Two very well known tracks. Lets get this tournament started!

FF7 can go pound salt. Magus theme goes with everything.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: François on March 27, 2012, 08:50:57 PM
Both strong contenders, but despite my unusual opinion on CT, I have to admit its soundtrack is cakes and pies all the way through, while my favorite bits of FF7's are the moodier moments.

Also, Still More Fighting is hard to sing along to.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Defenestration on March 27, 2012, 09:31:12 PM
Yes, because if something is too technically complex it is automatically an inferior product, right? Singability is not a factor of quality.

This is a hard, hard pick. But Still More Fighting has a sort of tension about it that the other lacks while still conveying a similar sense of desperation.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Bongo Bill on March 27, 2012, 09:37:39 PM
Are we supposed to be judging these songs in a vacuum, or is the intent to consider them in their native context? Not that it changes my answer in this round. Still More Fighting is pretty rockin', but Magus' Theme is more dramatic and it also carries a strong sense of the character it belongs to.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Friday on March 27, 2012, 09:47:31 PM
I'd say the fairest way to judge these is in a vacuum, since nobody (probably) has played all of the games these songs came from.

And even if they did, it still makes more sense to me to vote for the best song based on the song itself, not the trappings that went with it.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Kayma on March 27, 2012, 09:49:02 PM
I love the VII boss theme quite a bit, but Magus steals this one. EMOTIONSSSSSSSS
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Romosome on March 27, 2012, 09:54:44 PM
FF7's theme is a nice example of solid Uematsu rock, with an energetic beat and that organ going off all over the place.

But Magus's theme has so much more going for it. The slow build at the beginning into the sudden burst of trumpets, the technically impressive use of the SNES's capabilities, mixing in those weird wailing/vocal bits. I think overall it's both a more emotional song and a more interesting one.

Magus for this round.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Friday on March 27, 2012, 11:27:04 PM
Magus leads 14-4. I'll update the poll before I go to bed.

Our second match:

Lufia 2: Sinistral battle theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBnYGYa6l3M#)

vs

Chrono Cross OST - Prisoners of Fate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd7ggm04GFo#ws)

Prisoners of Fate is more of a sad theme, really, but CC makes it work as a tragic boss theme. Sinistral is, of course, my own personal favorite that started this whole thing. Both are excellent tracks.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Defenestration on March 27, 2012, 11:42:41 PM
Absolutely no contest. Sinstral.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Beat Bandit on March 28, 2012, 03:27:33 AM
Sinistral is nice, but it's no "killing your father's best friend / best friend's father who is only fighting you because everything he had was lost after saving your life as a child" theme.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Defenestration on March 28, 2012, 03:29:32 AM
Friday just said to judge them in a vacuum, and we're judging them as individual pieces of music anyway! The context of the fight itself is what makes the theme fit. Without it, it's just another slow piece of orchestral music. As a piece of boss music, it is incredibly inferior. To be honest, I'm confused how Prisoners of Fate got this far.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Beat Bandit on March 28, 2012, 03:37:17 AM
Because you have bad taste?
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: François on March 28, 2012, 07:03:26 AM
Singability is not a factor of quality.

That's true. Not in an objective, absolute sense, anyway. However, from where I'm sitting, if it's not there it's not a con, but if it's there it's certainly a pro. Among many potential others. The "automatically an inferior product" verbiage is uncalled for. Heck, I nominated the Kirby's Adventure final battle, and I've been failing to sing that for almost 20 years, so it's not like it's a deal breaker.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Brentai on March 28, 2012, 07:27:29 AM
If we're judging pieces by their emotional connection to the source material, then Prisoners of Fate brings up memories of permanent confusion and apathy.

:nyoro~n: Come to think of it, if we're judging in a vaccuum (which is fine by me), I'd like to request Betrayal be taken out instead of Ushiwaka's Dance if it ain't too presumptuous of me to ask such a thing, because it's got like zero chance. It's pretty much all emotional context.

Whoa whoa whoa NO. There's more than enough emotional weight in that track to carry it outside of the scene that it's in.

Hmm, I remain unconvinced at this time, but I suppose it's worth seeing what democracy makes of your point then. As skeptical as I am, I certainly would like you to be correct!
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Beat Bandit on March 28, 2012, 01:14:23 PM
The only thing trying this competition "in a vaccuum" will do is suck worse than this pun.

