Title: THE MOST IMPORTANT CARTOON EVER MADE
Post by: Pacobird on March 01, 2011, 05:07:56 AM
just checking in to make sure you guys aren't watching that new my little pony show

because it has come to my attention that it has kind of become, how do you say, "a thing" on the internet and seriously

seriously

I am aware of its thinginess but still cannot fathom why I should care.

I'm trying to figure out how this is any different from the last time (http://brontoforum.us/index.php?topic=4437.0) nerds and hipsters adopted a show ostensibly aimed at children. Not that I'm trying to slight that show or this one; I just don't see why one of these would be okay while the other is "seriously"
Title: Re: ok so

because it's for girls
Title: Re: ok so
Post by: Pacobird on March 01, 2011, 06:34:02 AM
not just girls but my little pony

i mean there was some weird shit going down with powerpuff girls and avatar too

i can respect that those were objectively good children's shows and avatar in particular has a pretty cohesive narrative whose one-shot morals are actually well-integrated, features unusually strong and positive female leads, and makes the clever choice of nudging the child audience to most closely identify with the character without super powers

if i had a kid i would watch avatar and powerpuff girls with that kid and probably not want to kill myself

but let us not kid ourselves sirs there was some pretty weird and gross shit going down with avatar and powerpuff girls and i am seeing The Signs

i guess what i am trying to say is a little self-consciousness is okay sometimes and is in fact part of being an adult

Wasn't My Little Pony already a Hipster Thing at some point anyway?

Also, this is literally the first I've heard that they're remaking that show. Man, next thing you know, the Care Bears will come back.
Title: Re: ok so
Post by: Beat Bandit on March 01, 2011, 07:19:48 AM
Powerpuff Girls was legitimately a good show 50-70% of the time. If Neo Ponies is as enjoyable I would watch it with zero issue.

The problem is I'm pretty sure it's not and the majority of /b/ trolls just have gender role issues and try to cover it up with SO FAHNNY JOKE and then the rest of the internet goes along with it.
Title: Re: ok so
Post by: Brentai on March 01, 2011, 07:47:13 AM
See I stopped watching Powerpuff Girls about halfway through the first season, not because it wasn't good, and not really because I wasn't the target audience, but because there was nothing really there to interest me and I had better shit to do.

I watched Avatar all the way through multiple times because I thought it was fantastic and interesting despite not being the "target audience" (I'm not sure I believe this though - Avatar was fantastic and interesting because it was more than just a show for kids).

I haven't seen MLP but I suspect it's worth watching if you're:
1. A little girl.
2. Just really into horses.
3. Bored.
4. Friends with any of the above, or with
5. A person who finds small, doe-eyed, pastel-colored horses sexually attractive.

In the interest of full disclosure: if a tiny blue mare named Sparklebutt batted her lashes, assured me I wouldn't get a disease and lifted her tail... why the fuck not, I've probably thought about worse.

Like Blossom in high-heeled leather boots and nothing else.

The reason it can be socially acceptable for older people to watch PPG:

Powerpuff Girls - Big Lebowski (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxINUu8AvMo#)

I don't know if the same can be said for MLP. The obsession around the internet disturbs me.

As a man of my "geeky" interests, I am used to some ridicule about my hobbies. When it comes to some things, I have to sit down and weigh whether or not the subect is good enough for me to endure the ridicule I'll get for it.
DnD: Yes.
Avatar: Yes.
Comic books: Yes and no
MLP? Not at all. That show would have to be GOD TIER to make it worth watching. And the clips I have seen and the fanbase I'm encountered assured me that it is not.

Unless someone on here can convince me this is the best show since color TV was invented, I shall stay far, far, FAR away from MLP.

And so help me if one of you starts saying "everypony" or "brony" or "brohoof here" or any of that shit.

Title: Re: ok so
Post by: Brentai on March 01, 2011, 04:51:07 PM
I've said a lot in channel, but in case you missed it, the two pilot eps are fun to watch once you get over your irrational sense of shame and accept that this is basically just Sailor Moon with horses.

