Title: The Ageless Apples of Fort Fatjewels!
Post by: Doom on September 18, 2008, 06:59:06 AM
Hey fellows I learned how to play Dorf Fort over the last month. We should play together!

Basics: 5x5 with NO Rivers, NO Underground Rivers, NO Aquifiers, some trees, temperate region that isn't completely horrifying or terrifying(may be a little), a magical magma pipe somewhere, and a metric fuckton of Obsidian! Flux stone is also guaranteed!

Dwarves and Supplies: 3 picks, 1 axe, no anvil, dozens of seeds, about 100 starting food and the extra barrels to go with it, 400 god damn drinks. Four dogs.

New players! You have a week to complete an in-game year! If things become excruciatingly slow as the fort grows or hindering circumstances show up, just let us know! It's better to pass the fort than to languish and grow sober!

I'll pass the folder to the next player and even teach them how to save/load it! As soon as "SPRING HAS ARRIVED" pops up, that's it! Save and quit out! Don't let another top secret magma flooder be assembled! You can't waste the time of others!

If the fort dies for a retarded reason, we reload from the last save! You don't have to be a great player, but if you're totally new and your year ends with 50 thirst related deaths, reconsider or ask us how we feel about saving it!

And without further ado...

Current Play List;
Year 1: Doom
Year 2: Shinra
Year 3: O. Hakubi
Year 4: Zara
Year 5: Geo
Year 6: Fredward?
Year 7: Romo

Cutsies: Kayin

FORTRESS FATJEWELS

I'm banging the duchess. That is the only reason that a simple fellow like Doom Raspringed could ever get to run a brand new fortress carved into the side of a volcano.

We arrived in the Spring, eager to discover the bounty of fresh magma. Apparently that bounty is delicious obsidian everywhere. My father said I never had a head for business, but he was just too damn stubborn and "moral" to drive his workers harder. Pfft.

The basic tenets of fine traffic and finer murderhalls begin with our entrance. I have some... ideas, regarding ballista and staring down the length of an only drawbridge, but I fear I will have to focus on more pressing issues.

Perhaps future rulers will benefit from my Dwarven OCD. The beginnings of our food storehouse, kitchens, dining area and basic workshop cluster begin.

Before long the storehouse is complete and I tell the three lazy dullards not hauling precious, precious obsidian to start hauling precious, precious booze inside!

We begin digging out... suitable quarters for ourselves. And myself. Ho Ho.

A fine quartet of war dogs and a newly erected Trade Depot promise safety and protection in this vast, magma torn wilderness! Truly, I am a visionary for my time! I appoint one of the idiot, non-digging peasants as an "Everyman" and set his labors appropriately to fill in for any of the duties I'd delegate to children or the mentally disabled.

Food preparation area is up. Three stills. Booze is serious business.  :wat:

My lady came to me with notice that one of our new constructions may get a man killed. I try to shake off her concerns with my usual bravado and inspect the site personally. Sissies!

(http://doom.pyoko.org/DF/DF17.JPG) GREAT ARMOK! THE SIZE OF THIS AVIAN IS RIDICULOUS!

I.. wisely decree the well be constructed closer to home. Surely, mine is a blessed wisdom.

I designate a "Chosen Engraver" to spend the rest of his life smoothing the fortress down, then engraving it with heroics tales of my leadership. He should be and is honored and begins decorating my modest accomodations.

Thanks to that dullard Everyman, the basic workshop array is formed. Though I keep an important project outside and I think the carpentry workshop of convenience is still up, I move masonry operations in door, as Armok intended.

We are finally situated in modest accomodations! Time to begin the core of Fortress Fatjewels' mighty coffers! With three craftsdwarf's shops erected, OUR MUGS SHALL BLOT OUT THE SUN!

Then.. we shall drink in the shade.

I personally begin excavating the most important project the fortress shall know to date.

Yet I am interrupted by the sound of coins jingling in pockets! To the Depot!

Obsidian Mugs have a default value of 30 moneys. Also, the depot is wagon-accessible.

