Thaddeus Boyd's Panel of Death / Re: Literally bullshit
« on: September 26, 2013, 03:07:54 PM »
Guess what: "literally" has been used as an intensifier, literally, since the 1700s.

And even if it hadn't, no language is static, unless it's dead. Words change their meaning all the time, but I guess pedantic jerks have to find something to snark about or they will literally explode.

The problem I have with this is that using "literally" in this way, is meant as hyperbole, an exaggeration. The whole reason it WORKS is because it means what it meant before this change. A person saying a guy is "literally a greyhound" or that a heavy object weighs "literally a ton" do not mean "metaphorically", they mean "literally" and are simply exaggerating to stress a point.

Changing to this new meaning makes the the word "literally" more confusing than it needs to be for no reason and also changes the meaning of what everyone who uses the word incorrectly is saying. This is a foolish change and makes me think even less of the oxford dictionary than I already did as its editors apparently haven't ever heard of exaggeration or know what it means.

Hahaha, but there's so many other cool guns. What about a Nambu type 14 or something? I've always had a fondness for little snub nose 38 revolvers or a 357 magnum one. The newer ones with internal strikers are cool, but I think it'd be more gritty to have an old S&W one with the hammer self bobbed so that you could pull it out of a pocket or something without it snagging but only fire it in double action. Some of the really small semi autos they have now are cool too though.

It'd be cool to have an old single action S&W Model 3, especially the old russian contract ones with the weird trigger guard spur. The coolest example of which that I have ever seen is this ornamented one.

The intro video to the Moss Pawn & Gun channel is one of my favourites they've ever done. It starts off slow, but has some pretty intentionally and unintentionally funny parts. Mostly the latter which is why I'm a subscriber.

Gaming Discussion / Card Hunteria

The development team is just under 10 or so people and it includes mysterious and productive Australian indie developer, Farbs. I really like the presentation of his Captain Jameson game. The BBS style menus for interacting with space stations really strokes my 80s computing boner.

But yeah, Card Hunter, It's cool. It's a little bit grindy, but not enough to put me off and the whole cards in hand equals what you can do or be protected from that turn system it has going is cool. Is a guy's crazy armour fucking you over? Well you could hit him with a armour disolve or armour boil spell OR if you're clever, maybe you'll just hit him with a memory loss spell since it's been a few turns and you figure his armour is the oldest card in his hand.

Anyway, I really just wanted to show off my priest. He's a skeleton with a giant skeletal arm as one of his maces and the severed hand of a GM's Mary Sue character as one of his unholy trinkets.

None of this is my fault.

Untagged NSFW picture after being warned for untagged NSFW content.  I hope Geo wasn't a player in this game.

I honestly feel like Zara and now Ocksi are more suspicious. I maintain my Zara vote.

I vote to test Zara for standard "being too quiet" reasons.

and I vote to tell Sharkey to BOLD his votes again so that he'll actually do it and we don't have to guess.

What's that? I should throw my dynamite at Beat Bandit?

*sparks a flare and holds it menacingly up to the fuse while looking crazy and snow caked*

...

Wait a minute, this isn't a dynamite stick, this is my own severed and then frozen penis with a tampon jammed into it!

FRI DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

We're talking the test with the wire for this game and not something else, right?

Beau's All Natural makes some pretty solid beers, but what I love most about them has always been their graphic design.

Sorry Shinra, money runs your system. The Tea Party, despite having so many successful albums, doesn't have much, but their fairy-tale, rugged individualist ideals can be used to inadvertently support big business and banks (can we call that "big money" or does it have to be "big finance"?). OWS didn't get enough rich people interested, probably because their message was "fuck you, rich 1% who run the country" and that's a hard sell.

People criticize OWS for not having a clear message or clear direction, but I think that's unfair. The message was "I'm an American and I have no power in my country because I'm not rich."

Once you get down into the "issues" an OWS protest starts to seem less like a unified mob and more like a collage of different people with different ideas who all come from different walks of life other than the fact that none of them are billionaires. How do you take back a democracy from a ruling class that at best is in power due to oversights in the system that never got fixed because the system just happened to be structured in such a way that it perpetuates itself or at worst, they intentionally are keeping the rules the way they are to fuck the rest of you because Jesse Ventura is right and they are really reptiles.

There's not an easy, civil way to fix this and well, most poor american's are still fat. You are all still fed, mostly employed, entertained, and relatively free so the motivation to do something drastic and/or meaningful just isn't there. Isn't the poster child of the OWS protestors an unemployed grad or some such?

The point is, people marched or squatted or whatever, they made the complaint heard, and then they got criticized because the fact that they are 99% of America means they don't all have some magical single voice. OWS isn't fighting for a leftist government, they are fighting for a government that represents them and their interests, whatever those happen to be, rather than trying to fool them into rallying around what isn't best for them with tv ads and thousand dollar dinners.

Are there any even remotely electable politicians that have recognized what OWS is talking about and made any attempt to side with them? At least here in Canada, Elizabeth May got elected.

In fairness, part of why the Tea Party was so well-organized was that it was almost immediately co-opted by the Republican Establishment.  (That it has been a less-than-reliable ally of the Republican Establishment was foreseeable to any reasonable human being, but the Republican Establishment does not really fit under that category.)

Hey maybe the Democratic party should co-opt OWS. Oh wait, they represent big business, nevermind.

The header picture of this tumblr thing is awful looking (unless you're a gay furry, then whatever) but wait for the comic to load, it's awesome.
