Yay for Castlevania.  Can we topic split now?

Castlevania is in serious danger of collapsing under the weight of its own recurring themes, if it hasn't already.

Seriously people, you don't have to put Fleamen and Medusa Heads and fucking birds in EVERY FUCKING CASTLEVANIA GAME YOU MAKE. We are young, we can handle novelty.

I forget, is this another one of those Wii fighting games where everybody has a cool weapon and it doesn't use the Wiimote?

From the looks of it yes, its got cool little animations and super attacks though, but it all looks like some high grade japanimation.

Order of Ecclesia is not bad from what I've seen so far. It's almost not a Castlevania game: There's nearly none of the old standbys in sight, except for a few of the enemies.

The dual-wield system would be much more useful if you weren't equipping the same weapon in both hands anyway for the combo power.

A nitpick is that one of the bosses has a stage where it's fucking -invulnerable- despite you hitting it and HP flying off: You need to use a room gimmick to finish the asshole. I should start writing a book on cardinal sins of game design:

#1 (Fundamental Rule of Gaming) - What the player doesn't see doesn't exist.
#1.1 - If the enemy isn't taking damage, don't make it look like he is.
#2.1 (Megaman Charge Shot Rule) - Don't add a gimmick to the game that works by making another gimmick useless.

Using boss weapons.

(Mega Man X sort of compensates by making the boss weapons also chargeable.)

 Oh, I just thought that was a result of lots of boss weapons being useless. Silly me.

Hm. For some reason I suddenly feel like I should see if command mission is any good. Maybe a turn-based structure could make boss weapons worthwhile again.
Megaman as a robot mage-type? It could work.

EDIT:

Classic probably wouldn't use boss weapons even if they were useful, simply because he's an item hoarder. He's gotta quit that.

If you don't use the Metal Blade as your default option in MM2, you're doing it wrong.

Unfortunately, Command Mission doesn't really bring boss weapons into play other than why are you still showing up in games Axl using his copy ability to duplicate a boss' big (non-)elemental (still just Fire, Ice/Water and Lightning!) attack.

It's a pretty vanilla RPG all things considered, but I'm guessing it was more of an experiment on the X7 production team's part than anything.  There's a lot they could do with it if they decided to make sequel though.  While I'm dreaming, I would like a new Breath of Fire game that is a mixture of 3 (I love the dragon gene system goddamn) and 4 (because I loved the visuals) while forgetting Dragon Quarter exists.

Edit: Contributing to the topic!  I'm looking forward to The Last Remnant next month and Valkyria Chronicles so I finally have something to play on my PS3 that isn't MGS4.

So, where does Ecclesia fall in the overarching timeline?

Order of Ecclesia is mid-1800s, Bloodlines is 1920.