Yeah, there's always subjectiveness to stuff like this, but no one can really name a boss song that sticks out from a completely boring or average fight. We all heard these songs in the same situations and so have the same emotional call backs when we hear them(of course with shades of perspective) Also, as shown already they don't all work in every situation.

Odds are super low that anyone here will hear a song and think "wow, if that was playing (this fight) would have been way better!" And I would be amazed if anyone votes for a song they don't recognize over one they do.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Kayma on March 28, 2012, 02:39:38 PM
Prisoners of Fate is a way better song. The Mystic Quest song in this bracket is better than that Lufia song. (That is not a dig. Ok, it is)

Actually...

Izuna Legend of the Unemployed Ninja - Battle A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOz1ciorpqU#)

Not a 10/10 by far but it's one of my most recent faves as far as boss music goes. The game's a basic roguelike and the bosses are more annoying than anything else.

I'm not trying to disprove your point, I just took your sentence as a challenge.  :whoops:
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME

I think that sentence applies to my entire top 5.  Or do you think I have especially fond memories of battling the Mighty Flying Popecunt?
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Friday on March 28, 2012, 11:14:59 PM
Annnnnnd Sinistral barely edges out Prisoners, 10-9. A very close fight befitting two great themes.

Our next match:

Dark Souls OST - Ornstein & Smough (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgpYfCnLhAo#ws)

vs

Shadow of the Colossus OST, T16: In Awe of the Power ~Battle with the Colossus~ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F-vB9RudQs#)

These glowing weak points? I'm telling you, brother, they're a liability.

Preeeety much this.  SotC's soundtrack is pretty amazing overall, but this piece, will good, isn't one of my favorites.  So I give the nod to the SUPER SMASH A BROS.

Gamelan is probably my absolute favorite kind of music, but Secret of Mana doesn't exactly do the best rendition of it. And that God Hand track is pretty great.

The dissonance in Oracle really makes it stand out in this list. It's got my vote this round, but when faced with the other Mana track... well.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME

I'd never heard this God Hand track until now, but it's fantastic.

Oracle wins it for me, though.

I gotta vote for Devil May Sly. God Hand's tracks just go so well with the actual fight, they have this energy and rhythm that enhances the experience.

Oracle is brutal and dark for an otherwise pretty cheery game and it sort of hits you out of nowhere, so this is a hard decision.

I have to actually admit that Oracle does dissonance astoundingly well.  As a piece of art form it is a supreme example.

As something to listen to for pleasure, though?  No way.  Devil May Sly it is.

(Sacrifice Part 3 is sitting at #6 on my personal list.  Now I really feel like I ought to have bumped it up.)
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME

Welp, we have our first tie, and thus I'll weigh in.

Oracle is one of my all time favorite tracks (if it comes down to a tie vote between Sinistral and Oracle, I may kill myself) so I've gotta give it the pass.

Next up we have:

Mario RPG: Smithy 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ3tshJyI4A)

vs

Shadow of the Colossus - The Opened Way (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrFL2zPc2uk)

Now I'm a huge fan of Smithy1, (though I wasn't the one to include it on the stronglist) but I think this is the first time my personal vote would go to the write ins. The Opened Way is top-fucking-notch.

If I was gonna nominate two from SotC, The Opened Way would have been my other pick.

Smithy is pretty rad, but, uh. For long stretches it just sounds like fat people farting at each other. It's definitely worthy of being in this contest, for sure, even despite that, but against TOW? Yeah.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME

Smithy is a competent boss theme with some pretty sick bass, but there is absolutely no reason it should have got this far. There is no comparison, this vote here.

Opened Way takes an early lead. Moving on.

Persona 3 - The Battle for Everyone's Souls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdMhTL5bZrs)

The Persona entry is actually very good. I like the layered setup and it is evocative of finality and a delicious mixture of dread and determination. I never played a Persona anything before this, but I am now interested in the soundtrack.

vs

Super Meat Boy - The Battle of Lil' Slugger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL-8rU8ltA4#ws)

Welp, I think I actually meant to put up the MQ theme that ended up getting written in. (Boss2) But both are good themes. Anyway, Lil' Slugger is an excellent track. This is a hard choice for me.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Defenestration on March 31, 2012, 08:59:25 PM
Lil' Slugger is raw and basically comes out and screams "This shit be climactic, yo" in a volume of strength that can't be ignored.