Over 3500 moneys in obsidian mugs. Hot damn. We get an iron anvil, all the food they can spare, and.. some thread, for sure. Any spare blocks they have, two bits of rope, a copper cage, a dwarven syrup barrel, two spare barrels, two barrels of booze, more seeds  :slow:

WHAT A HAUL. 2400 moneys worth!

By the might of mine own Dwarven hands, the secret construction continues. I work in blessed solitude until...

SIXTY GOBLINS! This would be the one disadvantage of my Finished Goods stockpile being next to the fucking Depot! No more wells this year, assholes!

How we're doin'. Not bad for the disgraced son of a Masonry/Mechanic and a Cat Butcher.

Those hounds I trained catch one of those filthy lizards in a more compromising position. Unfortunately, he had the presence of mind to hold his dagger in front of himself when one of those fine, noble pitbulls leapt for his throat.

Guess we should've brought a cat or two.

The secret construction is complete and I write these final notes in my log as I lay with my lover. It appears that the King does not recognize my position as Grand Advisor and Viser and that I shall be allowed to continue my efficient mining duties so long as word of this scandal does not reach the Mountainhomes. Though this puts a definite end to my dreams of a golden dining table and platinum throne... it is acceptable. Perhaps they'll even let me keep my tomb. It is a little muddy, surely that is punishment enough under the code of Dwarven justice.

To my successor, I'd suggest to you that no Dwarven home is complete without a moat and associated bridge. We also attracted no migrants despite our sizable wealth and friendly trade, so expect enough empty heads to start a military shortly..

Oh, and I guess farms are good, but I didn't feel like digging any. Our food stores should last until the first wave of space-occupying idiots. Good luck, and don't touch my fucking tomb.

I'll play if there's any other Dwarf Fortressiers on here other than you and I. Otherwise I'm just gonna start my own new fortress with ever I get the chance. I always use indoor trade depots, but this time I have a REALLY bitchin' idea for one.

The problem with my fortresses is always that I end up making some kind of legendary dining room, statue garden or zoo and then my Dwarves spend half their time throwing wicked parties and not doing any work. Oh well at least we always have plenty of booze.

Shinra's turn officially begins on Friday and he's a proficient Dort Forter so hopefully we'll see Year 3 in action by the end of the weekend, though Shinra has until next Friday if he so desires.

I guess that definitely puts you in, huh Geo? Year 4, or gonna wait?

Ooh! Put me down for Year 7.

I might have to drop, though, if I don't have a desktop (:MENDOZAAAAA:) by the time my turn rolls around. I don't think this laptop can handle a mature fort.

Word from the king has quickly reached me, the response to my queries met with surprising haste; it was a scant few months ago when I sent the letter to be delivered with the dwarf caravans, speaking of the idiot lord Doom and his ascent to power through his brute lust. And already he has been deposed. The messenger who delivered the proclamation to Doom also sought me out, with orders from the king under the mountain to take control of this situation in the interim, until a better leader could be found. The duchess will remain the figurehead of course, and carry out my orders without question; My unfortunate position within Fatjewels lends little respect, and should my name be known too early I fear that my fellows will accomplish nothing I set them to...

My first order of business is to do something about our dwindling food supplies; The past lord saw no reason to dig farm tunnels or worry about butchery, and we are very nearly out of food; I quickly order farm tunnels to be dug underneath our food stores, but in the interim, I turn to our emergency food supply.

As our workers set themselves to their tasks, a caravan of tree-huggers from a nearby settlement approach. We buy some scattered bits of cloth and food from them, and send them on their way with a handful of obsidian mugs.

With the elves out of our hair (finally) expansion begins on the rest of the fortress; A new dining hall is quickly carved out, and preparations are underway to expand the residential ward to make room for...

Well, then. I set the migrants to work digging out some mining passages to the southwest. The expedition leader picked the site for it's flux richness, and I was determined to find the source of the vein, as well as whatever else might be found in the limestone. Quickly, we uncover a vein of magnetite! Iron and Flux mean great things for the future of our fortress, and I quickly order the magnetite vein to be exposed further.

