As going head to head with Makaris will certainly result in my utter annihilation, I will gracefully back out as well.

These past couple of days have been an interesting test of classic PC gameplay over the internet.  I hope that my archaic DOS sagery has provided a fun and nostalgic time for those involved.

I think that rather than trying to throw together a random game on any particular night, it might work better if I organized a weekly or bi-weekly event.

Perhaps a poll would be helpful in selecting a game, though I'm not sure how I would work that on the boards without causing a fracas.

Any ideas please let me know, and thanks for all the gibs.

Here's hoping the lag is tolerable.  If it is too bad we can always say fuck it and play TF2 or such.

After some extensive testing of several versions of Warcraft 2, it seems the DOS version is the most compatible.  The windows version does not support TCP/IP, and tunneling would require external programs.

So here you go:

http://rapidshare.com/files/394587007/WARCRFT2.zip

Load it into dosbox and it should be ready to go.

As usual, if people show interest tonight I will start the TS server around 9:30. Teamspeak server info posted earlier in this thread.

Let's get orky!

Warcraft II is probably the best candidate. Tons of fun, lots of scenarios, has 8-player capabilities, and is severely underplayed now.

I've got the brain!
Huh-uh!

Makaris and a couple others also mentioned Warcraft II.  Sounds good to me.

I'm going to try and dig up a copy of the 1999 re-release for Windows.  Stay tuned.. and... STOP POKING MEEEEEEE!!!!!

Good games all.  That was much smoother than DOOM, probably due to the network protocol.  I would consider doing that again, or even trying out Quake II in the future.

There is a calling to play an RTS next.  In the spirit of revisiting the past, it should be of the mid to late 90's era.  Any suggestions?

Also, it would be awesome if we could get a larger turnout.  If you guys know anyone else who would be interested in these games, spread the word.

I assume we enter the IP into the "remote server", all other things staying standard.

I believe you are correct sir.

I'll start up teamspeak around 9:30EST and let people trickle in.  Same IP/port/pass as posted earlier.

The game is Quake, the nails are sharp, the grenades are bouncy.  Links for downloads are above.

Hopefully a few more people will try it out tonight than last time, so spread the word!

Ok, Quake it is then.

In particular, DirectQuake; the version most compatible with modern graphics cards.  This will allow Quake to run from within windows, without the need for DOSBOX.

To install:

1. Update DirectX 9.0c (I'm running Windows 7, and had to do this to keep it from crashing)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

2. Download Quake

http://rapidshare.com/files/394169467/QUAKE.zip

3. Run DirectQ.exe right from the folder, no install needed.

4. Set up video options (can run in really high rez. I have it running in 1920x1080), user options (name and such), and controls (there is mouse support, albeit the oldschool style)

If people are around tonight I will host.  Let me know if you want to try it.

Thanks to Smiler, Envy, and Makaris for helping me test out the server.  The lag wasn't too bad, but I think I can improve latency with a few serverside hardware tweaks.

DOOM is pretty vanilla, but I had a good time. It was good for a test run in any case. I forgot how lethal that chain saw could be. RIP AND TEAR!

As for the next attempt, there are plenty of options, and I can RS any game that I have listed previously.

One possibility that was mentioned was Quake.  GLQuake is a modern port that is friendly with modern graphics cards and I'm pretty sure it supports native TCP/IP.

Ok, to connect to a server, the command is:

IPXNET CONNECT <SERVERIP> <PORT>

This will establish the tunnel.  It will not work unless you have set IPX=TRUE in the config file.

For those who haven't played multiplayer DOOM before, or for those who plum forgot, you must then SETUP.EXE and launch from there.

I will try to get a game going tonight if there are enough people interested, maybe around 11pm (gotta bbq the shit out of some hamburgers first).  Whoever wants to play, let me know and I will PM you the server info.  I will be hosting the full version of DOOM, and I have it RS'd above.  I will try to get Teamspeak up as well to assist those in need of technical support.

Come brothers, let us revel in the nostalgia together!

How about a good old fashioned DOOM deathmatch/co-op game to start with?  It will be good to stress test the DOSBOX IPX tunneling capabilities.

Download at:

http://www.squakenet.com/computer_games/246/Doom/download.html

Also, when setting up DOSBOX, make sure you set IPX=TRUE in the '.ini'.

Who wants to play?
