My old launch PS2 finally died tonight.
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:19:18 AM »

It was having trouble loading stuff in Rogue Galaxy and couldn't read CDs at all, so I opened up the case and adjusted the voltage screws (there are guides on GFAQs on how to do this, I did it last time the PS2 was having trouble and that fixed it for a good while). After that I couldn't load PS2 games anymore (it does read CDs, but that's less important), even after I put the DVD voltage screw back to where it was. I guess after a decade of heavy use it just finally couldn't take anymore.

Ugh. The electrician in me is furious at youtube for telling you to fiddle with voltage metering resistors without telling you to hook a multimeter up to it while doing so. And also it probably wouldn't have made a difference if you had, considering how dense those circuit boards typically are. And also you probably blew something. And also those circuit boards are made to be inoperable, so probably next system blower out the vents a few times a year and it will extend the life by a year or so.

Yeah, I knew I was risking damage to the console by fucking with the voltage screws. But in my defense:

1) I had done it before and it fixed the system wonderfully for like a year or so.

2) I was tired of the thing fucking up on me so bad that I had to, you know, open it up and fuck with voltage screws, so I figured "fuck it, new slim ps2s are $99, if this fries the system or just fails to fix it I'll just go buy a new one, getting it fixed by people who know what they're doing would likely have cost that much or close to it anyway".

3) Oh oh, I thought of a third point: Being a decade old, the poor thing was probably on its last legs anyway. At worst this just hastened the inevitable.

So yeah, this probably wasn't the smartest idea in the world, but it's not like I just grunted "URGH PS2 NOT WORK, ME OPEN UP AND FIX!"

It's really fortunate they still make PS2s (and even GAMES for them) after like eleven goddamn years.
I mean, you would be pretty screwed if this had happened to any other console.

The previous generation seems to represent some sort of apex of Japanese gaming technology.  Nintendo refuses to go beyond it and Sony has proven to be utterly incapable, so Microsoft and Windows PCs are left alone to affect progress.

Once again Microsoft corners a market by finding rivals that are a lower denominator than them.