One of the children that came in with our first wave of migrants has seized a craftsdwarf's shop, and refuses to come out. There is some show of concern at this, but I allow the young dwarf their indulgence and continue along with the business of the fort until he produces his artifact.

Young Kol's first project has produced amazing results. Slippeddagger is moved into the finished goods pile, and Kol goes on his way as if nothing had happened. That boy will grow to be a great craftsdwarf someday.

With the production of our first artifact, I have decided to reveal myself; I, the idiot everyman, in reality a treasury agent under the king himself! I personally oversee the excavation of the hilly entranceway into our fort, before soon taking my office as Bookkeeper and Hoardmaster of Fatjewels.

With my position secured in the fortress, I take the time to review our books; The numbers are worrisome. Our wealth is growing at an exponential rate, which is never a bad thing, but money attracts goblins, and we will soon begin to feel the weight of goblin boots treading on our lands. With the first of our newly drafted military reaching champion status, construction begins on walls within our canyon entryway. These mighty walls shall hold back all but the fiercest invaders.

Another dwarf has seized a workshop, this time one of our local jewelers. He quickly produces his artifact... A tube agate grate?

Still scratching our heads over Kib's legendary project, we are nearly taken offguard by a goblin raid. Doom, hard at work on the fortress walls is caught off guard and set upon by five goblin wrestlers, and brought to the ground in moments. Our champions rush to his defense...

And arrive just in the nick of time...

Or not.

Though the goblins were quickly defeated, they claimed the life of one of our greatest; Though I had my disagreements with the past Lord, I wished no ill will upon him,  and the loss of a dwarf so strong and stout has brought a period of mourning across Fatjewels. Almost mad in their sorrows, many of the peasantry have taken to dragging the former posessions of Doom to his tomb; Many others obsessively check his cabinet in his former quarters, sometimes spending days searching for things they may have missed.

One champion, in his sadness, has donned a second suit of platemail. Perhaps he feels he can better protect the citizenry if he is adorned in twice as much heavy armor?

Though the labor has now become a tremendous strain, we have finally finished the walls. The mighty structure has been named Doom's Guard, after the hero who fell to see it's completion. May the goblins never take another dwarven life so long as these walls hold!

Spring comes, and my gavel is heavy. I have set it down in favor of my books and quill; I will continue my duties as bookkeeper and clerk of Fatjewels, but lord I can be no longer. May the next leader of this place see better results than I...

(I don't have any way to host this save and the save file is too big for an attachment; so I will be sending the save to doom or something to upload)

4th Granite

I've heard that nature abhors a vacuum.  As much as dwarves may not like to admit it (feeling that it gives them something in common with elves), they, too, are a part of nature.  With the former Lord Shinra returning to his position of clerk and the unfortunate death of Lord Doom a vacuum has been left in the leadership of Fatjewels, and I have taken it upon myself to fill this void.

I have been monitoring the progress of the fort for the past two years, and it appears that there is a great deal of work to be done.

Our food and alcohol stores were about average for a fort this size, I noticed, and we were in no fear of immediate starvation.  The lack of dedicated masons and metalsmiths was unnerving, though after asking around I soon realized that there were others in other professions that took upon these roles as necessary, and I saw no need to alter this at the time.

One of the previous rulers had seen fit to secure the entrance with a grand wall; a commendable gesture, to be sure, but the unlocked doors proved to be a great security hazard.  So, too, was the crack in the wall just outside the cluster of workshops.  This, along with the rows of traps, would require more work.

I was heartened to see all the barrels, however.  I am a firm believer that no fort can have enough food in reserve, and I plan on expanding farming operations and filling each and every one of these barrels in short order to ensure that we will be able to deal with sudden influxes of immigrants.

...and whose bright idea was it to leave all those mugs lying around?  We need some friggin' bins, stat.

Housing is quite spacious, which is rather unusual in this day and age.  To the south is the dining room and barracks.  Placing the barracks between the entrance and residential section was a clever move, ensuring that even in rest our army would be able to defend its people.