The next ep after that was such a staggeringly formulaic syrupy Aesop that it hurt my head, and I suspect the rest of the episodes are like the third.

Also Rainbow Dash is everybody's favorite because she's basically just a boy that might have a vagina somewhere.

Yeah, but they get better after that. Applejack is kind of boring, you see.

Pfft. Rarity is the best one. Followed by Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Twilight Sparkle, THEN Rainbow Dash. And then Applejack.

Hey, don't look at me.  I was just trying to do some field research for you guys and then this douchebag started wearing his Trapper-Keeper trampstamp on his sleeve.

...

I'm probably the last person to realize this, but all My Little Ponies have their little star-and-rainbow-and-girly-shit insignias on the exact spot where you would normally brand a horse.  I... don't know what the implications of that are.

I think the Robot Unicorn Attack (http://games.adultswim.com/robot-unicorn-attack-twitchy-online-game.html) game softened 4chan to the idea of rainbow horses. A few people started posting My Little Pony threads a couple of months ago. I guess this started a chain reaction of people who couldn't believe anyone was genuinely watching MLP, watched an episode or two to see what the fuss was about, found it was more entertaining than the insipid girly crap normally expected of My Little Pony, and got swept up in the fad.

Or, My Little Pony is 2011's Ron Paul.

Edit: There are a couple of other reasons why the show might appeal to internet people. The main character is a bookish nerd, who is also a high-level wizard. The second episode is essentially The Hobbit. Two characters have a convenient resemblance to the main characters from one of the season's most popular anime (http://imgur.com/a/u3YK2), Panty & Stocking. Anime fans have already been watching shows with a primarily female cast for a while now, so a half-decently written cartoon isn't much of a stretch.

It's an objectively good show. The worst thing you can say about it is that the first two episodes were produced with a marketing executive in mind to get the OK to make every other episode.

The first two episodes are not at all indicative of the series as a whole.

First two episodes: Sailor Moon, but horses
Every other episode: Azumanga Daioh, but horses

Yeah, the first two episodes are how you pitch a series.  The rest of it is how you run an awesome character-driven series.

To be fair, Q probably would manifest in Equestria as Discord and fuck with everything just for laughs, while at the same time subtly teaching the residents a valuable lesson. That's basically what he does.

I mean, shit, Discord even does the "snaps fingers, vanishes in flash of light" thing a few times.

I just wish he had turned all the ponies into Robin Hood characters.

Well I mean, I expect that from any kind of mainstream cartoon aimed at kids and early teens where their first tentative steps in sexualizing the opposite gender are being drawn from female characters they feel like they know. I pray to god this is why Sonic wankdom is so staggeringly massive. A not insignificant number of good male artists I follow have admitted that the sole motivation for their early attempts at seriously drawing the human figure were born from the mindless want to make pornography. It's weird but if you think about it, when you're that young, there's not a ton of other things that really command your attention/discipline quite the same. This is probably why there's so much of it.

With My Little Pony, I really feel like most of the rule 34 output has been trolling. It just seems like there's no way most people could get past the fact that these are, like, horses, no matter how much they liked the characters themselves. Even with furries they make them human-like first.

Honestly, what genuinely bothers me is stuff like Cupcakes up there. I guess the concept is sort of funny in how a pink pony named Pinkie Pie would turn out to be the most sadistic monster ever to walk the earth, but you hit that point in the video where the creator spent the time to accurately create a scene where Rainbow Dash's intestines are being pulled out on a torture rack and like... they wrap it in a video with a look that most little girls looking for MLP videos are going to fall for. How exactly is this not a genuinely, unironically awful thing for someone to do?

I'd say it made me wonder if other artists these days are getting their start with the driving motivation of being good trolls and pleasing the 4chan crowd, but I just know this was done by a dude in his mid-30s.

Frankie – Madame Foster's 22-year-old granddaughter, addressed as "Miss Frances" by Mr. Herriman. Frankie is the caregiver at Foster's and helps keep everything in order. In spite of Mr. Herriman's fussiness and fixation with rules and cleanliness, having to take care of everyone and everything in the house, and Bloo's mischief-making (all of which cause her tremendous stress), she is usually very friendly and easy-going. According to her driver's license, she was born on July 25, 1984. She is voiced by Grey DeLisle.