Mystic Quest opens in the most boring, typical possible way and then becomes almost every RPG boss theme ever. It is a only couple steps away from being completely by the numbers. The synth keys over the synth horns is *okay,* but it's so goddamn bland it slides backwards into mediocrity. Another track that I can't help but wonder how it got this far.

Ah, but it's not shitty!  All I'm saying is that Battle 2 is a better example of why this track is good.  Not *amazing*, but still damn good.  And that slow, pipe-organ start leading into the speed metal is always a great thing in music.

Using Final Boss instead of Battle 2 made me sit down and listen. I'd be too biased towards the latter, since I used it as a ringtone so long hearing it still makes me sit up and look for my phone.

The Mystic Quest track is a skillfull use of the SNES's sound capabilities. It's nicely rhythmic, and it doesn't lean too hard towards either "rock guitar shredding" or "triumphant fantasy orchestral", finding a middle ground inbetween.

The Super Meat Boy track is generic electronica that you could probably find in any given flash game.

Point: Mystic Quest.

I'd take that if you weren't comparing it to fucking Jenova.  The entire piece is overlaid with something that sounds like an alarm clock and underlaid with a snare drum on a 180 tempo that never shuts up.  It couldn't be more urgent if the whole thing was just R Lee Ermey screaming in your ear to fight this fucking weird looking piece of shit alien thing.

Well, it's tied 9-9. I asked around in #ff, and most people there who haven't already voted (not all) seemed to prefer Jenova, but really I'm not going to set a precedent and reopen a poll after it closed.

So, I'm gonna close my eyes and listen to both and then go with what I liked better.

...

Yep. Jenova.

Pokey wins, 10-9. Lol, the MQ track everyone thought was better lost. So now, if the OTHER MQ track matches up against Pokey and wins, it'll come full circle.

Next up we have THE BATTLE OF THE SNES SQUARESOFT JRPG FINAL BOSSES WITH "DANCE" IN THE TITLE

Final Fantasy Final Boss Music - Final Fantasy VI Kefka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jVcn6I452I#)

vs

Secret of Mana OST - Meridian Dance ~ Mana Beast Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Vo6hTc5on0#)

Since the full version of Dancing Mad includes the long trek up the three mutated Statues (or at least, that's what I always thought they were) and is like 18 minutes long, and the person who elected it probably just meant the part with Kefka anyway, yeah, that's what we'll be judging.

Personally, I don't really consider either of these tracks 10/10. Both are solid 8s imo. Oracle is my prefered SoM boss track, and Zeromus wasn't even fucking nominated in the write ins.

However, a lot of people seem to really love Meridian Dance and think Oracle is garbage or ho-hum. I guess it's like the Elvis/Beatles thing, you know, you can like both, but ultimately you're either a Meridian Dance man or an Oracle man.

Er. Sort of got sidetracked there.

what is this thread about again
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME

Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: on April 05, 2012, 12:41:36 AM
Mana all the way, hoss. Even Dancing Mad's sinister overtones for one of the most twisted villians in FF history can't top the adrenaline rush and feeling of urgency that comes with Meridian Dance.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Romosome on April 05, 2012, 01:03:02 AM
Really really hard.

It's actually hard for me to listen to FF6 music nowadays. I listened to it almost religiously when I was a kid, to the point where it now occupies a totally different part of my mind. It's actually hard to sit down and appreciate it beyond some kind of abstract, like I've just put it on this higher mental tier.

So Dancing Mad doesn't excite me as much as Meridian Dance, like Lyrai said. But it has Kefka's lietmotif in it and I fucking love lietmotifs.

At the same time though, I've always loved just how well Meridian Dance itself matches the rhythm of the fight, how the little pause segment before it goes into the second half of the melody matches up with the casting of Mana Sword if you time it just right....

