Title: Dino Run
Post by: James Edward Smith on April 02, 2008, 08:28:52 PM
I signed up for the beta of Dino Run (http://www.pixeljam.com/dinorun/beta/) a long time ago. The user name is dino and the password is runrunrun I was never a huge fan of Gamma Bros. but I did love the artwork in that game, especially the intro. I liked how the guy you didn't choose still took off with you and then just sort of naturally flew off to fight other guys behind you and then came back if you died as your second life. The game was a little too simple for me, I would have liked more abilities for your ship rather than just different kinds of shots and a little more to do than just shoot rows of enemies.

Dino Run looked a lot cooler to me and now having played it I am quite pleased with it. I like the set up and the general idea of the game and just the sort of catch 22 it offers. Run for your life, oh by the way, I made lots of stuff for you to try and find and grab an lots of pretty environments for you to explore... but there's really no time for that, RUN.

It's not the best thing ever, but it's cute and it's given me some always appreciated inspiration that I'll put to good use as I finish up my D-beetle Blackberry game that I've been making in my spare time since my internship at RIM started.

I disagree with Geo.  I think this is the best thing ever.

Seriously, if you haven't yet, log into the game and try this thing out.  It is a triumph of atmosphere.  Attempting to outrun an actual factual apocalypse is poetic and terrifying; I got to Level 6, when things started really looking bleak, and my God... despite the fact that I knew it was futile, I still had to try...

Okay, I guess that Level 7 is the last one.  I beat it on Moderate.

This is like a thesis statement on why games are art.

It's not so bleak Kazz,
you can survive if you make it to the little magical grotto with little plant lights and endlessly spawning critters to eat
.

I did sort of think it was the coolest game I'd played for a while, but I didn't want to overhype it because I know a lot of people don't find as much pleasure as I do in cool atmospheres and artistic game concepts that aren't the most engaging games ever made but that are just really well implemented and just feel cool.

Having played this game a little more, I have a better description for it now; it's a lot Sonic the Hedgehog only nothing in the game can hurt or kill you other than the impending extinction of your kind. Everything else in the game can only slow you down or inconvenience you as you run, dino, run.

I really appreciate the complete plethora of the unlockables and hidden secrets to find in the game. I have been painfully bad at actually grabbing a lot of the super eggs just because I'm always too afraid of the apocalypse to ever slow down even for a second. So far I only have the Rinx egg, the Alien egg, and the Magma egg. I almost have enough bones to get my first reward though.

I'm glad you played this and like it Kazz. I was sort of hoping this thread could become an enjoyable dino penis measuring contest and for a while no one seemed to be giving much of a shit.

Just remember, this game is still in beta so expect some bugs here and there though a lot of the major ones have already been found (one big one by myself, actually) and fixed.

beat on medium, only got the magma egg and even that was only by accident. I can never catch those damn falling eggs

Oh, if we're bug reporting: that first volcano on Level 6, I got onto a dinosaur's back (the kind you can ride like Yoshi) and rode it up until about the exit, when I jumped off into the ceiling just before the exit, that little ledge bit.  And I got stuck.  I was sort of clipping through the background and rubberbanding, unable to escape until the horrible, horrible thing happened.

Also, I don't think we can measure our e-peens too well because you can level up your dinosaur on repeated run-throughs.

But yeah, the atmosphere, the colors, the music, the sounds, the events, it's all brilliant.  It's scary, too, on the first run; I didn't have any idea where I planned to get to, I just knew that staying in the same spot was absolutely not an option.

Fucking boulders kill me more than anything else.  It's damn near impossible to get past one if it's not bouncing and you're on an incline, and if the boulder is too big to jump over you're fucked there too.

