Okay. So you can run around, dig tunnels, and flood them. You can also spawn tons of running jumpy guys. Is that all this does? Is this a not very lego blockland? This is severely lacking in dwarfs.

Survival Multiplayer comes out tomorrow. It won't have everything finished, since the mobs won't be in it, but it will still be fun.
PERSISTENT INVENTORY!
This is by no means a permanent solution, but here it is - client-side persistent inventory!
If you use this JAR file to open Minecraft, it will save your inventory every few seconds. If you quit and rejoin, your inventory will still be there!
This does not fix chests, furnaces, or anything like that. It only stores your character's inventory. Crafting slots are also discarded on disconnect.

This whole thing is pretty fucking incredible, all in all. Where did you get all the stone for that, anyway? Just the pits at the bottom of the castle?
Zed? You're insane. It's the brilliant kind of madness, but madness nevertheless.
How long did this take?
And that bridge! Did you lay down all the ice and everything before you excavated out everything under it, or did you build some kind of scaffolding?
That is something you should send to the creator, legitimately.
Who made this? How did you make it so big? It's absurd!
In the last 24 hours, 52546 people registered, and 23556 people bought the game.
I fixed the server's spawn point, unfortunately, I had to roll it back to do so.
Sorry if your shit is fucked.
When I click on the buy link NoScript tells me it blocked a potential XSS attack while redirecting to Paypal. It's to do with PayPal holding Notch's money hostage. Don't worry about it.
I am now hesitant again.
I'm really on the fence about this thing.Keep in mind, this is still not even in Beta. One of the modes Notch is going to add later on is an "adventuring" type thing where you can't dig normally, and the plan is to go and fight monsters in pre-generated dungeons. There's also going to be elements of that sneaking into the core game; Some of the randomly generated things in the world that are being looked at for the far future are dragon guarded hordes, villages populated by goblins, and abandoned towers and mines.
I love the world-building, a lot, but I wish there was something to do with your glorious creations after you were done. Something like being able to create a sprawling dungeon or beached ship and stuff it with enemies for a group to work through would be great. I guess that would demand a combat system a bit more complex that hitting the mouse button like thirty times (which I don't think is on the menu just yet).
It would be my dream to have a system wherein the server admins designate builders, and to everyone else it's a constantly growing adventure game.
I started playing this. Water makes no sense once you start digging / blocking around it.
I started playing this. Water makes no sense once you start digging / blocking around it.
Water always pours from "source" tiles. These tiles do not change (except with buckets which don't work in mp) and don't spread unless there's a water tile with two adjacent source tiles.

This is from yesterday when I was trying to fix the spawn point.
So I seemed to hit a rare cave yesterday. I found Records, Daimonds, Monsters, a perfectly laid out lava and water deposit coliding into eachother constantly for obsidian, and gunpowder for TnT.
So: water that touches flowing lava creates cobblestone... but water that touches one of these generative blocks of lava creates obsidian. You can create new obsidian, but since the generative square of lava is consumed in the process, it's not possible to set up a limitless obsidian farm at this time.
I've heard tell that it's not specifically the Lava Springs that generate Obsidian, but any Lava square that's still. There might be something can be done with hitting the square directly underneath a Lava Spring, but every time i try to experiment in single player i get killed by zombies or can't find iron or can't find lava.
My castle there on the bottom-left, completely overshadowed by the inverse pyramid.
Zed's giant doohickey is literally blocking the view of my project ::(:
Zed, I think I heard you were trying to build a sphere last night. If you're having trouble, use this circle grid to help out. It's been a life saver for me, and making a sphere using it shouldn't be too much trouble.
I'm determined to find something to do with cactus blocks.Giant Cactaur.

Yeah, there's a program that imports 3d models to minecraft.
someone send him that picture of all the dungeons interlocking
Whoever built the huge ass fort over the mystery path through the mountains, you're awesome. You did that in less than a day?
We're going to have to establish a self-guided tour of some sort.
Upthorn borked my lava pyramid...
stop breaking people's shit, people! D:Yeah, I'm sorry about that. It was a misunderstanding on my part. I mentioned on the server that I thought it'd look cool to convert Esper's pyramid from stone to glass, and people generally said "yeah, but it'd be a lot of work" or "yes, but it'd take a lot of sand", so I thought I had permission to do the work myself.
I'm very curious what the map looks like now.
Yeah, me too. I've been so absorbed with my own projects recently that I haven't had too many opportunities to see what people have been making on the server.
In an attempt to make things easier to find in our ever-expanding world, I decided to make some street signs for the glass walkway that Smiler's been building.
I dubbed the main part that goes from Zed's pyramid all the way past Kayin's airship "Main Street", and the short branch that goes towards my Death Orb "Slowpoke Way". I'll leave the naming of the other streets to more imaginative people.
I also had each sign indicate the compass directions in which it runs so it will be easy to say "Head north on Main St. until you reach..." etc.
I hope this is a better way of directing people than trying to have a billion signs indicating the direction of each individual project. We could even create a directory so people can locate projects they may not have found yet.
which reminds me, when are we getting that updated map?

