn't come on at all.

Could be the pin pair on the 20-/24-pin ATX power supply connector that actually turns the power supply on: the light grey wire to any ground wire.  That could be a fault in the PSU itself, and the easiest way to check would be to unplug that connector and see if the PSU still turns itself on when you plug it into the wall.  That won't catch a short on the motherboard, but that seems like a less likely failure to me.

I think I'm already sick of Christmas.

Well, that's no good.  We'd best play the same six Christmas carols on loop in every public space in the country for the next four weeks to bring you around.

[...] for the Bring Down The Sky DLC, while that's still done outside of Steam, it looks like it's now a simple code-free download.

The other ME1 DLC, Pinnacle Station, is terrible - just a "battle simulation" pack, no plot, no reason to pay money for it.  BDtS is free.

I think 1 might have some other sort of drm attached to it, but Steam's store doesn't list any.

The only thing I remember was needing to jump through some registration hoops for the Bring Down The Sky DLC, but while that's still done outside of Steam, it looks like it's now a simple code-free download.

I actually have no idea what other people are using these days.

Extremely informal research (read: a handful of online polls) suggests that the largest share of Windows users are split between Foobar and iTunes, followed by the Winamp old guard, and then Amarok, VLC, and even Windows Media Player (whyyyy) trailing well behind.

Another question: am I likely to need to buy a separate CPU cooler?  I've never had a problem with a stock fan on an Intel processor; is that something I should worry about if I keep it at stock speeds, or only if I decide to overclock it?

Stock fans are remarkably good these days.  Even with some modest overclocking, they can be fine; I've got one of the early, absurdly overclockable Sandy Bridge i5-2500K chips that I'm running at 4.0 GHz (rated speed 3.3) on the Intel fan alone, and the temperature stays sensible under any load.

One thing I discovered with that build was that my reused old case (Antec Solo) wasn't quite long enough for current graphics cards or some motherboards.  I have one unusable HDD bay because the end of my GTX560Ti protrudes into its space, and it wasn't the longest card on the market even when I bought it.  Shouldn't be a problem with a modern case, I hope, but worth eyeballing if you can find the dimensions easily.

Senate expense scandal now starts in with direct accusations against Harper.  Is this a thing that matters?  A fight over legislative travel expenses seems unlikely for easily-digested opposition campaign slogans, but then again, the U.K. had its own such scandal grow until it killed the careers of several MPs, all the way up to their equivalent of the Minster of Justice.

You know, we haven't seen a nice long Prenda post in a while.  Let's fix that.

Nothing exceptionally new, but lots of updates about how they're getting savaged in six (!) different federal district courts all at once, complete with loads of court orders filled with straight-faced snark.  Turns out federal judges are really, really good at writing that.

Sequester's still on and I'm not convinced the Tea Party's learned its lesson and won't pull this shit again the next time there's a budget vote

Sadly, that part isn't even in doubt:

“I’ll vote against it,” said Representative John C. Fleming, Republican of Louisiana, referring to the Senate plan. “But that will get us into Round 2. See, we’re going to start this all over again.

Fleming's one of the loudest and most uncooperative members of the TP contingent, admittedly, but it's not a promising sign.

I have an increasingly ludicrous stash of frequent-flier miles to burn, so as long as there's an airport somewhere in the vicinity, that could be a thing.

Keiji Inafune has brought a whole band of Mega Man people together to make what Capcom couldn't:

I was at the PAX announcement, and was wondering if we should just start throwing money at Inafune right there on stage.

The system-wide proxy should normally be set in the "http_proxy" environment variable, but:
  • way too many programs implement it their own Special Way
  • if you're using GNOME for your desktop, who the hell knows what madness it's up to for menu-launched programs
  • everything is terrible
The apt proxy is probably set in /etc/apt/apt.conf, and nothing else will use that setting.  http_proxy might catch whatever in Gaia's makefile is trying to talk to the network, though.