To the southwest of the main fort a mine had been built, only reachable by overland travel.  I ordered it sealed and drafted up plans for digging to it from belowground in order to minimize contact with hostile forces.  On top of that, I pulled up the primary geological survey ordered by the late ruler Doom and discovered that there was a magma pipe somewhere in the vicinity.  Discovering the location of the pipe was of the utmost importance.

But none of this explains just who I am, does it?

I am O. Hakubi Stinthadnirmek, or "Theaterdefense" in the Dwarven tongue, so named for my ancestors' encouragement of the fine arts.  But myself?  I'm an engineer.  That means I solve problems.  Not conundrums like "what is beauty," because that would fall within the purview of your conundrums of philosophy.  I solve practical problems.  For instance... how am I going to stop some big mean goblins from tearing us structurally superfluous new behinds?  The answer...

Use a trap.  And if that don't work...

...use more traps.  Like these hand-carved, gear-mounted little old numbers designed by me, built by me, and you'd best hope...

...not triggered by you.

15th Granite

Kadol Shorastemor has been acting... unusually as of late.

He raves on about how his creation requires gemstones, silk cloth and shells, the latter two of which are nowhere to be found in the fort.  I fear he may go mad from being unable to see things to fruition, and have locked the door to the workshop and ordered construction of his coffin.  Better safe than sorry.

17th Granite

An elven caravan arrived today, followed by a goblin snatcher attempting to capitalize on the distraction that was the fort's occupants attempts to transfer mugs on at a time to the trading depot.  He was repelled, to be sure, but I fear that next time we may not have as many eyes keeping watch.  As such, I have leashed two war dogs near the entrance to ensure that none will be able to sneak in without their knowing.

As for the trading, the merchants seemed to feel that several dozen mugs for several barrels of spirits was a respectable deal.  Perhaps there is a chance that they may not be as unenlightened as we first thought.

24th Granite

Ambush!

For some reason a pond outside the fortress' walls was marked as a dumping spot for stone, inspiring the goblins to stage an assault on Kib Udizdegel.  Fortunately Kib is an excellent runner, and as of this writing he is handily evading one of the goblin wrestlers.

Unfortunately, the other members of the ambush seem to have not taken the bait: A lone goblin swordsman breached the walls and butchered the Elven caravan before charging the fort.  Upon his entrance a stone-fall trap broke his left hand and right leg, as well as knocking him unconscious.

Before his body even hit the floor Ducim Cogtomus, head of the military and a hell of a fighter, dashed past him and cleaved his head from his shoulders as casual as can be without even breaking stride before rushing through the front gates to slay three more goblins.  Had I not been there I would not have believed it.

Alas, the attack managed to claim the life of one of our miners, Athel Sarveshamith.  I have ordered a series of chambers for burial excavated so as to give him a proper interment.  On the upside, with the elves dead we're free to reclaim both our mugs and the goods they brought for trade.

23rd Slate

Primary excavation has begun on the shaft leading to the base of the fortress site.  If there is magma to be found, I shall find it.

1st Felsite

That's that, I suppose: Poor Kadol's gone completely berserk, slipping through a quirk of the architecture to kill Medtob Menganam before being killed in turn by Ducim.  Misfortune comes in droves, it seems.

Though no sooner than I write that than I hear word that immigrants have arrived.  Twenty of them, to be precise.  Fortunately we have just enough rooms available for them.

20th Felsite

Excavations have turned up a great deal of gemstones, but no magma.  Until I have located it I have ordered all forging-related tasks to be put on hold.

In other news, I have condensed our local mug collection down into a devil's dozen of wooden boxes and cleared the main hallway of clutter.  Quite a bit of work for only three months, I'd say.

13 Hematite

One of our scouts reported that the human caravan was on its way.  As a precaution, I am ordering the military to be put on alert and stationed near the gate.  Once bitten, twice shy.