Fuck it, I'm voting for Meridian Dance
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Defenestration on April 05, 2012, 01:08:53 AM
It seems wrong to vote for eliminating Dancing Mad in the first round. Very, very wrong. It's dark, ominous, and brooding in all of the best ways. But man, it just cannot compete with the sheer kinetic force and variety of Meridian Dance. The trill at the opening quickly building up to crash cymbals and a full stop, indicating respect, apprehension, and awe, into a completely boss bass line under long brass notes that implies grim determination, to the bridge beginning at :55 that evokes hope and conviction. And to top it all off, you wouldn't think it would loop well in full with that opening but it pulls off even *that.*

I really regret voting against Dancing Mad in round 1, but I'll be damned if this isn't an easy pick.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Bongo Bill on April 05, 2012, 02:56:36 AM
I'd have voted for the full 18-minute Dancing Mad suite, but the final movement is my least favorite part of it. It'd be a different matter if the toccata had been the nomination.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Niku on April 05, 2012, 04:12:11 AM
I'm going to say fuck it and vote for Dancing Mad in it's entirety because its entirety is what makes it so fantastic.

Also, a slightly abridged orchestral version matched up exactly to the time from start to finish that it took us to complete our first Madness of Deathwing kill.

Plus, Oracle is way, way better than Meridian Dance.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Brentai on April 05, 2012, 07:27:35 AM
Ah, now here's something I was worried about: mixing up boss themes with final boss themes.  Final boss themes by nature are kind of a different beast because they're meant to represent the game's climax - its highest point of tension.  The purpose and tone of the final boss theme should always be a lot different than just "a boss" or "a really big boss".

So what we have here are two tunes that could go either way in a vacuum (I'd probably still vote Dancing Mad, really), but as final boss themes Meridian Dance always kind of bothered me because it sounds more like a mid-boss theme than a final boss theme.  It lacks finality.  The Mana Beast (spoilers!) ends up seeming like a mere obstacle on the way to your final fight with -- well everyone else is dead by that point, but you get the idea.  It probably doesn't help that the final boss itself is mostly a Space Flea.  I think Square even noticed it too, which is why they used a similar-sounding theme for Seiken Densetsu 3's first boss.

Sufficed to say, Dancing Mad does not have this problem.

The Black Mages version is rather improved in that regard!  Trims it to 12 minutes, retains all of the potency.

Also come on it's Dancing Fucking Mad.  If this gets eliminated, it should be in the final round.

Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Friday on April 13, 2012, 03:35:04 PM
Wow, The Chase really came from behind and tied it up.

The joke is, of course, I don't really like either of these tracks.

Don't get me wrong, they're OK, I'm not saying they're terrible. Both have a good energy to them. I just can't see them making the finals if this poll was entirely controlled by me.

Of course, if I was to vote on the trappings of these tracks, Luca Blight would win instantly, he's one of the best villains of all time. But that's not how I vote. And I hope that's not how you guys are voting.

Anyway, I'm going to give these tracks a once more listen to with my eyes closed and give the vote to the one who makes my nipples the hardest.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Friday on April 13, 2012, 03:49:08 PM
OK so they both made my nipples equally hard, but The Chase is a bit more complex, so I'll vote it.

Our final match of ro1 is:

Bayonetta OST - You May Call Me Father (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmQm_PySHCk#ws)

vs

Silent Hill 2 OST - Betrayal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WShknpNpHbY#)

Now, this is an interesting match up. I haven't actually played Bayonetta, but I can say without a doubt that in context, Betrayal beats the holy living fuck out of, well, basically any fucking track. If this was a poll about context and how music can be used to effectively convey emotion, I'd say Betrayal would be my number 1 pick.

However, since this isn't that poll and we're (supposed to be) judging music in a vacuum, I'd say the opposite: pretty much every single other track in this poll is better than Betrayal, including You May Call me Father. I was asked to cut Betrayal because of this reason, but some others seem to think it can stand on it's own despite that.

I know you're gonna be tempted to vote on this match up, if you vote on any match up, based on your experience in the game. Don't. If Betrayal wins here, it needs to be because you honestly think it is a better piece of music than YMCMF.
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: François on April 13, 2012, 04:35:47 PM
I've never played either game. I've watched maybe 6 LPs of SH2* and Betrayal gives me chills every time. I know basically nothing about Bayonetta. That said, in the context of this particular poll, I knew I was voting for Call me daddy after the first ten seconds.

