A long-ass time ago, back when I had something called hope, I made a shitty hand-drawn Doom WAD (WADs have level, sound and graphic data for Doom):

Final Fantasy Doom Mod

I decided to do another shitty Doom-wad hack since it's easy enough... or is it?



This here was a super-easy sprite change that I made using Sprites found in this site. It was fast and easy, and the game has characters that move in six directions (no horizontal) so I could easily import it to Doom without drawing new frames. There is one problem: She acts just like the undead human she replaced, so she shoots (invisible) bullets at me. I tried using WhackEd2 to make her melee-attack me up close (like the pink demons) and she did but then she didn't die and I tried to fix it but couldn't because editing WAD files is a fucking mess.

If I'm going to make a Doom conversion that uses fantasy and non-shooting characters I need to change stuff so there are more melee enemies and weapons. Editing graphics and maps is easy, but the way the game plays is not. :(

So I was thinking of making a WAD not about Final Fantasy but something with more shooting in it. The only games that I thought of were:

1. Megaman: Lots of shooting, but a doom WAD was already done and it was good. Not to mention I would have to edit the sprites to add directions to the enemies.

2. Cave Story: You shoot a lot of stuff but that stuff doesn't shoot back much.

3. Metroid: Again, Samus can shoot, but most enemies don't.

I don't know what else to do. Doom2 only has two melee weapons: Fist and Chainsaw. I don't know what to replace the chainsaw with, but the fist can easily be a sword. If only I could turn other weapons into more "fists" (with different graphics) then I could make a fantasy-themed WAD, but I don't know how to do that.

Anyone has any ideas?

And yeah, I was thinking of using sprite rips for the graphics, doing it by hand all over again is going to be a pain.

As for original ideas? I have no original ideas that include guns. I also don't want to make something realistic because that's boring.

Metroid Doom would be extremely awesome.

If you don't want to add enemies, make it a multiplayer game like that Megaman Doom one.

Optionally: Super Smash Bros multiplayer Doom mod.

Give Heretic and Hexen a look; they're fantasy games running on the Doom engine and might give you some ideas.

I don't know from Revenant Wings, but there are plenty of projectile-based characters in the Final Fantasy series -- spellcasters, bow users, and, yes, gunners.

But if you're married to the melee idea, well, it's definitely an interesting thought but I don't know much about hacking WADs; I used plenty of them back in the day but they were mostly just graphical replacements.  Bound to be some resources out there; Doom is the mother of all modding communities.

Looks like crap.

The colors are off (it's DOOM!) and she's too small. Also the animations look like shit, mostly because the bots are constantly shooting.
I'm thinking of downloading a 3Ds Max file of Samus and rendering the images, but that might not work and look even worse.

Anyway, I thought I could make a totally original fantasy doom wad, but the hand-drawn thing I made looks like shit too:

I liked it too. maybe Lee-Ham knows of a bigger sprite that can be used?
Or just use all sprites at 2x scale, it's not like they're -ever- at the proper resolution when seen on screen.

I suggest an engine like Doom Legacy (http://doomlegacy.sourceforge.net) or ZDoom (http://zdoom.org/)

I'm using zDoom aaaaand...

Space Pirates and Jumping Creature
At 1:00, the space pirates seem to be dancing.

Two new enemies replaced. The Imps are Space Pirates now and the Shotgun guys are some jumping alien thing from Super Metroid. I think they look pretty good. Ok, so that's two enemies done, all I have left are the former humans, chaingun guys, revenatnts, lost souls (Metroids of course), Demons, Baron of Hell, Hell Knight, Cacodemon, Cyberdemon, Pain Elemental, Archviles, the Big spider thing, the small spider things, fat monster and that other one I forgot. Only two of those monsters don't shoot projectiles and there aren't a lot of Metroid Monsters that do. I also wish I could do Kraid, but I don't think I'll be able to find the sprites.

Here's something I did recently:

Ridley and Metroid Prime WIP

Ridley replacing the Cyberdemon and a crappy Metroid Prime replacing the Spider Mastermind.

None have death animations yet.

Ridley could use different colors and it sucks that he has too shoot missiles instead of fireballs or whatever Ridley actually shoots, but I like the way the Cyberdemon's steps match the wing flaps. I could use the Baron of Hell's shooting animation so he can shoot green goo, which I can change later, EDIT: Already did.

As for the spider mastermind Metroid Prime, there's only like 4 frames of animation total... I'm so lazy. He's always looking at the player and shoots bullets. I think I could try to make the squid-like Metroid Prime appear after it dies. Maybe use the Pain Elemental for the floating squid-like MP?

Spram, I'm totally digging that Brinstar music you're using.  Is there more like it somewhere, and can I download it?

For some reason Fraps doesn't want to record the sound effects so I added my own music. The Brinstar Music is from a virt 22-minute Super Metroid arrangement you can find here: http://www.biglionmusic.com/category/music/arrangements/

He's really talented and his music is mostly fun, he used to live where I live now and he once called me an idiot on the internet.

I downloaded a wad that contained a lot of Doom weapons including a freeze ray. It seems the Freeze Ray was made by a guy called CutmanMike. This guy also made the Megaman Doom Multiplayer game. Maybe I should ask him how to do it so I can include an ice beam in this mod.

I hope he's nice.