While directing my fellow dwarves in the transportation of our trade goods, two things pertaining to the defense of the fortress came to mind: The first was that the kennel, stationed beyond the fort's gate, needed to be moved to the inner courtyard.  Dogs were becoming more numerous by the month in the fort, and unlike cats they could be trained for war.

The second was the small pile of crossbows in the weapons stock room and the bones littering the landscape.  I had been tinkering with plans for a crossbow that required no dwarf to fire it, instead being triggered by targets crossing into its line of fire; a "sentry crossbow," if you will.  This would make for as good a time as any to test it; bones would make for a very cheap, very effective source of ammunition.

19th Hematite

A human has sprung from ambush!

...yes, while there were humans at the trade depot.  I'm... not quite certain myself.  Judging from the reactions of the traders he didn't seem to be with them, though they may have just been afraid of the goblins that appeared with him.  Thanks to my foresight two dwarves - one of whom was Ducim - were on hand to mete out punishment with their macuahuitls.

No sooner was that threat dealt with than another human leading a group of goblins appeared to the south, with a goblin snatcher far to the north.  Reprisal was swift and brutal.

Fortunately the merchants survived, and our trusty broker Alath Kuletdumat was able to negotiate for a not insigificant amount of meat and liquor, some cloth, leather, metal bars, two spare anvils and about 50 iron bolts, all for some kobold clothing.  Wonderful creatures, kobolds; fragile, no sense of self-preservation and always dressed in the finest giant spider silk.

When queried as to what I expected of him next year, I suggested that perhaps he could bring more food and, weight willing, more metal bars.  The ones they brought with them were remarkably cheap, enough so that buying them and crafting them into trade goods would grant us an incredible profit.

28th Hematite

Well, I suppose that now is as good a time as any to prepare for the next wave of immigrants.

18th Malachite

Still no magma.  A great deal of platinum, though.

25th Galena

Summer has been quiet.  No goblin ambushes, no immigrants, the farmers have been hard at work building up our stores of booze, the miners have been busy belowground searching for the magma pipe... I have taken to building additional traps around the entrance to keep myself busy.  Ducim seemed to take umbrage at this; when he spoke to me he said that I don't think that he's capable of performing his duty.  I replied that while I cannot fight anywhere near as well as he can I still feel responsible for the safety of my people and am willing to do what I can to ensure they stay safe.  Besides, I said, if they ever brought in archers you and your men could stay behind the doors and ambush them in close range while the stonefall traps did the work.  Judging from his response ("More rubble, less trouble, da?") he seemed to understand.

1st Limestone

One of our children has been struck by inspiration.  Evidently this has happened before.

He scooped up a double armful of logs and some uncut peridots before making a beeline for the craftsdwarf workshop.  Fort's full of child prodigies, I'll say that much.

8th Limestone

Aban came out of seclusion this evening carrying this with him:

We appraised it at 27,600.  I've a mind to dig out a room and gather up some sand to make glass display cases for all the artifacts we produce.  Perhaps some other time.

9th Limestone

Merchants.  Fellow dwarves this time.  As soon as the call went up Ducim organized his men and set up guard near the gate, stood around for five minutes, then promptly went to bed.  Perhaps he has faith that his fellow dwarves will be able to do what humans cannot.  Regardless, I exchanged some goblin clothing for about a dozen assorted metal bars, some spare bits of steel armor, a few spools of thread, even more alcohol and a great deal of meat.

24th Limestone

Another goblin ambush.  They seem to be targeting our fisherdwarves; two wrestlers charged after Ablel Ninganul, chasing him down an embankment before strangling him to near to death.  Ducim arrived in time to kill the goblin, but Ablel's windpipe was crushed; he was not long for this world.

This cannot continue.

It will not be a thing of beauty; I asked the masons only that they build it as fast and as securely as possible regardless of what stone they required.  But once it is finished, we will have a protected source of water within our walls for both fishing and drinking.

Of course, no sooner did I order this than another goblin ambush lead by two humans made its appearance close by, many of whom were carrying crossbows.  Incensed over the loss of one of our own, our champions charged through the hail of arrows and dealt with them in a manner which they deemed most appropriate.