I want to point out that the one-paragraph frankie bio on wikipedia mentions her age twice despite that information not being in any way relevant to the show as a whole or even the rest of the entry

Well, since I have creative drive but no ability, I an a dude that enjoys thinking about art and I actually have long thought there was an interesting article to be written on the Rule 34 phenomenon in general, viewed as a really crass and brazen example of art being transgressive and expressive of the individual over culture; i.e., on one level it's just really funny, but if somebody wants to express sexual longings through writing harry potter slash fanfiction and if they can, why shouldn't they?  What is so sacrosanct about crassly commercial characters that we SHOULDN'T pretend they fuck?

I, however, am not the man to write this article.

The Ecchi-Attack dudes are pretty sure that Marceline the Vampire Queen and of course Lumpy Space Princess will be the sexual awakening of the next generation.

I think you guys are forgetting that the true power of the internet is the ability to unite and share like-minded sentiments at an accelerated pace entirely unknown of in History.

I like to imagine that from the dawn of time, mankind has been a ridiculously horny lot. People just had significant less free time and it's much harder to find lasting evidence of a pair of fine tits drawn on a papyrus sheet since a lot of those faceless dudes were probably dying of easily treatable things or being forced into slavery/wars. But I bet they did it, or they talked about it all the time like we do now. Like I'm imagining people trying to rule 63 Grendel and Beowulf or dudes talking about how hot the Wife of Bath was. Maybe a primitive hunter couldn't help but admire the elegant grace and poise of a cheetah he killed with a spear.

How many dudes jacked off to the thought of how dead is too dead to fuck Juliette? Let's get cracking, historians.

There's also a strong argument that maybe all these sentiments existed but they were kept under control by a good healthy dose of religious shame, since we also do live now in a nice perfect storm of open values, loose authority and The Internet.

APPLE was mocking a specific trait of the actual character that always seems a bit off (I'm probably biased since I can't eat a single apple anymore, but really the APPLE EVERYTHING stuff is sort of crazy).  DRESS was just sort of lowbrow and mean.

I'm not entirely sure if the thing wasn't supposed to be mocking itself.  The ending and the little "disclaimer" at the end seem to be taking a shot at how banal this sort of thing really is.  I can imagine too many people drawing a line between the sort of nasty tone of the last two and Cupcakes and just going, "Fuck, what, do you people want Cupcakes?  Here's your fucking Cupcakes."

Also it pisses me off that I can say Cupcakes and people will know what I'm talking about.

This is also more like what an actual hat a cowboy would wear would look like. Cowboys weren't nearly as Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as movies would lead you to believe.

Actually I haven't been able to find a photograph of a cowboy or cowboy hat with the cleft after several pages of GIS*, only cartoon ones. I'm beginning to think it might be visual shorthand for wear and tear.

*: The closest thing I've seen is...
...which ain't a cleft so much as it is two rolled-up sections of the brim.
Title: Re: THE MOST IMPORTANT CARTOON EVER MADE
Post by: Brentai on February 07, 2012, 08:11:36 PM
Pretty sure it's artistic license.  Hats with flat-brimmed fronts tend to look bad on screen for a number of reasons (mainly it limits the number of angles you can actually see someone's face at), so actors tend to curl the front either up or down and animators just go ahead and cock up hats with an concave or missing front.  In practice I don't think there are any hat designs that actually come like that that anybody cares about.

(Applejack herself doesn't have to worry about that because the hat is sort of oddly placed on the back of her head anyway, but the sharp little points add a little bit of flare to the design and this is a SHOW ABOUT PONIES FOR GIRLS so yeah that wins.)

Okay, now that I'm actually watching more of this stuff I think I've cracked the code.  Friendship is Magic is not a show for little girls, despite its pedigree* and the fact that it's still about vain little ponies.  Friendship is Magic is a show developed and aimed at autistic children.  Its main character is an autist who claims to literally not know what friendship is and only understands social interactions through what she's read in a book.  At the end of every episode she unveils some revelatory moral that's kind of obvious to everyone else, but not its target audience really.  The whole thing is designed to attract and to teach children who lack natural social ability.