If I did get in on this, what should I build?
And then you bitch at someone else detonates a creeper inside your super construction.
If the server goes pure survival, I'll go play by my self (or on some other server) unless a new map is genned. It seems silly as hell to transition the server from 'lol flat out crazy limitless construction and building" to a matter of survival and just leave all that other stuff hanging around. Not to mention the absurd about of resources already stockpiled.
So really, in my opinion, peaceful or new map. I'm good either way.
When Biomes are released, won't they be included in the new areas that are generated around the periphery? Is there any reason we couldn't just shift the spawn point toward the blank spots on the map and start building there?
Want to vote for #1 and #4.
So like, should I be buying this by the end of the month if I want to get the good price? I was just holding out of monster killing mode.
We don't get any of he cool new biomes stuff or anything
Sorry, I'm used to TASvideos style polls, where people post arguements to support their decisions and can be swayed, and the end result tends to be weighted towards the side that is better reasoned. My apologies, I shouldn't have come down on you for giving your opinions when I've already given mine. The poll does allow people to change their votes if they want.

Penny Arcade did a comic about Minecraft and the resulting torrent of subscriptions knocked the guy's server out.

I wanted to show you guys this http://github.com/brownan/Minecraft-Overviewer (http://github.com/brownan/Minecraft-Overviewer)
It's a python script that makes a google maps interface for your minecraft world, sort of like if Cartographer or whatever were good. First time running it is pretty nuts (took me about an hour with 5000 chunks) but after that it gets better due to caching.
The world I run is here http://suckramento.org/tldmc/pigland/ (http://suckramento.org/tldmc/pigland/) -- not too built up, but that's an example.
thought you guys might like it.
also, if you use hey0's mod, there's a script you can get in the discussion area that turns warp points into markers. think there is one for sign posts too somewhere.

Crazy idea: if we start over after the Halloween update, petrify the old area using some clever block replacer, before moving the spawn point several miles. Replace almost every block type with cobblestone or unworked stone, and replace leaves, torches and maybe water with air blocks.
This way, the old area can be explored as a ruin, but not mined for resources.

except for the part where he's not doing this for free like the Dwarf Fortress guy, and hasn't put out a meaningful update in like two months, and the majority of people playing the game have paid for it, and he's basically the most successful independent developer of all time simply because of word of mouth from the players who you think are complete assholes.
I'm not saying the DDOSers are right, but jesus christ, this isn't an issue of him doing something out of the good of his heart and being attacked for no reason.
If we were real men, we would build EVERYTHING in Hell and not just use it for traveling.
@notch I dont suppose SMP will be getting damage with this halloween update, will it?
@Gagtech we'll see next week during the crunch.
@notch @Gagtech PLEASE WE NEED THIS SOOO BAD!!
@Mast3r_Shak3r @Gagtech If it's not in for the 31'st, it will be soon after. SMP is highest priority.
So SMP is his highest priority, but the fix that would make SMP actual SMP instead of a glorified creative mode is might be delayed until after the content update. Which, might I add, contains new mobs that won't be in SMP, unless he updates health/damage.

I'm not sure if thats actually true. Without a lot of other features, damage in SMP would just be obnoxious and make the game suck. For example: If SMP had health now. I'd just be an annoyance that punishes you for slipping. I don't care if it takes a bit more to add health, because without having other stuff, SMP will just be a piece of shit. I'd rather have creative then an obnoxious, unfun version single player.
But... but... when he fixes health I can finally push people off cliffs FOR REALS
Enemy mobs spawn on blocks with a light value of 7 or less. A block with a torch in it has a light value of 14, and any block with a non-zero light value raises the light value of adjacent blocks up to its own minus 1. So you have to make sure every walkable tile in your construction is within 7 blocks of a torch, taking into account whether the torch is at floor level or elevated and if it has to "flow" around obstacles.

I played on a server today that used this. While we don't know how it's going to be affected by Sunday's update, I'd highly recommend we use the hey0 mod and some of the plugins. The server I played on had a variety of features, including the ability to /sethome to relocate individual spawn points (but which doesn't affect compasses—they still point to the original spawn), /warp to teleport players to any location an admin has keyworded, player privileges which prevent unsolicited visitors from being able to access the contents of chests or destroy any existing blocks, rollback commands to either restore the entire server or selected portions, the admin ability to move entire pieces of landscape, an admin command to remove all TNT in an N-block radius, and more. It seems like the sort of thing we could really use.
You can already warp out of sticky situations with /home.