25th Timber

It is done.  Our water source and fishing hole is now safe from ambushes.

4th Moonstone

It just dawned on me that there was a small fortune in clothing and armor waiting to be claimed just outside.  Waste not want not.

It's entirely feasible at this point to base our entire economy around collecting the spoils of war of goblin sieges, trading the clothing to the merchants and melting down the unwearable iron and steel armor for later use.  Though judging from the absolutely enomrous pocket of magnetite to the southwest I doubt we will ever need to rely entirely upon outside sources for iron.

20th Obsidian

oh geez oh armok there's kittens in the fort who let them in they'll fucking doom us all

locusts, tiny furry locusts

23rd Obsidian

Without any prior warning Shem, one of our woodworkers, began speaking in tongues before running off and claiming a carpenter's shop, babbling about paying tribute to beings from beyond time.  Though in retrospect, I suppose the entire point of sudden, gibbering madness is the suddenness of it.  At least they manage to be productive.

1st Granite

Spring has come.  It has been a year since I placed myself in charge, and I find myself reflecting on the state of the fort:

The fort's defenses are more than adequate, though there's certainly nothing stopping me from building more traps; word has it that goblin armies can get rather large in these parts.  Food and alcohol are plentiful, and should something as disastrous as a liquor shortage occur we have a safe source of clean water.  The goblins and kobolds have been kind enough to supply us with enough clothing to trade for whatever we may desire in the future, and though our military is a mere six dwarves, they have proven that any one of them is more than the equal of an entire squad of goblins.  Though there have been hardships and lives lost, I believe that the fort is in far better shape now than it was before I assumed leadership.

Still no sign of the magma pipe, or the obsidian which surrounds it.  I'm not a geologist, but I seem to recall that mining a series of tunnels that criss-cross the entire bottom layer of the plot is a sure-fire way to find a tube full of molten stone that goes below the earth's crust, much less passes through the layer that one just tunneled through.

As for myself, I shall step down from my leadership role (ceding it to the former expedition leader, Alath Kuletdumat) and continue working on the mechanical aspects of our fort.  I feel that my sentry crossbow design can be improved somewhat: The speed of the firing mechanisms could be improved, and the bolt container could be widened into a larger hopper design to hold more ammunition.  Assuming that the general construction of the ballista firing mechanism could be scaled down, its bolts could be wrapped in oily rags and fired through a flame as a slower, but more powerful supplement to the rapid-fire bolts of the crossbow; both could be combined to

(the notes degenerate into formulas, sketches and barely-legible handwriting)

Fatjewels, Start of Year 4 (http://www.sendspace.com/file/3yuskn)

Your turn, Geo.  At least I think Geo is next; someone (read: Doom) needs to get a turn order list all up ins.

If there's magma, and the bottom floor has none, then it has to be a pool. That means it could potentially be anywhere in the plot. I built a good number of wood furnaces, and there may be coal somewhere. Any map with a mountainous biome usually has some - if you find coal, make it into coke and smelt away.
Title: Re: The Ageless Apples of Fort Fatjewels!
Post by: James Edward Smith on September 24, 2008, 08:36:24 PM
Having to do all your smelting with Charcol or mostly Charcol is a pain in the ass. I've done it before though, I just base a lot of my heavy defences around stone hurling catapults, marksmen behind fortifications who don't need heavy armour, wooden giant weapon traps, and lever released dangerous animals. Finding large deposits of coal makes it completely fine though. Coke production still requires an assload more manpower than magma smelting, but at least it's fast so if manpower isn't a problem for you then it's almost as good. Charcol is just too damn slow though.

Magma and water trap rooms are cool too, but I've never had the guts to attempt to set up a system of them.

The expedition leader seems to be increasingly more nervous about the lack of magma.

"I don't think there's any magma here, chief", I tell him.

"What? We were specifically looking for areas with magma and underground rivers!"

"Are you sure it wasn't magma -or- underground rivers?"