And the thing about children who lack social ability is that they aren't really that different from adults who lack social ability.

So if you're a grown male who likes Friendship is Magic and can't figure out why and are worried that you're secretly an asshole who keeps playing games for girls, take heart!  Friendship is Magic appeals to you because Friendship is Magic is for you!  You are the one who identifies with this cute gothy little pony and her ridiculous bullshit social issues!  You are the one who secretly needs and appreciates all the lessons on friendship and dealing with people that you're getting from this talking cartoon horse!  You are vicariously living out this fantasy of being shipped off a new town as a spiteful loner and suddenly being trounced upon by five fiercely loyal, interesting and talented friends who are determined to put up with your goofy bullshit and teach you to be normal!  You crave the message embedded deeply and not-so-deeply within Friendship is Magic, and that's perfectly fine, because let's face it, you really fucking need it.

Also you probably want to make horrible man-pony or woman-pony babies with Rainbow Dash and frankly I don't blame you.

* NOT intended.

She doesn't have the signature eyes, they excised her name, and frankly the new voice sounds awful.  It's awkward and unnatural-sounding, in a show that's generally been known for pretty natural voice acting.

And the real voice didn't sound like someone doing a mocking voice, anyways.

I dunno. I agree with DN. Her new voice is way better and she's still fairly cross-eyed. Just not enough that mothers buying toys for their little girls will pause and wonder why she looks "special."
Derpy is an awful name, by the way. I don't like they gave her the name and then took it away but that's showbiz.
(Shut up. I know fans gave her the name but it was up to the show to actually give her a name. It's the fans fault for choosing a slightly offensive term and then latching on to her like she's the Mare Messiah.)

And the real voice didn't sound like someone doing a mocking voice, anyways.

That's pretty interesting, TA.

I remember it meaning someone was acting like an idiot, by nature of not thinking it through, but not really mentally retarded though.

So I think the MODERN VISION OF THE DERP is a shot at the mentally retarded

I wonder if any part of the problem here was someone in Hasbro realizing there could be potential legal problems for letting the internet name your things.
Or just problems in general. Either way, anything that divorces the horrific subculture known as "bronies" from the show itself is good in my book. It's fine you're a fan of a snappy, well-written show. It's not fine when you make homestuck fans look sane.

This is unlikely, really. The amount of money that comes from adult collectors is small in comparison to children, but we're still talking like 20% depending on the IP. Hasbro owns GI-JOE, Transformers, and the rights to make toys for Marvel and fucking *Star Wars.* They have a lot of experience in how to market a show and toys for children while still pleasing the adult collector fanbase. It's just... well. I bet they were thrown for a loop with the brony explosion and are still puzzling out how to make it work with for MLP. Perhaps you're not that far off in retrospect though. Bronies are already buying girly toys as merch, maybe it's best just to leave shit the fuck alone.

You'd think at the least Hasbro would see the profit in marketing one grey pony as Derpy and raking in an entire new demographic. At the worst, they'd make barrels of cash until some external controversy made them stop, making Derpy a collectors thing.

I don't pretend to understand toy marketing, but isn't this the entire reason the show exists? Fostering demand for this kind of thing?

Not the best plan. You run the risk of alienating the adult fanbase by splitting off products that are obviously intended for them, implying that they should be cordoned away from the rest of the franchise. Also, lessening potential sales of the rest of your product because it exists in two different locations. You see, there are less adult fans than children, but adults buy much more. The second that collectors hear that Wave 3 has hit stores in their area, they will drive down to Wal-Mart, buy all the new things introduced in that wave, and maybe check back every few weeks if there were shortpacked toys. There's also the issue with creating brand confusion.

Hasbro has created lines aimed at collectors before like the Transformer Alternators, but they were always sold beside other toys from the same franchise. Alternators themselves didn't do so well, but it was more due to a lack of mold variety at the line's launch creating shelves clogged with the same one or two products that everyone already had. And to be frank, I can't really see how you would do the Alternator treatment with MLP.