<Upth> oh goddammit
<Upth> so, patch introduced a new bug that only happens in MP
<Upth> you can no longer walk on the top z-layer
<Upth> if your head goes above the top buildable level, you get stuck and start twitching and can't move or fall or lay blocks
<Upth> until you /home
<Brentai> :|
<Upth> doesn't occur in SP, so it must not be intentional
Fire up some kind of map editor, lower everything by one Z level?
Portals don't quite match up yet. Like, if you make a Earth portal, the Nether portal might get relocated to a nearby tile to avoid clipping, and then when you come back it'll link to a different location.

I believe it's 16 real world blocks for every block in the slip/hell/nether.
It's not that bad. Signs are pretty innocuous. From a programming perspective, giving signs differing abilities based on their text is an ugly hack.

(I know that) There are many ways

General fixes:
* players and mobs in lava or fire no longer spam sound effects
* getting hit with a higher damage while recovering from a smaller one now works as intended
* lava flows further in the Nether
* zombie pigs eventually forgives
* added support for custom texture packs
* fixed duplicate buttons when resizing screens
* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
* fixed volume sliders now saving properly
Multiplayer fixes:
* hellworld=true no longer overwrites old save chunks. Player positions will still break if you switch it on a running server, though
* boats are now visible to other players
* minecarts move nicer
* fishing kinda sorta works, but needs more work
* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
* buckets work now
* fixed stairs being really difficult to destroy
* increased the timeout before “Took too long to log in”
* made it possible to ride carts and boats (pigs should work too..)
* zombie pigs eventually forgivesBut still never forgets.
Does "minecarts move nicer" break boosters, though?
* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
Quote* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
They looked like something else before?
Quote* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
Shame. I was pushing zombie pigs into fire pits for free pork. They didn't become hostile if you set them on fire.
The appeal of boats and trains in multiplayer is entirely aesthetic.Speaking of which, Kayin and I were experimenting with minecarts for science, and I believe what I did after he left has crashed the server.
At least that gave me the chance to bump the memory allocation back up to 2GB and turn Hellworld on. Have fun!
At least that gave me the chance to turn Hellworld on. Have fun!So apparently this doesn't quite work quite the way we expected it to. Instead of making portals work, it just sticks us in the hell dimension. This shouldn't actually overwrite our existing mapdata, but may still be worth turning back off.
Even if the two portals are fairly far away in the overworld they're probably so close they would overlap in the slip.
eg won't spawn in the middle of the ocean, so it'll move you to a nearby beach)
Or it'll make the portal out of 16 blocks (so portal with a floor, basically) and hover you 20 blocks over the ocean.
Or it'll make the portal out of 16 blocks (so portal with a floor, basically) and hover you 20 blocks over the ocean.
I would be wary of installing any sort of gameplay-changing mods before the beta because I have a feeling they will probably break by the time multiplayer features are fully implemented. That was my instinct too.
Exactly. My gut says mods are going to make resource problems like the ones that were and are present with minecart physics, tnt, and fire more likely.
Okay, I think it's in now. Somebody let me know if it's working.
Right now you press 1 button to summon a cart and another button to send it off. Sadly you can't activate the button from the cart due to multiplayer issuess, so you have to click the button to launch and quickly click the cart.I didn't have any issues pressing the button from inside the cart. You just have to right-click the button, instead of left. Same would probably be true of switches etc.
Are we still saying the land behind Stacktus is wilderness/frontier? If so, I don't think it would make sense for a cart system to go out further than the fort. You know that in real life US history they put railways right through the western frontiers and way beyond, right?
EDIT: and also how do I connect to the server I don't have the current address apparently.
right at the top of every page on the forum
ZedPower: I found the diamond armor set but did not take it, because my inventory was full, because we can't see other people's armor in SMP yet, and because I wasn't sure if it was right to raid your secret stash before the structure is even complete.
The minecart travel system is neat.
Experimental evidence indicates that, no matter how awesome it may seem, building a closed loop of minecart tracks over continuous gold boosters is a bad idea.
After about 30 seconds, I was flung from the track, caught fire, suffocating in open air, and the world was twitching as though I had entered the hellish void.
using /spawn and disconnecting, I seem not to have left any ghosts, but upon reconnection it took a fair bit longer than normal for the world to load.
Please do not repeat this experiment, it seems dangerous to the server.
PVP toggle sounds fun, because honestly I don't think I'd really bother with true survival multiplayer. Single player is quite easy as is. Having some huge indestructible group build fortress in a day doesn't sound particularly great.... Unless we were KILLING EACH OTHER.

