I still dont know what the real sys reqs are, the ones posted on steam seem off
A GEFORCE 8 (oldish, pretty much everyone has one) OR A RADEON R8XX? (which are the NEWEST FUCKING CARDS THAT THEY MAKE) for MINIMUM? what the hell

I wish there was a little more class diversity ala say TF2 (Even though that's not an RPG at all, I think each of those classes could be fleshed out to work) but I'm still pretty interested. I really enjoyed Fallout 3 and this basically looks like that mixed with Diablo 2, so sure.

It could be that someone's optimizing for the NVidia hardware, but that'd be insane and I can't imagine you'd get that kind of performance increase.

Basically, engineering failure after engineering failure has left Nvidia without a high end part. It is left waving shells while trying desperately to convince the loyal press that it is real. While that is a problem for the future, the current concern is that it has nothing that can compete with ATI's Evergreen line, HD5870, HD5850, and the upcoming Junipers.

Ahahahahaha

I'm confused. Did Saturnz link the site that spends half the article talking about how nVidia can't compete with ATI anyway, and half the page advertising ATI seriously?

Apparently just about any weapon can be turned into a healing weapon if you're playing the support class.

Healing rockets.

Healing assault rifles.

Healing fists.

Etcetera.

Title: Re: BORDERLANDS

I want to buy this, but this seems like Left4Dead, which I didn't like that much. Maybe L4D with an rpg jammed inside will be good. The one thing that's holding me back now is an apparent lack of a push to talk button. They will probably add that someday, though.

$11.2475, not figuring for tax.

Or for a less smartass answer, it's $33.75 each instead of $45.  Plus tax.  I don't remember offhand what kind of tax shit you have to pay for Steam, and it could possibly lead to some fantastic arguments.

EDIT: Apparently zilch, unless the person initiating the purchase lives in Washington.  Remind me to rethink my opinion of that state.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS

Okay, so Brent-Cait-Niku-Soup 4 pack go?

I am probably going to roll with Lilith, though what tree I do not know yet.  I hope there is respeccing in the game so I can actually play around with them some.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Brentai on October 24, 2009, 12:23:54 AM
I'm obviously enamored with the Medic build but just with Roland's skill tree I see some interesting build variations involving the amazing DISPENSO-TURRET.

I'll probably end up with 20 alts no matter what I do, so hey, whatever.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Pacobird on October 24, 2009, 06:12:08 AM
I think I'm going to start off with Mordecai.  I've always really liked sharpshooters in FPSes and Treasure Finder talents are never a bad thing when you're playing with friends and you're all just starting out.

Also, the last time I really played a ranged class in a multiplayer Action RPG was a Bowazon in 2001, so (MUADDEEPS AND DOTSAREHARD DONT COUNT OKAY).

Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: MadMAxJr on October 24, 2009, 10:37:08 AM
The last time I knew of a console and PC compatible game....  It was called Shadowrun.  Then I think people stopped trying after that.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Brentai on October 24, 2009, 10:48:07 AM
One of the problems with Shadowrun is that the cross-compatibility confused people as to whether it was a 360 or PC game.  That's how I ended up with a copy as a muddled gift.

...I actually ended up with a PC copy that I could play just fine (as opposed to an intended 360 one I couldn't) but I still traded it in for Bioshock anyway.  And Brentai lived happily ever after.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Pacobird on October 24, 2009, 12:56:04 PM
Probably the most ambitious PC/(multiple) console cross-platforming instance is good old FFXI, which basically ended up with literally 90% of the PC population modding the living fuck out of the terrible UI with third-party programs and the console players crying SPLOITZ

I'm totally ready to buy this game the more I hear about it. It's a good thing my bank account is negative, completely stopping me from being able to pay for it with the last of my money and die in two days of starvation next to my car out of gas on the side of the road while I can't call for help because I couldn't pay for my phone.

