I think every for every ten updates Notch puts out, there has to be one that breaks leaves.

Leaves work and have always worked, just... very, very slowly.

they don't disintegrate at all anymore as far as i can tell

Used to be they would break down nearly totally over a period of ~8 minutes or something?

Oh they still do, it's just more like 8 updates instead of 8 minutes now.

... and I'm getting "outdated client errors" so it looks like it's time to update the server. Again.
Edit: blog post confirms the update.

I kept a tree farm in Bigshell. The biomes patch definitely stopped leaves dropping. I had to do it manually. IT WAS TERRIBL

What you can do for tree farming is just use a flint and steel to set the leaves on fire. Then you only need to take care of any eternally burning levitating stragglers.

The problem with that is you don't get any saplings.

Item Idea if the item ever gets implemented:

Headlamp: Helmet (any material) + Lantern/torch

The uses are obvious.

Minecraft will reach Beta status on December 20th, 2010.

(...)

We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.

Huh. I suppose that means we're going to see things like the Halloween update being paid DLC in the future. Not like it matters to me at this point, of course.

If nothing else, this is an even bigger "if you're ever going to buy it, buy it now" incentive than just the lower price of the alpha.

EDIT:

From twitter:
Quote from: notch
We're taking it out because it scares both lawyers and the board.
Quote from: some dude
So people who buy accounts after the beta hve to pay for updates, but im free for life because I paid for it in alpha?
Quote from: notch
They MIGHT have to pay, we don't know yet. We're changing it because the promise is scary. But you're safe.

There's a contraption on the server that resembles a monster killer / item generator, but it doesn't work. Did it used to work? Did I break it by placing torches?

Where did we get three stacks of gold block? That's 1,728 gold ore. You'd have to mine for 58 hours and furnace for another 5 hours, spending 218 coal. You'd have to mine 485,396 blocks and go through 473 diamond picks to do it.

It's probably duped.

if you mean the giant square tower thing, it only works when you stand next to it because that's how monster spawning works. You have to sit at the exit of it to farm stuff.

and yeah I don't remember who I as talking to about it but someone definitely said they duped that gold.

That was me.  I envisioned a grand, gold road as an entrance to the main building, but somebody built a staircase instead.

I also built both monster killing contraptions.  The one by the spawn sucks, but there's a far more successful one to the east that reaches the sky and has several layers and took me forever to build and I probably still need to get in there and make it better at killing spiders.

You'd have to mine 485,396 blocks and go through 473 diamond picks to do it.

Even if someone personally mined all the gold, they could still do it with a single pick using the repair-by-dropping exploit.

I'm assuming both that and duping will be fixed by server-side inventory next week, but we'll see.

(With all the abuses still possible, I think we should make a new map once notch implements in-server hell traveling along with server-side inventory)