I went ahead and added the safeties myself, I also added switches at each safety to let riders return to the previous one.I started working on an underground train that connects the hill between Fort Zaratustra and spawn to a place very far away. Minecraft will reach Beta status on December 20th, 2010.
(...)
We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.
We're taking it out because it scares both lawyers and the board.
So people who buy accounts after the beta hve to pay for updates, but im free for life because I paid for it in alpha?
They MIGHT have to pay, we don't know yet. We're changing it because the promise is scary. But you're safe.
You'd have to mine 485,396 blocks and go through 473 diamond picks to do it.
A MINECRAFT FACT (tm)
Surviving isn't fun, since combat isn't very fun.
yeah, what i mean is "MONSTERS EVERYWHERE! EVEN IN YOUR HOUSE! XD"MOER LIEK
in singleplayer you build forts to keep them out and then never bother with them again
Well, with a dedicated API I'm counting on the community to step up some features we need. Improved combat, better mob behavior, maybe even a kind of adventurer mode so we can be more vocal about the server and let pubs on.I wonder if he's going to do anything regarding dissemination of mods (eg. server has a mod, client doesn't, client downloads mod from server). Also wonder how client/sever mods are going to be handled as well, what limitations are there to what you can do with the API, how easy will it be to make an interface to it for a civilized language and will anyone save me the trouble of trying to write one, etc.
I don't know if you can move it from world to world, but there you are.I believe MCEdit can move stuff, in the form of schematics.
Whoa (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/12/17/promised-lands-minecraft-biometerrain-mod/).
The big wins are supposed to be server-side inventory and leaf decay.
Might want to wait for a day or two, though, as currently the beta update has some problems. Huge slowdown and slightly dysfunctional leaf decay (surprise!).
I deeply apologize for the lack of updates to the server. I was asked to do it last night but ended up getting way too wrapped up in bangingyour mom.
I miiiiight be able to work some magic with my expensive miracle phone, but no promises. More news as it occurs.
Not terrible.
IF I have time tomorrow (still have to pack) the likely solution will be to finally set up a new admin. It's probably not a stretch to tar up a gestalt while I'm at it.
I'm down with a head cold today (weakly dicking with my phone in front of the tv) but I'll have to do it tomorrow since I won't have access to my PC for a while after that.
the secret to pulling yourself away from minecraft is to start work on an ambitious project that you will never, ever finish

Man, why the hell is Iron so impossible to find?
I've been digging quite deep (though the wiki says it has an equal incidence anywhere below sea level, really), but rarely do I find veins of more than two or three blocks. With the number of uses iron has, it's definitely a big limiting factor.
Too bad I can't turn Redstone Dust into iron, I have a metric fuckton of that.
The secret to minecraft is you aren't going to find more shit in a nerdhole (I dug straight down, yuk yuk) than you are exploring caves, the nerd holes will just cost you a lot of resources and ultimately leave you with pretty much nothing. Basically you have to explore the shit out of caves, find veins of ores and then mine them. Leave torches to find your way back, of course.
The problem with playing on Not Peaceful is that the combat in this game is still just no good.
I think you're missing their point which is that after you know what to expect and how to handle those threats the threats become less interesting/fun and more annoying/stupid
You hit the Ghast in the second left tendril with your -Diamond Longsword-. The second left tendril flies off in a bloody arc! The Ghast wails.
Well, you could use Minecraft AutoMap (http://minecraftam.com/Default.aspx). I've thought about using it myself, but I figured that having to rely on my sense of direction made things more interesting. I can see how it might be no fun if you keep getting lost, though.
spend all night barricaded in a light place.
So it's exactly like peaceful except you have to spend all night barricaded in a light place, and sometimes you die anyway.

explosions don't cause damage or deform terrain underwater, under usual circumstances. try placing TNT at the bottom of the ocean.I knew they didn't affect blocks underwater, but if they don't cause damage, then I was misled by the wiki.
In Beta, there is no way to pick up a TNT after it has been placed, but it can be detonated without damaging surrounding blocks by immersing it in water, for example by placing a water spring atop the TNT, then detonating it. However this explosion would still damage a player or a mob.

Oh well!
Monsters never seemed to spawn into actual spawn. Hell, they seemed to break if they tried to follow you into it. It was really just a matter of falling into the drink and having to find a half-assed way to get out since you couldn't build or destroy any blocks near there.
This sounds like a joke, but it works: dig up some dirt and bury your really valuable stuff in a chest. Pick an inconspicuous spot that isn't too likely to suffer from accidental creeper misfortune and that no one will dig up by accident, like under an interior wall or a basement floor, or even somewhere in the terrain surrounding your home if it's clearly not an ideal site for additional construction. Heck, if you're really paranoid, put it under the sea floor somewhere. As long as nobody's around to see you when you fiddle with your stash, it's as foolproof as it gets.