*: I know this is crazy but I can never pass up a blind one. And it's not like I stare at them for the whole length; I'm familiar enough with it by now that I'm fine with just listening while I do something else (thank the Lord).

EDIT: oh wow, i was the first vote for bayonetta, I guess the urge to prove me wrong combined with the universal boner for Akira Yamaoka turns out to be an unusually potent force  :whoops:
Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME

... man.

Seriously, you had like a million rounds there where I didn't give a flying fuck who won and couldn't in all honesty tell the difference between most tracks, and then you throw two of my favorite tracks right at me. That's mean. Beyond mean.

Okay, I said there were reasons I thought Betrayal could stand on its own without context back when Friday was asked to cut it, so I suppose I should explain my point: Betrayal, I feel, creates its own context. It sort of tells its own little story. First you have those clanking, disharmonious piledriver-like sounds that create a sense of oppressive dread. But then that lofty, somber, chantlike part joins in, which at first seems to contribute to Betrayal's sense of oppression.

But then that chant grows on you, and even grows stronger in the music. It's not working with the piledriver, it's working in contrast against the piledriver. It almost begins to sound... hopeful. Despite its name, Betrayal becomes a sort of theme for Redemption.

On the other hand, oh god is You May Call Me Father so fucking sweet.

Okay Friday, clarify the rules for me.

Clearly voting for Dancing Mad because omfg kefka is dumb.

But not being able to vote for it based off the emotion, and effectiveness with which it conveys the emotion it's trying too can't possibly be what you're saying because that would be super dumb. It's what I'm hearing though.

I didn't vote for Prisoners of fate because I loved the boss of Miguel, Dragon God because of... whatever fight that was, or Chase because of Luca because I started with Suikoden III (I know, right?). I voted for all of them because I am more heavily effected by the emotion of a terrible, epic, brutal fight for your life, all of which are emotions those songs convey, with varying success, independent of their specific fight.

Final Fantasy 4 "Fight 2"
***Secret of Mana "Oracle"
Earthbound: Heavily Armed Pokey
***Final Fantasy 6: Dancing Mad

Bayonetta - You May Call me Father
***Gitaroo Man - Born to be Bone
Final Fantasy 7 Jenova Theme
Chrono Cross: Dragon God
***Shadow of the Colossus - The Opened Way
Shadow of the Colossus: In Awe of the Power

Is our ro2 list. Some quick facts:

4 FF tracks remain (5 if you count MQ)
Oracle is the only Mana track to make it to ro2
Both SotC tracks made it
Stronglist won 11 out of 16 match ups
Write ins won 5 out of 16

Anyway, a couple of people have asked me to do the next round with "Final Fantasy against Final Fantasy, Mana against Mana" and though there's only one Mana track left, I will be doing the following match ups first to narrow down the tracks from the same game/series. (MQ gets a pass and will be randomly matched up)

So!

Since Dancing Mad and Big Bridge seem to be everyone's favorites, lets go ahead and match them both against the "lesser" tracks!

Best VGM 127 - Final Fantasy V - Battle with Gilgamesh (Clash on the Big Bridge) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CMTXyExkeI#)

Don't worry, I think it'll slow down from here on. In any case, I'm just gonna let next ro3 and on go 24 hours each match, unless we get some weird upset like 10-0.

In other news, both SotC have remained consistently tied each time I check the thread, so I'm sure this match will go the full 24 hours.

The Opened Way says "BOOYAH!". In Awe of the Power says "holy SHIT holy FUCK". Depends on what you're looking for in your boss battles, basically.

Sinistral Theme
Luca Blight
***Battle with Gilgamesh
final fantasy mystic quest final boss
Final Fantasy 4 "Fight 2"
Secret of Mana "Oracle"
Earthbound: Heavily Armed Pokey
***Final Fantasy 6: Dancing Mad
***CT: Magus' Theme
***Persona 3 - The Battle for Everyone's Souls
Bayonetta - You May Call me Father
Gitaroo Man - Born to be Bone
Final Fantasy 7 Jenova Theme
Chrono Cross: Dragon God
***Shadow of the Colossus - The Opened Way
Shadow of the Colossus: In Awe of the Power

Opened Way 8-5 over In Awe. Now we get back to the random match ups, the first of which is:

Awesome Video Game Music 41: Porky Means Business (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4z82byt5mA#)

vs

After trolling #ff for some more votes (it was tied 5/5, then ended up 7/8) Persona barely wins by 1.

