Title: Terraria: Now With Content
Post by: Doom on December 23, 2011, 07:54:21 PM
Yeah I am kind of a fan. (http://doom.pyoko.org/TerrariaDoomWorks.jpg)

A shame it's so hard to showcase works of art on stable servers. Maybe I'll get into Minecraft next year.

But for now 1.1 just hit and added a boat-load of post-Hell content to the game and more new goodies and a fucking gorgeous lighting system, so it's pretty hard to be down on a $10 or less game that delivers this much content.

And now there are actual traps I can set-up? Christ I might just reproduce the Doomworks and continue adding new Trappature Science Trap Testing Chambers. Then maybe share the map, which'd make people experiencing my particular brand of autism a lot easier than assuming I can host a stable server for any length of time(or that I'd want to.)

Not to be a downer or anything, but to sum up the review I have for it on Steam; why would ANYONE spend time in this instead of Minecraft? Only game I bought off of Steam that I wish I could return.

Why does anybody play Sonic games when Mario games are available?

Sometimes depth isn't necessary for a mindless, fun experience?

Why does anybody play Sonic games when Mario games are available?
Oh wait, I know the real answer to this one. Furries and will-be furries.

Also the character of Sonic and his peripheral media really captured something quintessentially juvenile and early 90's. Or at least, the archie comic and cartoon did.

This would be a valid argument if Sonic games had the equivalent of an interface that makes building and mining a chore because the blocks are in 4 pixel chunks and it's hard to see where to place things and takes far too much time to mine out a straight tunnel because you have to make sure you have to hit the individual clumps of dirt. And god help you if you're trying to figure out how to tile the background with a certain pattern.

I mean, it makes some good ideas compared to Minecraft like just flat out telling you what the recipes are and some interesting takes on the core gameplay like going out and killing monsters making the primary method of advancement. But then there's things like needing a specific tool to interact with the background and ONLY the background, having some background walls able to be knocked out but not others, not being able to place a new background tile on top of one of the ones that you can't remove.

If I'm going to play a game where the focus is building things and killing monsters, I'd much rather that building things be fun than killing monsters be slightly more robust.

tl;dr There was obviously a lot of content, work, and a slight amount of love invested in making this game, but it doesn't change the fact that it is a poorly thought out Minecraft clone created to cash in on the craze going on now.

If you can't tell the difference between types of blocks then maybe you need some glasses.  As for mining, you just click on a block and hold the left mouse button until that block disappears. Voila. I'll give you that sometimes tiling the background with a pattern is sometimes hit-and-miss, but it's far more hit than miss once you spend a few minutes doing it the first time.

Okay, maybe this is a little confusing to someone who doesn't get what's going on. The hammer tool (later the hamaxe and then the hamdrax) is used to remove walls and furniture items. All walls can be removed, and initially there is dirt walls everywhere. At a certain depth the dirt wall stops and is replaced by a dirt-and-rock background that is not actually a wall but looks like one. You can't remove it for the same reason you can't remove the sky. You can't place walls in open space, they have to be touching a block or other wall to get placed. This is why you are having problems placing walls.

Building things is secondary to exploring. You build for the purpose of holding your shit and letting NPCs live wherever. You can also decorate stuff because nobody wants a game where you can't. You are getting the wrong impression about what kind of game this is.

Anyway this game is hella fun and I'm up for playing whenever. I actually host the server that all my friends from school play on and we have basically everything except some of us don't have hallowed armor yet. If anyone is interested in building some big vanity structures ring me up because my friends don't seem to be into that and I don't want to spend 40 hours building a dwarven city by myself.

I never said I had trouble discerning the type of blocks. I simply said it takes far too long to mine each individual chunk, making tunneling any length of distance unnecessarily tedious compared to Minecraft.

And while I tried it only when it first came out for 30 minutes, uninstalled and never looked back so I could be misremembering, but I'm pretty damn sure I was only like 10 units underground when I tried to punch out a dirt wall background to put in a stone background and it didn't fly.

You know, I've heard the "Terraria is just 2d Minecraft LOL" argument before, and having bought and played both I can't really agree with it. I do get where people are coming from with it; both games have building and crafting and apparently that's enough to call one a clone of the other, but the two games have very different feels to them. Minecraft is mostly about the building and exploration, you mostly just kill monsters to survive (and to stock up on arrows and bonemeal in the case of skeletons), and the only boss-type monster is a generic dragon flying around in a seperate pocket dimension.

