Assorted Creations / Pretty Good: a tool for writing
« on: May 13, 2013, 12:17:50 PM »
There's a lot of writing software out there, but I couldn't find one that supported a workflow that I found comfortable. So I made my own instead!

PRETTY GOOD

"Pretty Good" is a simple, easy-to-use program intended to allow writers to easily manage a single draft as a collection of discrete sections. It runs in a browser, but all the data is stored locally. I've deployed a snapshot that you can use right now, but I recommend that you download a copy of your own off of GitHub and use it locally or host it on your own server.

HOW TO USE IT

First, replace my title and author's name with yours. The main editing area contains sections of text: put the text in the wider column and your notes in the narrower one. When your mouse is over a section, you will see some additional controls: the color-coded buttons indicate your progress on that section (I recommend understanding them, from left to right, as "Blank," "Unfinished," "Bad," "Pretty Good," and "Finished"), while the others are for adding, deleting, removing, and hiding sections.

Your progress will automagically be saved in your browser between sessions, but this can be somewhat volatile if you're not careful, so it's recommended that you make use of the "Export" and "Import" buttons to manually manage anything of substance.

The search box near the top will collapse the sections that don't match your input and expand the ones that do. I recommend putting #hashtags or some other distinctive syntax in your notes in order to get the most out of this feature.

I'm working on this every day, so features you request are likely to show up! In addition to your suggestions, I also intend to add a dynamic word count feature (which will no doubt be indispensable come NaNoWriMo), keyboard shortcuts (because using a mouse breaks up your rhythm), and making it less ugly.

OH

It was inspired by the supposed habit of P. G. Wodehouse of hanging each page of his unfinished manuscripts up on the wall, and moving them higher as their quality improved, only considering it ready for publication once all the pages were uniformly high. In a similar fashion, in Pretty Good, each "page" of text (which can, of course, stand for anything - one passage, one page, one scene, one chapter, whatever) can be labeled with a color-coded progress indicator and accompanied with notes indicating what you hope to accomplish therewith.

This program is still very much a work in progress, and I agree that as it stands now, it is neither pretty nor good. I just completed the core editing features this afternoon, I thought some of you might be interested to try this early version.

If you have a bug report or a feature request, you can put it here or on the GitHub page, and I promise I'll take it under very serious advisement.

Forum Games / Super Mafia Bros. YOU ARE A SUPER PLAYER
« on: March 12, 2013, 07:39:05 PM »
There are nine people in the Mushroom Kingdom:

Caithness
Classic
dtsund
Friday
gahitsu
Grath
Kayma
Lottel
Misha

Two of them are Mario and Luigi, but only those two know for sure! One of them is Bowser, and everybody but Mario and Luigi knows it!

With nine players alive, it takes five votes to kill somebody. Additionally, the first day will not end until everybody has posted at least once.

Game-related communication outside of this thread is strictly forbidden except for Mario and Luigi.

Forum Games / Super Mafia Bros.
« on: February 20, 2013, 12:03:41 PM »
So this here's a relatively vanilla game of mafia/werewolf that will be good as a way to wind down after VvW X ends (I will start this game as soon as that one ends).

Bowser has kidnapped the princess! To rescue her, Mario and Luigi have infiltrated the Koopa Troop wearing ridiculous disguises that successfully fool everybody.

Every day, by popular vote, one player is hauled off and subjected to all the comforts of the brig, removing them from the game (functionally a lynch, but the Koopa Troop doesn't execute soldiers merely on the suspicion of espionage). Every night, the Mario Brothers select a player and stomp on him and then see if the princess was in that particular castle.

One player is Bowser. All members of the Koopa Troop start the game knowing Bowser's identity, but the Mario Brothers do not. Bowser can be voted for but not incarcerated. Bowser has the princess; if the Mario Brothers target Bowser at night, they defeat him, save the princess, and win the game. If both Mario and Luigi are arrested, they lose and the Koopa Troop wins.

No matter how many players sign up, there will never be more than two Mario Brothers.

Who is interested?