Most other things, like the terrain generation seeds and entity locations use 64 bit doubles for locations, and they do much subtler things. For example, at extreme distances, the player may move slower than near the center of the world, due to rounding errors (the position has a huge mantissa, the movement delta has a tiny, so it gets cut off faster). The terrain generator can also start generating weird structures, such as huge blocks of solid material, but I haven’t seen this lately nor examined exactly what behavior causes it to happen. One major problem at long distances is that the physics starts bugging out, so the player can randomly fall into ground blocks or get stuck while walking along a wall.
What's really great is how these bugs aren't planned, they're just the natural result of how Notch created the game, kind of singularity bugs in the system. It'd be interesting if more complex code began generating more complex, crazier errors.
lava behaves irrationally. if it gets like that, prevent forest fires by putting dirt on it.
No, seriously, i spent the better part of a week trying to figure out how to make infinite lava, i actually know what i'm saying here.
Salvation on Zanzibarland was recently heavily damaged after a series of tests went horribly wrong. Anyone willing to risk floods of lava to try and loot what I had to leave behind is welcome to it.
Pfft. It's meant to convert people to the Jedi religion. As we've just seen, it's like the cave on Dagobah: there's nothing in there, except what you take with you.

So has Mojang actually updated this game with anything significant since Notch formed this company? You'd think we'd have a working combat system or something by now.