Terraria, in contrast plays more like a Castlevania game where you can drill through the walls (which is a pretty sweet concept if you think about it). There's a variety of monsters everywhere, and while there is exploration you're mostly just looking for ores to move through the progression of equipment tiers so you can kill the bosses. You can still build stuff, and it's fun (though I usually just make gray brick box apartment castles - I am not super creative).

Oh, and about background walls; you can only knock out pre-existing dirt wall if there's at least one tile of empty background next to it. So you'd either have to start at the top and work your way down (I've done it a couple times to carve out a hobbit dwelling, which is honestly a pain in the ass) or start from below where the background is just rocks in dirt (which doesn't actually count as background tile at all - you can place your own walls right over it, in case you want a house deep underground for some reason).

I know not everyone is going to enjoy the things I do, but you really should give Terraria another try. Give it an hour or two and see if it doesn't turn into 10 hours.

They also quadrupled the background-wall breaking + background-wall setting speeds.

I enjoyed Terraria greatly, though I haven't played Minecraft. Take that as you will.

I didn't build a Doom fortress, but I played enough to get my Hallowed, Hamdrax, and Megashark, so it's pretty much beaten at that point.

Terraria's on sale for $2.50 again today. It's well worth the price.

This (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/12/29/the-complete-a-smurf-in-terraria/) goes over a man's second attempt at understanding Terraria, after his first consisted of saying, "I could be playing Minecraft" and quitting.

Another good game to compare it to is Spelunky, since I keep on falling off of things and dying.

That said, I like the visual aesthetics.

Anyone who is interested in multiplayering it up should add me on steam. My current name is [GHS]NexAdruin and my profile picture is Gargantuan Blarg, a sentient lava bubble from Tetris Attack and whatever game Tetris Attack's story is modeled after (yoshi's island?). I've been playing almost constantly and right now I'm building a massive vanity project and I need volunteers.

Version 1.2 is out. Highlights are extra biomes, worlds generated with alt ores/hardmodes, and a minimap.

My favorite part of the new Terraria patch is that the game is now so system-intensive that I can't play it.

We started a new game last evening, and decided we were bored with super optimal apartment blocks.

What started as a emergency shelter to protect Norondor from the terrors of the first night became the start of our subterranean settlement. You can clearly see most of our NPC apartments, with my personal (work in progress) crystal grotto under the lake in the bottom left (currently inhabited by the Dryad), and the very bottom of Sei's floating doom fortress, which seems to be taking the shape of a giant skull made of hell rock and lava, in the upper right (http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/612779176765604911/E11139F94A928C0D03934C210987FE3E6A751202/)

Going down a bit further to the entrance of our main shaft, we can see Ziiro's dwarf fortress on the right, and Frozyn's (WoW friend from ages past) ice cave on the left. You can also see the captive jungle. Somewhat below that, but not in frame, is a captive blue fungus environment. (http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/612779176765607154/10826501E77BCBD3DECC9BEDB16E945D686B19C4/)

Much, much further down, and completely pointless to take a screenshot of, is what we've dubbed the "Dark Iron Highway" which is a horizontal excavation and platform project leading in either direction from the main shaft in a straight, flat line east to a spider cave, west as far as we could take it tonight. Both sides are likely to be expanded until they reach the edges of the map.

Zara added some honey springs on the right there, while I expanded my grotto to include a lovely fungus lit set of NPC apartments (http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/612779176786683608/BF38B8BDE91137C910A78CFE5D8199B5C6C0D044/)

Meanwhile Sei has expanded the captive fungus farm significantly. Captive jungle subject to future expansion. (http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/612779176786685995/DB2F167BA8F9D7EB15A9CC5A12EFBFC13FB3AF15/)

In my experience the combat and exploration parts of the game are pretty dull, and adding in a bunch of new random drops didn't help.

I do, however, rather enjoy many of the new items and materials for building things. To this end I have heavily modified an item world I downloaded so that it includes the new furniture and building materials from 1.2, and now share it with you: download here (http://www.intentionallyblank.net/gameguides/VirtualLegos.wld).

Copy into your Terraria/Worlds directory and keep a backup elsewhere. Once you loot it of everything you need, copy the backup back into /Worlds to refresh everything inside.

I'm pretty sure I have things pretty comprehensive and pretty well organized, but I finished this project ill and on medication so I may well have overlooked or screwed up something. Let me know if it needs revisions.

Oh, except I already know it doesn't include the Halloween-event stuff. 2spooky if you ask me.

Well, R^2, there's also TEdit (http://www.terrariaonline.com/threads/tedit-terraria-map-editor.35394/). Not sure whether it'll be as fun to edit from outside the game client, though.