This game uses different rules from Vampires vs Werewolves IX. I've taken the liberty of composing a new comprehensive rules document. Veterans may be more interested in just the changes to the rules, which are listed below:

The Weretiger can be both a Vampire and a Werewolf at the same time; all turn attempts against the Weretiger are treated as against a human.

There is no more Greater Werewolf role. Interactions between Werewolves and Vampires have been completely overhauled, and are summarized according to this table:
AttackerTargetResult
Werewolfordinary VampireVampire dies
WerewolfMaster Vampireboth die
Vampire kill attemptWerewolfboth die
Master Vampire turn attemptWerewolfboth survive and know each other

Dracula has a Night 0 scry.

One vanilla innocent will start the game with 5 less gold and a randomly chosen item. The item (but not its owner) will be revealed at the start of play.

A new role has been added: Death. Analogous to the Devil, Death wins with the Vampires and has the powers of the Vigilante.

A new role has been added: Frankenstein. Frankenstein's faction and inventory are not revealed upon death, and any player or players may pay 6 gold between them to resurrect Frankenstein as a night action after one night has passed.

The Ouija Board item has been removed.

The Lightsaber can now only be used to kill once. An additional item, the Double-Bladed Lightsaber, has been added. It is identical to the Lightsaber. If both items are owned at the same time, then the owner of either item may prevent the other from using it to kill on any given day.

The Last Will and Testament now reveals its user and target upon its activation at the user's death, rather than when the user declares its target.

Several new items have been added in addition to the Double-Bladed Lightsaber:

Human-Seeking Scrier: used once at night; the user is informed of the identity, but not the faction, of a random Human or Weretiger. Unturned Devil and Death can be targeted.

Almost Undetectable Poison: used privately during the day on a living player. The user must cast a vote for their target in order for the item to take effect, though the vote may later be rescinded. The target dies during the night and the cause of death is revealed as poison.

Monster Counter: the owner of this item knows at all times the exact number of living Vampires and the exact number of living Werewolves. Does not count Devils, Deaths, or Weretigers unless they were turned.

Betting Token: used publicly during the day. May only be used when ten or more players are alive. The user’s vote counts triple. If the target of the user’s vote is lynched and revealed to be human, the user is also lynched.

Fursuit: when the owner of this item is scried, their faction is not revealed; the scrier receives notice that the target’s species cannot be identified. The Private Investigator is not fooled.

This is going to be a game using the same rules as VvW9 proper, but possibly with a few items added or removed. Or maybe it'll have different rules based on the feedback from the last game. I will consult with Friday with the exact differences prior to the start of the game. I also hope to draft a complete self-contained rules list, as a benefit to future VvW games, rather than continue following the somewhat ad-hoc documentation currently in use.

Who will play?

Vampires vs Werewolves VIII / Would you like to play again?
« on: April 28, 2011, 07:31:51 AM »
Running these games is notoriously taxing on the host, and Friday's said she wouldn't do another Vampires vs Werewolves game for a few more months. However, since the rules seem to have been nailed down pretty well by this time, if there is interest, I would like to volunteer to moderate another game with the exact same ruleset.

Cheaply manufactured by a fly-by-night Chinese outfit and with a business model that depends entirely on brand confusion, pending sufficient signups, watch this space for Manpires vs Bearwolves IXtreme.

Any takers?

P.S. please also Friday join this game, because you've got to experience it from our end at least once.

Assorted Creations / The Comic Replacement Game: Again
« on: February 19, 2011, 07:34:58 AM »
You guys remember how the Comic Replacement Game goes, right? N players draw a comic strip of N-1 panels and send them to me, then I successively remove one panel from each and a different player has to reconstruct it from contextual clues, until every comic has been redrawn so that it contains zero original content. Then I share the horrible Frankensteins we made.

Signups close Monday. This is a fast game. Let's shoot for five cartoonists. Who will play?

Media / I'm trying to read the Mahabharata
« on: January 08, 2011, 09:06:38 PM »
and this thread is about how it's going.

I just started it today. Dove headfirst into the translation by Kisari Mohan Ganguli, dated 1883-1896, which is the only complete and unabridged English version. I am beginning to suspect that this was a tactical error. The sheer vastness of the text, and the circumstances of its composition, which are noted mythologically within the text itself, indicate that this is, perhaps, a work meant to be studied rather than read. To wit: on two separate occasions, one poet took the work of a previous poet and quadrupled its length with framing devices and digressions of all sorts.