Slimes - their natural history and husbandry
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30522032/slimes-assorted.png)
Part 1. What are slimes?
Briefly, slimes are complex organisms somewhere between algae and sponges. They also have qualities shared with bacteria and with fungi, namely phagocytosis and asexual reproduction. Unlike these kingdoms however, slimes are eukaryotes with behaviour-driven motility and lack a cell wall.
ANATOMY OF A SLIME
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30522032/slimes-anatomy.png)
A slime has a top or lid, face, sides or sidewalls, rear wall, and a base. Living slimes are always oriented thus, and instantly re-orient themselves base down whenever they are tilted or fall at an angle. This is due to the statocyst or positional sensor organ in the slime's lid. It functions like a primitive inner ear to orient the slime in space.
Other important anatomical landmarks of the slime include:
- Chiton - the thick outer slime coat that serves as a protective coating for the slime, and a primitive gut. The chiton is secreted by the capsule, the elastic true skin of the slime.
- Macula(e) - the sensory apparatus of the slime. They have been called "eyes" and "mouth" because of their shape. They are relatively insensitive to light, but detect exquisitely small movements and magnetic fields.
- Inclusions - These are mostly debris picked up and embedded in the thick chiton. Some inclusions are products of digestion from items the slime has engulfed.
- Gonad - A region of the slime that seems to be more metabolically active in the company of other slimes of the same size.
- Zoochlorellae - These are symbiotic algae and cyanobacteria that live inside the slime and provide it with oxygen and starches. In turn the slime protects the algae from heat and desiccation and provides trace minerals and reduced nitrogen compounds. These organisms are what give the slime its green color.
Internal Structure of the Slime
The capsule of the slime is tough and elastic, like a tendon or a thick sheet of rubber. Inside the capsule, the slime consists of three specialized areas, arranged roughly from front to rear.
- The pyxosome is the area right behind the maculae and is a heavily pigmented mass of dense but friable gelatinous material. Microscopically, it is composed of myriads of nests and coils of sarcoplasm surrounding larger canals filled with serum. The serum component has a high content of soluble heavy metals including redstone, iron, gold, and adminium. It is possible that as much as 70% of a world's elemental adminium is bound up in slimes, the rest occurring as the dark bars in common bedrock. The pyxosome may be responsible for slime's sensory functions.
- The opisthosome occupies the rear of the slime and contains the gonad. In truth the gonad is acellular but rather is made up of a few large, pale inclusions with high organic nutrient content. Bergensten et al. propose that the structure actually is where undigestible materials are stored so as not to damage the slime's internal chemistry.
- The elasmosome makes up the majority of the slime and is a colorless to light green, translucent material the consistency of Guk (TM). This is composed almost entirely of matted lattices of microtubules. This is the locomotive engine of the slime and surrounds the other two internal portions, anchoring them to the capsule and to one another. It also provides extensions through the capsule to anchor the chiton in place and stimulate additional chiton secretion in regions of high shear stress.
The commercial slimeball is actually made up of the elasmosomes of freshly killed slimes.
Habitat of Slimes
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30522032/slimes-lava.png)
This herd of slimes occupied the lava pool shown here for several minecraft days.
Slimes are found deep underground, in areas where constant high temperature and humidity prevail. Since slimes are facultatively photosynthetic, they thrive in and around caverns lit up by magma flows, volcanic vents, and even the high energy lamps used in deep shaft mining. Due to their thick chiton, they are notoriously resistant to fire and burns.
Since slimes require oxygen to live, they rely on their symbiotic zoochlorellae to provide a small amount. Transplanting a slime into a totally dark oxygen-poor volcanic flue or sulfur vent can suffocate it. However, if a light source is provided, the slime may survive indefinitely (although it will not grow or reproduce).
The small slime in the center foreground is drowning.
Slimes are limited to areas where water and ambient moisture are high. Although they can desiccate if stranded or trapped in dry air, they can retain a lot of water and this allows them to migrate long distances to new caverns.
Contrary to popular belief, slimes can't swim and they do drown when submerged in water. Commercial elastics harvesting relies on large deep pools or moving conveyors to drown young slimes.
These slimes are migrating from a dry underground tunnel system to a freshly opened mineshaft, which is still damp.
Slime Life Cycle
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30522032/slimes-stampede.png)
Slimes of all sizes and life stages in a stampede, a rare and dangerous phenomenon associated with strip mining or flood mining.
Slimes reproduce either sexually (details unknown) or asexually (fission) to produce daughter slimes. The daughter slime or calf is less than 1 m cubed and has little or no enzymatic activity. It contains relatively more nutrients in the form of inclusions. These sustain the small slime until its own enzymes mature.
As the slime grows, it becomes capable of engulfing items for food. These digestive properties of the chiton may cause damage on contact with the slime. When it is roughly 8x the weight of a new calf slime, it can reproduce by fission. This often happens when the slime is damaged - the slime divides along a defect in the capsule, healing the defect and producing up to four daughter slimes.
A mature slime is quite large, slow-moving, and heavy. It has a relatively low moisture content compared to the youngest slimes. To compensate, it produces more concentrated digestive enzymes and acids which are toxic to nearby lifeforms. As a slime ages, its elasmosome loses elasticity and tends to calcify. This can result in large, old slimes getting trapped in corridors or narrow spots and suffocating.
Slimes have a remarkable elasticity. This image shows the range of slime compressibility in normal locomotion. Slimes may fit through doors and in stairwells that appear to be much too small.
Slime Ecology
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30522032/slimes-cub.png)
A matriarch slime protecting a daughter.
Slimes are found in herds throughout the world, always in geothermally favourable chunks. Although slimes do not exhibit nesting behavior or any other advanced social system, they do have a primitive herd behavior wherein the larger slimes may protect the smaller ones. Small slimes in a herd may collectively push invaders away from resources or off precipices. Slime intelligence is otherwise rather low.
Slimes - unicellular or multicellular?
Are these slimes identical, or fraternal, twins?
Scientists are not sure how to classify slimes. So far no one element of slime anatomy or microanatomy definitely places them in either class. The slime has features of both:
Features in favor of unicellular organism
- Body plan consistent across all slime populations and ages/sizes
- Asexual reproduction is the norm and produces slimes of roughly equal sizes
- Never reconstitute into a single large slime after dividing into four smaller slimes
Features in favor of multicellular organism
- Sexual reproduction possible
- Discrete and differentiated regions of the slime, i.e. organs and tissues
- Appear multi-layered, similar to other algal colonies or syncytia
- Cannot be divided without killing the original slime
Perhaps the strongest evidence for slimes being multicellular is the macula, which doesn't appear to have a direct physical communication to any other part of the slime, but activates locomotion and storage of trace metals in other parts of the slime.
Slimes and the Future
(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30522032/slimes-sunlight.png)
Slimes in a slime game park enjoying a brief moment in full sun.
Slimes have been transformed by popular culture over the past 5 expansions. The slime is a strong symbolic figure in the human psyche as a rare, elusive, dangerous, alien, even droll and endearing creature. Modern technology relies heavily on slimeballs as a commercial product, from slimes grown in artificial labs in great numbers under ideal conditions. One disturbing development is the breeding of slimes for populating slime parks and safaris. Slimes are bred and brought to the surface and exposed to sunlight. This causes them to take on an intense green color and become agitated. They are then released into well-tended parkland and hunted from the air or the roadside. Some parks let hunters use packs of hunting dogs. This last is exceedingly cruel for both the slimes and the dogs.
Hunting slimes with dogs is illegal in several countries.
Slime petting zoos are common children's roadside attractions in mining towns. Because the smallest slimes are innocuous, they can be held and petted. Sadly, they are force spawned by slimepunching, wherein adult slimes are placed in a machine and pummeled with pistons or even a handler's gloved hands. The slimes accumulate damage and eventually split off daughter slimes. Once tourist season is over, the baby slimes are frequently drowned or dropped off a ledge. The resulting slimeballs are then sold to elastics firms.
The Slime Protection Agency was founded in 2010 to protect slimes from exploitation and promote humane industrial and commercial slimeball harvesting.
Since then Dupont has developed the first artificial elastic material for making sticky pistons. Slimes remain a curiosity and are still subject to abuses as pets and trophy game mobs.
Addendum: Slime Genetics
Although the slime has a gonad, sexual reproduction has never been directly observed. The main supporting evidence for sexual reproduction is genetic:Multiple studies of slimes from widely separated chunks show that certain adaptive traits are inherited in Mendelian fashion.
Slimes tagged with dyes or radiotracers produce a mixture of tagged, subthreshold-tagged, and untagged offspring.
A single large slime heterozygous for the spontaneous despawning syndrome allele does not in fact generate two groups of homozygous offspring, but rather after a few ticks some heterozygous daughter slimes are found, suggesting inbreeding by sexual reproduction.
If slimes sexually reproduce, it is not know what happens to the gametes or the zygote. The gonad as was stated before, appears acellular. Furthermore, daughter slimes have a very characteristic and uniform size. Lastly, there does not appear to be any gestational sac or organ in the slime or deposited anywhere outside the slime. Yogscast et al. dismantled the Persson theory of slimes laying eggs in lava. Slimes deprived of lava for over 3 minecraft days still produced heterozygotes for yellow inclusions; and lava from 11 different slime colonies was congealed, pulverized, dissolved, and subjected to Western blot for slime tubulin, a heat stable slime protein. No sample was found positive for any slime proteins.
It's thought that slimes may exchange plasmids on contact, so that recombination can occur without sexual reproduction. However, no plasmid has been identified in slimes.
The sex life of slimes remains a mystery.
More slime facts and trivia
The diet of slimes is highly varied and depends on the underlying terrain. Slimes prefer diets rich in protein and will corner and engulf miners and dogs. They devastate wheat farms haplessly grown in slime chunks by dropping on them from above. Captured slimes containing embedded swords, pickaxes, armor, buckets, and leather boots in various states of digestion are not uncommon. Unlike the gelatinous cube, however, corpses are not persistent inside the slime and are usually digested and absorbed very quickly.
Slimes are some of the longest-lived mobs known to science. The slime has no natural predators and survives many natural disasters and environmental extremes. It lives in a forbidding niche habitat hostile to other underground denizens and is omnivorous. Therefore it is common to find slimes that are as old as Beta and not unheard of to find slimes that were born sometime during Alpha. The oldest known slime is a great calcified behemoth known as "116" or "Gus" who was born on Seecret Friday in a singleplayer save in a student library hard drive at Stanford University. Gus'
world has been updated to Beta 1.7.3, and Gus spent a brief time invisible on login during Beta 1.4. A quick peek in MCEdit confirmed that Gus was still present as an entity and soon revealed himself again.
Venerable ancient slimes like Gus are rare, however. Aging-related diseases of slimes include calcification of the elasmosome, mineral deficiencies, suffocation due to wedging, red tide (algal colony death syndrome), macular degeneration, and malabsorption. But most slimes do not die of these chronic ailments, rather they actually die of accidents, falls, drownings, suffocations, and opportunistic predation by spelunkers.
Slime tissue is highly sought after for cancer research because slimes do not despawn when left unattended. In the past, researchers described strains of immortal slimes known as "Clientside slimes" after their discoverer, H. P. Clientside. The Clientside slime is now confirmed to be extinct. (See Clientside Pig and Clientside Leaf Decay for more descriptions of Dr. Clientside's work with longevity genes and tumor suppression.)
Slimes appear periodically in history as important figures in the background of human affairs. At least one major fantasy monster was designed based on slimes, and they appear in popular books, magazines, websites, and popular indie games. Before slimes became a household image, they were a common subject of miners' folktales. Historically slimes were also important in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, as people coveted their longevity. Sadly, slime tissues and secretions have a very disagreeable and acrid taste. Some slime extracts contain enough heavy trace metals to slowly poison the patient. That said, some surgical device companies are testing slimeballs as a tissue adhesive for wound repair. And the unique longevity of slimes is of immediate and significant interest to cancer research (see above).
In the middle ages the slime was both revered and reviled as a symbol of eternity and as a denizen of Hell. In truth, slimes are not found in Hell but instead are limited to the mundane world. As a symbol of eternity, stability, and loyalty, slimes and slimeballs appeared in various heraldic coats of arms. The bloque vert of the Contessa Mucosa is the most famous example. The symbol persists in the modern era as the logo for the tax prep company H&R Block.
In 1941 the founding president of H&R Block, Redston Block, removed the maculae from the logo to increase its appeal in mining and construction communities.
what would you even do at a minecraft con
what would you even do at a minecraft con
No but seriously the idea is awful
A convention around one game?
The real question is what percentage of attendees will cosplay as a creeper.
bigshell doesn't work. Like, at all.
Just a heads up: I temporarily replaced Bigshell with a new survival map.
How many contradictions can you find between these four points?
Zara bitches that people don't instantly act on his server suggestions.
Well it's nice to have to work for what you build, but not have it randomly destroyed by fucking creepers and endermen once it's done.
Uh, in case you guys didn't know, they're killing peaceful off for 1.8. The only modes will be creative and survival (only survival will now be called "adventure").