Our next match up is:

Lufia 2: Sinistral battle theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBnYGYa6l3M#)

vs

Bayonetta OST - You May Call Me Father (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmQm_PySHCk#ws)

Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME

I've devised a new system to settle this predicament: Watch each theme's associated boss fight (or most-associated boss fight) with the other music.

In this case Sinistral Battle wins, but just barely.  It basically comes down to YMCaMF being a little too bombastic for something as deliberate as a 16-bit JRPG, whereas the Sinistral Theme translates pretty much perfectly to an action game and even syncs up a little bit.

Shame, too.  Hearing Young Men's Christian Mother Fuckers is pretty much what prompted me to buy Bayonetta, the only DMC clone besides DMC1 that I can say I legitimately like.

With less than an hour to go, Sinistral leads 9-3.

Next match:

Suikoden II OST - The Chase ~ Battle against Luca (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX8fKtjpr_E#)

vs

Gitaroo Man OST - Born to be Bone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsA3DxeqtZ4#noexternalembed)

Title: Re: HOTTEST BOSS THEME
Post by: Friday on April 19, 2012, 05:17:49 PM
Born to be Bone slaughters The Chase, 8-1.

Our final match of ro2 is:

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Final Boss / Top 10 SNES Music - 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8AFiu_SBN4#)

vs

#9 - The Oracle (Dark Lich) - Secret of Mana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJX-s41D3Dc#)

So, the weaker of the MQ tracks (the stronger having already lost to Pokey, which itself lost to Persona) should now win this match up and then go on to beat Persona, so the cycle can be complete.

Alternatively, Lyrai will post MANA in such huge letters that it sends everyone into a coma.

Oracle 8-4 over MQ. Moving on to ro3:

Sinistral Theme
***Battle with Gilgamesh
Secret of Mana "Oracle"
Final Fantasy 6: Dancing Mad
***CT: Magus' Theme
Persona 3 - The Battle for Everyone's Souls
***Gitaroo Man - Born to be Bone
Shadow of the Colossus - The Opened Way

Our first match (by random determination) is:

Magus' Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfCV1bVOiGc#)

vs

Shadow of the Colossus OST, T08: The Opened Way ~Battle with the Colossus~ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrFL2zPc2uk#)

Getting down to the wire, now. Only 7 matches left, including this one. We've got 8 very strong contenders for the throne, but only 1 can sit down.

With Magus 10-3 over Opened Way, we move on to our next match.

Some quick facts (since I forgot them when ro3 started)

6 stronglist left, 2 write ins (1 now with Opened Way eliminated)
4 songs are tracks from titles by Square
all tracks left as of now are RPGs except BtbB

Our next match is:

#9 - The Oracle (Dark Lich) - Secret of Mana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJX-s41D3Dc#)

vs

Gitaroo Man OST - Born to be Bone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsA3DxeqtZ4#noexternalembed)

The game is basically a string of guitar duels, where U-1 battles with a guitar of some type, and the opponent fights with some other instrument.  Each stage has a very different style generally based on the enemy boss's weapon.

and the music is totally 5 stars would buy again a++ seller

Some of the orchestral takes on Dancing Mad are really, really amazing. The kind of music that might be legitimately interesting to someone outside the hobby of videogaming.

However, if I take it on the face of the original composition of both songs, and in the context of being a videogame boss theme, Clash on the Big Bridge is way better. Sorry Kefka.

BfES consistently makes top 5 boss/final boss themes in youtube polls. I've personally never really thought it was that great of a theme, but I'm not surprised it's going to the final four by any means. I included it on the Stronglist because I knew how much other people liked it.

I'll wait the 21 more hours for this poll to close, but unless a miracle occurs, our final four is going to be Magus, Big Bridge, BtbB, and BfES. In fact, I'm going to run a poll about DEMOCRACY (http://brontoforum.us/index.php?topic=6378.msg228564#msg228564)

I would vote for P3 theme but as Romo pointed out I haven't play Lufia 2 so I cannot be impartial on this. Lufia theme is pretty all right though. Besides being pretty good, the strength of the P3 theme also lies in the battle that goes with it and I suspect the same is true for the lufia theme.