I wasn't expecting the clear focus of a novel, but I can't even recognize the shape of this thing. I'm adapting to the linguistic idioms of the fairly literal prose translation from the Sanskrit, but the narrative idioms have so far eluded me. (This is exacerbated by the inconsistent use of nested quotation marks by either the translator or transcriber. And would it kill this guy to use paragraphs?) I didn't have trouble with Sauti describing the origin of the poem and how he came to know it; but Dhritarashtra apparently summarizing the events of the story in a rather dry way, like a recap taking place at the very beginning, so disoriented me that I had to start over three times before I realized what I was looking at.

I keep falling into the modern reader's habit of assuming that the author will not have a character start doing things without introducing them (or at least giving them more of an introduction than saying who their dad was). So what I'm thinking I'll do is regroup, find an abridgment intended as an introduction to the text, and come back to the full thing after I've gone through that.

I didn't want to make a new thread for this, but I apparently can't edit non-poll threads to turn them into poll threads.

There are some people amongst the viewership who have suggested to me that Sunday would be a better day than Saturday for Outer Heaven to run. People are more likely to be out on Saturdays, potentially complicating matters, but, on the other hand, staying up late on a Sunday might not be feasible with work/school the next morning.

Regardless of the choice, the new broadcasting format makes it effortless to show the stream at any point in time and I'll probably leave the show on infinite loop until Friday anyway. This is not a question of when the content will be available, but when the week's new content will begin, so to speak - the "official" time when the viewership will be highest and the conversation and camaraderie will be most pronounced.

Forum Games / Guild: Villain or Menace? (rules & signups)
« on: July 11, 2010, 01:38:12 AM »
This is a werewolf game for an odd number of players plus Guild. If Guild cannot be found, I will require a volunteer to replace him.

Guild most post during the daytime, but cannot vote, and he does not count towards anything. Guild may be voted for just as if he were a normal player. Lynching Guild ends the game.

Dead players' roles will not be revealed publicly; instead, Guild will be informed, and at the start and end of the day he must make an unambiguous posting of the nature of the previous phase's dead. He is permitted to lie.

There are two possible game configurations. I will decide one randomly and inform Guild of my decision; all other players will be ignorant of this choice.

In the Good Guild configuration, there are a number of werewolves equal to two less than the amount needed for a majority. At night, Guild may target one person; if his target is a werewolf, the target will die and the wolves' night kill will be prevented; if the target is innocent, nothing will happen to the target and the wolves will kill as normal. The werewolves cannot target Guild. Killing Guild results in victory for the werewolves and loss for all other players including Guild. The death of all werewolves results in victory for all other players including Guild.

In the Evil Guild configuration, there are no werewolves. A number of players equal to two less than the amount needed for a majority will be secretly designated as "targets," and the list of targets will be given to Guild at the start of the game. At night, Guild may target one person, and the target will die. Guild cannot target himself. Killing Guild results in victory for all players except Guild. The death of all targets results in victory for Guild and loss for all other players.

Living players are forbidden from changing their usernames during the course of the game, and dead players are discouraged from the same.

Outer Heaven broadcasts tentatively resume on July 31, at the usual time and place. In order for maximize the probability that I can actually pull this off, I need help from you.

Specifically, I need submissions and requests. If you can actually get me the video, chances are high that I will use it in the show. Outer Heaven is a community project, so I will always favor content that was asked for over content that I provide to fill in space, provided that it is something that would make sense to be on Outer Heaven. The highest priority of all will be given to original video created by members of the community.

If somebody has high-resolution versions of the Outer Heaven intro, outro, bumps, and other such content, please send it to me at your convenience. Additionally, any new clips will also be accepted at any time.

A volunteer assistant would also be great, and I'm going to need to be added to the auto-ops list in #outerheaven.

Work on Exquisite Knorpse 3 will begin shortly after the ending of Vampires vs Werewolves VII, out of deference to Friday, who will surely punish us most severely if she becomes overworked. I'm posting this thread early, however, because several people including myself have expressed interest in making this happen, and I didn't want the moment to pass.