Actually a switch to turn on/off various mobs would be swell. First thing I'd zot are slimes, which seem to serve no purpose other than to fuck up the fauna count.
Pretty sure mods will fix up all these issues, if they actually exist, within the first week.
Mongrel, can I get source on them killing off peaceful?
Interview with Jeb (http://www.minecraftforum.net/news/192-an-interview-with-jeb/)
He doesn't explicitly say "peaceful is being removed" but he does say survival will be replaced by the adventure mode.
There doesn't seem to be any info on what "optional" means when Notch says hunger is "optional" or Jeb says NPC villages are "optional". It could be that your "options" are a) suck it up and deal b) go play Creative. I'd prefer that Adventure Mode player options menu lets you line-item veto the rubbish components, and keep what you want.
Peaceful - you can still die if you fall or drown or bathe in lava or get struck by lightning. You can still gather wool, porkchops, eggs, and milk (the hard way). E.g. it's possible to still play a recognizable Minecraft game if you're in Survival - Peaceful.
Creative Mode as it was described today at PAX seems to be mostly a level editor. You fly around, have infinite blocks and items, construct and mine things quickly, don't deal with mobs, ostensibly take no damage, and otherwise don't really interact with your environment.
I will be rebooting bigshell. I don't know what people want to do with zanzibarland.
I'll be trying to move some structures from bigshell to the new server, assuming I can get hold of the old files. If you guys have any votes for what should be moved, do share.
Also, probably some earlier versions without the Libyan architecture.
Can that be used to start a server? Or is it only good for single-player play.
It's as if there was something inherently dishonest about the cake.
eating rotten meat from zombies (which is actually healthy, to my surprise)
So the minecraft world is making hay out of the fact that both Fried Chicken and Watermelon have just been added to game at the same time as nasty black-skinned enemies.
The comparison probably wouldn't have even been noticed if Notch hadn't made a terrible n-word joke on twitter a couple weeks ago. :whoops:
On the other hand, Endermen are impossible to beat at the new basketball minigame.
FUCK YES

