Given the impending rebirth of the world, I figure this is probably the time to officially put this sucker to rest so I can start clean on something new once we're all reincarnated in our glorious new bodies.

What happened?

I fell into a downward spiral of not having enough magnetite to summon my allies, and getting my ass handed to me while farming up magnetite because human characters alone are far from the powerhouses they were in SMT1. Even grinding levels is no help; if I couldn't afford my current roster, getting stronger allies certainly would do nothing to solve that problem. I tried forging ahead, I tried backtracking, and all I found were varying amounts of tedium and frustration. Eventually I decided to take a break before I got burnt out, but... clearly I had passed that point already.

I tried getting back into it a few times, but all that accomplished was to remind me why I stopped. I'm not ruling out powering through and completing it one day, even if only to conclude Hawke's story and move on further down the series, but I do believe that would require my sleep/health situation to improve to where I'm comfortable with spending my leisure time on a game that I've more or less stopped enjoying on its own terms. I have been feeling the LP itch lately and I got a few prospects in mind, but that is it for now.

So! Thanks for following me on this while it lasted, sorry it took so long to take it behind the barn. And to end on the highest possible note (thanks the Mothraest of all Mothras), LET'S DANCIN'!!

Old-and-busted has its own special kind of charm, but I'm legitimately curious about any eventual New Hotness. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff out there that would make us look back and think "how did we ever manage without this". Not that I have any suggestions though, I know basically nothing about forum software.

Or, hmm. Expand them. By their nature, the dungeons in these games are both unique and disposable; they are in a special position to let most of them possibly become "the one that got away". But by and large, you're not allowed to permanently fail them. The games (or at least, those I've played) just don't let you booch up a delve entirely, outside of the death->reload loop. Your character's adventures are a nigh-uninterrupted string of victories punctuated by the occasional "I'm not tooled up for this one, maybe I'll come back later". Consequently, "turning back and escaping with your life" is the closest you can get to an actual failure state, whereas it should be a thrill and its own kind of victory.

What I'm saying is, instead of having instances of "I fell down this spike pit trap, guess I'll have to hoof it back up to the main level", there should be instances of "I didn't notice this pressure plate, now the tunnels have caved in, I can't get to the boss chest and I need to find an alternate exit and OH SHIT FIVE TROLLS RUN RUN RUN". Heck, put those instances in major quest lines. "Welp, guess this guy ain't making it to archmage."

Maybe I should try my hand at Skyrim modding.

Any variation on a game placing a reward on a punishment path.



If you succesfully beat the obstacle, either you have to backtrack, or leave a resource behind. Even if this is a tutorial and the chest contains a potion to heal the spike damage, why not give a skilled player a proper reward for making the jump?

Oh, and along that same line of thought, when a punishment path leading backwards appears as an exploration option before the obstacle is encountered (but is actually a waste of time).



Elder Scrolls dungeons feel like they do both a lot but it's not like they have a monopoly on that crap.

That sort of happens in 100 World Story and Dokapon Kingdom. Those have more in common with Mario Party than with Baldur's Gate, but there are independant NPC players with basic AI who compete/cooperate at will with other players for the same objectives and by the exact same rules.

Hmm, not exactly what I was attempting to do but it might be the next best thing, good idea.

My original plan was to have a cylinder of orange fudge and a cylinder of cream sugar, cut each in half lengthwise, slice them into semi-circular pieces, then put the pieces back together to form stacks, alternating sugar and fudge; I was doing it for gifts and figured a neat presentation was in order. I ended up just doing regular old cubes, but I'm sure the folks'll enjoy it all the same.

In case you were wondering, making chocolate fudge squares but replacing the vanilla extract with orange extract COMPLETELY WORKS AND IS DELICIOUS BEYOND MORTAL RECKONING. (16 ounces of semi sweet chocolate chopped into small bits, 300ml of sweetened condensed milk, microwave a minute or two until it begins to melt, stir, add 1 teaspoon of extract, stir some more, pour into pan, chill until set)

On the other hand, trying to pour it down a roll of parchment paper inside a paper towel tube in order to make neat circular pieces is surprisingly difficult and not worth the effort.

To my own surprise, I think I'm gonna have to give top honors to the Shadow Warrior remake. I love a good single-player FPS campaign (to the point where I legitimately think a shooter that has no multiplayer should proudly mention it as a back-of-the-box bullet point), and I'm a sucker for fun first-person melee combat, so it really was a match made in heaven. On top of that the visual design is amazing, its upgrade system doesn't feel like it's forcing you to decide what you'll never be able to do (unlike most upgrades systems out there), there are actual secret areas (GASP!), and I don't know how Flying Wild Hog did it but they managed to make Lo Wang into a likeable character.

Runner-ups would be Rogue Legacy, Völgarr the Viking, and One Way Heroics. The Wolf Among Us is off to a good start, but given what it is I think it'd qualify more for 2014, assuming this isn't where Telltale decides to drop the ball.

If we include older games that I've discovered this year, I think I have to mention Saint's Row III (got it in a Humble Bundle; I assume IV would make my list but I'm still on Windows XP), Crusader Kings II, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia.