"Uh."

While they're busy arguing whether there is magma or not, I gather my fellow miners and start reassigning work. We miners have been doing everything: Masonry, engraving, mechanics. Nothing more fair than a miner being the mayor.

A... spiked chair. Nice.

The elves come in, but are ambushed.

They're trounced by our guards. I have no idea what was done to these fellows, they're like all five feet tall and speak like Robocop.

A batch of migrants arrives every season. The bedrooms have to be inflated severely.

I order a new, less cramped area for workshops built along with mayoral offices. The dining room is increased in size as well.

Humans come in and offer lots of metal and other things for trade. Their prices are ludicrous, but we have lots of loot from the fallen goblins and elves.

An artifact was lost! I order the other artifacts to be stored in a safe position and mount the artifact grate as some kind of sculpture in the dining room. It works beautifully.

I decide to make a pump from the underground river. Much digging and building is done, with the help of the exploratory shafts built into the mountain.

After eleven windmills, the pump starts working. I leave the specifics of the irrigation system for the next year.

The dwarves have even weirder things to trade. Engraved musical instruments? I order them to bring more useful things.

One of those coffins holds two bodies. Apparently whoever walled the coffin in did so from the inside. Frightening.

We have blue diamonds and you decided to use peridot to make a mini-forge. Great. We'll be sure to keep it safe.

Two towers for eventual siege machines and crossbows were built while the guard took care of defenseless sasquatches.

All in all, the population has nearly doubled this year. I leave additional planning to my close advisor, Mr. Geothermal, and leave him notes (press shift+N) regarding the operation of the levers and what to do upon my eventual burial, near the water pump system I am so proud of.

Oh, I know. I've tried it with 50, and it runs at a good clip. It might be a bit sluggish if we get up to, say, 100, but I'll endure.

Incidentally, for anyone with performance issues, there's a nice option [PARTIAL_PRINT] in the init.txt. I haven't seen it mentioned on the wiki, but it made a huge difference for me, particularly in the early game. Apparently it doesn't work with some systems, though, according to the description, and it even causes minor graphical glitches on my computer.

Post by: Kayin on October 05, 2008, 01:30:59 AM
I, Kayin the dungeon master arrived early that spring. I was requested to arrive at the fortress for dungeoneering  and was frankly not looking forward to it. The Doom fellow has always been the black sheep of his family and we never got along.

Good news is he's dead! Score! Bad news is no one knows who's supposed to be in charge anymore... Zarathustra seems to be the only qualified leader, but he's busy making out with his water pumps. No matter. I'm not above using power for my own enjoyment!

My first publics work program was an irrigated farm. Zara constructed all these fancy pumps with dials and do dads but they didn't actually do anything. With a few calculations we would have a reserve tank style irrigation system!

Not too long after assuming power, we get a quick legendary artifact! Hopefully the rest of the job will be this easy!

Unfortunately not. A few early hunting accidents ended rather poorly. Obok got his chucks bitten out of him. All his chunks. But hey, if I was ever going to die I'd want it to be to a hot cougar.

Supplies seemed sufficient, as did space, but I now that a fortress can grow out of hand in no time with immigrants. I quickly set off to extend the living quarters and ramp up the food and beer production. Elves came. I traded them a bunch of carved rocks for all their food and booze. It's ab out all they had worth taking. Why weren't people creating crafts before I came? Theres no bigger scam then trading carved rocks for booze. I guess this got lost in the shuffle. I began trying to make ill used workshops useful again.

But thena Fey mood overtook me. I looked into the distance and knew what I must do.

I'm never surprised by the foolishness of my fellow dwarves. Todd here while constructing this floodgate locked himself in. He had to wait a week before Max got to installing the lever. Things got funnier when Zara almost died while digging into his reserve tank. He didn't tell me how powerful his pump system was. He was submerged instantly upon cracking through but fortunately managed to get to stairs before drowning. He was very curt with me about having left notes about what levers did. Still, he never told me why I'd pull them. Oh well, it would of been pretty ironic if he rowne. We wouln't of even been able to get the body for that crazy water-grave. But anyways, by the beginning of summer the farm was ready.

