Katawa Shoujo

OK, did I miss the thread or something? I find it really hard to believe no one here has been playing this game.

Every single one of my other internet friends picked this up recently.
What's with the sudden burst in popularity?

It was just officially released at the beginning of this month. Also, it's free.

At it's most basic, it's a Japanese-style visual novel (yes, of the erotic variety) centered around a school specifically for disabled children. Each of the courtable girls, and the protagonist, has some sort of physical ailment. Icing on the cake? It was made by mooks on 4chan.

The most shocking thing about this game is that it completely defies expectations; where you might expect to find degenerate smut, fetishizing disabilities for a wank's sake, you instead find a grounded, respectful story, competently written and strangely compelling. There are sex scenes, yes, and while they adhere to what you'd expect from something like this (I assume; this is my first foray into the genre) they actually play into the narrative in meaningful ways.

I don't think it's for everyone. I'm predisposed to visual novels thanks to Hotel Dusk, Phoenix Wright, 999 and whatever, but  the more I play it the more I think it's worth checking out.

The game was released relatively recently (January 4), and had a decent amount of press (reddit, metafilter, SA, besides traditional gaming channels) for such a niche genre. I think at least one of the reasons it's become so popular has to do with the initial shock value of seducing physically disabled girls. I feel most of the people initially playing were expecting a childish, cripple themed sex romp, but were surprised and delighted by the maturity in which the subject matter was handled (I feel a well executed subversion of expectations is one of the best ways to engage the audience's attention to a more active experience, from a passive acceptance of what's expected.)  This led to the game spreading through much word of mouth.

Ah. I've known about the game for a while now but was unaware it was in beta.
I've heard nothing but good things about it and while probably end up giving it a try but wasn't sure why everyone's been talking about it these last three weeks. That would explain it.

Worth mentioning that there's a "disable adult scenes" toggle.

Also, Kenji's dialog is pretty good.

You could definiately go without the ero scenes for Hanako. while she's a beautiful scarred angel, it is rpobably the most awkward and awful sex scene in an eroge ever. This serves the plot extremely well, but still.

If you turn off the adult scenes for Lily though, I still recognize you even without the pencil mustache... HITLER!!