Here's a tip:  Rapidly tapping Down while in the air causes you to hover a bit.  You can actually fly if the doom is on top of you, too.  I'm not sure if that qualifies as "surfing" or not, but it probably is.  I haven't actually gotten credit for doing it yet; maybe you have to do it for a long while.

ok, once I've fallen through the world and the game has crashed, if you go left instead of right the game crashes, if you walk off the right edge on one of those dinosaurs it crashes

mostly I liked that you can hitch rides on pterodactyls and if you jump on an alosaur you can ride it like a horse

That was adorable. I felt so sad when he died.

The only improvement I can think of would be to have your dino carry the eggs on his back and have them get ripped off and broken open whenever you screwed up a jump.

No, I don't think that would be an improvement at all.

Also a giant robot portion with controls that are too complicated and never get used again.

Hey, found a BIG crash.  If you collect a super-strength fruit while riding on a boulder, it crashes, with a big "OOPS" text popup.

I've gotten those before. You have to have a plugin for the beta installed and then those actually have debug information in them rather than just OOPS. They are basically what he put in all of his catch blocks for exceptions.

Well, that was fun, I got most of the super eggs before my computer randomly crashed.  (Happens about 2% of the time when I'm doing nothing other than a browser based game.  Stupid Vista.)

Also you have to collect six doodads to see the ending, and they're all behind invisible walls.  am i rite?

Dispite receiving the Egg Saver trophy, I still don't have all of the super eggs. I'm missing the T-rex egg and the Bronto Egg. Anyone have these?

I found the T-Rex egg.  I think it's one you actually have to run LEFT at one point to get.  Obviously, you might want to do it when highly upgraded in Medium or Easy(if it shows up there) difficulty.

Found the T-rex egg. Now only the Bronto egg eludes me.

I`ve been playing the speed run levels lately, There`s a lot of them and only some of them are rehashes of the regular challenge mode levels. Plus some of them have cool unique looking survival rooms at the end. The cost bones to unlock, but you can make a lot of bones beating them and since none of the shop items seem to work, you might as well by these with your bones instead. Getting some of the milestones and other trophies is easier by playing a lot of the speed runs too.

Also, any time you finish one you get +1 to your dinos saved, so it`s faster way to move on to the next Dino (all the dinos look slighty different) rather than having to play all the levels of the challenge game to do it. My current dino has a spot on his back, yay!

This game absolutely rules. I've run into a few OOPS', which is a little frustrating after an epic, nail-biting victory, but still, pretty badass.

What's all this then?

Multiplayer, you say? (http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/dinorun/)

Played a few rounds with Faceless Internet Shyguys and really enjoyed a few of the closer rounds. Multiplayer really shines when boulders start breaking up around the players, everyone's forced into one screen, and every jump and trajectory can mean the difference between a complete stop and rocketing ahead.

Wish there were more levels, though.

EDIT: Rocked out with Dreth, McDohl, and Romo for a bunch of games. Besides the fact that Dreth's dino evidently has small rocket packs attached to his legs, the fact that we were all more or less on the same level kept things interesting. Had a good number of games ended in absolute, inevitable annihilation when facing a level 6 in random games, which kind of leads me to believe giving speed boosts to higher levels was a bad call.

I enjoy the unlocking of new raptors as you rise in level, but for some reason people lower level than me have different raptor types than I do.  Anyone know if you have to unlock certain tihngs, like helmets or what not in the actual game?

And what of the xenomorph?  I want that.  Yeah.

I was also attacking you whenever given the opportunity, which seems like a very underused tactic.

to unlock all the hats and such you need to donate

Or you had to be in the beta like me. I like the pilot hat.

Really kind of wishing there was a way to make it so level 6's can't join your level 3 game. Whenever I've run into some dude rocking an alien it is already game over before the dinorun even starts.

the multiplayer game inexplicably slows down at random intervals and then you get fucked over.

Officially converting this into the Games About Dinosaurs thread.

Jetpack Brontosaurus (http://jetpackbrontosaurus.com/alpha/) now comes in Alpha flavoring.  Delicious!  And in case you're wondering, it's apparently about an Apatosaurus who just happens to be named Brontosaurus.

I can't wait until Flashbang discovers the Video Game Name Generator.