OK, so.

Bronies.

Yep.

Why? Why why why why why why why why why why why blah blah blah blah blah.

Let's start with some facts:

1. The show is good.

2. The show is legitimately funny for adults.

3. You can like the show and not be a "brony."

4. All shows of any merit will have a dedicated, borderline (or beyond the line) obsessive fanbase.

So, those facts might be enough to shed some light on why Bronies exist. But still, you say, why why why why why? A bunch of screaming faggots in their late 20s and 30s obsessing about giant transforming laser robots, while pathetic, at least makes sense, because childhood and neeeeeeeeeeeeerds. (Please note that I do not think adult transformers fans are pathetic. I was using my hypothetical person voice.)

OK, I'm going to do my best to address this. The following is not fact like the above, but merely my opinion and insight into human nature.

Now, I watch and enjoy the show. I am not a brony, or whatever female version of that word is currently being used this week on 4chan. I'm a 30 year old girl/woman who used to watch and collect MLP in the 80s when I was the target audience. Does that make it less weird for you that I watch and enjoy the show? Probably not. Again, I refer to fact 1 and 2 if you are still confused.

Alright, so, that's me. But why are MALES ARRGHHH MANLY MEN MUSCLES BACON LEATHER who are my age watching and enjoying the show? Why are there "Bronies"?

Again, facts 1 through 4. But lets go a bit deeper. I am not a man, but I am a student of the human condition, and what I have observed about men is this:

Men are told to man the fuck up. Don't cry, don't have feelings, don't do anything except RARRGH BACON LEATHER. It's a truism that a man angry is usually experiencing the exact same emotions a woman who is upset/crying is. They've just been taught and conditioned to express those feelings in a safe "man" way. Breaking down and crying, as a man, is unacceptable. You are a man. You cannot have feelings that are not related to anger. So a man channels his sadness or upset into rage. I'm not saying women don't get angry, of course. I'm only saying a man will, by default, channel sadness or being upset into anger instead of tears because he has been trained since age 4 that crying is not OK for men.

This is not news to anyone here, I'm sure. You all went through it.

You've been conditioned to be a "man" the same way that I, and other women were conditioned to be a "lady" (which I'm not going to get into right now, because it's not topical) and again, not news.

So then here comes this little bundle of pure candy. MLP is like pure, unrefined childhood. It represents, to a lot of people (men), a simpler time, a time before they had to act and be a certain way, a time when it was OK for them to play with girl toys or hug their friends or paint their nails if they wanted to. MLP appeals to the simple nature of love, togetherness and fun in all of us. It appeals especially strongly to males because they have been forced to suppress these urges.

Of course, all of that may just be tl;dr to you, in which case, AGAIN, I direct your attention to facts 1 through 4.

What keeps confusing me is the constant assertion that the show itself is something more than it actually is.  It'd be disingenuous for me to say that adults can't enjoy it, but all its fans keep bringing up this supposed awesome writing for adults and I don't really get that.  I eventually ended up watching the entire first season just to get all the jokes but at no point did I see where it's ever not just a preachy-ass cartoon for preteen girls.

Brent: You're over-thinking the whole "It was made by people who have done quality cartoon work before", which is generally reason enough to give a show like MLP the nod to quality it deserves. You're probably sniffing around a suspicion that the sort of people who REALLY INSIST THAT THIS WRITING IS SO GOD DAMN GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD are also leaving off other thoughts like "unlike every other cartoon released in the last ten years, none of which I have actually watched and this one only hit me by memetic spreading."

There's an easy line of quality between say, MLP(Good) and Johnny Test(whyyyyyy) where you can just look at MLP and nod your head. This is a pretty good cartoon, like Samurai Jack or Foster's or Dexter's Lab or Powerpuff Girls. It's just ridiculous when apparently the other good cartoons not made by Faust and McCracken don't exist because jaded fuckers.

