This is my favorite website, not that you'd know it from my posting history, and yet this particular incarnation of the forums saw me demonstrate an Olympian aptitude for flakery and failure. Don't get me wrong: I've had some great times on here, too! Still, I can't wait to hear that ocarina melody.

Oh, awesome! I overlooked this before. The PM I just sent you still stands, though!

I bet somebody with some knowledge of and experience with PHP could make us a plugin to loosen username restrictions, among other things.

(brb, getting PHP knowledge & experience)

((never comes back))

I say we make 2014 the year of constantly trying to build a new home. A forum of nomadic architects.

You know, just to test whether or not we really like each other to stick together through several iterations of forum changes or that we're just too lazy to actually leave and find new friends.

Cool, I'll kick us off with an iteration that's intentionally wrong! The last thing we need is a brontoforumus subreddit, but now it exists regardless.

As much fun as it is to make sense of many-tiered quote-boxes charting the winding tendrils of conversations past to provide context to an individual response in one of our megathreads, I do think we'd benefit from some sort of threaded conversation system. What would be better is the option to switch between a threaded view and a sequential view, since the latter makes a lot more sense for LP threads and Werewolf (or other forum games).

Speaking of options, I'd be fine with the option to enable or disable infinite scroll, but if we had to commit to one or the other, I'd prefer no infinite.

I like karma; I'd like the ability to sort threads or posts by rating even better.

Ooh, another mysterious package has arrived!

I could never figure it out, but this turned out to be from Lyrai!

Behold the box, opened!

The contents: part 1! (Since I already had a copy of Kingdom Hearts, I may have included that in one of the packages I sent out...)

The contents: part 2!

Lyrai, you completely put my packages to shame, and I can only hope my fellas find something in those boxes that will entertain as much as your gifts will be entertaining me. I've got a lot of reading, watching, and playing to do!

Would you look at that! It's a package from Zaratustra!

I wonder what's inside?

It's a video card! Just what I always wanted!

I completely forgot that my "what would I like to receive" text included a line about maybe drawing a picture of an otter.

Dang, this box is packed.

Pop Rox, a lego figurine of a welder/Pyro, and some beagles puss, minus the mustache.

The Rapture of the Nerds and How To Live Safely In A Science Fictional Universe! Note the Halloween pumpkins stuck to them.

The box was completely full of 'em.

Issues of "Private Eye" and "Fantasy Chronicles"!

In addition to what I've already mentioned, the box contained a bunch of cards for a card-based version of D&D and a sliding labyrinth puzzle that looked a lot easier than it actually is; I've spent a lot of time banging my head against different puzzles on this thing!

I forgot to mention, there's a little wooden pyramid puzzle. Overall, this was quite the haul! Thanks, man!

OH SHIT THIS IS THE THREAD I SHOULD HAVE POSTED IN

Good evening, friends!

My Santa duties have gone somewhat neglected because, while I thought I'd assembled a worthy selection of gifts for my chaps, the remarkable contents of the two packages I received combined with the startling revelations contained within this thread made me begin to second-guess myself. I wound up scouring my residence for overlooked treasures, as well as the homes of a few overburdened friends. Tomorrow, I mail two packages to two neglected little brontoforumites, and then I shall post the great unveiling of the gifts which I have received from Zaratustra and someone who did a very good job of concealing their identity, as I couldn't find a note or name in the second package. So: thanks again, I'm sorry, and let's look forward to a happy Christmas post-script!

Aaron Forsythe's article on the Magic website today previews the new card frames they're introducing with Magic 2015. I feel like if they're going to introduce a design credit, that information should go in the black band across the bottom with the artist credit, but what do I know.

Only on MODO, not DotP.

Oh? Um, what does THIS button do, then?

I'll spare anyone who legitimately doesn't know the trouble: it lets you host or join multiplayer games through your platform's proprietary network—so, in this case, Steam.

Personally, I don't find multiplayer against other humans necessarily that much more fun or "fair" than against the computer, but mileage is variable.

The only game to come out this year that mattered is KE3. The game that came out this year that I played the most was Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The game that came out this year that had the most good times and also the fewest bad times was Saints Row 4. The game that came out this year that I kept hearing people talk about but never actually got around to playing was Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. The game that spent the most time on our TV this year was Fallout 3, which Julie decided she loves to watch me play, and it didn't even come out this year.

this is really happening

Man, ever since the battle at the end of Role Models, I've been waiting for Rudd to get the recognition and the quality parts he deserves. This is a good step in that direction.

Still just hoarding gold until open beta hits and I can plow through a bunch of arena fresh meat.

Why have I not been doing this.

We just had a tumor removed from our cat Angel's colon where it meets with the intestines. Test came back today, and the carcinoma has spread to her lymph nodes. She has maybe six months with no treatment, or six months to a year if she goes on chemo. One of the best indicators that a cat will respond well to treatment is body weight at the time they start, and of course hers is way under where it should be since she's been unable to digest food.

Welp. That's the end of that.

Today was a shit day.

The "is this or isn't this" slippery slope is a mug's game. Robb Sherwin's Cryptozookeeper demonstrates IF that uses graphics, and if you need actual animation in order to qualify, then arguably Jim Munroe's Guilded Youth—or (I can't believe I forgot about) Adam Thornton's Stiffy Makane: The Undiscovered Country—qualifies. Wherever you'd like to draw the line, you can show games on one side that meet your requirement and practically identical games on the other side which do not. It's not a useful distinction to draw.

Rather, the question of whether something's a video game should really be whether it's a player-driven or -directed experience; whether it's interactive. Although even this question is fraught with peril. The terminology may not be as literally accurate as we'd like, but the inaccuracy is the best of bad alternatives.

Just how irrelevant-to-Second-Life business are we talking, here? 'Cause I know of a guy who made a fishing app for Second Life and made actual money from it, but that's a little bit different than (say) conducting client meetings or passing memos using some sort of virtual office, and while I can hold the latter idea in my head as something arguably possible, the mind recoils from it as from a suddenly revealed snake.

So I watched my friend play the beta for The Elder Scrolls Online. It looks like an Elder Scrolls game, but the things that make Elder Scrolls games what they are and not single-player MMOs have been removed in favor of MMO conventions. While pretty much every character you can interact with has voice acting, they must have used some sort of voice-generation algorithm that usually sounds okay if you hear one voice in a vacuum, but when you listen to five or six merchants in rapid succession becomes hilariously bad.
