Since the Handheld Headache Machine thread hadn't been bumped in exactly a year, I thought maybe I ought to just start a new topic.

Is anyone playing this admittedly pointless game? If so, please see the N3DS Friend Code Repository and let's trade fruit!

Guys, I need you to solve an argument I'm having with my fiancé. Which is worse:

"Do the Mario", ending theme for the short-lived, late 80's - early 90's TV cartoon The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
Super Mario Brothers Super Show Credits - Do the Mario!

"Walk the Dinosaur", a Mario-themed cover of the Was (Not Was) song by George Clinton for the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film.
George Clinton & The Goombas- Walk The Dinosaur

While "Do the Mario" is certainly not good, it's got charm. I think "Walk the Dinosaur" is undeniably worse, and certainly more embarrassing, even if it existed prior to the movie.

OK, did I miss the thread or something? I find it really hard to believe no one here has been playing this game.

Post 'em here, and I'll throw 'em in the master list.

Note: If your 3DS name isn't some permutation of your forum moniker, you may wish to make a note of that to make it easy on us less clairvoyant types.

Real Life / PAX East 2010

I'll be going to PAX East in 2010, come hell or high water.

Hey everyone, you should go.

And lo, it came to be.

I'm heading to Boston this weekend, having spent too much money on what is ostensibly a huge frivolity, but fuck, I'm excited.

Anyone else going? I'll, uh, trade Pokemon with you.

If not, swag requests go here.

Gaming Discussion / Gamespite Quarterly
« on: March 02, 2010, 05:50:15 PM »
Self-promotion incoming. Feel free to leave now if this sort of shit bothers you.

Landowner Parish and the folks from clean-cut bizarro land have been putting out quarterly anthologies of video game musings, aptly named Gamespite Quarterly. The first three volumes are available now for free, while the latest version was just released this week, and is available for tangible, bound, meat-space purchase  right now.

Now, being that we're all cut from the same cloth here, I imagine the majority of you already know about these things, and either already read them or couldn't give less of a shit. To the rest of you: Go check them out! I've been contributing since volume 3, though I haven't really talked about them here yet since self-promotion can be annoying and I didn't want to get flayed alive. Still, I'm pretty proud of the work I've got here, and of the seriously great articles everyone else has put forth. Particularly, Quarterly 3's massive 8-bit character profile list. And really, there's nothing quite like tangible videogame chatter!

Feel free to discuss the Quarterly here, or if you prefer, to quietly let this thread sink into the abyss.

Gaming Discussion / Final Fantasy IV: TAY
« on: June 01, 2009, 04:21:03 PM »
I picked up Final fantasy IV: The After Years from the Wii Shop Channel today. My initial impressions (maybe 3 hours in):

-Ceodore is the worst name for an anything since Chrodechild. Stop it, you guys. Just stop.

-The game is very much FFIV. The sprites are all redone, but the music and scenarios all seem to b e lifted from the SNES title. I do think the battle backgrounds might be new, though. That said: nice looking sprites!

-Fuck. This game is hard. I haven't outright died yet, due to some quick menuing and dumb luck, but man... These monsters hit hard and often.

-Related: The encounter rate is fucking ridiculous. It feels like I'm fighting every 2.5 steps here. Way to boost the hour count on a downloadable games, guys.

That's a lot of bitching, but let me say this; I'm really enjoying the game so far. I kind of wish it had come out for the DSi shop instead, but I'm not unsatisfied. Too bad it's going to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 3700 Nintendo Funbux for the whole shebang.

Assorted Creations / Impressions
« on: October 31, 2008, 08:28:59 PM »
I've always been pretty good at mimicking sounds. Teachers, friends, enemies; I've pissed them all off. I still have a pipe dream of one day being a mighty voice actor. That day is not today.

So I'm sitting here after a pretty lame Halloween, hopped up on candy corn, reading Metal Gear Solid lines into my microphone and giggling wildly.  Some part of me, deep down inside, thought it would make a neat thread.

Snake and Otacon - Can Love Bloom on the Battlefield?

It's not pitch perfect, but it makes me laugh. Post your impressions (and impressions of other peoples impressions) at your leisure. Bonus points for dialogue that's inherently stupid without any special voices. Allez cuisine.

Gaming Discussion / DSi
« on: October 01, 2008, 09:17:51 PM »
Nintendo announces DSi, surprises no one.

12% smaller, bigger screens, no GBA slot, two cameras, internal storage, music playback.

Slightly more interesting, Wii Points are to be renamed Nintendo points, as Nintendo will be selling DS... stuff over WiFi.

They're also referring to it as their "third platform" since, well, it worked as a bluff once before.

Thaddeus Boyd's Panel of Death / Google Phone
« on: September 23, 2008, 10:39:45 AM »
T-Mobile's G1, the first cellphone to run Google's Android, was officially unveiled today.

Luckily, I just got a Blackberry Pearl with T-Mo in April. No flawed first gen phone for me! While I think T-Mo's notoriously spotty coverage will cripple this thing's internet hotness, I am interested to see how well Google can slip into the market... and what that may mean for Apple.

One more step closer to the Google OS, my friends.

Real Life / Food-o-Vision

I'm a sucker for Food Network. If video games are my true love, cooking is my younger, sexier mistress. I guess that makes IT my wicked mother-in-law or something. But I digress!

Watching Alton Brown's new special, Feasting on Waves. In the same vein as Brown's Feasting on Asphalt series, but instead of traipsing across the US on a motorbike, he's sailing around the Caribbean, finding dives and traditions and generally having a good old time. It's more fun than Suikoden IV!

It's fun (and a bit depressing) to see all these interesting places I'll probably never go. There's something about going to an island I've never heard of, grabbing random plants, and making bush tea that just sounds so alluring. And a bit dangerous.

Looking forward to the rest of this series. That Alton makes a good show.
