Okay so yeah those single-wide walkways are deathtraps on account of all the creepers who spawn on top and then dive-bomb you when you happen to pass underneath. :ohshi~:

at least i can stop wondering why i occasionally blow up while wandering around

haha wow. I'm even more glad i made those now. Hilarious! Anyway you can just solve by putting torches everywhere like someone did, instead of just at corners like i did

I found a neat way to breathe underwater. Sink to the bottom and place a door. Water can't go through doors, even open doors. A square with a door is a square with breathable air.

Can we get Bigshell back for this week, at least?

Whoa.

Tried this out. It's really easy to make uninhabitable landscapes and maps that take forever to load or outright break the game. With restraint, though, you can generate some really cool landscape—to say nothing of fixing the diamond shortage in singleplayer.

The big wins are supposed to be server-side inventory and leaf decay.

Might want to wait for a day or two, though, as currently the beta update has some problems. Huge slowdown and slightly dysfunctional leaf decay (surprise!).

Plus, uh, you can dupe stuff by dropping it on the ground.

That and I noticed the server you guys have uses hMod, which isn't updated yet (at least as far as a release goes--haven't checked their git, svn, or whatever the hell hMod uses).

Speaking of hey0, have you folks looked at this plugin?  A dynamic map plugin for hMod with a Google Maps powered frontend.  I use it myself, and if the whole assemblage wasn't running off of my DSL, I'd probably write a forward to my webserver and post a link to show you all.  Fortunately, the author posted a link to his installation in the thread.  (Ignore the 'unable to get update data', he probably updated his server, so it's not running hey0 or the plugin--normally you could see player positions, warps, homes, etc.)
Neat, but has issues.

Also, am I missing something?  I know he said he was going to make updates optional and all, but did he actually put that in and I failed to notice?  Or, when you suggest holding off a bit, do you just mean 'make Minecraft not able to talk to Notch's servers' as the method of holding off?

"Holding off" in the sense that I don't think we've got such a burning need to access the server that Brentai needs to install the newest server version today when, like you said, the mods we're using aren't even out yet, and there's likely to be another update tomorrow to correct the most egregious bugs this version introduced.

And yeah, the mapping tool was idly mentioned months ago (FAKE EDIT: a couple times), but nothing ever actually came of it. We got a few maps—including Google-style ones—but they've all been hand-generated.

I'm down with a head cold today (weakly dicking with my phone in front of the tv) but I'll have to do it tomorrow since I won't have access to my PC for a while after that.

Hey0's mod won't be updated until at least the 24th, so don't bother on that front.

Alternately, how hard would it be for me to download a local copy of bigshell? Friends from out of town are going to be here for the holidays, and they're bringing their single-player maps; I'd really like to show off what I've been doing, but 90% of my time and work in Minecraft went into this server.

Not terrible.

IF I have time tomorrow (still have to pack) the likely solution will be to finally set up a new admin.  It's probably not a stretch to tar up a gestalt while I'm at it.

Thanks, Brent. If circumstances don't work out, it won't be the end of the world, but I appreciate the help either way.

Disconnected by Server

Outdated Server!

EDIT: Also, the game's framerate has plummeted.

I deeply apologize for the lack of updates to the server.  I was asked to do it last night but ended up getting way too wrapped up in banging your mom.

I miiiiight be able to work some magic with my expensive miracle phone, but no promises. More news as it occurs.

Just singleplayer runs too slowly for me to bother with now, so an up-to-date multiplayer server isn't a huge priority for me.

It did indeed get fixed, and now there's a different error message when trying to connect to Zanzibarland.  Is the server just turned off because you have better things to do on Christmas then update it?

Long story short is that magic did not happen*, so SMP will be available late Monday-ish, unless of course I get home and immediately pass out (not unlikely).

* It is currently 12:22 AM on December 25.  This is not actually relevant.