Friday: Your theory is sound but I think there's a hiccup. Men may be trained to not cry from a young age, but a significant number of Bronies are also the sort of people who never actually took to machismo and will literally throw temper tantrums over not being able to play a video game. I think that somewhere along the line, their Manliness Training fell apart and maybe something like MLP split that open like a dam with a crack in it just by applying a little pressure. It might also be an issue of attention: these same bronies would be waifuing up a Mass Effect forum somewhere if MLP hadn't spread to them first.

The sheer random strength of the meme and Geek Social Fallacies (http://www.plausiblydeniable.com/opinion/gsf.html) creates an incredibly comfortable safe zone for a Brony with a huge number of members.

I think Doom sorta has it, but also in the non-nerd fans, I see a segment that also is borderline not-nerd-at-all but more in with the Irony-is-best-humour crowd.

These are the men who see a decent cartoon which is also simultaneously the living embodiment of everything unmanly dun dun dunnnnnn. So it attracts them. In a way this is kind of positive, in the sense that these are people who are either saying "I am so comfortable with my masculinity that I can watch this shows and tell you that I do it" or who simply love throwing the traditional need to be RARWRWGGGRRR LEATHER BACON STEAKS under the bus, smirking while they do it because it pisses off the peers/parents/relatives/authority figures who nag them to fit age and gender-norms rebellion will always be cool, man.

I think the kind of folks Doom mentioned are more common (and those are the more creepy ones), but the not-hipsters are a factor too. And the fact that multiple demographics are getting different things out of this adds to the self-reinforcing popularity of the show (i.e. "It's not just my demographic that likes it", etc.).

Brent: You're over-thinking the whole "It was made by people who have done quality cartoon work before", which is generally reason enough to give a show like MLP the nod to quality it deserves.

I guess I'm underthinking it?  I know and don't care who made it.  If I were to actually consider it I'd have to scratch my head - PPG, Foster's, and Samurai Jack didn't really come off sounding like a toy commercial.

That of course would last for about a second before I remembered that MLP is a toy commercial, which explains most why it sounds so hollow to me.  Kinda-sorta explains the following too, since having an ensemble cast seems to be cruise-control for fanbase (most Bronies seem to have been either or both MSPA and Bleach fans at some point.  I AM AWARE OF MY AVATAR.)

Ensemble cast is 100% cruise control for fanbase. Touhou is pretty much nothing but a series of arcade shooters with barely any dialogue that provide a steady stream of blank slate new characters for fans to imprint as they will.

My friend—let's call him "Ensign Harry Kim"—started watching MLP earlier this year. Ensign Kim doesn't get out much; he's perennially unemployed, ostracized from most of his family and previous friends, and barely skates by on the proceeds of plasma donation. I don't blame him for wanting to share his interest with me. I get that: when you're really excited and enthusiastic about something, you want to share that with your friends, even against your better judgment; even over their protests that they have no interest in this. Don't get me wrong; I've enjoyed the episodes I've seen, but I don't want to be coerced to watch more, much less read through all this MLP fanfiction you've downloaded. Hell, I'm still trying to sort through all the "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" fanfic, 3.5 D&D character builds, and these furry homoerotic short stories you wrote. I don't have time for this.

Long story short, I think at least a part of the brony phenomenon is that "Friendship is Magic" is a hall-pass for gamer-identifying guys to indulge their whimsical side, but it looks like you guys have established that already.

I always wonder how much of this is lawyers sort of forced at lawpoint to act against their employers' best interests.  We know a popular pony fighting game is, despite its content, really kind of a good thing for the brand, but there's also a lot of terrible, badly thought out text in the legal definition of copyright that says that when someone even tangentially profits off a fan work, such as by getting positive word of mouth, you have to shut them down or risk losing your claim.  I don't know the full details but my feeling is the real blame should go to our back-asswards copyright system and not any actual individuals, as per usual.
Title: Re: THE MOST IMPORTANT CARTOON EVER MADE
Post by: Royal☭ on February 09, 2013, 03:08:49 PM
The "You have to shut them down" rule applies to trademark, not copyright. My guess is that Hasbro may be planning a console Pony game and didn't want this hanging around. Video games kind of have this weird place in fanart. They shouldn't really be seen as distinct from artwork or written fiction, but they constantly get the cease and desists that other works don't. And that's before you get into the nebulous relationships that companies have with fan communities in the first place. (Anyone remember if Fox tried to remove all fan works from the web about X-Files?)