Holy crap! He drank a total of 75 barrels before basically dying from liver failure. I had the butcher carve him up. We got a buzz just from eating his meat.

My insanity deepenened...

Traders game. Again I mostly took beer and food, but I think I also took some rope and cloth. Also set up some nice wells to be nice. Anyways, theres the paper work. I asked them to send more beer.

Woah, another Meng. Name must be blessed or something.

Okay not. Shame really. Theres a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It was a shame he had to damage hers. :(

Sometimes I think Zara is just fucking with me.

Fall came. More traders. Same deal. Food and booze. They took rocks. Fortress wins again!

The roofing was soon finished. I was elated.

Behold, the Legendary Mega construction, the The Hall of Heavenly Judgement. It spans from tower to tower and is all fortification. I also constructed many iron crossbows. While I didn't have time to set up an archery devision, now we will only need one instead of two. And besides. Look at it. It's freaking awesome. Only way for a dwarf to be off the ground while still being under it!

Another artifact. I think I'll wear it.

Unfortunately come the winter we lost several brave men to ambushes while the troops seemed to refuse to go outside. One time they even ambushed one of our cats. I'm SERIOUS. They ganked a cat and ran away.

Well, Spring came and heres the run down. To my successor. We've been growing pig tails and dimple cups and cave wheat even though NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING WITH THEM. SO I finally set up querns to grind them. We could get some nice dyed clothes production going! Also get on that archery team, a siege could come any minute! Besides that, just have a good one! I'm going to drin booze and spank loose women. OH SHIT WAIT I ALREADY DRANK ALL THE BEER. Uh, you better get on that quick before the dwarves get pissed at you!

(I knew I should of been paying more attention.. D:)

Title: Re: The Ageless Apples of Fort Fatjewels!
Post by: Fredward on October 15, 2008, 12:00:19 PM
Taking control of the fort at a time of great crisis, I, Administrator Fredward the Able began hasty production of barrels and booze. Fortunately, an ill-fated Elven caravan abandoned supplies enough to boost our collective blood alcohol level for the time it took to fire up the stills.

Noting the sheer number of goblins which waylaid this caravan, I set our valiant miners to work upon that most simple and elegant defensive feature: the moat. Fortunately, due to the well-designed entrance to our fort (for which I must commend my predecessors), the width of said moat was minimal, and thus, the depth could be greater. It did cross my mind to fill the moat partially with water, and my successors may well find this expedient, but I could not count it a high priority. After all, few mortal beings can survive such a fall.

The next task for our miners was to continue the exploratory mining which would -- I hoped -- reveal the magma pipe so long anticipated. But to no avail. I was hesitant to give in to the naysayers' claims, but now it seems certain that our site has but a small supply of magma, if any.

Let us on to happier things, though. Throughout this time, I had our engravers and masons work upon the beautification of our fortress. In particular, I ordered the dining hall smoothed, engraved, and refurnished, topping this effort off with an abundance of sculpture. Truly magnificent.

The final legacy I leave is that of the Fatjewels Zoo, which, though understocked at the moment, is nevertheless become a popular meeting place for noble and peasant alike. The main exhibit, at the moment, is a captured human -- truly, the most dangerous game of all.

As for the accomplishments of other dwarves, well, my reign saw the production of two artifacts: one, a diamond amulet which exceeds all our other artifacts in beauty and value; and two, a... turtle shell toy boat. Called "Glovedsmiles". Well. One can't win them all.

Finally, it seems as though our honorable mayor is slowly losing her mind. Twice this year has Zaratustra called upon the fort's forges to produce flasks (an obsession which has been documented in at least one engraving), and it seems she has been carrying on a romantic relationship with the late Doom Raspringed. This may bode ill for the fort. Also to be noted is the continuing lack of real goblin presence, save for the occasional ambush. It may well be that we are soon in for a truly gruesome siege.
