Another Colorado shooting.  Shooter dead by suicide, appears to only be one gunshot victim who is still in critical condition.

Anyone who didn't catch the series premiere of Sleepy Hollow needs to correct that ASAP.  This show is amazing.

Seriously it's on Hulu.  Just ... just watch it.

(SPLIT BY THAD.  Context: Brown v EMA opinion, where, among other things, Scalia notes that people who want to control the distribution of video games due to objectionable content like racism are quite clearly attempting to restrict the dissemination of ideas they disagree with.)

To be fair, Resident Evil 5 is pretty much entirely going on safari to kill the scary negroes and steal their gold.  Might just be how Japan sees black people but everybody looks like this even before they're zombies.  And that's not even the tribal swamp levels.

A US-based "charity" offers UK drug addicts £200 to be permanently sterilized.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The organization has provoked controversy, partly from the way in which it promotes its activities, including allegedly targeting poor and minority neighborhoods for the placement of billboard advertising, and distributing flyers with slogans such as "DON'T Let a Pregnancy get in the way of your crack habit". In interviews [founder] Barbara Harris compared pregnant women to dogs that need to be neutered. This stance has invoked comparisons to the eugenics movement of the early 20th century.  Ms. Harris has repeatedly compared the women the program targets to animals, stating that "I’m not saying these women are dogs, but they’re not acting any more responsible than a dog in heat."  She has also stated: "We don’t allow dogs to breed. We spay them. We neuter them. We try to keep them from having unwanted puppies, and yet these women are literally having litters of children." In other contexts, she again compared women to animals, stating, "they’re having litters. They are literally having litters", "we campaign to neuter dogs and yet we allow women to have 10 or 12 kids that they can’t take care of"  and, "we have campaigns to spay cats to prevent them from having unwanted kittens, yet we allow these women to have litters of 14 children." On the television news program 60 Minutes II, Ms. Harris was asked about these comments on a television program and reaffirmed them, saying, "Well, you know my son that goes to Stanford said ‘mom, please don’t ever say that again,’ but it’s the truth, they don’t just have one and two babies, they have litters."

If you don't see what's wrong with a group targeting addicts - people with diseases impairing their judgment and ability to supply informed consent - and offering them cash - essentially, given that they're addicts, offering them another few hits - in exchange for sterilization, there is so much wrong with you it's hard to tell where to start.

So is Miracleman just another of those "Well you have to judge it by what he was trying to do and when he was trying to do it, not by what he actually did" things that Alan Moore seems to have built his career on?  Because all I'm really seeing here is everything that people found puerile and insulting about, ie, Infinite Crisis and such.

Observe and Report is one of the funnier movies I've seen in recent memory.  Black as fuck, and you'll be made to feel extremely uncomfortable at least once, and that's the point.  Beautiful.  Highly recommended.

Gaming Discussion / To Steam Or Not To Steam
« on: February 06, 2009, 09:47:40 AM »
... god damn it.

I just don't fucking understand people.  You hear that a game requires that a DRM suite be installed on your computer, shits all over your right of first sale for your copy, sends personal data to the manufacturers, and mandates that you check in with their servers before you get permission to play the game that you bought.  And if that suite is called SecuROM, you flip your shit, but if it's called Steam, you fucking applaud it.  What the fuck?

High-Context Discourse / Anyone going to PAX?
« on: August 25, 2008, 06:51:34 PM »
Anyone planning to attend PAX?  I'm just starting a semester and also on the opposite side of the country, but the City of Heroes people are giving out special codes for an ingame thing that I'd really really like to get.  Any chance someone could swing by and snag one for me?  And another for my girlfriend, if possible?