Twilight: Dash, we've got more important things to worry about! Like homework, and whether or not we'll get into good colleges, and then get good jobs, and then become President, and then --

Rarity: Yeah, and, like, clothes and getting married to super stylish boys!

Applejack: Rarity, you are so dumb.

Fluttershy: ohmygosh look at this super cute picture of a kitty!

Dash: Fluttershy, that's like the hundredth cat you've shown us in the last thirty seconds.

Fluttershy: ohmygosh look at this super cute picture of a puppy yawning!

Twilight: oh no! That weird emo goth kid Nightmare Moon is coming this way!

Afraid not. It seems the southern = Osaka meme hasn't made it to Japan yet.

Twilight Sparkle is Miyuki Sawashiro (Puchiko from Di Gi Charat, Shinku from Rozen Maiden, 40 other characters who sound like Shinku from Rozen Maiden).

Fluttershy is Emiri Katou (Kagami from Lucky Star, Kyubey from Madoka).

They're airing it both in the morning for kids, and late at night for "big kids". Japan's expecting bronies.

I know a couple who named their daughter after a Harry Potter character.

I feel like that's not so bad, comparatively.

I feel like the ultimate irony is that "Pinkamena" is a name with negative significance in the context of the show (and stupidly worse significance within the fandom).

That depends on the character.

So is there anything to that image other than 'reddit pony', or is that the joke?

This literally fucking happened.

CONTEXT(or at least what I've heard of it on the internet): the ponies are singing a song about how it's great to do nice things for people, while running around town doing nice things for people. They run into this brony pony, stare at him in silence for a moment, then immediately move on without doing anything nice for him.

So yes, MLP just dissed bronies.

What you have heard is wrong.  I checked the actual episode when I saw this.  It's during a song about some shit or whatever, the brony pony there gets a flower from a flower stand girl pony and she puts it in his fedora and admires his fedora and they laugh together.  Probably called her milady or something, and she didn't even friendzone him.

MLP just complimented bronies.

Reign Productions Premieres Tasha’s Pony Tales Trailer on AVN & ToplessRobot.com

Mainstream & Adult Media Work Together to Promote Adult Entertainment’s First Brony-Themed Movie!

Reign Productions, the studio owned by adult superstar Tasha Reign, premieres its soft trailer from Tasha’s Pony Tales on adult site AVN.com and mainstream media outlet ToplessRobot.com. Tasha’s Pony Tales marks the adult industry’s first-ever “Brony”-themed movie, with heightened interest from both adult and mainstream media.

“Tasha’s Pony Tales has been my most exciting project to date – with a fantastical, Brony-themed storyline, eye-popping effects, and use of my Reignbow Pony Plugs,” says Tasha. “Tasha’s Pony Tales is a unique fantasy adventure, and I’m beyond thrilled AVN and ToplessRobot are helping me promote my film to Bronies and Brony lovers everywhere!”

Shipping on DVD January 10 from Girlfriends Films, “Tasha’s Pony Tales” follows Tasha and three of her friends as they awake, after drinking a mysterious potion, in the enchanted world of Magic Pony Cloud Land. Anointed “anal plug pony princesses” by its people, they set out to conquer the men of the realm in an empowering adventure, chock full of mind-ing action and kink. The Barrett Blade-directed fantasy feature co-stars Rikki Six, Jessa Rhodes, Cameron Dee, Xander Corvus, Eric Masterson, Danny Mountain, Derrick Pierce, and Mr. Pete.

Adding to the movie’s unique charm is the use of Tasha’s Reignbow Pony Plugs, a whimsical line of handcrafted anal plugs with a luminous twist of Reignbow sparkle through their center and a vibrantly colored, flowing ponytail. Reign struck a partnership with novelty manufacturer Crystal Delights in September to create the innovative anal plugs, which serve in Tasha’s Pony Tales to transform its female cast into magical, fornicating fillies.
