A patent is really expensive, and this isn't copyrightable. But worst case scenario is I'll basically get grandfathered in and still be allowed to sell them, since I have proof of when I came up with idea and I can't find anything even remotely similar to them already existing. And I'm pretty sure that even though I've "published" depictions of the item, I haven't published actual specifications, so I can still patent it in the future.

T, I noticed you don't hold one block up and see if the other will stick to it with the dovetail models. Is that because it would slide off? In that case, the tree can't be built. I'm a little leaning toward 'so fucking what if I can't build blocky trees' on that one myself, however.

Yeah, the dovetails just slide apart if you pick one up. Really, I was fine with not being able to build overhangs myself, since I mainly want them for hills and walls, but it seems like being able to build ceilings, caves, trees and so on would be a good thing.

Finally got my hands on the prototypes. I'll have some video up soon.

The friction fit seems to be totally feasible.

I reworded the IndieGoGo page a lot because I was getting so many complaints about how, "You don't get a set of blocks if donate."

The design is not finalized yet, but my prediction is it will simply be friction. The ridges are actually the same height as the studs on a LEGO, and should simply stick snugly in place.

However, I am prototyping several different methods to see which works best.

Bam!

And G is correct, the idea is to have as few molds as possible; in fact I might be limited to just one, in which case I will probably do 1/2" pieces. The treasure chest is actually going to be 3D printed rather than cast, since it's only a collectible.

This would make minis more stable but the bottom layer would float a little bit off the table. Only by a 1/16 of an inch, but still.

Yeah, actually, for now I'm just going to say if you want stairs, represent them abstractly with two 1/4" pieces stacked.

They have a couple interesting ideas here as well: http://hirstarts.yuku.com/topic/5036

EDIT: I'm pretty sure all official D&D minis have exactly 1" round bases, so that in theory you could play gridless and just see if the bases are touching.

I don't know if there's any stair design you could do that would let 1" based minis stand on it?

The short pieces are 1/4" though.

Furniture and other special things could maybe be done as 3D prints, making them like $7 for a single piece.

The pieces are big enough that even if they fit very tightly I don't think anyone over 3 years old is going to have trouble pulling them apart, BUT, that's what prototyping is for. We'll see what happens.

Does anyone happen to have some Heroscape tiles they can takes close up shots of for me? I've been curious how those snap together.

Yeah, that's an idea. Looking at some LEGO knockoffs though, it seems like a friction fit is actually pretty simple to do with ABS, so that's the first thing I'm trying.

Possibly. That's one of the designs I'm prototyping, along with a simple friction grip and an idea involving notches. Whatever I end up with, SOMEHOW they will stick together horizontally.

The real reason I don't want to make hexes is because you can already buy those; seems simple enough. I mean, if this were to become a respected brand name or something, hexes would be viable, but right now it's too close to Heroscape.

Alright, I want to make some sort of collectible, special edition block for a higher donation reward, but I can't decide on what.

My ideas so far:

An obelisk with a personalized message in relief on the sides.
A 3D campfire
An altar
A special color, such as "lava"

Any suggestions?

Kickstarter turned me down as not matching the feel of the site.

Heroscape is also pretty big though (1.5" or nearly 2" inches, I think), and it's all exterior terrain only. Squares/cubes are better for interiors, buildings, etc. and still work for exterior as well, as Minecraft shows.

I think it's different enough to be viable.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, if I had a bunch of Herosacpe I'd use it for RPGs in a heartbeat. Fighting in a canyon? BAM, height differences friggin everywhere.

Just wanted to pop in and say I have the first set of prototypes printed, so I'll be uploading video of those soon and you'll be able to see how they actually work.