Thanks to Erfworld I now see the "Decrypting Game Files" message as turning all my game files into horrible pseudo-zombies.

Yyyyyup. It's a good thing the game locks up when I go to the multiplayer lobby.  I wouldn't want to play coop with anyone, no sir.

EDIT: So it is probably the huge server load that is causing the locking. Also no push to talk button, your microphone just transmits no matter what.

How to turn off in-game voice chat
Note that this only turns off YOUR voice chat. You still hear everyone else.

Want to play this name and not have an open mic channel? Want to use ventrilo while playing this game?

Here's what you have to do:
1) Navigate to My Documents\My Games\Borderlands\WillowGame\Config
2) Open WillowEngine.ini
3) Search for "VOiP"
4) Set bHasVoiceEnabled to "false" (I don't know the name right now)
5) Make the file read only: (Right click, properties, read only)
6) Done! The game will no longer transmit anything your mic picks up.

GameSpy IDs, huh?  Bleh.

I took the liberty of using my horrific mod powers to add a new section to Bongo's Master List, so go ahead and post/PM me/him your information/slash.  We're probably going to want to play with buddies for a while, partially because it takes a glacial age for the public server list to load, and partially because reports say that there's not a lot in place to stop pubs from being pubs.

Solution to the biggest problem: Turn off in-game voice, use Vent.

I am super unimpressed with Lilith's assassin tree so far.  If the final skill doesn't bring BIG MONEY BIG PRIZES melee, I'm taking her full bore sorcerer mode.

I'm gonna alt Mordecai I think though.  Three Sirens and one Soldier do not a balanced team make.

but god this game is eight flavors of fun

its a combat rifle that has a six shot magazine, but when you fire, you gain 1 bullet in your total ammo

it also has a zoom and 99 accuracy

Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: jsnlxndrlv on October 27, 2009, 07:08:40 PM
So... you go through your ammo 66% as fast as you would normally? Or do you basically have unlimited ammo as long as you're only using that weapon?
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Detonator on October 27, 2009, 07:23:05 PM
Malvado found a Soldier mod that gives everyone in the party an ammo regen of 1 bullet/second.

This includes rockets.

On the bad side, I seem to have encountered a bug that erased all of my skill points and weapon proficiencies (erased, not unallocated).  This has been noted by the devs and will hopefully be fixed before I never want to play this game again.

So if you've put any time into your characters, you may want to look into backing up your save files (documents/my games/borderlands/savedata/).  You've been warned.

Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Doom on October 27, 2009, 09:16:18 PM
Roland 26
Lilith 12
Brick/Mordekai 1

also hell yeah

also great was the zone where running into enemies would make the cars randomly explode so I'd just huff it to tag the next quest marker while you dudes got raped by giant spiderants.

So getting 100% reduced Sentry cooldown only actually cuts it down to like 20-30 seconds.

Which is still enough to have it ready to win every fight and to deploy it 2-3 times for hard fights. Thumbs up.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS

Yeah, without reliable Roland drops about halfway through an area you are trying to manage ammo. With Doom and Constantine we didn't have to do that.

Skagzilla uses his really long laser breath animation.

You get behind him and spam melee as Roland

You do 5% of his lifebar each time.  :nyoro~n:

Or you shoot him in the laser hole.   :perfect:

Nikuko the Siren is a svelte 26, and much more fun now as mentioned.  Sogeking the Hunter just got to 11 with buddies, and can actually aim some weapons.  My other two wallow in barely played starterness so far.

If you are going to play this game, for the love of fuck get Vent.  I am looking directly at Mr. Saturn who I will refuse to play with ever again until we can scream at him.