What the fuck is Exquisite Knorpse 3?
Exquisite Knorpse 3 will be the third (and probably final) collaborative Knytt Stories level produced by this community. Each participant makes a section of the level, containing a single powerup, knowing only the locations of the exits of the sections which preceded them and the powerups expected at that location.

Why is this probably the last Knorpse?
Because people will be more interested in participating it if they think it's their last chance. If you are from the future, please do not spoil whether or not we succeed in never doing another one.

I'm sick of Knytt Stories!
So don't make an area and/or play the game.

How can I help?
Currently, we're not yet working on the level. We're currently in a "planning" phase where we actively discourage actual work. If you want to do a level, start thinking of a super creative idea for your area that will be an amazing surprise for all the others. Prototyping is acceptable as long as you do it in secret.

These things need to be done:
  • Find a dedicated and handsome volunteer director to manage the level thanks Newbie
  • Decide on a title (optional)
  • Lay down some ground rules to help make it a better game than the last two Knorpses
  • Recruit participants and assign them powerups
  • Depending on the schedules of the above participants, determine the order in which the areas will be experienced
  • Beg for art
So, the list, as it currently stands:

THE ABILITIES
Double Jump - Kayma
High Jump - Brentai
Hologram - Friday
Key: Red - Zaratustra
Key: Yellow - Bleck
Key: Blue - Catloaf
Key: Purple - Yyler
Proximity Detector - Newbie
Running - Lobst
The Eye - Healy
Umbrella - Bongo Bill
Wall Climb - McDohl
ANY - Constantine

THE ORDER OF AREAS VISITED
1. Lobst - Running
2. Kayma - Double Jump
3. McDohl - Wall Climb
4. Newbie - Proximity Detector
5. Bongo Bill - Umbrella
6. Yyler - Purple Key
7. Brentai - High Jump
8. Catloaf - Blue Key
9. Zaratustra - Red Key
10. Bleck - Yellow Key
11. Healy - Eye
12. Constantine - ANY
13. Friday - Hologram

Additionally, areas without any powerups can be made, as well as areas that, potentially, remove powerups. As long as it is known what powerups you enter and leave with, everything is fine. Managing their order and the way they fit together is the duty of the director, who alone can see how everything works.

After EK2, we saw some general trends in the various areas which, it was resolved, ought to be curbed from the beginning. Things like:
  • Too many fire shooters
  • Nondeterministic obstacles often creating impossible situations
  • Highly tricky obstacles a long way from a save point
  • Occasional poor visibility of save points and enemies
Some unobtrusive rules of thumb regarding these particular problems should be agreed on by all participants, for the benefit of all players, especially Frocto.

It is my personal belief that creativity in level design can be enhanced by designing levels for a less-powerful protagonist, so I'm going to suggest that we concentrate the non-ability-enhancing powerups (the keys, eye, and detector) more in the early parts of the game.

Additionally, since it was such a hit in EK2, we might want to have an extended endgame gauntlet containing a brief reprisal of an area from each participant.

Questions, comments, suggestions, demands, claims, coordination, and donations to the Citizens Against Frocto's Liver Foundation go here.

Forum Games / Confidence Wolf (interest thread)
« on: April 06, 2010, 11:25:08 AM »
Okay, so. This game will have a pretty ordinary mixture of roles. If present, Seers and Devils will get to scry on night 0. However, here's the main twist:

On all days except the first, the usual voting system will not be used. Instead, we'll use accusations. An accusation is a big deal. Only one may be made per day. Anybody may accuse another player of being a werewolf, but you cannot retract your accusation. Voting does not begin until after an accusation has taken place; players vote for either the accused or the accuser! (It is implied that the accused and the accuser vote for each other, so they will not be counted.) You cannot vote for anybody else! Just one of those two!

A day will go on as long as it has to until somebody makes an accusation. Once the accusation is made, players have 48 hours to cast their vote; the first to reach an absolute majority, or whoever has the most votes at the end of the time limit, will die, his role revealed, beginning the night phase.

Who will play?