this about covers my thoughts about it these days
Removed some Canadian English stereotypes.
Multiplayer no longer says "Go camping with your buddies, eh?"
Industrialcraft's cabling has an entirely different use. It conducts power from generators to machines, like electric furnaces. Essentially, it replaces coal power generation, not redstone. No, I get this. My point is... why invent an entirely new and incompatible method of power transmission instead of just improving on the existing one? Redstone is supposed to be a simplistic depiction of electricity. Why does it need a second, more complicated depiction of a second form of electricity?

Yes, but, why would you not want that? Why invent an entirely new and incompatible method of power transmission instead of just improving on the existing one? Redstone is supposed to be a simplistic depiction of electricity. Why does it need a second, more complicated depiction of a second form of electricity?Redstone torches never run out. They only convey on/off, not amounts of electricity. If you ran an electrical furnace on redstone, it would run indefinitely on a single redstone torch.
If one electric furnace ran off one torch, then a normal furnace would run indefinitely on one piece of coal. It's the same thing. In a reasonable mod, that would be the whole point of including an electric furnace -- an upgrade to the furnace so you never have to refuel.
The point of mods isn't just to make survival into creative mode but slowerRemoving the necessity of refueling the furnace with coal/wood/lava doesn't suddenly give you infinite iron/gold/whatever, it'd just mean you can stop cluttering your chests up with coal, and reclaim the storage space for blocks that you can actually build with...
wait why do we need upside down stairs what am I missing:slow:
It's not just about building my fortress, it's that I found all the minerals and survived danger to do it.These. I hate creative because I like having to work for the materials, but at the same time, I am not so good at actually surviving. I've played on a few SMP servers, where we would go mining in teams to reduce the danger, and then build as a team. It was fun until people started getting in fights or leaving. Some people liked the teamwork, but other people weren't really their for multiplayer, they were there to play single player while talking to people, and then easily show off their creation.
I just wish there was an option to not lose inventory when you died, or something along those lines.
