Finally watched last week's Smallville.

It's becoming increasingly clear that we will not be seeing the New Gods in the next two weeks, which practically makes the episode title, "Apocalypse", false advertising.

Instead what we got was another goddamn It's a Wonderful Life episode -- I guess I can't blame them, given that their take on A Christmas Carol is probably my favorite episode, the Clark-saves-Santa B story notwithstanding.

Anyway.  The writing was pretty mediocre, and all the best bits were just exploitative fan service.  The usual apocalyptic story that creates an excuse to kill everybody off.

Showing Clark's baby brother, confirming Jonathan's continued existence, and also bringing in the Sheriff were all wonderful touches as far as recounting the people who are dead as a result of Clark's actions.  However, bringing it down to "everybody dies anyway" is a gigantic fucking copout.  That and this whole episode was already done, better, a year ago on Heroes.  And frankly, Heroes spent much more time ripping off Watchmen than this ep did.

All that said, the visuals were solid and the direction was good; Tom Welling is probably a better director than he is an actor (though, in his defense, he probably does the best he can with the lines he's given).

Anyway.  They could still wrap the series up in the two remaining eps of this season, but since it's not happening, I expect to see a final season that closely resembles this episode -- wink-wink nods to the audience as Clark starts wearing glasses and working at the Planet.

Anyone else watch Reaper? I enjoy it, but to be honest, I'd still watch it if they cut out everything except for the Devil. The bastard makes me smile during every scene he's in.

Trailer for new X-Men toon is up.

Thoughts: it looks an awful lot like the 1990's one, in that it's got pretty animation but looks like it's going to be hugely bogged down by a way-too-big-cast and too many classic and recent stories being jammed together.

I really liked the 90s one though.

Yeah, I liked it when I was 10.

Have you watched it recently?

Actually, yes.  And had the same reaction to it that I had to everything I watched as a kid, a mixture of disbelief and amusement.

If a new cartoon doesn't evoke the same response then I have no real hope for it.  I'm pretty sure anything I like at 25 is not going to make it very far as a children's television program.

Ugh. Same mutant shit, different mutant day. At least the original cartoon had the decency to give the cast a range of expressions. Everyone here has an annoying guilty look on their faces, like they've all just been caught masturbating to grandma scat porn.

Smallville again:

Tying St. Christopher to Christopher Reeve was very clever.  The rest of the episode had a feeling of "we are wrapping up a seven-year story arc before the producers and two of the major cast leave."

The show's so schizophrenic when it comes to continuity -- Clark can find his girlfriend hanged in a barn and never speak of it again (all right, that's for the best, since the ep does not affect continuity and can and should be ignored); former major cast members like Pete Ross and Jason Teague went years without their names coming up before finally coming back into play this season, when suddenly we're into territory where if you haven't been paying attention since the very beginning of the series you're going to be thoroughly lost.

And then of course the resolution relied, yet again, on Clark failing to notice something.  Which is of course a serious problem with most writers on Superman: they have to make him stupid and sloppy (and overuse Kryptonite) to challenge him.

Related: Doomsday, unnamed female villain confirmed for season 8.  Most obvious and therefore most likely pick is Ursa.

Odds that Doomsday kills Clark and Chloe dies resurrecting him?

Torrented the first episode of Mad Men because I heard Yosaffbridge's breasts look great* it was good, and I was very pleasantly surprised. After the initial enjoyment of oodles of sexism and racism (as well as a few groaners; "Well, there was only one report, and there's no magic machine that makes exact copies of things!", and "I don't think it'll take much to convince America that Dick Nixon is a winner" come to mind), the depth of the scene between Draper and Menken in the bar caught me off-guard, in a good way. While I thought the aforementioned -isms a bit overplayed at times, and likewise for Draper's war history, I was nevertheless left with a very positive feeling as I finished the pilot.

So, I've gone ahead and started downloading the rest of the series, seeing as it probably won't air in Canadia for a good long while.

*this actually had a lot to do with my decision to check it out, but rather because I thought Christine Hendricks' played her character in Firefly brilliantly.