OK FINE I GOT VENT (and i thought i was doing better on the DONT RUN AHEAD AND GET EVERYONE DEAD thing today)

Also got my brick up to 15ish and just got the first elemental mod (MY PUNCHES ARE NOW ELECTRIC)
i was under leveled for that quest which ended up causing me to fight a fuckton of alpha skags that were 2 levels above me (the trick is to punch em in their unarmored butts)
my lillith is 22 and more or less always triggers elemental hits

and it seems that the class mod things that add to skills only effect skills you have a point in already

So... you go through your ammo 66% as fast as you would normally? Or do you basically have unlimited ammo as long as you're only using that weapon?

Unlimited ammo with that weapon

Has anybody else been able to hurt other players with the vehicle rocket launcher?  Malikial did it somehow last night, and all we can figure is that because he was technically too low-level to actually have a car, the game somehow registered it as belonging to an enemy.  Or... something.

We found that out after he blew his brother halfway across the Arid Badlands.  P.S. I love the speed boost on Lilith's skill.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Doom on October 28, 2009, 02:49:37 PM
The Rocket Launcher deals no damage to other players.

ANY explosive barrels of which there are several kinds in many places however, will not only wreck other players but other vehicles in record speed.

Me and Smiler duo'd to 30. In my defense, I was sick as a dog and doing non-Borderland things became a lot less possible than it was when I went to bed in a healthy state of mind. Presumably I won't be around after 9:30 PM tonight anyway and as King Support I'm all about helping other people catch-up, so

OK so I started things with my infamous double play. Ride along in a four-man, two-car team to the distant quest location. Quest finished, I shoot the other car and blow it up and then ride off in the sole car, cock-blocking three people into walking to the nearest car-station simultaneously.

So we all begin eventually trying to sneak this in on each other.

And then Smiler and Constantine pull it on me, so I huff it back to the car station. It's near a drawbridge + cliff.

They push me off the cliff and drive off. It is the longest possible walk.

I am powered entirely by hatred and vengance.

And soon.. soon I introduce the terror of the teleport hi-jack, so that a man cannot even hop out of his car for two seconds and grab a tape recorder with peace of mind.

I think people are expecting it to have the replay value of Diablo.

Which it very well could have managed without the vast list of minor problems.  Those countless fuckups don't stop the game from being fun and original and worth the money, but it does keep it out of the upper echelons of "shit we're still going to care about years from now".  Or days, as Niku would have it.

Given that they're clearly trying to get in on everybody's inner lootwhore just like everybody else, I think if they wanted the game to hae longevity they would have included armor.

It'd be entirely realistic to figure you were going to lose your entire playerbase to Diablo 3 anyway, so pushing for replay may actually not have been a smart move.

I have discovered a love for burning things that everyone already knew I had, but the Malwahr (sp?) Hellfire series of legendary SMGs combined with a very high quality Firefly mod and Phoenix at level 5 means I am the burninator. What's that you say? Fire is almost useless against shields? Not when you burn as hot as I do, baby, and for those tough targets I use my shock 2 artifact to shred every shield in the area, and then burn everything all the way to death. The only thing that will mitigate my incendiary lust is heavy armor, at which point I switch to my revolver that possesses the Get Sick trait, making it's x4 corrosive affect almost 100%, and highly contagious to nearby enemies.

Speaking of wide spread mayhem, Incendiary Bouncing Betty mod is highly recommended to the discerning grenadier.

Yeah, I read that, but I wouldn't want to hit a button other than the one for phase walk. The skill would work better in general from a third person perspective, and the same is true of Brick's Berserk. I just think it would have been slightly better design, I don't really care to mess with it.

It would especially alleviate the need to look around you each and every time you leave phasewalk to make sure you're not going to pop next to an explosive barrel.

It took me a few seconds to realize "Oh, Halo controls." After that it only took me a few seconds to realize that this game is pretty much RPG Halo. You have the shields with the same noises from Halo, you jump 7 feet in the air and then just float down like Halo, and you get bossed around by Cortana just like Halo.

It doesn't change the fact that this game is awesome though.

Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Brentai on November 10, 2009, 01:49:11 AM
So yeah, the ending was sorta bullshit, but it does sort of justify a couple of the game mechanics in a roundabout way.
Okay, so you get infinite clones of yourself for a nominal fee, while everybody else in the world actually seems to give a shit about who you go around killing.  And Scooter will happily generate all the cars you want to wreck while bitching about everybody else in the world getting their cars blown up.

So, just for fun, take a quick look at the maker's mark above every New-U and Catch-A-Ride station.  Wanna take a wild guess who makes and controls them?

It's a pretty sweet deal, really - Hyperion's got pretty much exclusive control of who has functional immortality on Pandora, and so they use that very selectively to gain control of the Vault, only allowing use of it to basically the first person they find who is willing to follow the orders of a creepy digitized voice without question.  There's no indication that anybody besides you and the hacked claptrap in Fyrestone has any idea what it really does - since all the stations double in function as a Fast Travel destination, it may be that most of the citizens of Pandora just assume it's an oddly named teleportation network.

The best part about this theory is that it implies that Scooter is actually part of the whole conspiracy, sitting there in New Haven knowing the whole time exactly what you're up to.

Also it means that your reward for finding The Vault is less bullshit - the modest sum of cash that Tannis dumps on you for delivering the key is just for show, since the GA-Man doesn't even want to risk broadcasting out loud what your real reward is - continued unrestricted access to the New-U system, effectively making you an immortal God among the Pandorans.  As long as you don't mind being God of a broken-down pile of trash.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Smiler on November 10, 2009, 08:07:54 AM
But Tannis is some crazy lady who used to work for the Dahl Corp. Hyperion doesn't really have any grip on Pandora aside from some of the technology there. Atlas has the Crimson Lance chilling out there, and Dahl is responsible for the billions of bandits.

Scooter is not bitching at you for blowing up your own car because this game not being Deus Ex. That and you can assume that since you are doing things for him, he sort of doesn't mind as much when you wreck one car out of his infinite pile of cars.
Title: Re: BORDERLANDS
Post by: Brentai on November 10, 2009, 11:01:59 AM
If you follow the storyline closely you start to realize that Tannis is not as crazy as you might think.  It's very likely that she thinks her recorder is talking to her because her recorder is actually talking to her - she's been in communication with the GA since long before you arrived, and has been basically working for her because seriously fuck Dahl.

The idea isn't so much that Hyperion has a tangible grip on Pandora but that they have a very, very subtle way of keeping tabs on everything - through the seemingly innocuous Fast-Travel network and by apparently having some way to monitor the ECHO network, though this last bit is a tad confusing because it seems to be a mishmash of Dahl, Atlas and Hyperion tech.
More dumb Let's Read Into an Unfinished Story fun!
So if you pay attention, it seems that Steele is the person that all four characters are looking for.  She has the same tattoos as Lilith, which suggests she's a Siren (yes I know the tattoos are there because she's a recycled beta model, it STILL suggests she's a Siren).  She's the leader of the local Crimson Lance faction, which we can go ahead and assume is the Brigadiers that Roland is hunting.  She's female, which makes her as much of a candidate for Brick's sister as anybody else.  And, well, God knows what the hell Mordecai's backstory really is, it's obvious they were going to write his first before abandoning the entire Unique Story idea.

...all of which makes it even funnier that the moment you finally catch up to her, she goes and gets devoured.  GUESS THAT WRAPS EVERYTHING UP NICELY HUH :whoops:
I don't know why people want to give more money for this game anyway.  $34 was enough.

Yeah I'm pretty glad that they're really really intent on reminding me why I don't want their DLC.

Hm.  Got my skin item, activated it, but it's not showing up in the New-U menu.  Do you have to do something DLC-special?

No, I don't believe so? Should just work. If it doesn't, at the very least it's tied to your shift account.

It turned out it just chunked the wrong class item at me first, and then allowed me to consume it.  Well, no extra Maya skin, I guess.
